    HEADS UP... Your seat is different than mine... I have a 2003 E39 530i. I have TWO cables for each side of the seat. One motor and two cables control the left shoulder, a second motor and two other cables control the right shoulder. I traced one cable from the bad shoulder (right) to a motor and did your repair. I thought I was done... Then I noticed that each side has two cables. So I did your repair to the other cable also.
    BRILLIANT!!!!! Works like a champ. So I take it that BMW made the center cables just a tad too short.. or the sheath just a tad too long.

    Simple fix. And works great afterwards. Thanks for the video. I've also done the coat hanger trick with the headrest. A tip if you drive an old bimmer - Do not play with the seat adjustment while out driving your car. Because when it breaks, depending on the seat location, the drive home will suck so bad.

      Did that with a VW bug, put it too far back at the drive in movie to make room for, ummm... my girl and I to maneuver. We pushed it right off the tracks in the heat of the moment!!
      I had no light so I had to pile stuff behind the seat to keep it up far enough to reach the pedals. (Coming to a stop and cornering were a beyotch, to say the least).
      Thanks for sparking the memory, those were great days in America!!!

    Great tip. I just made for both seat. They are working properly once again. I took the cable out prior to cut the plastic tubing. I thought it was safer to the cable. To level the seat I used drill to adjust the affected side. Once one the working bench, it took about 15 min to fix it. Thanks Nathan, once again for the video.

      I need some help/advice I got all the way to stripping the cable and the whole metal part came out. I have not been able to get either end back so it is able to rotate. How hard was it to take both ends of the cable out and get them back in correctly? I even bought a new cable that I can replace but the cable doesn't seem to catch.

    Thanks for the help. Can't imagine how much a shop or a dealer would charge to do this. Probably why a lot of people just ignore the problem.

    Sorry, but you're making this much more difficult than it has to be. I've done both my front seats. You don't even have to remove the seats or remove the motor. Just take out 4 seat bolts, lean seat back against the back seat. You don't even have to remove the seat belt cable. Find the cable under the front seat that goes into the motor, that corresponds with the twisted side, & cut about 1/4 of an inch out of the length of the PLASTIC, in the MIDDLE of the cable that covers the 4 sided cable. You will have room to work, with the seat leaning back. Then, just super glue or epoxy or tape the 2 parts back together. The 4 sided cable will now move back into the motor to connect with the gear on it's own. Remember to adjust seat backs to an even keel before you start. I did 2 of these with a bad back, & I'm 61. You young whippersnappers should have no trouble. lol

      Thank you for sharing your solution!
      I followed your exact instructions and my passenger seat is now fully operational! it was very nice to only remove 4 bolts and lean the seat back rather than disassemble it.
      After cutting a 1/4 section out of the middle with a razor blade, I used duct tape to connect the sheath back together and I couldn't be happier.
      I did it to the left side recline cable and the left side rear elevator cable.

    Hi, watched video as have this problem with seats twisting on back rest and height adjustment. Motors an absolute nightmare to get to, tried to get cable out but extremely fiddly. Tried to just cut section of the cable sleeve out as a last resort, about 2.5cm, slid sleeve back together, taped together... WORKS!!! Lot easier than removing the cable, removing end cap, and trimmimg down sleeve...

    How do you know what cable to shorten? Do you shorten the side that is twisted toward the back?

    I just did it slightly different. I never had to remove the metal cap from the motor so i didnt need to heat it or unscrew anything up there. I just cut the rubber cord twice and took the middle section out. Have it hooked up to the power supply and the problem seems to be fixed (seat still out of car). Stay tuned for whether or not it stays fixed this way.

    This perplexes me. What is the science behind this? How does this simple melt, remove, cut off, melt and put back on fix a twisted seat? I saw it work, so I know it works, but how does it work?

    • @honlu6725
      @honlu6725 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      What the issue is...the black plastic sleeve is either just a hair too long or it has stretched over time causing the center drive cable to disengage from the motor...by cutting back some of the black plastic sleeve it allows the center drive cable to engage further into the motor drive...thus restoring cable drive

    All these extra steps ? All you do is disconnect cable on any side of the seat back motor. Run 12v to 2 pins on harness. One side is disabled now so just adjust the other side till untwisted then return cable to motor you removed. No heating anything necessary. Remove one side adjust with the other .

    • @judgegarry
      @judgegarry 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is that most of the time only one side moves at all, so the cable needs shortening to get the inner square drive cable back into the motor.

      Try driving a 20 year old Jaguar, Mercedes, Audi, etc... complicated things that make BMW luxurious are prone to wear. Some of us LIKE to work on our rides. My 2003 525i Sport Touring is still far and away the best quality car I've owned. The last of the E39s were the best, and the Touring is arguably the most advanced and solidify engineered wagon chassis. The E39 series had many firsts...
