First: Sorry for being a little late with the video. I had a lot of stuff going on plus a lot to do for university. Also I am planning on future projects and on 'expanding' my workshop. Stay tuned :)
I got the bunny from @HeldderSteine btw 😄.
In this video I restored an old grater made in 1929 by 'Alexanderwerk' which I bought last year on a flea market. The guy who sold it to me said that he found it a couple of years ago in a house clearance and used it for decoration purposes since then.
When he found it it didn't have the wooden parts that I had to remake. Those parts always seem to miss, but I am very happy with the result of the ones I made.
The work on the project took about 30 hours (inclusive filming) plus about 15 hours of editing.
If you are willing to support me leave a comment, subscribe and share my work, I really appreciate and it helps me a lot!
D.R.G.M. stands for 'Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster'. That was the 'small' patent in Germany from 1891 till 1945.
The grater was in a quite good condition considering its age. The plating on the inner part was in a good condition and didn't have much damage, so after a lot of thinking I decided to leave it on and add a new layer of plating on the original layer. Even though that is untypical you can do that, if the original plating is in a good enough condition, meaning that there are no major damages and the plating is not corroded much or is peeling off.
I hope you will have some fun watching the video! If you have any further questions on the process, tools, material, nickel plating or else write a comment, I will try my best to answer your questions.
I hope you liked the video! Thank you for watching and feel free to leave a comment and subscribe if you liked :)

MASTERPIECE!
Thank you!
Outstanding work 👍 loved the lathe work and making the missing piece. I thought this was a cheese grater. Fabulous work my friend.
Thank you mate! You can also use it with cheese, I think it was meant to be used for different stuff.
GOOD WORK, NICE RESTO

😍 About a third of the way into the video I suddenly realized, "Ah, that wooden block in the Instagram post is for the push block!" (I'm a little slow... 🥴)
That "AW" logo in the frame is a clever piece of design.
😄 Thank you for your comment my friend!
Yes the AW logo is really iconic!
Great work as always 👏👏
Thank you!
Beautiful work. And happy to see another LEGO fan.

Wonderful restoration, better than new.

Master Skills....very nice!
Thank you so much! 🙏🏼
Very well done
Thank you!
Niiiiiice!!!! Reeaally nice man! Superb finish on it, and a lovely well made missing part 👍👍👍. Top job 👏👏👏. 😎
Thank you so much!
This is not really for grating vegetables, but for making breadcrumbs.
But as you can see, you can also use it for vegetables 🥕😄

nice work doc!
Thank you! 🙏🏼🥕
Great project, sir. It was well worth the watch!
Thank you sir, glad you liked it!
good job bro
Thanks mate, I appreciate it!
I inherited the exact same grater from my grandma. the original color is "okkergelb" no painting on the letters, the wooden press piece had a square top and is made of one piece. originally it was tinned and not nickelized i think.
Thank you for your comment!
There were available in different colors and the push block also had different shapes. You can find pictures of that on google 🙂
Very nice bro❤️❤️❤️
Thank you mate, appreciate it!
The labor performed on this grater was outstanding. Especially the fabrication of missing parts; retrofitted in order for the machine to perform as when it was new. That being said, I did have a major concern regarding the paint type, and particularly the grease that was used. Neither were food-grade certified, like Fakolith paint, and Apiezon PFPE 501 non-tox grease. Other than that, i will issue a thumbs-up. Well done.
Thank you very much, I really appreciate your comment!
While I absolutely understand your concern I have to say that neither the paint nor the grease come in contact with the food, because of the build type. Also the grease is actually food safe.
Since the tool will also only be a decorative piece for me, I didn’t bother getting food safe color, which I of course would have done if actually used (especially since I am a med student 😄).
@@DrHutOfHandcraft I greatly appreciate your observance of safe food handling. I look forward to your next episode with great eagerness.

Thank you!
very good Dr.👍🙂
Thank you!
When I was kid, I used very often this device (exactly this same model) to do carrots salads without cutting the fingers… try to find actually on the market a model doing the same with same quality, speed and safety ! Imagine only in dreams..
Thank you for your comment!
Brother I'm so proud of you! This love that you put into every single part. I already see you among the top TH-cam restorations in the world ❤️
PS: you wouldn't have made it without the fly at 08:16
😂 the fly made it special 😂😂
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it ❤️
Ótimo vídeo. Ótima restauração. Parabéns 👏👏👏
Thank you!
Name the rabbit "Alexander" 😁
😂👍🏼👍🏼
That is beautiful how you restored that grater to working order. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Excellent work.
Thank you so much!
Great work, but, I have SO MANY QUESTIONS !
1) If we are going to use the sandblaster, why bother stripping the paint? 1:26 / 1:39
2) If you are going to re-plate it anyway, why not sandblast down and remove the old plating? 4:50
3) If that wooden circle piece will go on the lathe, why not cut the circle using that? 13:35
OK, I only had three, but I am subscribing anyway !
Thank you very much for your comment and your support!
To your questions:
1.) Old paint, especially those that were used back in time on old stuff may contain lead and lead is toxic. So you remove the paint safely first with paint stripper and sandblast afterwards. Different lacquers also may contain chrome, especially Chrome VI, which is also toxic and carcinogenic.
Also sandblasting paint is very annoying and makes the blasting medium turn bad much faster.
2.) You can of course do that. But if the plating is in good condition, you can just keep it how it is. The old plating also protects the steel and was in a surprisingly good shape. I suppose the tool wasn't used very much or was used with much care.
Removing or leaving the original plating is I think just a matter of style. I actually always remove the plating and replate, but this time I wanted to try out something new and share it with you guys.
3.) I try to avoid working with wood on the lathe, I only do that when I don't see another way to get the desired finish. Also I wanted to work a little with the bandsaw since I have it and like working with it, it's a great tool! Plus I wanted to try out the jig I made.
As you have seen in the video I just turned the face clean on the lathe, made a chamfer and sanded on the lathe.
Thank you very much for your comment and your great questions!
Lovely restoration, shame the handle had stains
Thank you!
Parabéns pelo trabalho 😮😮😮
Thank you 🙏🏼
Fabulous job there! Lots of different skills and techniques used here.
I must say that the hand painted lettering always seems not worth it to me. When the rest of the paint job is so flawless the lettering being slightly jittery detracts from the quality. Seems that original did not have painted letters and it would still be legible with just the ivory.
Thank you so much!
I will keep your advice in mind for the future!
I agree. The hand painting seems to detract from the otherwise flawless finish.
@@davethursfield9283 I will keep that in mind for the future 🙂
Roger! For your plastic pet. I assume it's a rabbit.
😄
👍👏 sem comentários, bom demais 👏👏
Thank you!
Genial
Merci 😄
i think work much better with hard cheese, bread, good work
The rabbit wanted carrots 🥕😄
I always wondered why you couldn’t plate over existing nickel plating. It didn’t seem to make sense to me. Thanks!
Thank you for your comment!
You can do that of course, but the plating has to be in good shape, which it surprisingly was on this part.
I want to name him "Sir Buttocks"
😄😄
Hey Dr. Hut what is the name of the song in the reveal portion of the video?
It’s French Fuse - Rain Fuse. It’s always in the video description 🙂
@@DrHutOfHandcraft oh… I guess I overlooked it.
