I have a P2 Model 1997 Zx7r 750cc Kawasaki Ninja Motorcycle. I want to put my helmet design onto surface of the fairings kit. What thin line masking tape am to use, and can I use packet size ground aluminum metal flakes poured into my paint mixed really well and then spray it out of my gravity feed spray gun ? I am using both a digital air regulator which needs to be calibrated. Purchased from harbor freight along with air line filter that way it can catch any water oil etc from line when in use...also purchased from harbor freight. And is the air regulator to be between the 25psi to 30psi range ? Or your saying set my regulator at either 25psi or at 30psi ?
I want to do an experiment with use of some house paint just to see if the paint which is normally used to paint home walls ....can be thinned to be painted onto other surfaces like fenders doors quarter panels trunks and hoods of cars. And if it can be how would person go about mixing process given its house paint an not your conventional automotive paints ? Thank you.

My great great grandfather started this process and it has been passed along every generation, I was brought up by my dad with this door helping him sand every day. We reached step 3 today, but no time for celebration, we must sand more. My life is just that...that door... there is no end... For the love of God send help, please.

When you are done you can see the reflection of a penny in your new paint job, because that's all you'll have left. But seriously, now I understand why a nice paint job cost so much.
Been following this guide for the past 4 months while I fully restore my 240sx. I'm at the wet sanding stage for my clear coat. For everyone saying there is too much sanding, its really not that bad. Took about 14 hours to block the entire car to prep for base and my god did this ever turn out spectacular. Thanks Eastwood!

When you're the one that shoots the clear you have a good idea on how many mills to cut off..you can also use a mill gauge to check your work as you go,
I love to see people take the time and use their craftsmanship in a way to achieve beyond believable results. I purchased my 2002 Ford F150 lightning with 4000 miles on it under the assumption that that he had never been wrecked before I was wrong, it was beat the pieces, including the roof that I found out many years down the road. . I would be honored to have someone like you finally fix it and take it back to the original shape. My health is dwindling fast and I’m gonna give it to my daughter because she loves anything low bad and fast and she spent 11 hours and 500 miles every other weekend in it back-and-forth to pick her up for 14 years in my truck. She loves it and she will be heartbroken to know that it has been wrecked and I spent all this you’re trying to take care of it as best as I could. Now at 280,000 of miles road rash from the interstate I went through and replaced everything moving underneath it as far as all the suspension wise goes but the paint is rough. I’m gonna try to repaint it and do the best I can by watching your videos over and over and over. It’s nice to see somebody take their time and do things the right way. you really dont need to do all this for diy just put some bondo and sand down , primer, paint your base coat and if you want to be super fancy add some clear after
Eric Rojasvelez it’s seems that way but really when your doing 2 fenders and a hood and doors all together it doesn’t seem like it a lot of work just for a door like in the video. Because it’s all in steps it kinda just gets done over a summer or whateva’s. Like you only have to block sand till it’s straight. Or till your happy with it. Then that part is done. And so on. Step by step.
Here I am worried about a piece of dust in the air, feeling like I didn't do all 4 steps exactly as long as he did, but I don't have any wild animals walking in my paint job! 😂
To all the people asking why do this at home instead of paying a professional, you basically get to say, yeah I did all of this myself. And then you can just keep doing it. Change the colors every other year. Eventually you’ll do great. It can be fun and it’s just a project. That’s all it is, doing it yourself is for people who are looking for a project, not looking to save money, just a fun project.
I'm doing it on a bicycle. Much cheaper project, but just a personal hobby/project as you accurately described. Smaller scale allows me to go all out with an exotic color scheme, i.e., real candy apple. Cheers!

@@vitaminb4869 True. I was 18 in '69 and just learning. In 1970 I put down clear coat on a 1963 Galaxie Fastback in candy apple red. People thought I was nuts. But that paint had depth.
First off, this is a great detailed video. Wonderfully done. Secondly… I typically feel overly confident after watching TH-cam videos, this video is no different. I am very confident I will pay a professional to paint my truck!
I've still decided to do it myself. I reckon I can do this to the hood of my car in three to four, 8-12 hour days. It wont take you a whole day to sand one door bro. It will take like an hour lol

This is a no half stepping, no gitting around job. This is for a professional job. I got tired just by looking at all those steps to go by. I will say like I was taught when your shoe breaks down take it to the shoe repair shop. Now in days you replace them if you got the money. Outstanding proyect I did learn alot.
Today we paint a car door in 4 east steps. Each step has 52 divisions, each division has 13 parts. This 24 minute video was shot in only 3 years. LOL. All kidding aside, beautiful work.
If I painted cars for a living, I would have potential customers watch this right before I gave them their estimate.

The value of artisan level work is so often forgotten. I recall seeing a new Cadillac product in the 1990s, a Catera, that had the texture of a tangerine. The auto industry has since made improvements.
Because, they make science from painting a car to make you discouraging! But, i the reality, you can do better then that! Don't give up, ever! Spand some money for paint and gun, get some hud from old car and learn!!! Every man with the brain can do that! Believe me!
you can do it... just take your time.... paint jobs are more about prep work. and as far as all these steps, depending on how nice you lay down the paint, you wont have to cut and buff it..... if you look at the paint jobs on my channel i think i only buffed 1 fender and a van... the honda i just finished wasnt buffed at all... so no need to be discouraged

I'm a classic car guy for years but...by the time this is done to a hobby car you will have missed your kids entire childhood and they Will all be adults and moved out by the time you finish
I think after a few videos I am doubting even re doing my scratched up bumper, too many variables that could go wrong, not even sure I could apply the body filler correctly on the scratches holy, or have enough time to do allllll the sanding.
T Willingham you’ve got to be dedicated to the job. Like I am. I am 48 and I have already finished the sanding it only took about 3 days long hrs but I got it done.
Wow, Amazing! I have a Binks model 7 since 1984, loaned it out years ago and it was returned seized up. Kept it and just decided to refurbish it. Also bought four other model 7's, a Binks 2100, a Binks 115 touch up and a new gravity Spectrum. I refurbish furniture and make them look new again. Painted a car once in 1989 and I guess I'm going to paint my wife's Mazda3, 2009. Great video.

Since the time of my comment, I've consulted with other paint/body professionals as needed for specific points of advice. Their information as been consistent: a good paint job is easily many months of hard work. Whether the work is done inside or outside, the general steps in this video are the same. The only thing different here is that the professional instructs you to spray more than is typically necessary, giving you the ability to remove more as needed to eliminate contamination during the sanding phases. He's also demonstrating how to do it from bare metal. My truck is an heirloom vehicle, my most prized possession handed down to me from my father. After its involvement in an accident last year, I wanted to restore it better than a typical collision repair shop. The only way to do that was to do it myself, and I knew I had my work cut out for me. My father raised me on values of hard work and integrity, so it was indeed my honor to apply all of that to the effort of restoring his truck. This video helped me to wrap my head around a job I'd never done before.
@@porterdor39 It took me about 7 months. Granted, much of that time was spent fixing a botched first attempt. But in the end, I was very satisfied with my results. No regrets!
I followed this process but with local products because Im in Australia, but the detailed and easy to follow steps made the job easy. Im now up to the clear for my AE86 hood and its been a great guiding hand. Thanks Eastwood 👍
Love all these comments about how long this takes, too many steps, blah blah blah. This is what it takes to paint something the right way, and once you start getting higher end cars in your shop, this is how all of them are done at a high level. It does take a lot of work, a lot of consumables, a lot of time. But that's what a truly high quality paint job looks like. I think the point of this video was to show a high quality paint job being done at home, outside, etc. The supplies needed do cost money, but there is no way around that. Excellent video with just enough info, not over complicated, and it shows a great result. Thank you Eastwood
I hate how there’s so many negative people about this video! One method does not work for all people, there’s so many people who say you don’t need to do this, you don’t need to do that. Goes to show that those people are lazy at work and take shortcuts. Personally I like this video and think this would be great for me since I’m a DIYer and the results he got were amazing. I’d rather use these steps and get great results then to listen to these people who have been doing it for a “long time” and get shitty results because I skipped steps. Also for the people bitching “by the time I get done painting my $1K car I could of just bought a new one. Then don’t paint your POS car, this is for people who want to restore or paint their expensive vehicles that are $10,000 and up. I’ve got a lot of paint repairs that need to be done on my truck and it cost $22K, I use it for work but when I’m not working I use it to cruise around and I want that thing to look nice whether it’s for work or not. As helpful as this video is for a beginner you failed to mention things like how to identify high and low spots, what to look for and how to know how much to sand down to when taking off the filler. The best way to do these videos is to have an experienced person demonstrating but also a inexperienced person asking questions so you know what we don't. Thanks for the demonstration.
This is just superb, I have been researching "diy auto painting equipment" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Banayce Wordless Blueprint - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a smashing one of a kind product for discovering how to master car body work and spraying techniques minus the headache. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my buddy got excellent success with it.
Painting a complete car in an atmosphere with dust, that requires sanding and polishing at every stage is little short of crazy, If you paint the main body panel by panel, just look at the time factor of masking the 10 or so areas twice. Then sanding without nicking the adjacent already painted panel. Bug footprints.!!!!!!!! What about when you go inside to clean up and return to find cat pawprints all over your work and the cat asleep on the middle of the newly painted panel. Suggestion. Stack the shelves at the supermarket for a month and use the money to pay a competent company who own a professional spray booth. A compressor alone will cost $500 minimum and having it anywhere near the job, it will blow clouds of dust all over your tack ragged panel the moment that the motor cuts in. Also. sanding dust on the masked areas of the car will blow everywhere once you start spraying.

This is excellent video. It clearly show all the effort You need to put into spraying a panel. That for US in trade is awesome, I have been doing this for many years and I consider myself a top-tier expert. For me, as much as I hate when people try to do something like this themselves, I truly like this video :D I need to do it all over again after reaping all the stuff they put on it, to do it properly. It is an honest guide how to do it yourself, and after you are not happy bring it to us, it just shows you where is your money going. These days people don't want to pay as much - especially here in London, you still get good money but they come from poorer countries where standards are much lower (quite often - not always) and jobs cheaper and after they wonder why panel is for example 250 GBP. That video shows you just bits of the steps - lets say you have door panel just like the one above; - take off the door (or leave it on but you will have more masking etc), that takes about 20 minutes. - wash the panel and dry it, or wash the car and dry it, another 10-20min, - repair the panel, anything from 20min to 5h and up, - prepare the panel for priming, sand the area around the repair with orbital 320, heavier over 180 random orbital marks from area just over the filler progressing to 500 random orbital sander further away from repair for blending, - mask the panel all round using special techniques for fading preferably as it avoids primer burn and sinking marks after baking, - prime the panel in closed space - not outside as its overspray - the cloud of airborne paint travels good several seconds with the wind or velocity from gun, the overspray sticks to everything, you will have it on neighbours car from 10m away if not lucky and that is few hundred dollars to fix ( house windows, your own car - for that if panel left on car you need to mask entire car preferably all the way to ground including roof - preferably soft masking film) - whole process - of the car 20min, on the car 20min + another 10 for the car - if windy another 10 for securing sheet, - LET PANEL DRY - 25 Celsius - about 4-5h in the sun for light coat - preferably a day for heavier coat or more if many layers of previous repairs blended underneath, or bake it in an oven - like the big one made for cars - after air drying and flashing off complitelly (minimum after 20min) - or the heater instead of oven, in other words it needs to dry properly and be fully cured as it will act normal but after a month or so it will sink - and that is guaranteed if not fully off, - wet block primer and wet sand the rest of panel - can dry block it first if entire panel done - 320 for whole panel, after that dry, guide coat, 800, 1200, 1500 done, reason why not to dry sand spot repairs is that dry sanding is far less equal to wet (as wet with soap sticks evenly to panel) and less efficient and 320 can produce deeper marks plus 320 marks in lacquer will be very difficult to remove with wet sanding and will probably occur in panel curve defects visible under sun and since both primer and clear that primer is blended onto have different hardness, sanding it dry is done only by professionals who want to step down primer and are capable of not fuking it up :), wet sand the rest of panel progressing up to 1500 and not breaking anywhere as the paint wants to be blended, anything from 1 hour up to 2-3 depends on quality level, - apply base coat - spray it on - all the prepping like drying, degreasing, tack raging whole panel, all done in the booth for quality and no defects in paint, about 10-25 minutes, - apply clear, - 30min up to an hour. - dry for half an hour and bake, baking paint is essential, there are no paints, does not matter how expensive they are, that will be fully cured in 25 degrees in 2 days, I mean end effect will look good but it will eventually sink a tiny bit, it is chemical unavoidable process, baking saves weeks of waiting and minimises sinkage, it is always best to polish panel after a week or so anyway if it is a respray, most customers will never see the difference anyway but honest garages do care, so drying takes lets say after baking you leave it and polish it next day, - polishing takes from 30 minutes on spotless finish up to an hour on slightly dirty topcoat, - put the panel on the car and wash everything with car wash stuff - 40 minutes. Ok so it looks like 3 day job - and it usually is, plus the times above are valid ONLY if you do it all perfect on first try, you cannot break thru any layer after priming, you absolutely cannot break thru the edges as it will result in painting panel next to it - yes, you need space on perfectly wet sanded 1500 panel with repair far from edges to be able to blend it - if you brake on edge (there are ways to fix those mistakes but those are professional grade) you will need to paint another entire panel... Yes. Another point, silicons, SILICON, craters, eyes, runs, pin holes, those are very common problems hard to avoid if you are not doing it everyday. Anyways point is - for those 150-250 dollars you will need to spend, you gonna end up spending half of that in materials (as you are not buying in bulk for company) and you will end up with crappy job in 97.5% cases - in 3 days time - or 5 if you don't have oven and you do care about the panel you are doing :) Plus lets be honest that video above have visible defects, shape, sand marks etc, it is all visible in final shots after polishing like in 23:40 just around the handle, shape overall is wanky and wobbly. As technician in the video is definitely capable of making this door spotless - for the sake of youtube video, it just shows you that "only" little effort is needed. PS. Good job guys at Eastwood! But it does strike me as an attempt to get people to just buy and waste your products - innit? :P

But!!! have to admit the fuel filler flap does look beautiful.

I ran out of the guide coat a few decades into my project, it was pretty devastating for me and my family because it had financially ruined us and we were only up to stage 2.
I just painted a car little over a month ago. Turns out it’s easy. I used 2 stage and came out like it was dipped like glass. The real skill is in the prep.
I wanted to paint my car for fun, after seeing this video, i realized that age 30, i will not live enough to finish the car, maybe my kids will finish it.
only if the beginner has a very very strong tendency towards masochism, like jesus christ. Also I still have no clue how much to sand down from that filler, when to stop and what those low/high actually do (i get that they make the paint rough) but why do i need to do every step 100 times. when do i stop? did he ever stop fucking sanding that goddamn door. honestly I'll probably try to still prep my car but I'll have a painter m8 of mine tell me what to do and check every once in a while. This video was utter overkill and I have a strong feeling that you need like a third of the materials used here to complete what he did
@@1nf32n0 You are right, some of this is completely over kill. Look into wet sanding with a DA sander (if you have a compressor) it will save you a lot of wasted time that he was doing on a flat surface. Block sanding is just for finding your highs and lows. Once you get into the wet sanding phase, you are basically prepping for paint the paint. You need to do this every time you want to apply paint so the paint has something to grab onto otherwise you could risk having paint runs when you are applying your coats (which is fine you will just have to sand them down). As far as knowing when to stop, i use my hands to feel the grit difference and once the whole panel has the same consistency, then i know its time to move up to the next grit. Go to a junk yard and buy a door off of them and practice on that. that way you dont have to worry about making mistakes. Its an art form and the best way to learn an art (for me at least) is to just do it and fuck something up that you dont care about and learn from the mistakes.

When he suggested starting with bare metal i knew i was in for a ride but damn. Lol i thought this would be a scuff and shoot type of video. Not a concours level job. Lol
This video inspired me to paint my truck. Now I had no garage to do this in, but I did have a carport. 4 poles holding up a roof so I thot what the heck. I taped up 3.5 mil plastic walls from the roof and anchored the bottoms down with semi heavy objects. Two days after I set paint booth lol, a storm come thru with strong winds but I was able to keep booth in tact that night and next day. But wind from the storm changed weather causing wind to blow 18 to 25 mph finally taking half my booth down. Long story short, im going on almost 2 months its taken me to paint my truck basicaly in the open, and one month of time out of that was dedicated to my home made paint booth lol. Its time to color sand it then buff it and see how it comes out. I THINK FOR WHAT ITS BEEN THRU, YOUR NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO TELL!

I'm 67 years old. I'll be 68 in May of 2023. If I intend on trying to paint a 1968 Buick Wildcat, using the meticulous methods shown in this video, can I finish the car before my shoulders give out or I pass away? I would love to do exactly what this guy did in this video. And, have a beautiful paint job on the Wildcat, that anyone who sees it will be enamored by my skills and professional looking job. However, I am afraid of running out of stamina and the will power to see the job to completion. I took a paint thickness measurement on this car and found some areas, like the hood, measured as thick as 22 mils. Just sanding the car down to bare sheet metal would probably take a few weeks, considering I can only stay on task four to five hours a couple of days a week. This video gave me inspiration, knowledge, and hope, yet I couldn't help but feel some despair that it might be a bit overwhelming for me. Great Video, using great products from Eastwood.
The money is good, but you do that kind of work, in a stressful enviroment, of bosses demanding more, more faster faster we need more cars out, that job has to go out today!! Etc etc its bullshit, forced to rush your ass off, and if as a result the job not coming out good, you treated like an asshole, its not worth the money, I'm training to be nurse now
The other way is to work for yourself, even if you are doing it on the side, aside from the main job. If the side job turns out to be successful, as good as the main job or better, its time to consider quitting the main job and make body the switch to doing bodywork as primary work. For someone that works part time, both the main job and side job could be done. Make no mistake that body work pays well, if you got decent skills or better.
well no a rolls (only luxury cars that can really spec out to that price range) paint job is gonna be on the same scale, "glossyness" (if that's a word) is more about the actual paint used, if you want a rolls that will shine like this they will be more than happy to accommodate. 2million dollar luxury cars are on a scale of themselves everything is done by hand by extremely talented craftsmen.
I watched this 20 times then I painted my truck. Took me one year and came out great. Didn't follow these steps exactly but it gives a good general idea. You will find everyone does things a bit different so you have a general idea then pick your plan. But yeah... you will be sanding alot!

I want to do an experiment with use of some house paint just to see if the paint which is normally used to paint home walls ....can be thinned to be painted onto other surfaces like fenders doors quarter panels trunks and hoods of cars. And if it can be how would person go about mixing process given its house paint an not your conventional automotive paints ? Thank you.

Been following this guide for the past 4 months while I fully restore my 240sx. I'm at the wet sanding stage for my clear coat. For everyone saying there is too much sanding, its really not that bad. Took about 14 hours to block the entire car to prep for base and my god did this ever turn out spectacular. Thanks Eastwood!

When you're the one that shoots the clear you have a good idea on how many mills to cut off..you can also use a mill gauge to check your work as you go,

I purchased my 2002 Ford F150 lightning with 4000 miles on it under the assumption that that he had never been wrecked before I was wrong, it was beat the pieces, including the roof that I found out many years down the road. . I would be honored to have someone like you finally fix it and take it back to the original shape. My health is dwindling fast and I’m gonna give it to my daughter because she loves anything low bad and fast and she spent 11 hours and 500 miles every other weekend in it back-and-forth to pick her up for 14 years in my truck. She loves it and she will be heartbroken to know that it has been wrecked and I spent all this you’re trying to take care of it as best as I could. Now at 280,000 of miles road rash from the interstate I went through and replaced everything moving underneath it as far as all the suspension wise goes but the paint is rough. I’m gonna try to repaint it and do the best I can by watching your videos over and over and over. It’s nice to see somebody take their time and do things the right way. Eric Rojasvelez it’s seems that way but really when your doing 2 fenders and a hood and doors all together it doesn’t seem like it a lot of work just for a door like in the video. Because it’s all in steps it kinda just gets done over a summer or whateva’s. Like you only have to block sand till it’s straight. Or till your happy with it. Then that part is done. And so on. Step by step.

To all the people asking why do this at home instead of paying a professional, you basically get to say, yeah I did all of this myself. And then you can just keep doing it. Change the colors every other year. Eventually you’ll do great. It can be fun and it’s just a project. That’s all it is, doing it yourself is for people who are looking for a project, not looking to save money, just a fun project.

I will say like I was taught when your shoe breaks down take it to the shoe repair shop. Now in days you replace them if you got the money. Outstanding proyect I did learn alot.
Today we paint a car door in 4 east steps. Each step has 52 divisions, each division has 13 parts. This 24 minute video was shot in only 3 years. LOL. All kidding aside, beautiful work.

I think after a few videos I am doubting even re doing my scratched up bumper, too many variables that could go wrong, not even sure I could apply the body filler correctly on the scratches holy, or have enough time to do allllll the sanding.

Wow, Amazing! I have a Binks model 7 since 1984, loaned it out years ago and it was returned seized up. Kept it and just decided to refurbish it. Also bought four other model 7's, a Binks 2100, a Binks 115 touch up and a new gravity Spectrum. I refurbish furniture and make them look new again. Painted a car once in 1989 and I guess I'm going to paint my wife's Mazda3, 2009. Great video.

Since the time of my comment, I've consulted with other paint/body professionals as needed for specific points of advice. Their information as been consistent: a good paint job is easily many months of hard work.
Whether the work is done inside or outside, the general steps in this video are the same. The only thing different here is that the professional instructs you to spray more than is typically necessary, giving you the ability to remove more as needed to eliminate contamination during the sanding phases. He's also demonstrating how to do it from bare metal.
My truck is an heirloom vehicle, my most prized possession handed down to me from my father. After its involvement in an accident last year, I wanted to restore it better than a typical collision repair shop. The only way to do that was to do it myself, and I knew I had my work cut out for me. My father raised me on values of hard work and integrity, so it was indeed my honor to apply all of that to the effort of restoring his truck. This video helped me to wrap my head around a job I'd never done before.

Love all these comments about how long this takes, too many steps, blah blah blah. This is what it takes to paint something the right way, and once you start getting higher end cars in your shop, this is how all of them are done at a high level. It does take a lot of work, a lot of consumables, a lot of time. But that's what a truly high quality paint job looks like. I think the point of this video was to show a high quality paint job being done at home, outside, etc. The supplies needed do cost money, but there is no way around that. I hate how there’s so many negative people about this video! One method does not work for all people, there’s so many people who say you don’t need to do this, you don’t need to do that. Goes to show that those people are lazy at work and take shortcuts. Personally I like this video and think this would be great for me since I’m a DIYer and the results he got were amazing. I’d rather use these steps and get great results then to listen to these people who have been doing it for a “long time” and get shitty results because I skipped steps. Also for the people bitching “by the time I get done painting my $1K car I could of just bought a new one. Then don’t paint your POS car, this is for people who want to restore or paint their expensive vehicles that are $10,000 and up. I’ve got a lot of paint repairs that need to be done on my truck and it cost $22K, I use it for work but when I’m not working I use it to cruise around and I want that thing to look nice whether it’s for work or not. I aim to refurbish vintage sewing machines and figured I might as well figure out the steps for painting them too, since many of the machines of the 1950s and 60s look like cars. Thanks for helping me now understand how much freaking sanding is involved! Respect and gratitude.
As helpful as this video is for a beginner you failed to mention things like how to identify high and low spots, what to look for and how to know how much to sand down to when taking off the filler.
The best way to do these videos is to have an experienced person demonstrating but also a inexperienced person asking questions so you know what we don't.

This is just superb, I have been researching "diy auto painting equipment" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Banayce Wordless Blueprint - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a smashing one of a kind product for discovering how to master car body work and spraying techniques minus the headache. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my buddy got excellent success with it.

Painting a complete car in an atmosphere with dust, that requires sanding and polishing at every stage is little short of crazy, If you paint the main body panel by panel, just look at the time factor of masking the 10 or so areas twice. Then sanding without nicking the adjacent already painted panel.
Bug footprints.!!!!!!!! What about when you go inside to clean up and return to find cat pawprints all over your work and the cat asleep on the middle of the newly painted panel.
Suggestion. Stack the shelves at the supermarket for a month and use the money to pay a competent company who own a professional spray booth.
A compressor alone will cost $500 minimum and having it anywhere near the job, it will blow clouds of dust all over your tack ragged panel the moment that the motor cuts in.
Also. sanding dust on the masked areas of the car will blow everywhere once you start spraying.
I came here with some confidence. Now I have zero confidence

This is excellent video. It clearly show all the effort You need to put into spraying a panel. That for US in trade is awesome, I have been doing this for many years and I consider myself a top-tier expert. For me, as much as I hate when people try to do something like this themselves, I truly like this video :D I need to do it all over again after reaping all the stuff they put on it, to do it properly. It is an honest guide how to do it yourself, and after you are not happy bring it to us, it just shows you where is your money going. These days people don't want to pay as much - especially here in London, you still get good money but they come from poorer countries where standards are much lower (quite often - not always) and jobs cheaper and after they wonder why panel is for example 250 GBP.
That video shows you just bits of the steps - lets say you have door panel just like the one above;
- take off the door (or leave it on but you will have more masking etc), that takes about 20 minutes.
- wash the panel and dry it, or wash the car and dry it, another 10-20min,
- repair the panel, anything from 20min to 5h and up,
- prepare the panel for priming, sand the area around the repair with orbital 320, heavier over 180 random orbital marks from area just over the filler progressing to 500 random orbital sander further away from repair for blending,
- mask the panel all round using special techniques for fading preferably as it avoids primer burn and sinking marks after baking,
- prime the panel in closed space - not outside as its overspray - the cloud of airborne paint travels good several seconds with the wind or velocity from gun, the overspray sticks to everything, you will have it on neighbours car from 10m away if not lucky and that is few hundred dollars to fix ( house windows, your own car - for that if panel left on car you need to mask entire car preferably all the way to ground including roof - preferably soft masking film) - whole process - of the car 20min, on the car 20min + another 10 for the car - if windy another 10 for securing sheet,
- LET PANEL DRY - 25 Celsius - about 4-5h in the sun for light coat - preferably a day for heavier coat or more if many layers of previous repairs blended underneath, or bake it in an oven - like the big one made for cars - after air drying and flashing off complitelly (minimum after 20min) - or the heater instead of oven, in other words it needs to dry properly and be fully cured as it will act normal but after a month or so it will sink - and that is guaranteed if not fully off,
- wet block primer and wet sand the rest of panel - can dry block it first if entire panel done - 320 for whole panel, after that dry, guide coat, 800, 1200, 1500 done, reason why not to dry sand spot repairs is that dry sanding is far less equal to wet (as wet with soap sticks evenly to panel) and less efficient and 320 can produce deeper marks plus 320 marks in lacquer will be very difficult to remove with wet sanding and will probably occur in panel curve defects visible under sun and since both primer and clear that primer is blended onto have different hardness, sanding it dry is done only by professionals who want to step down primer and are capable of not fuking it up :), wet sand the rest of panel progressing up to 1500 and not breaking anywhere as the paint wants to be blended, anything from 1 hour up to 2-3 depends on quality level,
- apply base coat - spray it on - all the prepping like drying, degreasing, tack raging whole panel, all done in the booth for quality and no defects in paint, about 10-25 minutes,
- apply clear, - 30min up to an hour.
- dry for half an hour and bake, baking paint is essential, there are no paints, does not matter how expensive they are, that will be fully cured in 25 degrees in 2 days, I mean end effect will look good but it will eventually sink a tiny bit, it is chemical unavoidable process, baking saves weeks of waiting and minimises sinkage, it is always best to polish panel after a week or so anyway if it is a respray, most customers will never see the difference anyway but honest garages do care, so drying takes lets say after baking you leave it and polish it next day,
- polishing takes from 30 minutes on spotless finish up to an hour on slightly dirty topcoat,
- put the panel on the car and wash everything with car wash stuff - 40 minutes.
Ok so it looks like 3 day job - and it usually is, plus the times above are valid ONLY if you do it all perfect on first try, you cannot break thru any layer after priming, you absolutely cannot break thru the edges as it will result in painting panel next to it - yes, you need space on perfectly wet sanded 1500 panel with repair far from edges to be able to blend it - if you brake on edge (there are ways to fix those mistakes but those are professional grade) you will need to paint another entire panel... Yes.
Another point, silicons, SILICON, craters, eyes, runs, pin holes, those are very common problems hard to avoid if you are not doing it everyday.
Anyways point is - for those 150-250 dollars you will need to spend, you gonna end up spending half of that in materials (as you are not buying in bulk for company) and you will end up with crappy job in 97.5% cases - in 3 days time - or 5 if you don't have oven and you do care about the panel you are doing :)
Plus lets be honest that video above have visible defects, shape, sand marks etc, it is all visible in final shots after polishing like in 23:40 just around the handle, shape overall is wanky and wobbly. As technician in the video is definitely capable of making this door spotless - for the sake of youtube video, it just shows you that "only" little effort is needed.
PS. Good job guys at Eastwood! But it does strike me as an attempt to get people to just buy and waste your products - innit? :P

I ran out of the guide coat a few decades into my project, it was pretty devastating for me and my family because it had financially ruined us and we were only up to stage 2.

only if the beginner has a very very strong tendency towards masochism, like jesus christ. Also I still have no clue how much to sand down from that filler, when to stop and what those low/high actually do (i get that they make the paint rough) but why do i need to do every step 100 times. when do i stop? did he ever stop fucking sanding that goddamn door. honestly I'll probably try to still prep my car but I'll have a painter m8 of mine tell me what to do and check every once in a while. This video was utter overkill and I have a strong feeling that you need like a third of the materials used here to complete what he did
@@1nf32n0 You are right, some of this is completely over kill. Look into wet sanding with a DA sander (if you have a compressor) it will save you a lot of wasted time that he was doing on a flat surface. Block sanding is just for finding your highs and lows. Once you get into the wet sanding phase, you are basically prepping for paint the paint. You need to do this every time you want to apply paint so the paint has something to grab onto otherwise you could risk having paint runs when you are applying your coats (which is fine you will just have to sand them down). As far as knowing when to stop, i use my hands to feel the grit difference and once the whole panel has the same consistency, then i know its time to move up to the next grit. Go to a junk yard and buy a door off of them and practice on that. that way you dont have to worry about making mistakes. Its an art form and the best way to learn an art (for me at least) is to just do it and fuck something up that you dont care about and learn from the mistakes.

This video inspired me to paint my truck. Now I had no garage to do this in, but I did have a carport. 4 poles holding up a roof so I thot what the heck. I taped up 3.5 mil plastic walls from the roof and anchored the bottoms down with semi heavy objects. Two days after I set paint booth lol, a storm come thru with strong winds but I was able to keep booth in tact that night and next day. But wind from the storm changed weather causing wind to blow 18 to 25 mph finally taking half my booth down. Long story short, im going on almost 2 months its taken me to paint my truck basicaly in the open, and one month of time out of that was dedicated to my home made paint booth lol. Its time to color sand it then buff it and see how it comes out. I THINK FOR WHAT ITS BEEN THRU, YOUR NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO TELL!

I'm 67 years old. I'll be 68 in May of 2023. If I intend on trying to paint a 1968 Buick Wildcat, using the meticulous methods shown in this video, can I finish the car before my shoulders give out or I pass away? I would love to do exactly what this guy did in this video. And, have a beautiful paint job on the Wildcat, that anyone who sees it will be enamored by my skills and professional looking job. However, I am afraid of running out of stamina and the will power to see the job to completion. I took a paint thickness measurement on this car and found some areas, like the hood, measured as thick as 22 mils. Just sanding the car down to bare sheet metal would probably take a few weeks, considering I can only stay on task four to five hours a couple of days a week. This video gave me inspiration, knowledge, and hope, yet I couldn't help but feel some despair that it might be a bit overwhelming for me. Great Video, using great products from Eastwood.

I know people who work in body shops, and according to them, they get paid very well.
The money is good, but you do that kind of work, in a stressful enviroment, of bosses demanding more, more faster faster we need more cars out, that job has to go out today!! Etc etc its bullshit, forced to rush your ass off, and if as a result the job not coming out good, you treated like an asshole, its not worth the money, I'm training to be nurse now
The other way is to work for yourself, even if you are doing it on the side, aside from the main job.
If the side job turns out to be successful, as good as the main job or better, its time to consider quitting the main job and make body the switch to doing bodywork as primary work.
For someone that works part time, both the main job and side job could be done.
Make no mistake that body work pays well, if you got decent skills or better.

This paint is more level and glossy than almost all paint found on new cars, including 2 million dollar luxury stuff.
well no a rolls (only luxury cars that can really spec out to that price range) paint job is gonna be on the same scale, "glossyness" (if that's a word) is more about the actual paint used, if you want a rolls that will shine like this they will be more than happy to accommodate. 2million dollar luxury cars are on a scale of themselves everything is done by hand by extremely talented craftsmen.
I watched this 20 times then I painted my truck. Took me one year and came out great. Didn't follow these steps exactly but it gives a good general idea. You will find everyone does things a bit different so you have a general idea then pick your plan. But yeah... you will be sanding alot!
