The problem is that everything is proprietary and apple spends so much effort to prevent an aftermarket supply. They might as well brick a whole system if you so much as unscrew a screw.
My iphone screen wouldn't turn on no matter what I did so I took it to apple. They said they couldn't fix it and I would have to buy a brand new iphone. I ended up taking it to a repair shop next door and they fixed it for $100 and its still working a year later. Honestly apple sucks for repairs.
11:40 is the sassiest I’ve seen Linus in a long time. I watched it like 4 times. 😂😂 Thanks for the shout! This whole situation is bananas and I hope Right to Repair laws start to put pressure on shady repair practices like this.
I just cancelled my iBook pro order after watching this when I told the store I wanted to cancel after watching this video they refused to cancel the order. I was forced to stop payment on the check.
All those fanboys at “Apple Insider” leaping to the defence of a corporation that doesn’t give a shit about them in the blind hope they get noticed by Sensei Tim Cook is just sad.
@@itstotallynotsai6577 Not cnn, and buzzfeed doesn't really count because they're not necessarily biased, they're just total fucking garbage and low quality.
If you're really quite and you listen carefully, you can hear the faint sounds of a shit storm over at Apple as they try to figure out how Linus got his hands on a new logic board.
Not really, They have serial numbers and if the repair was done correctly you have to flash the board with the serial number of the Mac as well. Used to be a certified repair tech back in 2010. All of these parts are tracked, They more than likely already know the shop or place that got them the board.
It's incredible how many people and Apple-centric news outlets completely miss the point of Linus's complaints. Most of them were claiming that Linus was just trying to use his status to get free repairs when he clearly stated that he was prepared to pay for all of it. That was the main thread going on in the comments on sites like macrumors
No, it's more than that. Look at the Snazzy Labs snafu regarding the garbage vesa mount they sell officially. Ultimately, Apple's policies are detrimental to right to repair laws and overall user serviceability. The fact that they refuse to sell the logic board by itself forces you to use their hardware alone, despite it being able to take any Xeon-WS cpu and easily found RAM modules. Additionally, lets say your stuff is all stock apple parts. Your cpu and ram are still good, but you have to buy it again because Apple says so?
If I'm not mistaken, those "Warranty void if removed" stickers are actually illegal, and have been for a few decades. They only do that because nobody knows about that and its not enforced at all.
This was essentially an Apple Content Cop! And guess what, I have no problem with that! As an Apple user for most of my life (own droids and PCS too) I have been increasingly frustrated with them, especially when it comes down to right to repair and and how Anti-Consumer they are...
+Moirarxos I'm not a grammar nazi, but if you're going to call people low IQ, saying 'you can see everywhere low iq people' makes you look like a great example of the Dunning-Kruger effect.
For the last few years, I've been using Apple products just for work (I used macbooks and ipod touchs personally circa 2009). And I hate it haha. But I kind of need it to build iOS apps and sign them to the app store and whatnot. Unless someone tells me that there is some non-hacky way to do that on Linux/Windows hahaha
Nannin you would want an apple if are working on a product that works only on iOS, like final cut pro, so I can't fault other people here. But yeah, this video shows that you have no security on buying an apple product, and maybe you should try adobe premier pro.
@Dfue77 Every user is bound to break it at one point (especially that vesa adapter), it's just the way Apple handles the problem. They do a terrible job.
Tesla is basically doing that right now. Only certified technicians can work on their cars and there are no spare parts. Every nut and bolt that goes on a Tesla vehicle is meticulously approved by their service department before it leaves a Tesla factory and ends up in the hands of a certified technician. Obviously I’m exaggerating a bit, but it’s still true. TFL backed their model 3 into a wall and it took like two months for them to get it repaired. On any other car, that would have been like 2 days at a body shop for a couple of body panels and a tail light
@@Jaymac720 tbf tesla has been slandered so often by people that they really cant afford to leave anything to chance hell they almost had to sue top gear for slander by literally just driving one of their cars like a grandma and saying it was a bad car. I love apple and their products like their phones are real powerful But their customer service is shit and it’s sad to call their geniuses well.. geniuses
@@dumtree3727 iphones are hard (sometimes impossible) to repair, they have a locked-down OS that doesn't allow you to use your device properly. These two reasons are enough for me personally to never even touch them. They are toys for people who don't mind throwing their money into a trashcan. And I'm writing this from a $1500 laptop that's actually worth $1500, sitting near a $2500 desktop that's actually worth $2500. And I've spent that money not because I believe someone that the products are "good", but because I've actually tried the products beforehand and I know that they make my job and/or life more easy and comfortable. Granted, my phone's worth less than iphone because it's not a working tool but merely a thing to communicate with the internetz when I come out the house without my backpack on, but it's still better than modern iphones in every respect apart from the CPU/GPU (which can't be utilized on modern iphones for anything real because again, the os is locked). Apple scams people in every way possible, fully utilizing the Stockholm syndrome by making you believe that the unserviceable unupgradeable unprofessional shite you bought for 1.5x (or more) the market price is really worth it, it's not just about the customer service.
As a former Apple Specialist & Apple Authorize Repair Center, I can concur all this is true. Apple knows you simply can compete with their lawyers. Apple can and will "kick anyone they desire out of their sandbox!"
It is true that no individual could compete with the lawyers but what about class actions with backing from EFF. The real trick is getting the Repair Centers to work together as a unit instead of going it alone but yes apple's behavior is illegal
I don't understand how anyone can defend or support Apple after this. What an amazing sheep culture I would never let this topic die if I was linus until Apple is buried or changes policy
just look at Donald Trump. The man literally telling Ecuador to not support Breast Feeding policies or trade will cease, claims New York Times is lying, and yet people still defend him. Sheep Culture is Sheep Culture. Folks just chose their shepard and run with it.
yeah this is bad but it doesn't make them a scummy company.. alot of company's are doing this. I've owned a bunch of apple products and ive never had any problems with any of them.. you cant trash a whole company over something like this

buuut it could also be ltt haters and nomatter what there are alwys dilikes on a video even if it is rescuing a puppy or something so comments like these confuse me
@@audreyfinigan4293 ey my guy. Why say something like that. Why not ask apple to be better so you can buy the products you like without being screwed for no reasons.
This is why I've never been interested in becoming Apple certified. Total waste of time and money. You get "authorized" by Apple to become a glorified mail-in repair service and you have to completely restructure your entire business model, from the looks of your store and your employees all the way up to how you actually fix things. Yeah..."authorized repair". I find it completely backwards. You become Apple Authorized so you can get real Apple parts and fix things...but you are penalized and screwed over every single time you try to access that supply chain you just spent a ton of money and time getting access to. Apple doesn't want you to fix their devices. They think even their own technicians are too stupid to work on their stuff. They think their hardware is the second coming of Jesus and they don't want anybody "tarnishing" their (im)perfect image. Lisa Jackson, Apple's VP of "policy and social initiatives" (let's just call her a spokesperson) even said that iPhones are "too complex" to be repaired, going on to say that their products are designed for "durability, not repairability". Yeah, durability! We throttled your phone's CPU because your battery was so bad that it couldn't deal with peak performance requirements. That's durability alright. Apple also stated in court recently that iPhones are only manufactured to be guaranteed to last at least one year. This isn't a company anybody should be supporting. EDIT Also, the bit about the warranty sticker is total insanity. I don't know how many times you have to say it, but sending something for a PAID REPAIR SERVICE is not a warranty! The condition of a warranty sticker SHOULD NOT MATTER for this at all.
Their whole repair system is a massive scam. Everybody who buys Apple products says that you "should have just gotten AppleCare" when you run into a problem. AppleCare functions as a special ticket that grants you access to repair options that should be the standard. Why do I need to have a special ticket to get a reduced price on an out-of-warranty device swap? Also, AppleCare is limited. You are only allowed to file a very small number of incidents before it's no longer valid. To me, that sounds like extortion. Extorting your customers for repair services that should be the de facto standard for what you're selling is wrong. Something that I find strangely ironic about Apple's repair ecosystem is their repair and warranty terms. To make a long story short, Apple dictates everything about how you get your device serviced if you want the warranty to be maintained. You have to bring it to them for screen repairs, you have to bring it to them for battery replacements, etc. But...let's say you drop your iPhone and the screen breaks. Well, at that point, any service conducted by Apple is considered "out-of-warranty repair", because the warranty becomes null and void if the screen is cracked. So, they want to rule everything about how you use the device you paid money for....right up until you actually need to use their services. At that point, they want nothing to do with giving you free service. Now, I'm not saying that Apple should fix broken screens for free. What I'm saying here is why is my warranty in jeopardy at all if I decide to take my phone elsewhere for a screen replacement? The terms are void. The warranty no longer applies to my device. At that point, it should not matter what I do to get it fixed.
Good hell. Some people's kids. I used to work for HP fixing servers, printers, and business desktops/workstations/laptops. We would replace any and every part on any one of those machines. If you think one of these is complicated, tear down a large format printer or a plotter. A full tear down of a laptop for a mobo replacement took me between 30 and 40 minutes. Better yet, I went onsite to the customer to do the repairs. So many reasons in this video to tell Apple to piss off.
I love how Linus stood behind Anthony on this 100% and says *we* just slipped, these things do happen. No blame, no teasing. That's the mark of a good boss. Most people wouldn't be able to resist getting angry, or at least passive-aggressively teasing you. A really bad boss would take it out of your check. I used to work in a shipping warehouse where we shipped everything from seafood and cherries to TV's and military cargo. (Another job I had was a manufacturing warehouse where we made everything from ink for screen printing to plastisol for dildos.... but that's another story) It was the type of company that had a strict uniform policy (even for dockworkers), but made you buy the uniforms. Also the type of company that would deliberately understaff every department to save money, and then blame employees for failing meet impossible deadlines. "Sorry sir, I'll get my time machine fixed right away." They also made you pay for anything you damage (as if they don't have insurance for that). Example: You're a combination dockworker and truck driver, which means you load and deliver your freight. The office brings you paperwork for some shipment that is supposed to be at the airport in 10 minutes. The airport is 10 minutes away, and you still have to locate and load the freight, which could be any number of pallets/pieces. Not to mention you're supposed to do a "pre-trip inspection" of your truck, and you can be held responsible if something goes wrong with the truck so you never feel good about skipping it but you also *never* have time for it. If you happen to break something while rushing your underpaid ass around their understaffed warehouse, you have to pay for it. If it's something really expensive, you pay the deductible for it, which could be up to $1000. That's why I'm self-employed today (I paint houses), and would rather work in a sewer than go back to working anywhere in the shipping industry. My only "employee" is my brother, (and he's more of a partner) but I would never make an employee pay for damaging something. I have a $100,000 insurance policy for that. Even the best employees can make mistakes. You either have faith that they will learn and stand behind them, or you don't. If you don't, you should let them go and find someone new, not keep them around for the next 6 months taking money out of their check. When you also pay like shit, that's a great way to make people feel justified in.... I dunno... stealing a 60" Plasma TV out of your warehouse.
you work near the border right? those assholes think they are working on the other side and they can do what they fucking please, they are a pain in the ass no doubt.
The "genius bar" isn't designed to fix your stuff; it's designed to make you buy new stuff. My Dad brought his phone to an Apple store because it wouldn't charge anymore. Guy waited for SIX hours for a "genius" to even see him. They ran some tests on his phone and told him it was irreparable; it'd be more cost effective to just buy another phone. Thankfully, he didn't buy another phone, he brought his "irreparable" phone to me. My Dad does a lot of woodworking and there was just a lot of junk in the lighting port that needed to be cleaned out. I cleaned it. Phone works great to this day. I still cannot believe that you'd proclaim yourself a "genius" without checking the most RUDIMENTARY of problems. (As a sidenote, if his phone was "irreparable, he at least wanted all the data wiped from it, which they assured him they did. Once I got it back to working condition, we found that it was just as it had been; nothing was wiped. All his credit card and account information was still there. Brilliant.)
OMG what a "de javu" I have "employer owned" Iphone SE that I can use with no limit for 2 years now and couple months back I started having problems with charging like cable had to be pushed to side by small force. It got progressively worse until i just got idea that lightning port might be dirty so i took nail scissors and scratched inside a bit. Almost immediately big clump of fibers came out (in right jeans pocket almost 24/7) Issue solved. To think similar problem was marked as "irreparable" by "professionals" is ludicrous. (btw. it was "chose which iphone you will get" situation)
regularsharp I was repairing an ACER laptop once and pretty much the same thing happened to me it was taken to a professional place it was deemed dead couple years later I power it on with a random power supply 😑
The same thing happened to my iPhone. Luckily my brother worked with fixing and selling phones so he immediately said that it was stuff in the power supply I had to remove. He said it was a common problem on Apple phones. If it is so common why the hell can't Apple employees do the same?
'Warranty void if removed' stickers are illegal and illegitimate. The Federal Trade Commission in the US has warned companies like Apple to stop putting them on their products. If a consumer opens a product and does not actually damage anything, the company is still 100% obligated to honor the warranty. End of story.
Dustin Rodriguez really sweet cuz my gaming consoles i open and blow all the dust out. love the ps2 for that have not been able to open a xbox one like that tho.
That's the theory. Practice is that actually getting whichever company to admit this and behave legally may require significant effort - in some cases actual LEGAL effort, with costing considerations etc. And that's how they end up on the winning end without really trying...
I needed to replace a 1TB SSD in a MacBook Pro... Apple wanted $1,900 CAD for the new part, and an extra $300 if I did not return the failed SSD. Apple is terrible.
Those ‘warranty void if removed’ stickers are illegal according to the Federal Trade Commission. On April 10, the FTC announced that it had sent letters to six companies warning them that their conditional warranty practices violate the 1975 Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which states that no manufacturer is allowed to put restrictions on the repair of a device it offers a warranty on.
Linus: "Hi, I'd like to pay to get this iMac repaired." Apple: "That's not good enough. You have to beg and lick our feet first, and *THEN* maybe I'll consider taking your money."
As a former Certified iOS Technician, I can confirm this. In Puerto Rico the AASP is required to take the device into the shop for 5-7 days while the replacement part gets there and hope it works. If it doesn't, another 5-7 days while the replacement phone gets to the shop. If your screen broke, you had to pay basically full price for a "refurbished" phone because they don't send LCD replacements to Puerto Rico. And no, they wouldn't let us keep replacement parts/devices in stock for quicker service. You wouldn't imagine how many people threaten you over the service's quality. And to make matters worse, there's only one shop in the entire island which is certified to service Apple's products.
As far as I've seen, repair shops here in P.R. either buy damaged phones to scavenge working parts off them or they buy their stock from shady e-bay sellers that get their hands on "counterfeit" parts.
small shops in PR make a killing installing china\ebay screen replacements and keeping the original screens that only the digitizer is cracked for even more profit by reselling later. $$$$
+Danny Rodriguez Yep. You have to be REALLY careful here, and do your research as to whom you take your devices to. Some even swap out parts between customer's devices (I've "worked" at a shop and the owner forgot to order two RAM modules for a customer that was supposed to pick up their iMac that day, so he just took two modules from a working machined that only needed a new Hard Drive). Still, its almost impossible to get original parts here without buying dead devices from locals, so eBay is the best friend for most repair shops here.
"How is it even possible that so many people don't get it?" Me: Thats simple, they're Apple users Edit: Okay guys let's not have a war in the comment thread, it was just a joke.
Anti-TH-camr, more likely. "Ah, that platform that I can make fun of to justify our standard platforms. How can I make sure they look stupid, with or without the truth?"
I don't know about Canada, but in the U.S., "Warranty Void If Removed" stickers are *illegal* and cannot be used to deny you service! You may want to check the Canadian laws. Whatever your equivalent of America's FTC (Federal Trade Commission) would, I'm sure, have a lot to say about this! With that in mind, go buy yourself a new iMac Pro, swap out its motherboard for yours, and then return it as defective. If they won't let you *pay* for the damn repair at a reasonable price, then you have to work the system to make things right.
They just announced that a few months ago, so im not sure if previous work will be eligible. www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/04/11/601582169/warranty-void-if-removed-as-it-turns-out-feds-say-those-warnings-are-illegal
And that's exactly why I think it's valid to have warranty void if removed sticker placed so people like you don't exploit it with dishonest tactics like buying new and swapping the board, I'm not just talking about apple, this applies across the board
The point of not having the warrenty void sticker is so that u dont have to do such under handed tactics. If it wasn't for the same law that covers the warrenty stickers then u would have to take ur car to a dealership anytime it had to be serviced. Warrenty void stickers do the same thing and require OEM replacement at OEM facilities
The fcc statement is due to the 1975 Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Therefore the blow up is not a new change but one that is starting to be semi-enforced as far as I can tell. Although good luck suing the company's without lots of funding.
DONT GIVE ME IDEAS! My boss on this studio build project got one, instead of letting me make a custom system - geez what a POS (Both he AND the Mac - as he kinda neglected to pay) - I considered throwing it from the window, but the only recyclable would be the CPU,even the RAM's proprietary ffs!

I'm so glad you are exposing Apple's despicable business practices!!! Most of its customers are not tech savvy and we need to inform them. Keep up the fight, Linus!
Shinobi Engineer My thoughts, exactly. The only reason Apple's tech is actally being sold at the sky high prices they charge for it, are the less tech savvy consumers who think having an iPhone makes you look cool.
I remember one day when my iphone wasnt turning on i went to the apple store to see if they can help me, a couple people said it was fryed nd nothing could be done to repair it. I went home to google some stuff and they said to hold the home button and power button at the same time and it worked. I just found it hilarious that they didn't even try that
yeah happened to me with my dads MB Air, once it just turned off all of a sudden and didnt turn on, authorized reseller (we dont have any Apple Stores in my country yet, but these guys sell only Apple products so they should know what they are doing, because they dont sell any other brand) said the mother board is fried and they will replace it for 12 000,- (new MB same model/year would cost 21 000,-) so my dad was like "screw it", and bought the newest MB available instead, but i was like nah mate, there is no way, so i did a bit of quick research on google, tried some hard resets etc, nothing worked so i took it to IT department in our advertising agency, they tried the same things i did (i dont know why it didnt work for me tho) and in like 10 minutes the MacBook was up and running. So the point of this story is, IT guys that are fixing internet and servers in freakin advertising agency were able to repair in 10 minutes laptop that was "unrepairable" for authorized Apple techs and they wanted to charge for the non-broken part half the price of new MacBook Air...
Sadly, some people are tricked and buy the new phone anyways. My friend had her iPhone 6s "fry" and she wasn't one to protest, so she bought the 8 right then and there.
THE A BUTTON That sounds a lot like what happened to my old phone. In my case the battery was going bad, so I replaced it with a brand new one. Now it works perfectly fine, but I had to get a new phone anyway because it was 3 years old. The same thing could very well be happening to your ipod. One way I knew it was a battery problem is that it turned on immediately when I put it on charge.
I've had idiot Apple fanboys whose response to the pricing issue was: It costs that much to repair because apple parts are different from "normal" PC parts.
Samsung fixed my note8 after my stupid brother used soap and water to wash off stains on the phone, and when the phone was submerged in water, they replaced everything for free. Plus they replaced the charging entrance that was destroyed due to spilling bond in the pot. This was done by me, but they fixed it for free anyway😭 after that i became a hardcore fan
@@Andy-ko3zt i'm aware that note 8 is IP68, but it does not mean that you can wash the machine with soap and water. No machines are able to endure that.
yes samsung has better service then apple (most companies do) but they just a shitty knock off version that uses cheap parts, they stole their design of apple, apple sued they won the case but the freeaking judge didn’t give them enough money in my opinion. and if you want to prove my wrong let me just say cheap battery = galaxys7 i’m totally for samsung amazing service but thier products suck.
Solution: Don't buy Apple products. I got so fed up with how badly my iPhone 6 tanked I basically vowed to never buy another Apple product ever. I'm also at the point where I'll hardly want to repair one because of their BS warranty and stuff.
StrikerX1360 to be fair from what I've read ios 12 wil decrease the laggyness. Try the beta and see for yourself if the improvement is significant enough
It's easy to say "don't buy apple products" in fact I'm with you, apple and Apple's products sucks, but as a musician I need an apple product beacuse there's lots of apps for musicians that only exist in iOS and that's sucks I'm Stucked to this pieces of garbage to be able to do my work!!
StrikerX1360 same but with a almost 1k ipad I bought and after 6 months no drops or spills the screen started tinting white to the point I couldn't use it....it was also the slowest device I had in my house
This reminds me of when my Xbox 360 broke. I opened it up (breaking the warranty sticker) to see if I could fix it myself. Failed. Called to see if I could get a replacement, I told them over the phone that i'd broken the sticker and opened it up but they accepted to replace it regardless. And they did! that's awesome customer service there.
Apple used to be very intelligently made devices for tech literate people, they used to make it, 'cool to be nerdy.' Oh how companies fall... When Apple thinks different, they think destructive.
@@edu1113 haha, yeah. last update is when my model got cut. I don't miss MacOS as much as I thought. There are certainly some infuriating quirks, but I'm overall happy
I made the switch to PC after about 15 years of owning macs. It's the OS that makes a mac a really great computer for productive tasks, but I'm very happy to notice that Windows finally caught up in a lot of regards. The last straw for me was upgrading the drive and RAM in a 21 inch 2017 iMac: You can't access the ram slots without disassembling the whole thing, and disassembling means un-gluing the screen with some tiny pizza cutter looking apparatus and removing the logic board. A small bit fell off when I removed the logic board and I thought that was the end of it, but it still booted (though I suspect it created some instability with USB devices). I then discovered that the drive configuration with the new SSD was not accepted by Bootcamp and I could no longer install Windows on the thing. ***It should be easy to upgrade basic components in a personal computer, and doing so should not remove functionality or void warranties.*** I'm now the proud owner of a fantastic modern gaming PC I built myself and everything I did on the Mac works flawlessly on it. I have the added bonus of being able to game with very high to ultra settings at over 60 fps! I regret nothing!
Didn't the government say that those warranty stickers are illegal for companies to use them? And they ordered a couple few companies to stop using them or face court?
Yeah they wanted to scare them to provoke change. The stickers themselves aren't illegal, but requiring them for keeping the warranty intact is. In this case however the warranty stickers were used as an excuse to refuse a tradein outside of warranty. So Apple can do what they want, as the tradein would have been a voluntary service outside consumer law.
Dominic, that's only for the US, and even then, Linus would, or at least should, have had an easier time of getting it repaired in the US. The recent FTC ruling was actually a warning to various companies saying that the trade commission isn't afraid to bring the big guns with the Magnusson Moss Warranty Act, the details of which basically are warranties cannot be voided or canceled because some stickers are broken, or it was taken to a third party repair center. Unless an attempted repair broke the machine further, the warranty stands.
I’ve loved Apple for years, in a large part due to their great after-the-sale customer service and repair. (They did me well with several iMacs and even a G4 Cube). After watching this video, it’s clear that the Apple I knew no longer exists. (And after a recent bad repair experience with a MacBook Pro, I can believe it)
Linus and crew you have really out done yourselves for this video. It's truly shocking how apple treats it's consumers and it's business partners. Looking forward to part 3!
What business partners? Apple doesn't sponsor anyone aside from a few select news sites (i.e. The Verge), celebrities/TH-camrs (like MKBHD) or notable people like (formerly) Walt Mossberg for review purposes only. Everyone else are garbage to them. You really think Apple cares about some PC-centric CANADIAN TH-camr named LTT talking about Apple products in a positive or negative perspective? Not only that, but from a PR perspective, Apple's Prosumer market is negligible to their brand/reputation that it affect sales.
Saad Syed sorry I meant their own employees not being able to assist consumers . Plus the apple doesn't make every component within their products, for example Samsung supplies some components for the iPhone's but Apple claims it as their own. And you know What, no one likes a keyboard worrier, so plz next time keep to yourself
Naveen C. I spent roughly 3 days researching a 3 in 1 machine for school and finally went with one (a Lenovo) that is really great quality and is still working great after about 4 years, it was even a refurbished model. But yes, I had automatically crossed off Apple from the list. Great machines are out there and available! My Lenovo is basically the same as the macbook, Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro.
Sam A sure that might happen, but so should they sue hackintosh builders for using mac os on a non-mac system which is against the terms of use, but nothing like that happened (yet) or it's really well hidden from public... not to get confused, i strongly disagree with current Apple's mindset
I5ZQ8 recently yes. though try explaining that to a genius bar. That's the beauty of our glorious legal system, if you are big enough you can avoid being responsible
Me to. I love his Apple rants and I don't even have a good compete anymore. I hate windows 10 which I have now coz I hate Apple to and mine is now to old to jog along anymore.
Sure it can (barely) just not effectively at the moment because there is so much regulation against the consumer themselves with the current policies. They are not getting rid of it, they are going to reform it so that companies can't lock you up into litigation and wait you out. We have the same problem here in Canada. It's a write off policy that gets companies out of hot water fast. If somethings wrong they just swap it out and continue what they are doing without question or resistance.
CanadaBud23 the Trump admin has no interest in actually protecting consumers. Mick Mulvaney, the head of the CFPB, has dropped investigations into payday loan lenders (which I’m sure you know are terrible scammers) and his pick at the FCC, Ajit Pai, has gotten rid of Net Neutrality against the interests of consumers and in the interest of monopolistic ISPs.

It's incredible how many people and Apple-centric news outlets completely miss the point of Linus's complaints.

EDIT
Also, the bit about the warranty sticker is total insanity. I don't know how many times you have to say it, but sending something for a PAID REPAIR SERVICE is not a warranty! The condition of a warranty sticker SHOULD NOT MATTER for this at all.
spartan456 right on!
How the hell is this not the top comment?!
Make that Apple certified "slave"
Warrenty stickers are illegal in the US

Agreed BlastMode7, a normal laptop teardown and almost any part replacement is easier than making an excellent spaghetti sauce!
I read the part where you say your business as "I paint horses" 🤣🤣🤣

Brilliant.)

Honestly, I could call myself an Apple fanboy but this is just outright outrageous repairing your device is a right, not a privilege
Marc Maceira god dayum! Can't even imagine being the only one whom is doing the repairs for Apple products with this kind of behavoiur
I live in PR. So is this why Apple product repair here in PR tends to be a bit .... skeptical?
As far as I've seen, repair shops here in P.R. either buy damaged phones to scavenge working parts off them or they buy their stock from shady e-bay sellers that get their hands on "counterfeit" parts.
small shops in PR make a killing installing china\ebay screen replacements and keeping the original screens that only the digitizer is cracked for even more profit by reselling later. $$$$

Yep.

LMacNeill well time to sue my local tech store

David Weinberg Excellent comment! At some point money (& power) spoiled those best minds.
But where's the fun in hacking if there aren't people out there to stop you. They were just hacking to dick around and have fun not maliciously. Also if Apple makes an impenetrable iPhone and someone hacks into it, then 1) bragging rights and 2) they can charge stupid money!!

So the point of this story is, IT guys that are fixing internet and servers in freakin advertising agency were able to repair in 10 minutes laptop that was "unrepairable" for authorized Apple techs and they wanted to charge for the non-broken part half the price of new MacBook Air...
i have an ipod and it restarts like that all the time if it has lower then 20%
Sadly, some people are tricked and buy the new phone anyways.

I made the switch to PC after about 15 years of owning macs. It's the OS that makes a mac a really great computer for productive tasks, but I'm very happy to notice that Windows finally caught up in a lot of regards. The last straw for me was upgrading the drive and RAM in a 21 inch 2017 iMac:
You can't access the ram slots without disassembling the whole thing, and disassembling means un-gluing the screen with some tiny pizza cutter looking apparatus and removing the logic board. A small bit fell off when I removed the logic board and I thought that was the end of it, but it still booted (though I suspect it created some instability with USB devices). I then discovered that the drive configuration with the new SSD was not accepted by Bootcamp and I could no longer install Windows on the thing.
***It should be easy to upgrade basic components in a personal computer, and doing so should not remove functionality or void warranties.***
I'm now the proud owner of a fantastic modern gaming PC I built myself and everything I did on the Mac works flawlessly on it.
So Apple can do what they want, as the tradein would have been a voluntary service outside consumer law.
unfortunately that's in the states. Canada is not safe in that respect.

Apple needs to be investigated by the consumer protection agency
Karl P HAHAHA Trump has gutted that agency. It can’t investigate banks, insurance companies or Wall Street anymore, let alone Apple!
Or just have the entire company sued out of existence? Or bombed?
