Here in the uk there used to be a big chubby cat who would spend all day hunting and sunbathing on a meadow behind our house. And there were also a gang of magpies who loved to sneak up on the cat when it was focused on hunting or sleeping in the sun and peck the poor thing’s tale. The cat would get soo startled it would often leap a meter vertically into the air. The magpies didn’t get any food or anything out of it. They were just little goblins and enjoy tormenting this cat for the fun of it
Ooh! Poor cat! My dad has a similar story: one time he was walking down the beach and saw a cat with one eye, trying to hunt pigeons. The little devils not only avoided the cat's attempts to hunt with ease, but also encouraged him to hunt them, so he would try to jump on them and they'd get away, like a prank
They were likely avenging the murders of their families and friends by cats. If you knew how cats hunt, you'd feel a lot less sympathy for this one.
I hope you understand that cat hunting doesn't just consist of the cat hugging things. Out of "being starled by a mild tail pull" and "being bitten to death by a cat", one of these things is far worse.
And fYI just because they don't get food out of it in every case doesn't mean it isn't related. This is a common behaviour that DOES allow corvids to steal food from a predator. I think the the fact that they do it when no food is involved is practice, a kind of game, so that they keep sharp.

I just watch a show on discovery plus about this sanctuary for the kangaroos and the lady that runs this place is amazing! She stayed for days with her animal's trying to help the hurt ones after the wild fire's when no one else would even enter the area. I'm so happy to see the kangaroos thriving! The lady that runs this place is a true hero!

Cockatoos are evil - they always travel in flocks (sometimes 100 of them) and like wolves, they gang up on their prey and mob attack (smaller birds, chickens, cats, dogs and even humans if in their way). They'll also gang up on hawks and other birds of prey if they sense a threat (and have the numbers to subdue them).

@@attsealevel they're neat little dudes. I've worked with a lot of birds and yeah, they can fuck you up. Especially the bigger ones, like sulfur-cresteds, citrons and umbrellas. Not even starting on palms. Had a boss once who actually got himself pretty well maimed by an angry umbrella cockatoo we had for boarding, left this big long scar down from his shoulder and across his chest.
If cockatoos all just unanimously decided that they wanted to be pack hunters and take down large prey, I think humanity as a whole would be best off moving.

I have a cockatiel and 2 dogs, my cockatiel is always Stealing their food and biting them anytime theyre around.

You're incorrect on this not happening in the wild, I have seen this happen in a few locations when out camping. Birds are smart and like to push boundaries. I had a south Australian princes parrot that would wait until the dog was asleep and then go pull it's whiskers. Smart means easily bored... Children behave the same 😂

when I went camping as a kid there was a huge aviary full of cockatoos next to the visitors centre, one of them called out "give us a pat then, give us a pat" and I naive child that I was stuck my finger in and that bird clamped down with its beak and ripped a huge chunk of flesh from my knuckles, all the birds in the aviary then began loudly imitating human laughter... cockies are smart, evil bastards

I live in Queensland, Australia and share my environment with these beautiful, noisey, intelligent, destructive, big personality birds!! I love that they are still talking and arguing whilst in flight as all other birds seem to be silent. We also have black cockatoos who aren’t as abrasive or noisey but still very beautiful!!

I have a question about cockatoo’s strange behaviour ……. We found dozens of small, broken off, leafy branches lying under one of our very large old favourite gum trees in our yard & eventually noticed that it was a cockatoo just biting them off & dropping them ….. not chewing on them or picking off any grubs or anything, & it’s doing it so much we’re concerned for the tree’s life !!
Any ideas to help us understand !!

I'd suggest playing sounds of eagles around the times you know they show up. They're not going to show up if they think an eagle is flying around. Just pick a species of eagle native to the area. Owls / hawks might also do the trick. Unless eagles are a worry for kangaroo's then maybe not.

If you'd ever been bitten by a cockatoo you'd get out of their way too. Black cockatoos visit my macadamia trees and their beaks can crack those nuts where most nutcrackers fail.
Cockatoos and corvids absolutely do this in the wild. They are extremely intelligent animals who are curious and will exploit any trick that they find works. Tail pulling is especially common for when they want to pilfer food from larger animals.

I have three large cats and one Cockatoo. There is no doubt who's in charge. One cat was a kitten when I got her so she grew up with the bird and are essentially playmates, but, the bird makes the rules. The other two cats never saw a bird up close, but, learned quickly they were not the dominant animal in the house. It's not unusual to see all four on the cat tree just hanging out. The bird at the top.

This reminds me of several kinds of natural occurrences: 1) Squirrels will drive birds away from bird feeders to get the seeds.
2) Wax moths and several kinds of beetles will intrude into bee nests to steal their products, sometimes using pheromones to drive them off if necessary. The same thing occurs with butterfly larvae and ants.
3) Monkeys are known to regularly follow tropical birds and squirrels to special nut trees, then smacking them away to steal them.
4) Birds have been found to occasionally infiltrate bird boxes to destroy any nests inside, driving the owners away and letting the new birds nest.
5) Many large predators will fool or attack other predators to steal their kills, especially with bears and wolves or Hyenas and big cats.

They do not let the kockatoos do as they wish cuz theyre gentle though.. They stated in the end of the video that kangaroos cant turn their head back thus are inable to see nor locate the kockatoo before it escapes , the only method is walking in circle to turn around and attack the kockatoo but it would have flown before they can attack.

If you put the food on top of the shed for the parrots you won't have to worry about them bothering the kangaroos unless of course it has become a game. Cockatoos and parrots are very intelligent and very playful birds. If they were trying to hurt the kangaroos they would have already drawn blood. The pressure exerted by a parrot or cockatoo beak is enough to not only draw blood but to break bones.
Simple, there is a cat feeder with a chip that recognize its pair on the collar. Use that for the kangaroo, these are the kangaroo in the sanctuary right? When they are released then take off the collar

I have a pet cocky, the same species as you see in this video, and can attest to the fact that they are highly intelligent and very mischievous.
My Parents had exact same problem with the local hooded crows, they would taunt the dog while he was eating, the crows were clearly working together, one would distract the dog while the others help themselves to the dog's food.
Just feed both it''s hilarious and they clearly get along even with the tail nibbles xD

She was heartbroken about her kangaroos loosing their lives and getting hurt by the fire and her place burnt down..I was crying with her. If it was her I'm so happy she could start over.

Another suggestion is to provide separate food for the birds and slowly move their feeding station further and further away from the kangaroos over many weeks or months. Try to separate the feeding stations by at least half kilometer at the maximum maybe?
And feed the birds before the kangaroos so their appetite is low when the kangaroos get fed.
And then, slowly lessen the amount of food given to the birds over many weeks.
That and get some water in a spray bottle and squirt the birds every time they strike a kangaroo.
They will just eat the food provided and still go for the kangaroo's food after. The problem is providing any food for them at all. They need to get a super soaker and spray them anytime they bite the tails but, but have to be careful not to spook that kangaroo while doing so.
Nah.. U don't know parrots.. They're never satisfied.. And even if they are sated, they'll still poke and throw the food!
I hope they take your advice. I feel so bad for the kangaroos, it is so unfair for them to get bullied constantly.
It’s a nice thought but cockatoos are extremely clever. Also intentionally feeding them could just encourage more, the more food they get the worse they will become and it’s not good for them either. Also kangaroos are grazing animals so they eat all day and I would doubt they have 1 set feeding time that the owner could monitor constantly. Cockatoos cause lots of people a lot of problems, they are suuuch a pain but I love them they are so incredibly clever and mischievous! 😆
@@janemh5866 The cockatoos around here seem to feed all day too. They're not pets after all, so they're always on the scrounge.

Being a cockatoo owner myself, I can confirm this mischievous behavior is quite normal. He doesn't nip or bite me. He's just intelligent enough to figure out how to get me to give him what he wants.
I love kangaroos, I remember the times when I bottle-fed unforgettable joey K4 in Victoria, she was absolutely gorgeous and so sweet. Precious memories

Same behaviour as crows, birds are very intelligent animals.
I witnessed it myself, where crows would harass cats the same way to get to their plates.
My favourite trick of the crows was: The crow bit the tail, the cat jumped away briefly and then the crow would just turn the plate with the cat food upside down. Then the cats returned to feed, totally perplexed, because the food suddenly was GONE 😂 so they thought and they would go - the crow turns the plate back up, stuffs food in his beak to hide it everywhere on the property for later. They weren’t even hungry, you know 😂😍.

My grandparents had some that would visit on their verandah. My grandparents would throw some seeds and nuts out every once in a while. One day my grandparents stopped. A couple days later 100 odd cockatoos raided the verandah and ate all the rubber sealings off the rails and windows. Cockatoos dont just rob, they also extort.
@@enijize1234 can confirm, part of the daily routine in the old place I lived in was shooing the 30 odd cockatoos off the verandah
