Ellen you can also take baking soda and put it on a baking sheet and put it in the oven on low for 200 keep an eye on it think I was told to keep it in the oven for a few hours and it's basically what washing soda is:) Hope that helps!
Ellen, I use homemade laundry soap, because my 20 year old Autistic son had horrible eczema. I started making soap, skin care when Wyatt was 8, he's now about to turn 21. About 2 years into making soap, I made my first laundry detergent. Between my homemade soap, cream, and laundry detergent, Wyatt hasn't had a breakout in 12 years or so. Wyatt understands not to use regular soap. He takes a bar of homemade soap and his cream everywhere we go. Including hotels, even to Disney, lol! 😂😂😂 I love your recipe for laundry detergent, it looks like a good one! ❤❤❤
This is the best laundry soap recipe I have ever tried! Ellen, you are so kind to share these wonderful gifts with all of us! I will never buy commercial laundry soap again❤️
I just love your channel! I’m a nurse, working full time, a soap maker for the past 12 years ( my mom has a local store) and you are a joy to watch. Thanks for all you do!
So I love this recipe for whites and light colors. I do question the liquid formula only because I know with percarbonate, once it mixes into water, it activates, and only stays activated for a couple hours or so based off my own research. I’m assuming that’s why you got the foaming at the end when you mixed it. do you think it is worth putting the percarbonate in the liquid solution or maybe saving money and making a solution without the percarbonate, or just mixing your powder in with warm water and then throwing it in your tub just before you start your darks. Just some thoughts and opinions , absolutely love this mixture and has been doing wonderful for me !
I have seen many videos of how to make laundry soap and I really love this video. This one is my favorite thank you for sharing and the extra tips. I hope you get more likes and followers 🤗
Hello Helen thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! I have tried your grocery store soap recipe and was super proud of myself. Today I tried your detergent, I washed with it and my clothes came out nice and clean! Thanks for being such an amazing teacher. I’m a new soaper and still trying to understand the ingredients in percentages.
Can you tell me, did they smell good too? I love my clothes to have a fresh scent and I would really like for them to smell like I want if I make this. Thank you in advance for your information.
I LOVE learning from you, Ellen, you truly give freely and with all of your heart. That shines through on what you are sharing and are willing to take the time to share with us. I love your videos and how you teach ❤
This recipe is amazing! My ratios were close, but a little heavier on the soap gratings. It’s worked so well on my laundry that, when confronted with cleaning a patch of concrete in my garage where friends had hung their deer a few days before, I grabbed this laundry soap, dissolved it and drizzled it on the stain. It came up in seconds with just a couple passes of a push broom. Thank you for sharing your recipe!❤❤❤
I love this idea. I’ve been making soap for a long time. I’ve accumulated bucket loads of soap shavings from bevelling soap. Honestly, bucket loads… do you think I could use these soap shavings in your recipe. I no longer know what shavings were which soap lol. Yes they’re chock full of ingredients and some colour.
Yours is the video I’ve been waiting for! I have been wanting to make laundry soap for about a year and I’ve been looking for help on TH-cam but today I found the one that I want to make❤ thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us soapers❤
I just made my second round of this laundry soap and I love how easy and cheap it is to make and works as good if not better then store bought! Thank you for this Ellen! love all your videos
Thank you! I was so happy to see one of your videos pop up while looking for tips on DIY laundry soap. And how cool to see the ease of making it a liquid detergent! We have well water so I always have to use a little extra soap and I add borax to each load. I like this idea of it all being in one mix, do I don’t feel like a mad scientist with all my soaps and additives each time I do a load of laundry 😅
What a blessing you are for sharing your knowledge. Thank you for all you do for the soaping community and us new soapers!! I continue to search your videos for information and learn so much from you.
Hi Ellen, I love your channel, you are such an inspiration. I am an aromatherapist and soap maker. You have inspired me to make this laundry soap. Is this laundry soap suitable for babies as my daughter is expecting her first child and I would like to make a gentle laundry soap for her? ❤
Ellen, I just stumbled on your videos while searching for laundry detergent recipes. Now I am binging on your videos and am so inspiried! At first, I was wondering why you would give away your recipes but now I get it. Even if I do decide to try out a few, there is no way I would make all of the ones that I would want and you have just acquired a new customer!!! Love your openess and passion for soap making. Can't wait to try your products! Now, the only problem is which ones to try first! lol
My dear Ellen, I just made the detergent recipe. I tried using a blender, and it didn’t worked for me. So I used my ninja, I did the coconut soap last night and did everything exactly as you said. I did the liquid soap. Haven’t tried it yet but it looks good. Thank you so much for your recipe. Like I always say you are my inspiration, and for me you are the best. Ivon
You should use distilled less than 5% acidity vinegar that way it won't corrode your rubber seals and pipes. I use it as a fabric softener and a rinse aid in my dishwasher.
I enjoy making my own laundry soap. I have the same brand of sodium percarbonate but I hadn't thought of including it when I make my powdered laundry soap....I just made a batch recently...I'll just add some sodium percarbonate to it ! I use Borateem, washing soda, baking soda & a plant-based soap. I use various scents of bar soap. I always grate the soap on the finest side of my box grater. A long time ago, I tried using my food processor, but oh my gosh.....dust was flying out of it & I was coughing. So I prefer to just use the finest side of the box grater. Some people don't think it's necessary to use baking soda along w/washing soda because baking soda is what's used to create washing soda. But I use both. I use 2 tablespoons for a large load & have had great results. There's just my husband & me & we don't have major laundry challenges.
Thank you for so detailed video. I'm impressed with packaging, labeling, look very clean and on the point. I have a few questions for you: first - what brand your blender is and second, what kind of pencil or pen you use for your black labels. I have several paper sheets of same looking black steackers, but can't make them work.
Ellen, I so appreciate this recipe! I lost my original powered laundry soap recipe and had all of these ingredients laying around. You are a total lifesaver! Thank you so much
Thank you Ellen. Was planning to make laundry soap, but didn't how to tackle it. This is a great way to get started. It will save me a lot. Thanks again!
Thank you Ellen. This is so helpful and I love the way you took pains to explain everything clearly. One question - could we not use cold process, zero superfast, DISH soap grated up for this recipie? Thank you in advance.
Giiirl!!!! I love that ur making this! I’ve been homemaking our laundry detergent since 2020! I use zote, fels naptha, baking soda, laundry soda, oxy clean, borax and gain scent boosters and we looove it. One big batch lasts us about 3 months and costs us about the same as one big bottle of gain! I’m definitely going to try this tho! Looks amazing
Oh my, this is wonderful. Thank you for sharing. Definitely going to try this. I was pleasantly surprised at the end when you turned the powder into liquid. Blessings.
Hello, I saw your video and was very excited to try it out. I bought all the ingredients and made the laundry detergent, just this past Saturday. I still have not used it because I still have some remaining from the store bought detergent. Anyway, on Sunday a video appeared from a homesteader explaining why she doesn't use homemade laundry soap any more. Some of her claims are that homemade Landry soap is bad for the High Efficiency (HE) machines, also that after time her towels weren't able to absorb water, and her clothes became stingy and dirty looking. You can imagine how I felt. So my question to you is, how long have you used your homemade detergent and if you have experienced any of her claims?
Hi! I made this soap just like you did. I LOVE it! I ended up making a huge amount! I am wondering if you have ever used fragrance oils in it? If so, how did that turn out?
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I love all your tutorials and just beginning my journey into DIY products. I purchased a premixed lye solution of 50/50 sodium hydroxide. Would I measure out 28grams of the solution and then add the extra distilled water?
I am so glad you made this video!! I saw Elly’s Everyday, I think like 2 years ago, and haven’t made any detergent yet🙈 And I have a bunch of coconut soap I made for that purpose- it’s well past time for me to just do it😅
Great information, i learn something new today, like the sodium percarbonate, I buy 2 big boxes of oxi- clean few months ago, because i dont like to buy little by little and didnt know about that item, I just order the sodium from a company that cost me less then amazon. I have been doing that soap for a long time, but my problem is that leaves the clothes looking dingy and i have to do strip clean sometimes, but since where i live the water is hard, i stopped using castile soap and instead I add a little of salt to the washing machine, I will try to introduce the castile soap again with this new sodium, and ill monitor how it works. thanks for the tip.
Thank you for sharing this soap is great. I do have a hair press that works perfectly I just swipe it once from end to end it so much easier then pulling out ol' Blue my heat press.
@@EllenRuthSoap wish me good luck- I will experiment and if/ when I succeed I’ll share with you😊as you share these amazing videos so generously with all of us
I am glad you shared these recipes! I make soaps and am glad to see these. I make whipped laudry soap (has no suds but cleans well) but wanted to make liquid as well as powdered and now I have it!😊 Thanks again!!
Ellen! You are the best! Thank you so much for this recipe! I have been using Ellys recipe for many years now and recently saw your video. I wanted to ask, do you think it would be ok to do a 1:1 ratio with washing soda and grated soap? (And leave all other ingredients the same)Then i would only need 1tbsp for each load? Ellys is a 1:1 with the washing soda &soap. But doesnt use the other ingredients and only uses 1 tbsp. (For the recipe ive been using) I wondered if you think this would work upping the soap portion? Thanks so much for all your helpful videos! You have taught me so much over the years and i truly appreciate all your time spent teaching us! I still believe you are the Martha Stewart of the soap world! ❤
I’m so glad you’re using metric measurements as my country hasn’t used imperial measurements for decades. It’s so much more accurate when measuring small quantities.
Hi, I’ve made this type of laundry soap before; however, the question I have is, with all of these various ingredients that must be purchased, can you make it for less per ounce than what you can buy a natural manufactured laundry detergent per ounce or per a one load amount? Hmmm…. Well, thanks for sharing. I make fragrance free, but I like the idea of adding the lemon essential oil.
Also, is there a thickening agent I can add to the liquid version to prevent separation? I use xanthan gum in my Zote-based formula, but it increases the viscosity over time, which sucks.
I’ve been making my own for a while and never thought to food process it! Great idea. Also I’m intrigued by your coconut soap I’ve always used Fels Naptha , how does it compare to that?
My quart of liquid soap developed hard chunky pieces. I want to use a squirt bottle as a stain treatment, but I'm afraid it will clog. Do I use my stick blender to break up the chunks? Will they form again?
Enjoyed the video and will have to try the recipe! Question about the label: Do you need to add the lye and coconut oil to the ingredient list as it was part of the soap that was grated into it?
Thanks so much for all you do! I may make my first batch with an already grated soap. I saw that Zote has one and there's another made with tallow. Do you think the grated tallow based soap would be ok? Thanks again!!
Doesn’t the amount of water affect the effectiveness/“pureness” of the liquid soap so as also to change the cleaning power & the amount of liquid soap to use? Having said that, how much liquid soap to use for a load?
@EllenRuthSoap could i use the liquid laundry soap as a dishwasher (machine) detergent? Found your channel yesterday and ive been binge watching your videos, wow, ive learned so much ❤ thank you ❤
Hello Ellen! Thank you so much for sharing! This recipe is amazing I can’t wait to try it. I wanted to tell that I use an old school salad shooter to grate soap and it works amazing and so fast! Give it a try! ❤
Hi again Ruth I just wanted to give you an update on this washing detergent powder recipe. Now when I was using shop bought pods which I chucked into my drum never the detergent compartments I would get a dodgy stagnant water smell and mold in my drawer where the water flows from the pipes into my washer, also if I didn't pull the load out and left it overnight in the washing machine the clothes would stink and have to be washed again and I had to leave the door open so it wouldn't smell . Since using your recipe my washer doesn't smell even after the door has been shut and leaving the clothes in over night there's no smell at all no stagnant water smell or mold in my drawer either. I will never go back to shop bought crap it was obviously damaging my machine and pipes. I have a washing machine insurance and they recommend using a washing machine cleaner, I was using that every few weeks, not now I don't need it.
I think its the addition of sodium percarbonate, its a really good bleach alternative, when i bought the pure ingredient the bottle mentioned many cleaning benefits including mould and mildew removal.
Love your videos ❤️🔥 now this may be a dumb questions but if I use my blender I have like a little smoothie blender . Can I clean it real good and still use it for my smoothies or do I need one just for soap ?
Hello Ellen, This is going to be my first try at a laundry soap. My thinking is to make a 100% coconut oil soap to substitute for the bar soap. Would it follow that I would also use 114 gr of liquid soap then? Looking forward to your response.
Ellen, I love your citrus dish soap, and now this laundry detergent as well. Thank you so much for being so generous with your knowledge. I’m curious, have you ever made dishwasher pods? I’m playing around with a few recipes but so far have not been 100% happy with any of them.
im using washing soda, baking soda, kosher salt and lemon juice. I think it recipe cleans well, I like the absence of chemicals, but it leaves a white film on the glasses. I could use your genius mind…..😊💗
Also, I wanted to say, I’m making your conditioner bars, your body lotion, and your caffeine eye cream and love them all. Again thank you so much for sharing your recipes….they are pure luxury while being safe to use. I’m grateful to you.
Ellen, thank you for sharing this recipe! Question....I have dish bar soap that I've made, not 100% coconut oil, but 95% coconut oil and 5% castor. Still okay to use?
I'm planning on making this laundry soap, thank you. I already have a product called Oxy Clean whose ingredients are: Disodium carbonate ; Sodium percarbonate , Alcohols, C12-15, ethoxylated. Do you think I can use this in space of the sodium percarbonate in your recipe? Thanks!
For the liquid soap, I think you said that after it sits overnight to congeal, you add water to the top of the jar. Is that correct? I didn’t see you add water so I’m a bit confused. Thank you!
@EllenRuthSoap so, could a person just turn it all into liquid soap then? Would there be a way of keeping it from getting clumpy? An emulsifier somehow? 🤷♀️
I can’t wait to try out your recipe! Ordering my ingredients this morning. Thank you for being so open in sharing your recipes and techniques. You have quickly become my fave channel for relevant information and enjoyable, relaxing to watch content💕 P.S. I’ve been a soap and product maker myself for 35+ years.
@@EllenRuthSoap I tried it and it’s wonderful. Just a quick question the coconut soap even though I grated it seems to be clumping up in the washing machine attachment where we put the powder. How can I avoid that ?
This is wonderful…. I’m wondering how you figure out how much fragrance oil ( not essential oil ) you can use . I have so much fragrance oil I use for wax tarts can use
Thank you for this inspiring and instructive video! Have you tried this laundry detergent on silk and wool? I read somewhere that washing soda might be to harsh on silk and wool, but maybe it depends on the concentration? I can’t wait to start making this soap and detergent!!! 31:21
Yes, you can use any soap you like knowing that some have more ingredients in them... You can leave out the percarbonate, but I think it really adds to the cleansing ability.
Hello, Ellen. You mentioned the dry detergent would dissolve nicely with warm water. Is this not recommended with cold water? How much is recommended to use per load?
I definitely loved this video, Ellen!❤️ Thank you very much for sharing so much knowledge.
That's great, thanks so much Ellen. Your channel is growing so much! Fabulous
Thanks so much!🌼
Thank you for sharing this soap is great. I do have a hair press that works perfectly I just swipe it once from end to end it so much easier then pulling out ol' Blue my heat press.
thank you for your (as usual) upbeat and precise instructions- please advise: how can i make this recipe into a laundry gel?
Thanks❣️ I’m not sure how to make a gel out of this formula.
This recipe is flexible, you can adjust the soap up a bit, and tweak the ratios a bit... I suggest trying a small test batch and see how you like it.
Thank you! Im going to try your recipe first and see how that works out! Thank you so much!
Yes, after purchasing all the individual ingredients and making a large batch, it's cheaper to make homemade.
Thsnk you for this awesome video! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Also, is there a thickening agent I can add to the liquid version to prevent separation? I use xanthan gum in my Zote-based formula, but it increases the viscosity over time, which sucks.
Glad you enjoyed it!🌼
I don't like to add more ingredients, so I just give it a shake😉
I’ve been making my own for a while and never thought to food process it! Great idea. Also I’m intrigued by your coconut soap I’ve always used Fels Naptha , how does it compare to that?
I prefer to make my own, but the Fels Naptha is just as good in the final product.
Could you use dendritic salt when adding scent, to hold the smell longer?
You could add a bit👍
I hoping for laundry scent booster recipe next! 😀@@EllenRuthSoap
I have been looking for a good laundry soap recipe and this one looks awesome. I’ll definitely give it a try. Thank you for sharing.
Hope you like it as much as I do🌼
Awesome
Hello, Ms. Ellen, I made this and love it. I am wondering if you would consider this gentle enough to use as a baby laundry detergent, also?
I would say yes. I use it for my grandbabies laundry when they visit😉
@@EllenRuthSoap ok! Sounds great! Thank you!
Hi Ellen, beautiful video, checking if this detergent powder can be used for both colored and white clothes. Many thanks.
Yes, I use it for both👍
My quart of liquid soap developed hard chunky pieces.
No, you don’t need to put the soap ingredients, just label as soap.
Thanks so much for all you do! I may make my first batch with an already grated soap. I saw that Zote has one and there's another made with tallow. Do you think the grated tallow based soap would be ok? Thanks again!!
Yes, tallow soap will be great in this👍
Perfect!!! Thanks so much for the speedy reply!!@@EllenRuthSoap
Doesn’t the amount of water affect the effectiveness/“pureness” of the liquid soap so as also to change the cleaning power & the amount of liquid soap to use? Having said that, how much liquid soap to use for a load?
When I'm using the powder, I use about 1/8C and when I use the liquid I'll use just shy of 1/4C for a large load.
@EllenRuthSoap could i use the liquid laundry soap as a dishwasher (machine) detergent? Found your channel yesterday and ive been binge watching your videos, wow, ive learned so much ❤ thank you ❤
Welcome! Glad you found me. I haven't tried it in the dishwasher, so I'm not sure??
Hello Ellen! Thank you so much for sharing! This recipe is amazing I can’t wait to try it. I wanted to tell that I use an old school salad shooter to grate soap and it works amazing and so fast! Give it a try! ❤
That's a great tip for grating the soap! Thanks.
This is awesome! Thank you for sharing💗
Thank you for sharing
I think its the addition of sodium percarbonate, its a really good bleach alternative, when i bought the pure ingredient the bottle mentioned many cleaning benefits including mould and mildew removal.
Of the dry laundry soap how much do you use per load?
Great tutorial, thank you. Will coconut oil not clog up the plumbing
when adding fragrance oil at the end instead of in the soap itself, do you add 3% of the fragrance oil to the total weight of the finished product?
You can, but I would recommend less scent so it's not too strong
Love your videos ❤️🔥 now this may be a dumb questions but if I use my blender I have like a little smoothie blender . Can I clean it real good and still use it for my smoothies or do I need one just for soap ?
Yes, as long as it's super clean, you're good to go👍
I'm sure Castille soap can replace the grated soap? That's what I have on hand.
Yes👍
Your laundry dtergent sounds great!! How long have you been making this? It obviously must be safe for the modern day washers. I love it!
Cheers! 👍🤗
Yes, it's great in my "modern" washer😉 I make such huge batches that it lasts a really long time between making.
Ellen would a basic white melt and pour soap work with this since its similar and has coconut oil?
I've not tried this with MP, I suggest trying a small test batch and see how you like it.
Hello Ellen, This is going to be my first try at a laundry soap. My thinking is to make a 100% coconut oil soap to substitute for the bar soap. Would it follow that I would also use 114 gr of liquid soap then? Looking forward to your response.
I’m not clear on the question?
@@EllenRuthSoap i'd like to replace the grated coconut bar soap with liquid coconut soap. Apologies for the confusion.
@@lizsteyn5662 I'm not sure how a liquid soap would work with the dry powders?? I suggest a very small test batch and see how you like the finish.
Hi again, I just saw your video on how to use citric acid in soaps, have you tried it in this coconut oil recipe?
I have not, but I think it would be a great addition..
Ellen, I love your citrus dish soap, and now this laundry detergent as well. Thank you so much for being so generous with your knowledge. I’m curious, have you ever made dishwasher pods? I’m playing around with a few recipes but so far have not been 100% happy with any of them.
I haven't tried dishwashing tabs yet, but I'm curious to try.
im using washing soda, baking soda, kosher salt and lemon juice.
I am reading that if you add citric acid to the dish soap it takes away the film!
Yes Thank you for All the good Information❤from Germany
I made the detergent and it works well. Can you use this with liquid bleach while washing clothes since it contains the sodium percarbonate? Thanks.
Yes you can👍
This is GREAT!!!! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your recipe with us!!!!
You are so welcome!🌼
Ellen, thank you for sharing this recipe! Question....I have dish bar soap that I've made, not 100% coconut oil, but 95% coconut oil and 5% castor. Still okay to use?
Yes, absolutely👍
@@EllenRuthSoap thank you!!
I love this… this is definitely a must try ❤❤
Hope you enjoy🌼
Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe! I am so happy with the great job it does cleaning our clothes!
You are so welcome!
Made a batch this morning! thank you for sharing.
Thanks!
Yes, you can use that for personal use... If you are marketing or selling your product, you can't use a "name brand" as an ingredient.
For the liquid soap, I think you said that after it sits overnight to congeal, you add water to the top of the jar. Is that correct? I didn’t see you add water so I’m a bit confused. Thank you!
Because my quart jar was pretty full, I didn't add more water, so it was super concentrated.
@EllenRuthSoap so, could a person just turn it all into liquid soap then? Would there be a way of keeping it from getting clumpy? An emulsifier somehow? 🤷♀️
Could I add this to bleach safely to enhance the cleaning power of the bleach . Would it act as a surfactant in the bleach ?
I haven't tried that. I suggest trying a small bit and see how you like it.
Hi Ellen, could you make a liquid version using KOH?
I am researching liquid soaps and formula's👍
I can’t wait to try out your recipe! Ordering my ingredients this morning. Thank you for being so open in sharing your recipes and techniques. You have quickly become my fave channel for relevant information and enjoyable, relaxing to watch content💕
P.S. I’ve been a soap and product maker myself for 35+ years.
Thank you so much🥰
Thank you for this wonderful recipe ! Can this be made without borax and percarbonate?
I find those ingredients important, but you could try a small test batch without them and see how you like it.
Use the recommended % for a soap product.
I believe you'd use 10a of the IFRA for each individual fragrance
Hi Ellen,
Can i use a colloidal silver soap bar? Also do i need to use borax/substitute? I’m thinking of making my own and selling on
I've not made this with a colloidal silver soap, so I can't really speak to that. I suggest making a very small test batch and see how you like it.
Thank you for this inspiring and instructive video! Have you tried this laundry detergent on silk and wool? I read somewhere that washing soda might be to harsh on silk and wool, but maybe it depends on the concentration? I can’t wait to start making this soap and detergent!!! 31:21
I have not tried it on delicates, but that's a good question.
I heard Borax doesn't desolve in cold water very well.
Anyone know about it?
Can I use my lavender soap bar I made for this laundry soap? Do I have to use the sodium p in my laundry soap?
Yes, you can use any soap you like knowing that some have more ingredients in them... You can leave out the percarbonate, but I think it really adds to the cleansing ability.
@@EllenRuthSoap Thank you so much. Hope to see more videos. Sorry you are closing your shop. Family comes first. ❤️🥲
Hello, Ellen. You mentioned the dry detergent would dissolve nicely with warm water. Is this not recommended with cold water? How much is recommended to use per load?
I use 1/8 to 1/4 cup per load depending on how dirty and large the load is. And I do prefer to use the liquid concentrate version for cold water wash.
Ellen I love it!!!
I think I know the answer but just to be sure, the liquid concentrate is in a quart size jar correct?
yes👍
@@EllenRuthSoap thank you Ellen! You are my new favorite teacher.🙂
I definitely loved this video, Ellen!❤️ Thank you very much for sharing so much knowledge.
My mama has serious allergies and she can't use laundry detergent because it's always scented, so this is a great idea to make unscented laundry detergent just for her. I love a good 100% soap, so I am sure it will be fun making this. Thank you, Ellen, God bless you!!🙏🙏🙏 We never stop learning from you ❤️❤️❤️
