I love the fact that you made the scissors fully functional again, while keeping most of the pitting and scars. You saved the tool's history for the next owner(s) and the next 160 years. Very well done. Thanks for sharing.
Many moons ago I served in the Royal Navy, I was also a bosuns yeoman (rigger and sail maker), those scissors look like an earlier version of RN sail makers shears for cutting canvas and leather.

This form is spezialy made, to cut fabric or leather plane on the table. They are build in several sizes and also used from tailors.

those would be seamstress scissors. the bend is so the bottom scissor will stay flat on the surface. In case anyone was wondering they are made so big so the seamstress would have to make fewer cuts. This made it easier to cut a straight line and less work.
I cringed a little when I saw he used them on paper.
@@DragonTwin88 Both are essentially plant fibers, just paper is more like felt. Shouldn't be a lot of difference cutting.
@@KaiHenningsen but there is. Using scissors made for fabric on paper will dull the blade. Yes it would still cut paper but if you used it on fabric again you will find that the edges of the fabric are not as clean a cut as you want.
It's quite the testament to whoever forged those that they survived being buried in the dirt and exposed to the elements for all that time.

They look like standard fabric shears. When you're cutting down a bolt of cloth that's 5 feet wide, you want to do it quickly, but keep a straight line. Thus, very long bladed shears.

Tailors Shears? Although tailors shears generally have a spur on the lower grip to assist flat cutting on the cutting table.

For those really rusty/dirty jobs have you ever used an electrolysis bath? I used it on a seized 50 year old engine block. Took about 48 hours just because of the size and I don’t know if the power source was strong enough but afterwards even the water jackets were spotless.

hi, these scissors had a thin springwasher in between the halfs, as you can see, the blades are curved, and this spring washer took care of the action, and actually kept the blades sharp when moving...selfsharpening..

You did amazingly well, and I’m sure that you spent an awful long time on these, well done they look amazing. As a side note, I’ve always wondered what would happen if you added some salts to the rust remover fluid and used it with electrolysis? I wonder if it’s been tried?

How do you know or figure out the angles the cutting edges need?

Sharpening scissors is difficult, the blades are hollow ground and the angle to sharpen is almost square to the face. The blades are curved so it is only the cutting edges that touch. Once they get ground down this much you start to lose the hollow ground and they don’t stay together to the end.

Wallpaper shears were much longer and lighter. I use to use them, also these for fabric.

That does look sharp and it still will work.
HCL would work much better than WD-40 Rust Remover since it is very agressive as that rust on the scissors was there for about 160 years.

Scissors are hard for me to sharpen , for me with a good pair of scissors , much less a pair I would not give a nick for , so complete and total thumbs up guy , I wouldn’t have thought there wasn’t enough metal to cut anything much less as being able to cut paper , but tell me can these scissors of yours cut cloth ?
It appears you need a more powerful bench wire wheel. it bogs down too easily when you apply the scissors to it.

I strongly suspect those are a pair of fabric scissors.
It’s a shame, but no matter how well the restore is, and it’s pretty good, there’s a lot of metal lost off that. I’ve restored old pretty rusted items, and while they seem to work pretty well, and look as good as I can get them to look, I realize that they’re really not quite the same as when they were originally in use. Still, it’s the design I’m saving more than anything, and that is original.
So I tried sharpening scissors but mine would not cut very well what trick did I miss
Those shears are quite similar to a pair my great-great-great-g-ma, Elisa June, owned when she had a drapery business. She bought it from a retired traveling Confederate haberdasher who repaired soldier uniforms.

Those are in the style of Tailors/Drapers Shears but give the size of the lower blade I'd say they are most likely Drapers Shears, with the exception of the minor ding in the thumb hole the shape is how it is meant to be.
Those scissors are made from wrought iron. Not steel. You can tell from the visible grain on the thumb strap. Probably not heat treatable. Very low carbon.

I'm sure there is a good reason but why don't they ever just sandblast it from the start?
If I send in something to get restored can I also pay to get it back. I have some knifes that been past down but work.

This old timer scissors was from the U.S. Civil War era. Such as 1863; that's when West Virginia split off/broke away, became independent from the coastal Virginia. ✂️ 👌 😑 😒 🙄 😅 ✂️
If u were gonna paint the handles u could of filled the pits to give it a cleaner smoother look...
That's a LOT of work with epoxy. He doesn't have the time or equipment to try to sputter weld new metal into it - and they ARE very old, and were abused.
У него все есть ,а делает через _______ зад плохой слеарь .если этим ножницам столько лет,то сначала нужно искать клеймо,а если их берет на пильник, то их можно сразу выкинуть
Хорошая реставрация.
Но у мастера есть гриндер..... зачем тогда показывать работу напильником, дрелью шлифовать торцевым кругом. Можно было довести ножницы до идеала на гриндере, тем более, что металла на ножницах продостаточно....

I think those are fabric shears. If I'm right, anyone in the clothing industry will yell at you for using them on paper. 🙂
