    • @lilaclizard4504

      I don't think there is such a thing! There's been studies done recently on how they open wheelie bins, with different groups using different techniques, which they have assessed to mean they're learning from each other
      & just gotta add a comment I heard on a video about that, where someone said that in America a ranger was asked why they couldn't make bear proof bins & the reply was "there is considerable overlap between the smartest bear & the dumbest tourist". Same applies with the cockies

  • @lilaclizard4504
    @lilaclizard4504 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    For those worried these birds are starving, they're not! Quite the opposite, because food is so abundant for them, they have too much spare time on their hands, so they do stuff like this for entertainment.
    And yes, this is normal in Australia, these are our native birds, so they're everywhere in the wild & they're one of the native species that thrive in suburbia, so they're far more plentiful in cities now than they were before cities existed.
    They love grass seeds in lawns, whatever fruit & veg people are growing in their backyards & they're very good at "begging" for food, just turning up at people's doors & calling out in the hope that someone might come out to see them & bring food. If they get food, they will return to that house every day after that & once they get their human into a routine of feeding them daily (and buying seed for them), they'll turn up with friends & all expect to be fed. Because finding food is so easy, they have most of the day free to just play & going through bins to find different texture & tasting materials is play for cockies.
    Rainbow lorikeets are the other species that are found in huge numbers in cities & that know humans are attracted to their pretty colours & personalities & so, like the cockies, have no fear of humans & will demand food & get it, leaving themselves with lots of spare time to just play. Lorikeets & cockies tend to be very tame & will take food from humans hands & land on humans hands & heads, partly to get the food, partly just for laughs, they're characters & enjoy doing things they find funny & also enjoy doing things humans find funny & seem to get entertainment from human laughs. Cockies also seem to get great enjoyment from upsetting humans, such as from eating their entire wooden deck & they also love to impersonate pterodactyls, flying over homes in large flocks screeching at the same volume as a jet engine. And us Aussie humans clearly have a sense of humour too, cause despite all of this, we build "bush corridors" throughout our cities, which are pathways of trees, that allow our wildlife to freely move around the cities. You can see that if you look on goggle maps :)

    These birds are not hungry or deprived of natural habitat. they are definitely bored and just causing trouble. Parrots just do that. In Australia cockatoos are as common as pigeons or seagulls here in the states. You don't have the word "bin" there? Wow, I never realised that!
      Look up our "bin chickens", that's an even better term imo :) (if it doesn't come up easily, Ibis birds are called "bin chickens" cause of their affinity to rubbish bins. Recently our former Premier in NSW got the name "bin chicken" too, cause she's of Armenian decent & so has a nose that reminds people of a bin chicken & they weren't happy with her management of covid, so she got herself a nickname)

    • @aeden8008
      @aeden8008 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Year old comment but oh well. The reason they rummage like this is because of people giving them "clean food." It's the case with most wildlife that comes in contact with humans. We feed them, and they lose their fear of humans. Then they proceed to rummage through our trash for any little tasty nuggets they can find.
      Also, cockatoos are very smart, these were likely just doing this for kicks.

      It's ok, once they move in, they take control of who else is allowed to visit THEIR house :) Lorikeets in particular will always have a dominate pair that lay down the law for all the others & keep them in line when visiting. Cockies, being cockies do tend to invite their friends over for a party every now & again, even if they know it's inappropriate. Just make sure the house you choose has no timber outside of it, cause with your attitude, there won't be any left lol it will become a "chew toy" VERY quickly & end up a pile of sawdust on the ground & what it used to secure will become an entry point for them to welcome themselves inside, where they can go through your pantry finding all your goodies to play with :)
