This is probably a pretty weird place to ask for advice, but I'll give it a try. I am a senior in high school, and right now I have the option to take two core computer science courses at my local community college (one is in discrete structures, the other is in computer systems), and have those transfer to a state university. If I took these, I would be able to start off with 300 level computer science courses as a freshman. I'm not sure if there are even enough computer science classes I can take as an undergraduate if I start with 300 levels, and I would be getting an objectively worse education for those two classes I would take during high school. Do you have any advice for this situation?

I’m nearly done with my first year at Umich and just now decided I may want to major in CS😭 any advice or warnings you might have for someone that’s not really a math person?
aha i could go on and on regarding tips, but I guess for math specifically there's typically two kinds of people. The first kind understand the theory really well and can more or less dissect any problem thrown at them. The second kind have to do tons and tons of practice problems (which is painful) to recognize the patterns and do well on the exams. I'm more of the second kind and I didn't realize it until my last few math courses 😅. I say, if you're doing cs, spend more time focusing on those classes and just focus on getting by in math.
Math and CS double major here, *practice*. That goes for both CS and math. Don't understand how Java works? Look up a tutorial, follow along, but don't stop there. Code something with the knowledge you got. Something original. If you can't think of something, look up coding project ideas and see if you can implement it. Just following a tutorial will give you the tools you need, but you won't know how to use them, that is where independent practice comes in Same for math. Say you don't understand how u-substitution works. Watch a tutorial for one or two integrals, and try it yourself. For calc 1-3, differential equations, and linear algebra there are *plenty* of practice problems online with answers for you to try to make sure you are getting it. Practice makes perfect, practice will make you just as good as the top students Another huge tip: Use office hours! Your professors are there to help you succeed, and they set aside several hours a week to help you do just that. 03:31 discrete mathematics: mathematical studies that don't involve a topological structure. 05:32 should've been called "introduction to the von Neumann architecture" 07:44 lol, it actually baffled computer scientists for a long time before they figured out a satisfactory theory for computability and formal languages, etc... 08:44 actually, subtyping, dynamic dispatching, encapsulated mutability are all flawed in one way or another, in terms of vulnerability, scalability, parallelizability, etc. and one should really consider better abstractions (Xerox be sad for inventing Smalltalk) although i think distinguishing between computer science and software engineering in the degree is probably a good idea: as you said you learnt a lot of things that don't interest you and are almost useless to you.
I had a questions about computer engineering at umich... is it possible to be a computer engineering major but choose CS courses? If i do take this path, knowledge wise will I be at par with a pure CS major at the College of Engineering UMich?
mhmmm honestly not that much studying but rather it's a lot more doing work since many computer science classes are project based so you spend most of your time working rather than studying (if that makes sense).
I'm having trouble deciding where to transfer to. I got accepted to both of NC's top schools NCSU and UNC CH but I like NCSU campus better. Would that be a good reason to choose one over the other. Its important to note that UNC CH is slightly more recognizable.
@@litete2512 Hi, i'm commenting from my new account but I am currently in Community College and I have decided to go to NCSU for my computer science degree.
Me as a software engineer that didn’t make it to a good university. What I’ve learned is you don’t need to be in a good school as long as you know how to program well.
Not to answer this 11 months later but I can only speak for my experience which was years ago. And comparing Berkeley now to umich years ago may not be comparable. But some courses at Berkeley are harder in some ways but some are easier than any courses I took at Michigan so it depends. I think the grades can be less generous at times and the class sizes are huge. Umich still somehow has smaller class sizes even though the computer science department is big. Michigan hires more people to teach I think. Michigan professors felt more available to me than it seems at Berkeley. I felt like research opertinities were easy to come by but for a long time they favored a few fields and less others. Not a lot of compilers professors or language construction profs. Overall I think the degrees are very similar in quality but Berkeley has always had more variety of courses than Michigan. That has changed a bit in recent years. Berkeley has more money and there is a proximity bias for Berkeley with companies but recruitment from Michigan is really high overall so I would not be concerned.
Also I would like to add that I think michigans stance on how to provide services and evaluate students during the pandemic were far better than Berkeley. And I can tout for michigans disability services. They are far from perfect but in my experience much better than a lot of public universities.
@@EloveAbove many reason why. I worked as a Database Administrator for 6 years and now looking back it's not necessary to have a 4 year degree. I've been on many interviews and they could careless about my degree. They are more excited about my database certifications in Oracle and Microsoft. Also I've made more money sitting at home with little effort. Than I've ever did working a 9-5 for some corporation.
I seriously don't understand how American universities structure their courses. Why does a computer science major have to study religion and criminology? Makes no sense.
@@WajdaanM But why should you have to take other classes at all? Wouldn't it make more sense to just focus on one's major, and finish that in less time since you don't have any other courses taking up our time? And if you really are interested in those other classes, the reduced time it would take to complete your degree could give you time to study those as well.
@@Neoroticus In other countries, people just study the lessons that make up their major, and maybe one or two extra courses, but ones that directly relate to their major (for instance a computer science major would probably also have a few classes of mathematics). I don't see how studying something completely unrelated would be of any use to someone.

Thanks Brother. I'm in 3rd Year fall. i am in cs trying to make some projects and then i want some internship, i dont have much idea about internships tho. gotta learn about that too lol.
I’m majoring in computer engineering and i feel like CE is way harder than CS. Is that right?
Hi, I had a question... If you got into LSA, shouldn't say that in your degree instead of COE?
i transferred to the engineering school midway through 🙂
bro can a pre-medical student (the one who learned biology in A level) apply for BS Computer science in the university of Michigan?
umich was one of my top colleges to go to back in senior year
03:31 discrete mathematics: mathematical studies that don't involve a topological structure.
05:32 should've been called "introduction to the von Neumann architecture"
07:44 lol, it actually baffled computer scientists for a long time before they figured out a satisfactory theory for computability and formal languages, etc...
08:44 actually, subtyping, dynamic dispatching, encapsulated mutability are all flawed in one way or another, in terms of vulnerability, scalability, parallelizability, etc. and one should really consider better abstractions (Xerox be sad for inventing Smalltalk)
although i think distinguishing between computer science and software engineering in the degree is probably a good idea: as you said you learnt a lot of things that don't interest you and are almost useless to you.
Does the upper level cs classes build upon the lower level classes or do they not matter much? Thanks
I had a questions about computer engineering at umich... is it possible to be a computer engineering major but choose CS courses? If i do take this path, knowledge wise will I be at par with a pure CS major at the College of Engineering UMich?
The're pretty much interchangeable/identical when it comes to applying jobs
watching as a uofm cs grad, currently in the phd program here! (also, for anyone interested, u can transfer in 203 ;))) )
ur backstory kinda similar to my situation rn, i wish i could transfer too
Did u do comp sci at LSA or school of engineering?
I started at LSA then transferred to the school of engineering!
Mediocrity does pay off!!👏
hello how many hours per week did you study on average for computer science major? thanks
mhmmm honestly not that much studying but rather it's a lot more doing work since many computer science classes are project based so you spend most of your time working rather than studying (if that makes sense).
Did you put in a lot of effort in your years at UM?
aha yes i did :)
i had to in order to pass LOL
I was kinda shocked you didn't get into msu
I'm having trouble deciding where to transfer to. I got accepted to both of NC's top schools NCSU and UNC CH but I like NCSU campus better. Would that be a good reason to choose one over the other. Its important to note that UNC CH is slightly more recognizable.
Where are you now?
@@litete2512 Hi, i'm commenting from my new account but I am currently in Community College and I have decided to go to NCSU for my computer science degree.
Futives?
Bro showed a bullish stock market trend at 0:29 while talking about cs 😂😂😂
Me as a software engineer that didn’t make it to a good university. What I’ve learned is you don’t need to be in a good school as long as you know how to program well.
Bro B- i thought you were getting A in plus ! and that - is only - not -us
How is umich eecs if compared to the uc Berkeley eecs. Please reply
no clue 😅
They are far from perfect but in my experience much better than a lot of public universities.
i feel like he cappin
I have an Information Technology degree and going to college was the biggest waste of time ever.
How so?
@@EloveAbove many reason why. I worked as a Database Administrator for 6 years and now looking back it's not necessary to have a 4 year degree. I've been on many interviews and they could careless about my degree. They are more excited about my database certifications in Oracle and Microsoft. Also I've made more money sitting at home with little effort. Than I've ever did working a 9-5 for some corporation.
I seriously don't understand how American universities structure their courses. Why does a computer science major have to study religion and criminology? Makes no sense.
We get electives so you choose what other courses to take
@WajdaanM To keep you there longer because if we just focused on core classes it would only take 2-3 years
@@WajdaanM But why should you have to take other classes at all? Wouldn't it make more sense to just focus on one's major, and finish that in less time since you don't have any other courses taking up our time?
And if you really are interested in those other classes, the reduced time it would take to complete your degree could give you time to study those as well.
@@stefmyt5062 that's what I don't link about college either, their system seems flawed and old to me.
@@Neoroticus In other countries, people just study the lessons that make up their major, and maybe one or two extra courses, but ones that directly relate to their major (for instance a computer science major would probably also have a few classes of mathematics).
I don't see how studying something completely unrelated would be of any use to someone.
if u got a penny for every time i come back to this video after i take a midterm and promptly fail you'd be rich because i just got a 28% on my 281 midterm and i came here, saw you got a C+ in 281 and was like okay maybe it isn't completely over for me. or maybe it is. idk. stay tuned to find out 🤪
you got this!! C’s get degrees 😄
hey give credit where credit's due, esp if you're going to completely rip a joke from the original creator lol 3:40
math in computer science haard ??
yup if you’re bad at math like me
@@Sayhyuun 😭😭 okay ty
Bro you look like Jason lol
alright i’ll bite, who’s jason?

…honestly. If you were to wait and go to college in late 20s early 30s - all those ha requirements colleges “require” won’t even be applicable lol
Such a waste of life taking all those acts lol
