Out of all the theories I've read about the MV's storyline, The one I agree with the most is the one about the parasocial relationship theme where Hee-Soo is a schoolgirl who is lonely as a result of her lack of friends & her being outcasted by her classmates (as seen by the way they barely seem to acknowledge her existence).
Hee-Soo eventually turns to New Jeans & their music for comfort & it doesn't take long before she no longer views them as distant celebrities but as her friends. She is no longer bothered by people ignoring her & she imagines NJ as being any average girlfriend group that laughs, plays, gossip & dance together. We see how she imagines them coming to visit her after she got hurt & writing on her arm cast. Apparently the cam-recorder she uses to film the girls is a kind of metaphor to represent kpop fans & how they are always filming idols (at music shows for example) for memories.
Eventually Hee-Soo gets so caught up in her fantasy friendship, she doesn't notice the boy, who is always watching her & seems to be the only person who is interested in her.
Eventually, as the years go by, Hee-Soo grows out of her one-sided obsession (as seen when she wakes up by herself at home & she sees there is nothing on her white cast) at the very end, we see her as adult & some fans theorise she may have even married that boy from her school. Hee-Soo takes out her old VHS of New Jeans & even though she stopped keeping up with the group years ago, she is nostalgic about the good times she shared with them.
For me, I think the entire MV of Ditto is great metaphor to represent the relationship between Kpop idols & their fans, especially those stans who view idols as their comfort zone/escape & are very caught up on them, without making it super creepy or not negative, (for e.g. like the movie Perfect Blue)
my ridiculous theory outside the context of the MV (in this case, Heesoo representing the fans)
The 6 were involved in an accident (represented by her arm in a cast), and Heesoo is the only one who survived.
An interesting fact is that when she wakes up on the couch, the signatures on her arm are not there, but the nail that Minji painted is.
The VHS and the camera represent the memories they created in the past.
Side B appears to be much more melancholic, the MV starts with memories of them running in the hallway. It seems that Heesoo doesn't have a relationship with the 5 girls, but according to my theory they are no longer alive, so Heesoo "ignores" them.
Heesoo still tries to end the memories by breaking the camera, but in the end everything was stored on VHS, so finally she works up the courage to watch the tapes...
Based on the context of the MV, your theory is what made the most sense so far.

Because when you watch the clips the OP has pointed out, you'll notice how Hanni acts differently from the rest of the members. [for e.g, she is always staring at Hee-Soo & during the rain scene, Hanni & Hee-soo are the only ones wearing black uniform while the members are wearing the brown ones.]

Exactlyyyyyy, i relate to this song and video so much cause I turn to KPop for comfort and it’s a safe space to be happy freely. Feeling lonely really sucks
one meaning is about entering a fandom, living the good moments, the bad moments and growing up into a fandom and when you get older you remain with the memories. you think you may be alone by stanning and it's only from your side, but they want to say to you that you are not alone and newjeans love their fandom and appreciate it. also they seem like ghosts in a way, always there around you , going through life together. it's well thought and evokes a lot of things and feelings.
the girl with a camcorder = fandom, Bunnies (her name is Ban Hee Soo, representing Bun-nie-s)
filming = stanning
NewJeans = idol
the boy = real love, real life
the girl with a camcorder films idol at the beginning but the subject is changed to the boy (from NewJeans)
then the girl stops filming and abandoning the camcorder, which means she stops stanning her idol.
fans are getting older and finally forget their idol while time passing by. but the memories remain.

I always got goosebumps when I watch their mv
a movie in korea named ditto was released in 2000. the story goes a girl and a guy fall in love but end up in an accident and the guy wears a cast. just like heesoo in the mv. what i think of this mv is survivors guilt. they might have been friends in the past but due to a tragic accident (relating with the deer, they might have hit in a car crash) and all of them died except heesoo. heesoo thinks she should have died with them and imagines them. if you see heesoo's cast, one of the members wrote "don't die!!"" heesoo also gets a call from minji at the end and in part b where she leaves the rest of the girls symbolizing her moving on. you could see the deer in both mvs, and a deer symbolizes a good omen, meaning a guide is watching over you from heaven (new jeans in the story are dead and watching over heeseo.) the guy in the mv is what helps her move on from the survivors guilt.
This is a pre-release song, the other song will be out this January 2. Minji contributed in writing the lyrics for 'Ditto'

It's about the parasocial relationship fans share with their favorite groups, to the world it's nothing but for them it's everything, from giving hope,strength, courage(since it's made for the fans as told by MHJ) . As it shows in the end she goes out with the boy and remember nj as a fond memory, like in the mv what the girl needed at that point was an escape and nj became one. But when she plays the vcr again after a long time, the girls come back. In a way nj will be there whenever you need them. It's beautiful, sad and again beautiful. I like how raw the mv is both aesthetic wise and message wise any fandom can relate to this.
In reality there are also theories that fit a lot with this MV, but everyone thinks what they want

As the producer already mentioned, this is the story of New Jeans and their fans. Just as I love idols so much but I can't be like them (like deer are pretty and mysterious, but difficult to approach), I decided to live my current life (the time when a girl grows up with a boyfriend), and after time passed, I liked New Jeans. It was not a meaningless time and it was also a precious memory. When I took out the memory box again, New Jeans opened the door and came in.
The actress who plays Heesoo plays one of the main characters in the zombie show All of Us Are Dead (which I really liked).
Wow, I missed that. There was no way to recognize her from those close ups and fragments of her face. Her name is Park Ji Hoo for those interested. She played Nam On-jo in "All of Us Are Dead". She also played the main character in a movie "House of Hummingbird". One of the best movies I've seen last year, although the movie is from 2018.

OMG Thina, I knew we could count on your big brain(!!!) and above all, your empathy, to understand what was going on with the Ditto MVs. There is only one other reactor I've found (and I've watched many, I can't count) that like you, bothered to look up the name of their fandom and the symbolism of the fawn/deer, in order to place their thoughts/theories into proper perspective. Notwithstanding how we all feel about New Jeans and their impact on the industry, the instrumentation of the song and the members' vocals, or how Ador markets the group, this particular MV reminded me of how it felt to be a young girl, it conjured up such a range of emotions. Perhaps that's why people say they feel sad even though there is camaraderie, there is also loneliness, awkwardness, being apart from a group, growing up. It's a lot, but the song is still catchy.
I think you caught the core. New Jeans means 'Kpop idols' for that lonely girl (her refuge). So they are imaginary ones- as she grows, she likes a boy and also she leaves the group with age. And she overcame her loneliness and became an adult. The final scene of B means the girl became a woman and recalls the new jeans.
The lyrics are really telling more of the story that matches the video than people seem to mention. Every character just wants the other to say what they feel for the other back, ditto. From the fan to the performer, to the performer to the fans, from boy to a girl who met eyes.

Hee-soo means Bunnies, the fandom of New Jeans, and most fans can only get in touch with the singer through media (ex. the camcorder that Hee-soo keeps carrying in the music video), as shown in the video. Fans and singers are always difficult to be together in reality, but singers are always there, and sometimes people look at fans who follow singers in a strange way. I think it is. Haha Fans and singers who have always been together like that, as time goes by, the fans start to focus on other things in reality, and the distance in their hearts (I think this is expressed as a deer in the middle) will become farther away, and later on, the fans This situation of leaving will eventually come, but looking back over time, it seems to mean that during school days, the ones we were always with were our favorite idols at the time, and those idols were always in place.

New Jeans and TXT are the leaders of 4th Gen. Instead of AI concept, Edm concept, girl crush concept, their concepts are more suitable for youths, us( teenagers+ early 20s). Their concepts show our ages of youths' struggles and feelings. And I wanna them to maintain those concepts.

If you want more NewJeans to check out, I highly recommend you check out their live performances lately like at MAMA, MMA, and AAA. They've put in some new choreo and updated the vocal in Attention. For MMA, the camerawork was not great, so I highly recommend you watch the practice video on their official channel.

Here’s what I’ve noticed after watching multiple reactions!!
The actress (heeseo) is seen always recording the girls when they are dancing in both versions, but there is ONE time where she isn’t recording them while dancing, which was in Side B when the train passes by and they are on a parking lot or empty space. As the girls are dancing, heeseo is off to the side kinda far away, and even the girls aren’t facing her. I see this as heeseo finally letting go of the girls and moving on, which is seen as she walks away during that scene
Another thing that shows her “moving on” is when the camera is showing the girls backs in the tall grass, and the camera slowly moves away. The dance thing they do when they sway and lift their arms up reminds me of this gentle sleepy feeling, like they’re almost stretching. Even in the dance practice, if u ever react to it, the beginning and end is the same. It’s like they’re “falling asleep”(to me. I’m no dancer but 😀). I like to think that it represents this heeseo character is in this sort of “sleeping” state, dreaming about this kpop group being her actual best friends. And then in mv where they’re in the grass and their backs are shown, it’s like as if new jeans is staring ahead and moving on as the kpop group they are.
Then at the end, the girls are seen entering the room, same as before, all happy as if no time has passed. This shows that the even in the far future, u can still look behind on those memories u had with these groups bc no matter what they’ll always be there

Then I watched this just bc it was very catchy and I fell in love with it all. I’m glad Hybe is doing this concept for their new girl group as they are very very young. U may become obsessed with them and have a special place for them in ur heart but u must remember that u have ur own life to live. Ditto is a sweet song about a wanting someone to love you back. There are two sides to every relationship. In the MVs, Side A shows Heesoo's relationship with her idols. Side B shows NewJeans' relationship with their Bunny. I was struck by your interpretation of the fawn but also by how sad the members look when Heesoo leaves them at the end of Side B. Except she never really does, because we flip back to Side A and she is smiling and reminiscing. I'm new to Kpop but it seems obvious that idols worry a lot about fans not loving them back, or leaving them. I think the cast is there maybe as homage to the movie but more practically speaking, the girls are all wearing uniforms and we never see Heesoo's face, so the cast makes it easy for viewers to see she's not part of the group and also visually separates young and grown Heesoo. I really enjoyed your reaction, it's the best!

The girl recording they called her "Bban Heeso" or if pronounced "baneeso" sounds like "bunnies" right? which is the fandom is called bunnies. A fan perspective, watching and using kpop idols or music as their coping mechanismand then growing up and just looking back at the memories wgen we all feel happy like our old self enjoying kpop as an innocent child.
i saw a different version of story in a comment on a reaction vlog.....it's said that six of them are friends and they have an accident and the haesoo the one holding the camera is the only survivor that's why she had a cast on her arms......the guy knew what happen and he wants to help her go on with her life cause she cannot move on for missing her friends so much....the version is long😊😊
Great reaction. I disagree that it is sad. I believe it to be poignant, bittersweet, but with a happy ending (she moved on after successfully coping with a traumatic situation, explained later). In contrast OMG is tragic and sad, predicting that all of the members of NewJeans will eventually be institutionalized from mental breakdowns resulting from their traumatic experiences as Kpop Idols. Anyway, it is amazing that you pulled that meaning so quickly when so many reactors are just lost. But your background and experiences (being bullied, Kpop as a life raft in rough seas) no doubt helped. IMO, Ditto speaks about the potentially beneficial and potentially toxic parasocial relationship between fans and Kpop Idols. The good is that it can help a fan cope with a bad situation currently being experienced. The girl behind the camera (representing fans) had a cast, possibly from a car accident where she may have lost her parents (never shown), but nevertheless trying to cope with a traumatic experience. The facial expressions on the Boy AND her fellow classmates as she was videotaping gives me the impression that they all knew the girl was coping with a traumatic experience and were empathetic but having little idea of how to help her, but knew she needed help. She was comforted by imagining her favorite Kpop group members surrounding her with loving companionship. But eventually she had to face reality in order to move on (broke her camera, backed away from watching her Kpop group dance in front of the train tracks, moved from her imaginary relationship with her Kpop Idols to a real relationship with the Boy). Years later she put in the VHS, and all the happy memories (about how her Kpop group gave her a sense of loving support to help her cope with a traumatic situation) came rushing back. The downside is that if you stay in that imaginary world, your real world will be in ruins as you lose sight of your own necessary personal growth and the needed transition to adulthood with all the associated responsibilities that come with that.
This ditto reference to old korean movies with the same title. The synposis was kinda someona in the same school but different ages somehow can communication each other with kinda old radio if im not wrong. But new jeans used the handycam to communicate.. and i think new jeans are the which living in different era back then

So apparently if you watch side b first then side A you can understand it better. So there’s a movie call Ditto about two lovers and the boy gets in a car crash. The girl in the video as a cas on her hand because her and her friends got in a car accident and she’s the only one that survive. That’s why she’s recording everything while they are dancing in side b but in side A everyone is looking at her crazy because nobody is their because she’s imagining her friends that died. Also the cas says don’t die. The dear represents her friends watching over her, like a spirit guide. The boy represents moving on as he help her to move on from her friends death. That’s why at the end of side A she’s walking alone with her friend and side B her friends watching her walk alone.
I prefer this theory tbh.

In this case, I think the deer symbolizes innocence and the loss of it. In Side B, she looks down the hall to see the deer, then it cuts to her walking into the distance with the boy who seemed curious about her and she him, then cuts back to the deer leaving the hall. In the post clip, Minji erases the bottom half of Heesoo’s figure.
In the time of her innocence, she imagined friends she could relate to, and post innocence, her mind was filled with reality as she begins to be more connected to it.
It’s both realistic, symbolic, and bittersweet in many ways.

maybe im just a sad person, but my understanding of the video was a little darker than one’s obsession and comfort in kpop.
i saw it as Heeso was friends with NewJeans, but there must of been an accident and they all died except Heeso, which is why she has a cast on her arm. she lives through memories of them with her camera, but unfortunately its traumatic for her and not only that but everyone in her class probably thinks shes crazy. eventually, she learns how to move on and we see her drop her camera and even talks to the boy she has a crush on. in the end, shes an adult and shes watching old tapes again, except this time instead of it being an escape for her and holding her down, its a moment of happiness. then her memories (NewJeans) literally burst through the door and sit on the couch together and Heeso is able to reminisce one last moment with them peacefully. the moral of the story, life may have stopped for her friends, but that didnt mean it had to stop for her too.
but yeah, maybe im overthinking it. lol

Ehh making storyline videos isn't a bts only thing.... Ador creative director Min Heejin has been in the industry since first gen nd she has made many concepts like this even before bts existed... Hell even big bang, kara used to make 6 to 7 minute videos for their title track with storytelling....
It's more like bighit/hybe followed the others steps in making bts storyline in 2015 ...
