  • I restore an extremely rusty axe head with mechanical levers. First, I've got to restore the axe. Second, are these mechanical levers any good at splitting wood?

    You need to use a splitting platform, typically a large stump. Otherwise, you're going to chip & ding the axe blade by hitting the dirt under the wood you're splitting. Just sayin'...

      I always used a stump or one of the larger pieces cut from the bottom of the trunk. Used the cut off more than anything since I could move it around when needed

    I think the logo and patent number look better sanded bare than if they had been painted. It gives the axe a nice 👍 industrial look. Great job!

    Those levers used to push the two halves of the wood you're splitting apart.

    Колун крутой, но с комлем крученой берёзы, растущей на болоте, даже он не справится. Да и в острой затрчке он не нуждается, это конечно для красоты))

      When you cut into a log the levers force the two halves apart and split the log

      Someone thought to themselves, you know a device that's never worked right that could be improved on? The axe head. The size, shape, and mechanics of it have never been updated, Im going to be the one to finally improve and fix a millenniums old flaw.

    I used to have something similar, it was called "The Great Divider". It worked better after the spreader pieces came flying out.

      The Great Divider was a knock off of The Chopper 1 which was actually a gimmick when it came out but now their popular again. Lol

    I've got one with a fiberglass core handle. Best splitting maul I've ever had. I've had it for around 15 years and I use it on the regular.

    That is a splitting maul, not your typical axe. Uncle used to have one and you can split damn near any log you wish with those, the little arms force the wood apart as the maul head drives through the log. Best maul ever designed.

      It's a wood splitter axe. When the blade cuts ibto a log, the mechanical levers push the 2 halves apart, splitting the log

    My girlfriend bought me one of these the year we put a wood stove in our 4 season room. It never really worked that well for me , l did better drying the wood for a season , and just using two flea market wedges. Cool restoration

    Блин до конца досмотрел только потом понял что это щепки колоть.
    А так бесполезная работа. Вдшкой пшикнуть и пару кубов проколоть и полезно и чистить не надо. А так если только на сенд повесить.

    I have the exact same axe I bought in the late 70's or early 80's. It has the same name on it. I bought it at a Sears store up here in Canada. I still use it today to split firewood. Mine has blue painted metal parts with an un-stained handle.

    That's a Chopper One splitting axe from the 1980's! I have two and they work great!

    I used one of these to chop and split logs many years ago when I was young, physically fit and stupid. On dry logs it worked a treat, on anything else it always jammed, to the extend that I eventually just removed the splitters and just used it as a straight axe. It was much better live that 🙂

    Your axe head is either a casting or a forging. Most likely a casting. If a casting, it could be cast steel, but most likely cast iron. Cast steel will take an edge and may be temperable. Cast iron does neither.

    Anyone who's split a lot of wood knows that the most difficult, tiring, and frustrating part of the job is when the axe gets stuck. When splitting large pcs of green wood (to speed drying), it happens a lot. The only times I ever hurt myself splitting wood were when trying to remove a stuck axe.

    Не правельно делаешь! колун насаживается через ручку!!! И для того колуна топарище не пойдёт!!!
