Good Video but some kids don’t have the opportunity to do an unpaid internship during summer or just work on leetcode because they have to pay for their school fees. Recognize your path and privilege and understand there isn’t one right way to obtain this goal.

Great Video, as a current Junior at the University of Minnesota, with a SWE internship inbound for Summer. This will be my 2nd internship, and my first in SWE.
Getting started early is huge. But don’t be too discouraged, it’s still possible. This is an unforgiving industry after all. I really began grinding sophomore year.
In my experience the most important things that got me my internships:
    - Make friends with academic and career forward mindsets. You’ll all learn so much from each other and be able to expedite your learning about classes, industry and career readiness. This helps you stay in the news about industry standards.
    - Update Resume Weekly
    - Apply Constantly
    - Student Orgs
    - Personal Projects

Hey i noticed that you are already in UW Madison so I would like ask you the question and know your opinion on:
I have an offer letter from UW Madison but i am confused on whether to got for it or not, i am thinking about Texas A&M (college station) and UW Madison. It would be great if you could give your opinion on that it would really help me choose..... (I am going for fall 2024)

@@rameezrahaman3222 I see you did not get a response. I also went to UW-Madison for an MS degree in CS. I went there before Aman did.
If you are getting a BS degree, the smaller school might be better because you will have better access to the professors at a smaller school. If you are getting an advanced degree (MS or PhD), then Madison is better, as it is one of the premier research schools in math, science, and engineering (software is math and engineering).
When I was at UW, all MS graduate students received four years of support. It was not enough money for everyone, but it was much better than paying for everything.
There is a new building going up in Madison for the new data science program. That will be interesting, so it might help you make a decision.
As far as which classes are the most important, I'd say today those are going to be in these areas:
      0. Programming. Pick a programming language that you will need to do everything else and get good at it. Python or C++, probably. also learn some low-level things when you can (see #3).
      1. Statistics (machine learning is all statistics and #2 on this list.)
      2. Databases.
      3. Computer architecture (the low-level stuff). Taking a class in digital circuit design before this class might be useful so you know Boolean algebra and how the circuits work. The Boolean algebra is the most important here.
      4. A class where you learn about Javascript, CSS, and the other low-level parts of web page design. This will be something that was not in the curriculum when I was there, so I can't help with it. I add this only because so much of the tech world creates web pages for small businesses. You might know all of this already, so it might be a moot point.
      5. A class where you learn about cloud computing. That includes what virtualization is and how containers work to move software (servlets) around a worldwide computer network. This might mean taking a class in computer virtualization (one of my advisors wrote the textbook) and one in computer networking. It may also be combined into a single course now. These courses were advanced and separate when I was in school.
      Good luck!
      Todd B.
