- I know I said that I loved a good theory, lore moment and MV that triggers my mind and makes it tingle but THAT was an experience! I don't think I've been this puzzled by a MV in a really long time? Because I can get away understanding or guessing a few things sometimes but here? It's almost like the more I was trying to unravel the story line and understanding it the more confused I got and so I fell into this infinite loop of questioning without any real ending nor destination? And that's freaks me out! The very first second of the MV kinda look innocent but the underlying creepy feeling cannot me washed away. Even when the song started and it sounded more upbeat, bright and lighthearted, I couldn't move on from that more sinister and creepy feeling that I got initially. The song almost tricks us into believing that everything is sunshine and rainbow when clearly it's not. I really thought that by watching the side B I would have some answers to my questions but I got bamboozled because I ended up with even more questions nsnsnssn This is an never ending mysterious loop that I can't get out of because now, I'm too invested and intrigued, it's haunting me almost! I need answers or I won't be able to move on. This mystery sticks with you and not necessarily in a pleasant way.
And because I was too invested in the story line and trying to decipher whatever the hell was going on here, I couldn't fully appreciate the song in itself. All I can tell you is that it was enjoyable to listen to; I really like how they stretch that last syllable of a word and their voices are also incredibly beautiful here! I'll have to see how the song grows on me in the future though.

If you search youtube channel ban haeso you will found what that girls filming, the girls is banheso (sound like rabbit in korea, like fandom names) so it's conflict between choosing the boy or newjeans, cause she banhaeso is love newjeans and fall in love with the boy, and ban heeso left the fandom cause she with the boy in the end, in the part 1 you will see the girl ban haeso watch the newjeans footage like the old fan watch old footage from their idol. If you remember the scene in part 2 when newjeans dance in the night and train in behind you see like ban haeso is so far away from newjeans not like in the beginning when newjeans dance in rooftop or in basketball place,
The dominant theory in Korea is this!
That recording girl means the fans (us). NewJeans means idol, and the boy means real life. We just love some singer or actor etc.. and slowly being far from our life(being neglected in our life), these mv shows that point. In side A, we were hanging out NewJeans and realize reality in last scene. And last scene's deer means fantasy. After side A, in side B, Heesoo understood the situation and decided to leave NewJeans(throw away the camera, ignore them and don't answer to Minji's phonecall). Finally, the deer(fantasy=our favorite celebrity) leaves away her. In last scene she grew up and visited home after a long time, but NewJeans are still young and visit her home together again. This means our favorite celebrity is still in everywhere and everytime, you just watch them and enjoy anytime you want. Just don't get addicted too seriously and lives our own life. And also Ban HeeSoo is bunnies(NewJeans's fandom name)! (pronunciation is similar ^_^)

To be quite honest the "commentary on K-pop" theory does nothing for me, but when I see it from the perspective of a lonely girl who lost her friends and can't move on I cry until my eyes get red.

The deer bit is interesting and aligns sort of to what you mean. I think I've heard it mean it's time to reflect and look at yourself at not others (potentially those that have left) to live your own life, instead of following: "i just got into uni" ditto, "i just got a good in this area" ditto, "i just got married" ditto., etc. Just a theory
For me it's the opposite .. the community on kpop theory seems more relatable and deeper than the car accident theory ..

The MV is about ban heeseo(bunnies) which is their fans, enjoying their time with new jeans, but then realising she(us) has to let them go and live her(our) life so she destroys the camera and goes on with her relationship with the guy on the MV. But the VHS recording is how us as fans can revisit our time with new jeans anytime in our life and be happy. Is basically an MV about parasocial behaviour just like their new OMG MV that they just dropped. Both MVs have easter eggs and references between them so i guess this comeback is about this same theme. Hoping is not too confusing. (this opinion is based on what the producers have said and my own understanding).
Also the deer is a symbol of inner change so the deer leaves when heeseo comes to terms about living her life and not being too obsessed about new jeans.

someone explained it to me like this. basically, heesoo is a fan of newjeans whom are idols, and then newjeans became her world. they also said that the deer was her youth that she missed out on. however, this guy she had a crush on, brought her back to reality, bcs apparently she has realized that whatever she does, she can never escape him. And so, on the last part of side b, she looks back at her old memories with newjeans as a grown woman.
The girl who’s filming them/ the outcast, her name Is Ban Heesoo, if you pronounce her name the Korean way/ with a Korean accent her name sounds like “Bunnies” which is the fandom name. The MV is about The idol and fan relationship & how both the idols and the fans rely on each other and are always there for each other but one day you just gotta accept the reality of life and move on with your responsibilities & grow up but you can always come back to your idols cause they will always be there for you

Past the surface level of the MV which is presented as a ghost story, with either Heeseo or the NJ being the ghost(s), “Ditto” is actually a pretty deep meta commentary about kpop idols, the industry and the parasocial nature of the fandom. When taken with their new Mv for “OMG” it’s a pretty genius meta commentary at that. Some very deep cutting criticisms and satire are implied. I wonder if Min Heejin and New Jeans will end up changing the more unhealthy side of industry in some way. Hopefully. The more they address it in the MVs, the more it will enter into popular conversation.
i dont think so, the kpop industry thrive from that sadly. the reason why fans having parasocial relationship to their idols is caused by the amount of fan service the industry serves
I lost my best friend two years ago and my mom recently Juanuary 1st during New Year, and the "whoo..." of the beginning it makes me feel so lonely, melancolic and nostalgic full of sadness and memories of good days, so yeah I think whole video represent how I feel when I think of them.
Ditto is a song about what we feel when we love someone and are not sure they’re returning our feelings. In the lyrics, New Jeans expose their feelings, using clear and explicit words, but they struggle to understand if the other part returns what they feel.

i was waiting for your reaction on this song, it is on repeat 24/7 Btw I saw a theory that states that Heeseo is actually Hanni because of the many similarities shown on the M/V. There’s an specific part on the M/V in which you can see Hanni with the same black uniform as Heeseo. Also it says that after the accident Hanni changed her name to Heeseo and moved to another school but still couldn’t forget her friends.

One theory is -It's about the parasocial relationship fans share with their favorite groups, to the world it's nothing but for them it's everything, from giving hope,strength, courage(since it's made for the fans as told by MHJ) . As it shows in the end she goes out with the boy and remember nj as a fond memory, like in the mv what the girl needed at that point was an escape and nj became one. But when she plays the vcr again after a long time, the girls come back. In a way nj will be there whenever you need them. It's beautiful, sad and again beautiful. I like how raw the mv is both aesthetic wise and message wise any fandom can relate to this.
There are other interpretations also which is connected to their storyline. This one is for the general public who is not much into the storyline.

A few things to add that I haven't seen in here yet:
Ban Heesoo is the camera woman, she has her own youtube channel that shows a lot of other things from here or related to it. 'she' is posting one or two videos every day.
The hallway scenes and a few others were locations used in at least 2 horror movies.

one thing that made it make more sense is that when you see the painted pinky and the empty cast it means she actually never physically interacted with them. in the videos they wrote on her cast and she painted one of the members nails but when she wakes up its her own nail painted and the cast is empty. it really solidified the main theories for me for some reason

Another way to interpret this mv (besides the parasocial relationship of idol/fans) is Ban Heeso, girl with recoder, probably got into an accident with her friends, newjeans. The reason the girls are seen in the vhc is because they were still alive then, after the accident, she lost them. Unable to cope with the lost, she created them in her head that they’re still alive (the parts of videos hinting that she’s recording nothing). By the end of side B, she begins to accept the loss and stopped hanging out with the illusions. At the end of B (start of A), she’s grown up and reminiscing her time with them knowing that those videos will be the only place she can see them again.
You should also watch some of the clips Heesoo recorded in her own TH-cam channel Ban Heesoo.
Actually the girl who is filming them (ban hesseo) she had her own youtube channel where she post their clips and hints about their next comeback 🙂
Cool dance moves
I can simplify it for you. Kpop fans will often substitute idols for real friends. Sometimes its a deep dependency and then sometimes merely a temporary escape. Side B shows the adult has returned to watch the old tapes of NewJeans perhaps because she suffered another lonely time in her life as an adult. Then the girls will watch a movie with her as an adult. I'm not sure if the video producer intended for the adult to portray having a typical dependency as any normal person might fall victim to or is actually mentally ill. Perhaps they define the dependency as a type of mental illness I'm not sure. I am sure many fans are addicted and make a life substitution. Some have substituted idols for real friends. For some people that are terribly lonely its nice they have some kind of togetherness. But for other people that should be carrying on with life the dependency is a bad thing and they need a visit from a deer to wake them up. I make the most sense of the video when I pretend the deer is there to tell her snap out of her trance. Then she does. On one last note I almost feel the girls problem leans towards mental illness only because the part in the MV that shows her quitting her addiction then her cell phone rings and the caller in Minji from the GG. That sort of added a twist I wasn't expecting.
If you’re a dark and gloomy person that’s how you would interpret this MV as oppose to a positive and cheerful person. Like the Rorschach inkblot test. That’s the closest thing I can think of. My take is this is a coming of age MV. Teen, idol fan/imaginary friends, moving on to falling in love and reliving the time she had when she was younger and in one with NJ.
Theory- the girl has a cast on her arm and she keeps on seeing a deer which means that she and newjeans were actually friends but because of the deer they got into a car accident and in the beginning of the side B music video u can clearly see the girl watching clips of newjeans on the tv which clearly means that she wasnt imagining it all and her videotaping newjeans even after they did in the accident and she survived shows her coping mechanism of imagining that theyre still there with her and she has "a survivor's guilt" also and the dude that u see in the mv is the one who helps her and helps her cope with it
I think if you go back and set aside trying to "solve" the MV and explore how you feel when you hear the song juxtaposed to the images, in both MVs, I think that will help you immensely with your puzzle. From my experience, the Ditto MVs were emotional, so if one were to come to it objectively, you're trying to fit what you're seeing to actual facts. But nothing was established as fact so what you're seeing is subjective, open to interpretation. Everyone viewing the MV has their own interpretation, yours will be as "good" as anyone else.

I think the mvs has 2 level of meanings.
Point of view 1: the recording girl is the sole survivor after an accident, and her friends (newjeans) didn't survive. The deer could be the reason of the incident. Side A and B is there about mourning. In Side A she take shelter in her memories but aleniate herself from others by doing this. It's joy but also sadenees and destructive for her. In Side B she decide to let go, to flee this memories and take hapiness in others (the boy) to pass throw it. And at the end, now a adult she can at last look at this memories with more joy without destruct herself in the process.
Point of view 2: the recording girl impersonate the bunnies (ban hee soo ressemble bunnies and we can see a bunnie in the cassettes box ) , and the girl coulb be bullied, or depressing, and chearch happiness in other ways : kpop. Side A and B is there about take pleasure in kpop but not at the cost of everything else and reality.

for me the "woo woo" part is like a representative of crying? if that makes sense. same as in somi xoxo the same part too, when "woo woo" part too it sounds so sad and haunting like crying sounds from a heartbroken person. that's my opinion though

I won’t say too much until after you seen the OMG video , which does link to this one. For now here are some mysteries to keep an eye on. Why do we never see Hesso’s face ? Why do they make a point to show Hesso’s cast throughout the video? Why is Hanni and Hesso the only girls wearing black on the rain scene ? Hanni is talking to the cat that makes a few appearances in the video.. why is that? Hesso was ignoring a phone call while she was crying in a corner..who was calling ? The girls are dancing in white hospital gowns in a few scenes … is that significant ? Everyone has their theories but the feeling you get after listening to this is unsettling , sadness , haunting etc… New Jeans said themselves that this was a sad song , so I think the darker theories may be more accurate.

Actually there are several interpretation of the MV out there. But from what I gather, first of all, New Jeans was real when she ain't wearing cast at the times (during the scene she filming them walking into her perhaps club room in the ending of Side B, there is a glimpse of Hee Soo holding the camrecorder but without the cast yet).
Judging from the difference in blazer (New Jeans wear brown? whereas thebrest of student including Hee Soo wear blue), I'm not sure how korean school works there, but I guess they wear different color of uniform according to season, perhaps they wear brown in Winter Spring season, then blue uniform in Summer Autumn season. The reason I make such guesses is that New Jeans in the footage wear a lot warmer clothes while for most blue color uniform classmate seem like happening during summer season.
So this lead to my theory of New Jeans and Hee Soo (the camrecording girl who keep called by this name in the recording footage) know each other during last Winter/Spring season when New Jeans still working on their choreography and so perhaps that's why they ask Hee Soo who is from recording club to help recording their dance and all these VHS footage is left in this cinematography club room where grown up Hee Soo comes back and revisit her memories in beginning of Side A and ending of Side B.

There is a detail of her friends draw on her cast but the drawing didn't exist in most of the scene, and one of the thing write on her cast if you know korean means "Don't Die".
So the MV is split into side A and side B just like the VHS footage did, and side A is the process of Hee Soo falling into her fantasy and wanting to believe her friends still alive so she give up her umbrella and walk with them under rain. Whereas Side B is the process of Hee Soo begin to recover from her hallucination by rejecting New Jeans on that raining scene and walk away with her umbrella, drop her camrecorder from rooftop and ignore her friends call. The reason she manage to recover is due to that Boy even tho they never elaborate on that part since that's not the main focus of this hallucination except Hee Soo has an eye on him and walk with him leaving this fantasy behind in the final scene.

I like the theory that NJs are imagine/passed away friends and the MV is about Heeseo- the lonely deer, moving on from it (in side B). Because of all the chill feelings and soundtracks from the MV.

Well, in contrast to the "OMG" video, the "fan/idol" theory makes even more sense. It's not about making "loving your idol" a bad thing, but how it has to be a healthy "relationship" in life and don't keep you away from real life. Even if it is not a direct message, it's a very nice and kind message to both fans and idols.
