Lineker was unlucky to be fair not to win the league at Everton, he scored 40 goals.
Liverpool and Everton were comfortably the best two teams in British football in that era so the fact that he missed winning the league title and the the same year Everton winning the European Cup Winners Cup ( which was a proper European trophy that allowed only winners to participate by the way) it's fair to say old Gary was a tad unlucky lol
Lineker was not at Everton when they won the ECWC or the league in 85. He transferred to Everton in 85 and left in 86 after the world cup. Everton won the league again in 1987.
The reason they didn't retain the title was because they changed the team to accommodate Lineker. Everton also lost the FA cup final to Liverpool in that year (1986). So Everton changed the team for Lineker only to lose the 'Double'. Then Lineker fucked off to Spain and Everton started winning trophies again. Hated man in Liverpool. Now a hated man throughout the land.

Everton threw the title away in '86 in one game at Oxford, which they should have won at a canter but on the night were flattered to only lose 0-1. Liverpool beat Chelsea 1-0 that weekend to clinch the title. Chelsea were a terrible team back then but if they had somehow pulled off a shock result that day it would have set up perhaps the most nail-biting title finish of all time. Everton's last game was against West Ham a few days later and it would have been a scenario where Everton would be champions with a win, West Ham would be champions with a win and Liverpool would be champions with a draw.
My Dad was at that Chelsea game. To this day, he insists that Kenny Dalglish was offside for the winning goal.

Just after the Jack Walker stand first opened, I did a stadium tour with Ronnie Clayton as the guide. Somebody asked him who he thought was the best Rovers player he had ever seen. He had absolutely no hesitation in replying "Alan Shearer". If that's what Ronnie Clayton thought, then there is no doubt!
I'd always put Greavsie well over Shearer. But you always knew you had a world class goal scorer with Alan.

I became a three lions supporter after watching Gary Liniker play . Great player and person ! Alan Shearer incredible , i would put him among top ten strikers of all time .
Gary Linker was a quality striker one of the best during his era, I very much admired him as a player very calm and gentlemanly. Amazing stat about what he did at Everton and he still didnt win a first div league title when they won the league before he joined and after he left and the fact thet he scored 40 goals in the one season he was there.
Just wish shearer could of won something with Newcastle

It probably doesn't rankle with Shearer too much because he did lift a title at Blackburn .
Think it would have hurt him more had Newcastle won the title in 96 or won something just after he left but they haven't so I'm guessing he's not regretting things too much

Our ‘86 team was probably the best. We would have won the league if not for 2 costly losses. Lineker was superb in 86, and took that form to the world cup

Lineker turned Blackburn down and Spurs didn’t take Blackburn seriously as they didn’t think they had the money to back up their bold plans, and as the Journalist Alan Nixon said - “The fact is that Jack Walker could have bought Tottenham Hotspur if he wanted to, never mind Gary Lineker”
Blackburn signed Shearer instead, and the rest is history.
No one talks about the 20 odd goals shearer scored for southampton in the first division !

It was the la quinta del buitre era, the best real Madrid homegrown generation of all time, believe me, it wasnt lineker's fault, barca didn't have a great team by any estimation. La quinta del buitre was one of the best teams in Europe but had the bad luck of having to play perhaps the best club side of all time, Sacchi's AC milan

Lies... he played 99 percent of our games and was a sub for the last game. he admitted his second medal was less deserved as he played like 18 games out of 38.
