I shot a bull moose last year with the 200gr jagger broadhead and was extremely impressed with its performance. I shoot an Apa Mamba 33xr with an 82lb 31.5in draw. Total arrow weight is 640gr traveling at 290fps. I shot the moose at 73 yards and the first arrow went in quartered away a bit and broke the opposite side shoulder dropping it in it's tracks. It started to get up and it was close to a ravine so i shot it again quartered hard towards me. The second arrow entered its chest and was sticking out 14 inches from the right rear of the right ham. I was not expecting almost full length penetration on a bull moose!

There's no doubt this system has to be the most thought out functional heavy arrow design EVER! Amazed at its ability shooting thru the sheet metal with no damage.
I've been waiting ever since the first message I sent that you responded to about testing this particular Broadhead and I couldn't be more pleased with the task you've done that you absolutely sold this broadhead for that company with the test you done in my eyes. I ordered the full steel model, however I'm unsure until tomorrow if they know that I'm looking for the short 1. I wrote them a comment since it was hard to designate off their website short or regular. Also ordered the sleeves, wheel, wax. field points & the whole ball of wax, including the wax.
Simmons Treeshark 190 Grain. 2” cut two blade fixed head, most commonly used by traditional archers but according to the manufacturer will fly well out of compounds. The photos of game hit with the tree sharks are insane. They have the same swept blade design as Valkyrie but scaled up.
Lusk Archery Adventures no worries. I purchased a few a while back and couldn’t get them tuned, I’m pretty sure it was due to my local shop at the time. They weren’t the best at tuning anything. They make a solid 200 grain version that’s not as wide. The original “vented” 190 grain is wicked looking and does a tremendous amount of damsge

Thanks John! I was interested how these stacked up in your testing. I shot my bull elk last year with the 180gr short jag at 14yds broadside. Clean pass through and buried in the dirt. Held up well but was no longer sharp. I didn’t like that I had to sand the shaft for the sleeve to fit my goldtip pierces though.
Yeah, I hear you on that; it is a very finely tuned system. Not surprised it was no longer sharp after passing through a bull elk and burying in the dirt :)

In slower bows, the longer head helps with penetration. But out of a compound bow, at least, the longer heads penetrate less effectively at least in the mediums I use. There is extra friction over that longer length and also they are less forgiving in flight. I prefer shorter at compound bow speeds.

Man, lots of good ones. It depends on what I'm hunting. Bishop makes the most durable for sure. The Iron Will Wide Solid is really nice--one of my faves, and also the Iron Will Single Bevel with bleeders. But there are a lot of great options besides those.
I'm surprised this did not penetrate further than the Magnus Black Hornet.....was it the different arrow set up? What is the weight of the Valkyrie set up compared to your normal arrow combination?
Ya know, it's really funny what happens in gel sometimes. As much as it is designed to imitate human flesh, it does so more accurately with bullet impact than arrow penetration. That being said, Magnus are true cut on contact heads and are known for their excellent penetration. This set up was a different arrow, but the total weight was the same. I was careful to make sure of that.
How much did you have to tune to get them to fly? Also what was the arrow length and weight? I have the SR6 28 in draw at 70lbs. Is that similar to your set up? Thanks
I didn't have to tune them to fly at all. I was shooting a new arrow for this test and had to make sure that arrow was tuned, but I always just screw on a head and shoot it, with no tuning. Arrow length is 25.5", 27"; draw at 72 lbs.
Hey John, which model have the S7 tool steel? All I see for the premium solid listed heads is Titanium. Is the S7 something new? I'm looking to get the S7 short 180's or 200's with the outsert & long insert.

john i am new to archery, i drew an elk tag in New Mexico, and was just wondering if you any advice for me about using fixed or mechanical broad heads?
I've been strictly a bowhunters for forty years. I cannot advise more strongly against using a mechanical broadhead for elk. Way too high a risk for inadequate penetration. For really tough skinned wildlife like elk there really is nothing better than a traditionally shaped broadhead, either a 2 or 3 blade. That means a 3-1 ratio of length to width. The broadhead tested is a good place to start.
Hey Brandon. That's a great question. Over the years, I've been more of a fixed blade head guy for elk. Those animals can be extremely tough. If your shots are inside of 60 yds, any decent fixed head should fly well out of a well tuned bow. However, there are now would mechs that are much more durable and penetrate much more effectively than many fixed blade heads...and they are much more forgiving in flight or in windy conditions. The best I've seen is the Sevr 1.5. It's got a smaller cut than most mechs, so it penetrates very well, and the blades can swing side to side to pivot around bone, if needed. And I've shot them thru steel plate 5 times and they held up. I even shot one into a cinder block 3 times and it help up fine. I have zero hesitation in using them for elk. Check out my vids of the Sevr 1.5. That all being said, again, if your shots are under 60, you can't go wrong with a tough fixed blade head.
Some of their heads are S7 and some are not; it depends on the model. I've not tested Day Six, but I'm not a huge fan of using s30v in a broadhead application due to it's tendency to experience edge chatter; it's know for having that same problem in survival knives. It's an incredible steel for cutting, but just chips too easily. Solid Legends have that same steel and I've seen it happen many times.
Lusk Archery Adventures I agree with you. Thats why I wanted to see them tested. The owner brags a ton about it though and they seem very confident. I’m also not a fan of non solids but he also says it’s makes them stronger. Idk how though.
With a good shot, both would do very well. For Whitetail, I like to use as big of a head as I can get, and still get a pass thru. I think the Iron Will Wide is tough to beat for that. But these will probably zip right thru a shoulder.
IMO Iron Will are second to none (excluding Bishop) $$ 🙈 but the Valkyrie are to be desired. Alot of people been waiting for John to stress test today's broadheads & a job well done. Now we can all exhale 😁
I can't remember what I did in this vid now, but I thought I did test the penetration of both. But I didn't shoot them both thru steel, cause they're the same in terms of durability.
A question for you. I don't think you have run the Bishop heads through your more recent test system yet but how would you compare the Valkyrie to the Bishop heads such as the Holy Trinity and the Scientific Method? Also whats was the weight of the total arrow system for the Valkyries? Thank you, that was another great review.
I do need to do the Bishops thru my 2020 testing. I'm planning to do that in the upcoming weeks.The weight of this arrow was the same as the weight of my typical set up, even though they were different arrows--460 grs.
They are both very durable heads, but a fairly different design, as you can see. I would imagine the Short Jag would out penetrate the Annihilator, most of the time, in an animal. Which would do more damage to tissue? I'm not sure cause I've not hunted with either of them yet.
Hey that's a good one. You're funny. Clearly the test was designed to display the potential for the head and not a realistic interpretation of what a deer might be wearing.....
I'm just providing data points so we can all choose the best broadheads for our personal set ups and animals we're pursuing. If a head can hold up to a steel plate, then that's a good indicator of its overall durability and edge integrity. Is it necessary? Nope. But if there are two heads you're choosing from and one can hold up to 5 shots and one loses a blade on the first shot, and all other things are equal between the two heads, wouldn't you pick the one that can hold up? We owe it to the animals we're hunting to use the most effective equipment we can afford.

I would not, unless I were going after something really really big. There are a lot of great fix blade Broadheads. The QAD exodus is certainly one of them. But these Valkyrie heads are extremely well-made.
@@jayytee8062 they have their center pin system for micro diameter shafts in the jagger broadheads. The blood eagle broadheads are for standard diameter shafts. Same heads, different threads.
It was actually less than the shorter one...that happens with many mediums, as the increased surface area creates more surface friction and impedes penetration.
That would be "per head." They're not cheap; they are definitely in the Premium Price Category...certainly not for everyone's budget, but as long as you don't lose them, they'll last a lifetime.
These used to be good but they are getting pretty monotonous. He needs to start changing it up some and do different things and change up the mediums from time to time and maybe some more “real” world examples. So one can see how they do on materials and substances more similar to what hunters are going after
Thank you for watching and for the comment. I have updated my protocol a bit in 2021. The goal of my tests is to provide comparative data points, so you can see how heads perform in the exact same tests. Therefore, the mediums must be consistent. I do a lot of hunting and post those vids as well...using a lot of different heads. But animals or animal parts vary significantly in their geometry and density, so using them in testing does not provide any true, comparative data. If you have any suggestions for consistent mediums other than MDF, Rubber Mat, FBI Gel, steel plate and concrete, then I'd love to hear them. These seem to simulate bone, hide, tissue fairly well.

Not impressed!! Where's the smaller heads testing? Why does both versions and test one? Your consistency on testing has tapered off to the point your "score sheets" are nullified..... just my opinion but really thinking of unfollowing....
Unfollow then you wont be missed, clearly we all like to see his reviews and he spends a lot of time and money spent on broadheads to do these tests for us. Dont try to rob a guy of his passion, you think you can do it better start a channel and do it yourself..... just my opinion.....
I'm not sure what you are talking about, Jason. I did show the testing of the Short Jag. I didn't shoot the Jagger thru the steel cause they're basically the same head made with the same materials, so there's no point of testing it twice. The Jagger penetrated slightly less in the gel than the Short Jag due to the gel contacting more surface area.

On their site they only mention high carbon steel, but the owner/designer assured me the Jagger/Short Jags are S7.
Some models centerpin is titanium. But all heads are tool steel

how come you didnt do the concrete block test for these arrows?
I just started doing the Concrete test again in 2021. I used to do it a few years ago, but didn't do it in my testing in 2020.
How do they compare to iron wills do they run close in comparison
Well, they have very different dimensions. But both penetrate very well and are very durable.
Valkyrie or iron will recommendation for white tail ? I shoot lower poundage ; would you have a preference. Thank you very much

Isn't a curved edge a pain to sharpen, even more so with 3 of them?
They are sure not as easy as a straight edge, but with a wheel or a rounded stone or Stay Sharp sharpener, it's not too bad.
Thats why they sell a sharpening kit that they use at the shop to sharpen

How does this compare to annihilator other than the weight?
They are both very durable heads, but a fairly different design, as you can see. I would imagine the Short Jag would out penetrate the Annihilator, most of the time, in an animal. Which would do more damage to tissue? I'm not sure cause I've not hunted with either of them yet.

Hey that's a good one. You're funny. Clearly the test was designed to display the potential for the head and not a realistic interpretation of what a deer might be wearing.....
I'm just providing data points so we can all choose the best broadheads for our personal set ups and animals we're pursuing. If a head can hold up to a steel plate, then that's a good indicator of its overall durability and edge integrity. Is it necessary? Nope. But if there are two heads you're choosing from and one can hold up to 5 shots and one loses a blade on the first shot, and all other things are equal between the two heads, wouldn't you pick the one that can hold up? We owe it to the animals we're hunting to use the most effective equipment we can afford.
Only disadvantage I see is to sharpen them. Must be a challenge.
Well, with a paper wheel it's pretty easy, but with a stone, it would take some finessing.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Hmm... I'm skeptical. Guess a paper wheel is to big and a Dremel should be used. And using a Dremel requires practice and without you can easily ruin them.
What’s was the penetration for the jagger?
I must have left that off; I didn't do the full test on the Jagger. It actually penetrated 1/2" less than the Short Jag, I think due to the gel contacting more surface area.

Would you use this over your qad's?
I would not, unless I were going after something really really big. There are a lot of great fix blade Broadheads. The QAD exodus is certainly one of them. But these Valkyrie heads are extremely well-made.

@@jayytee8062 they have their center pin system for micro diameter shafts in the jagger broadheads. The blood eagle broadheads are for standard diameter shafts. Same heads, different threads.

I didn't shoot these arrows thru a chrono. However, they are the same weight as my normal set up and I am getting 260 fps with a 460 gr arrow

Since they are double bevel can I touch them up with my DMT stones & touch them up will my saddle leather strop?
Yes, but it will take some finessing to stick to that bevel and not mess it up. Go slowly and lightly and you can do it.
How far did the 200gn penetrate?
The Jagger penetrated about a half inch less than the Short Jag. Total arrow weight was the same for both.

Yeah, they're not for everyone's budget, that's for sure.
How much penatration did the longer one get?
It was actually less than the shorter one...that happens with many mediums, as the increased surface area creates more surface friction and impedes penetration.

That would be "per head." They're not cheap; they are definitely in the Premium Price Category...certainly not for everyone's budget, but as long as you don't lose them, they'll last a lifetime.
They go through all that trouble to make a nice Broadhead and then it's only 1 inch diameter. Smh
Yeah, like I said in the vid, these are designed for maximum penetration and not for huge cut size. Everything is a tradeoff.

These used to be good but they are getting pretty monotonous. He needs to start changing it up some and do different things and change up the mediums from time to time and maybe some more “real” world examples. So one can see how they do on materials and substances more similar to what hunters are going after

The goal of my tests is to provide comparative data points, so you can see how heads perform in the exact same tests. Therefore, the mediums must be consistent. I do a lot of hunting and post those vids as well...using a lot of different heads. But animals or animal parts vary significantly in their geometry and density, so using them in testing does not provide any true, comparative data. If you have any suggestions for consistent mediums other than MDF, Rubber Mat, FBI Gel, steel plate and concrete, then I'd love to hear them. These seem to simulate bone, hide, tissue fairly well.

Not impressed!! Where's the smaller heads testing? Why does both versions and test one? Your consistency on testing has tapered off to the point your "score sheets" are nullified..... just my opinion but really thinking of unfollowing....
Unfollow then you wont be missed, clearly we all like to see his reviews and he spends a lot of time and money spent on broadheads to do these tests for us. Dont try to rob a guy of his passion, you think you can do it better start a channel and do it yourself..... just my opinion.....
I'm not sure what you are talking about, Jason. I did show the testing of the Short Jag. I didn't shoot the Jagger thru the steel cause they're basically the same head made with the same materials, so there's no point of testing it twice. The Jagger penetrated slightly less in the gel than the Short Jag due to the gel contacting more surface area.
