    I add more castor oil no stearic acid or lactate. I find olive oil is good for hands but definitely makes soap softer

    Thank you for this video. I plan to make this dish soap soon. As a hobby soap maker, I still consider myself a beginner. I need to scale down the recipe and calculated that 9 oz of water is 27% of the 33 oz total oils. In my lye calculator, do I check off "Water as percentage oils" and enter 27%? That seems very low. Thank you in advance for your guidance on this.

    Thank you so much for your videos, you are so inspiring! I just made these and I soaped too hot so they kinda volcanoed in my molds. Lesson learned :) I have a quick question about PH, if I test right after putting them in the mold and they've hardened a bit should the PH be around 9 or will it be higher right off then lower after they have set & they're actually ready to unmold?

    • @EllenRuthSoap

    If I didn't want to add essential oils to this, would it be ok to add ground lemon and/or orange peels? Do you think it would leave bits of stuff behind, or would the scent even come through that way?

    • @EllenRuthSoap

    Hello Ellen, thank you so much for sharing this recipe. I have tried a very small quantity (200g 😉) and I had a funny surprise: a few minutes after pouring the soaps in the moulds, they started to react like small volcanoes 😳🤣. I am a beginner and as I have read that if we use Stearic Acid it needs a hotter soaping temperature (at least 160 ° F) to make sure it stays melted ... Does the mistake come from that? Thank you so much again for all your videos, I learn a lot with you, and from my mistakes too, haha 😅

    Hi Ellen, so, I just boiled down some dark beer, now when you made your lye solution with it, did you freeze it, or did you just make it after it cooled all the way down?

    • @EllenRuthSoap

      If you add the lye slowly, you don't need to freeze it.

      You have to boil the carbonation out of it for about 20 minutes, let it cool down and you can mix your lye in slowly.

    I made some of the solid dish soap and the color is weird. I didn't use any fragrance or essential oils. Most of the bar is a light tan color and then at the top of the bar (what was exposed to the air) is a layer of white. I just pulled them out of the molds and haven't tested the pH yet because I was curious as to why it looks the way it does. Do you know?

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like soda ash, which won't effect the pH and it rinses off after a couple of uses.

    I would like to incorporate hemp seed oil and was thinking I could modify the olive oil from 4 oz to 2 oz and add 2 oz hemp seed oil. Would this change the outcome significantly?

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you change the oils, you'll need to run it thru soap calc. Each oil has a different sap value...

  • @LisaSaliture

    I currently do not have any olive oil or coconut oil for this recipe, but how would a hemp seed oil work in place?

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you change a soap recipe at all, you need to run the numbers thru a soap calculator, they may have different sap values and change the lye amount.

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good quesitons. No you don't need to add the essential oil to the volume of oils. Most calculators will have a scent % area. For this recipe, because it's fast moving, I recommend the full water amount at 38%.

    So Is it safe to say that regular soap is skin safe after a week also?

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  ปีที่แล้ว

      The pH of soap is “skin safe” after 3-4 days, the cure time is waiting for the extra water to evaporate and make a harder, longer lasting bar.
