      If your intrested in VM's and how this works google "VFIO", it's mainly used by Linux users that want to run windows games in a virtual machine.
      This kind of tech I suspect is also being used by the services that want to make 'game streaming' a thing, the games are run in VM's and the output is pumped netflix style back to the user.

      Does 3900x support virtualization?

    • @ColdLunaris
      @ColdLunaris 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@endsemiscoming7204 Yes, alltough AMD doesn't call it VT-d and VT-x. They call it AMD-Vi and AMD-V. I think all Ryzen CPU's support it, even the lower end ones, and Threadripper and EPYC definitely supports it. Just make sure your motherboard chipset supports it also. With AMD it's not really a question if your CPU can virtualize, but if your motherboard can. Some motherboards support only AMD-V and not AMD-Vi, meaning that you can run virtual machines, but you cannot pass through PCIe devices like a GPU to your VM, so if you're doing this for gaming, make sure both your CPU and motherboard support AMD-V, AMD-Vi and IOMMU.

  • @DirtPoorWargamer
    @DirtPoorWargamer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    I kind of want to use this to set up a tower with 7 machines on it. One machine that uses everything, two that split it in half, and four that also split everything evenly. Boot the virtual machines that meet your current needs. Could you imagine being able to support 4 people on one machine for a LAN party?

    • @TheKyshu
      @TheKyshu 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Wells That would 1. be a nightmare to configure, and 2. run very poorly, as essentially you have the 4 gaming VMs, plus 3 "management" operating systems. Linux doesn't have a lot of overhead, but there still is some. Not sure how well it would run, or even if it would run at all due to several VMs accessing the same graphics card, I don't think it works that way as in this video, each graphics card is passed through to a single VM, and they are not split in half.
      A better idea would probably be to get 4 dedicated graphics cards, run 4 VMs, assign a card to each VM and then have the onboard GPU (you can configure the BIOS to use that as output) run the management VM, in this case unRAID (?). It'd be kinda expensive though, as you need a motherboard that supports 4 graphics cards, a CPU powerful enough to run everything at acceptable speeds AND you need the 4 graphics cards. I don't know if you need 4 of the same type of card for this kind of scenario, maybe just have everyone bring their own card? Like BYOGPU? :D

    • @firefoxx04
      @firefoxx04 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Wells you cannot share the GPU between multiple VMs.. and by that I mean only one VM can have a GPU passed through. That is the only way the VM will game with decent performance.
      regular VM graphics can be shared among the VMs but it will not have anything close to gaming caliber graphics.

    • @DirtPoorWargamer
      @DirtPoorWargamer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *****
      You aren't running all 7 at the same time. If you're running the 4 slower Computers, the faster 3 aren't on. If you're running the fastest one, the other 6 aren't on. Yeah, you'd need 4 GPUs to do this properly, but that means the fast machine will have 4-way SLI (assuming that can be virtualized), and the 2 mid speed rigs will have 2-way.
      BYOGPU could work with this (SLI may be wonky though), although I don't know how many people would take apart their computer to avoid bringing the tower. I would rather have this be a permanent machine with the same card in each slot. Then you only need to worry about one tower for up to 4 people, and can make use of more of the machine's power if you have fewer.

    • @DirtPoorWargamer
      @DirtPoorWargamer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Sirianni
      The only GPU sharing going on in the configuration I'm proposing is by machines that operate on a mutually exclusive basis. The 4-way SLI machine doesn't run at the same time as the 4 single GPU machines, none of which runs at the same time as the 2 2-way SLI machines.

    • @BNAU
      @BNAU 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Wells The one problem with that is the cpu that you need to run.
      You can easily find a motherboard supporting 4 way sli and 4 gpu's via pcie but you're gonna need a cpu with at least 12/16 cores if you want to game on it in any way or form. Using 3 here is a stretch already, you saw the 20% decrease in fps. But going from 3 to 2 cores per VM, you're gonna be looking at a drastic decrease in the region of 60% of the 3 core VM's performance especially running newer DX10 or 11 games.
      The only such cores that currently exist would be the top grade skylake processors that were recently released but i'm not sure they're compatible with this kind of unraid linux vm set up. Especially when its performance relies on hyper threading and taking only 3 cores from that kind of cpu will make things difficult at the least.
      Other than that you also have to consider heat management/cooling. A reference card of any sort (let's just say the 980ti that Linus threw in) runs at around 70-80 under load. Even on the best motherboards that can actually fit 4 gpu's you're gonna be putting them right against each other like in this one.
      Since you can't watercool in such a set up, nor use anything other than reference cards you're going to be looking at alot of heat that any amount of default case fans or cooling is just not going to cut it. I don't know about you but if i had 4 980ti's i would really REALLY hate to burn them all out.
      Also the server VM that Linus used in this video REQUIRES different usb peripherals or it doesn't work. I just tried to put two razer blackwidows (one for each) and its so hard to program both to work individually. If Linus can't figure out how to do it i don't think it can be done.
      Basically i think that as of now, the technology available to the consumer market pretty much limits us to a dual vm tower as the absolute maximum if you want to retain any kind of performance over both of them. Heat, Compatibility and Performance issues (pretty much it).

    I need this video, but with today’s technology!With the competitiveness of AMD, the power of both CPUs/GPUs, and the scarce supply of hardware this idea could be a good solution for couples who want to game together but don’t want to buy/build separate rigs.

    • @HarryLostOne
      @HarryLostOne 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      why would a couple want to game together but not do it in a different pc ? Its like wanting to go on the toilet at the same time, it works if the toilet is big enough, but.....why ???? It's a cool concept sure, but the ONLY one that can benefit from it, its someone who really struggles with space (which is still absurd since you can build on minitower a quite strong pc).
      Even if its a money issue, the fact that you will need 2+ gpus on this specific rig, it just doesnt save enough for the trouble, all the parts except gpu can be found on good prices (gamingwise). I'm pretty sure that 2 pcs are extremely better (specially long term) than do all these stuff to get ..... 1.5 pc. Not even mentioning how much of a pain in the ass would be if one pc is underperforming for whatever reason.

    Wow, still using nvidia, they must have payed you a lot to promote only their stuff and not AMD's virtual GPU. Witch actually is much better as it is not software emulated as this thing but it's hardware virtualized, yes it is firepro only for now but I tried it and works great!

      You could have used radeons too, gcn are very capable cards and i really don't get it why do you use only nvidia products for you builds. Star wars battlefront runs best on AMDs, you said it, so why testing it with nvidias? For me it's none sense.
      Yes you are right, this is not actual visualization but PCI passtrough, I actually got confused. As I said amd's virtualisation solution it's only for firepros but it's hardware based so you could use the saders of one or more gpus on many virtual machines or external devices with great scalabitily. Thats sick. Hope they will implement that on cunsumer cards.
      Again I hope to see more flexibility for the hardware you advertise in future, seeing you using only nvidias might make people think you are not so independent as you appear.

    • @megapro125
      @megapro125 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vlad Puriy couldn't you just put more than 4 gpus in your system? remember that you wouldn't be using them in sli or cf so I don't know if the limit of 4 gpus still applies without interconnecting them. there are mainboards with more than 4 pcie slots since some expansion cards other than gpus can use them too. The only thing that maybe could be a problem are the pcie lanes of the xeon then.

    Thats cool, another Video shows a similar setup with Citrix XEN, it was some years ago, and it was far more complicated.
    But the Idea is cool, especially for Linux Freaks like me.
    Question: Could you compare different Virtual Software and Hypervisors, I would love to see witch one has the most performance, on that list: Linux KVM (that you use in this video) XEN, VirtualBox and VMWare.

      +Toxicity1987 Im an IT systems admin and I use Virtualbox/VMWare/ and Hyper-V. Why do you say Hyper V sucks? Because its not a bare metal VM? Maybe that was the case years ago, but today if your using something like Windows Server 2012 the difference will not be noticeable.

    • @Toxicity1987
      @Toxicity1987 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Xyos212 Windows Server 2012 is still bloatware which eats too much system resources for itself, what need it again to run without any service? 1GB of RAM? It's still load a GUI (which is bullshit on a Server) and to many services on its own.
      If MS don't make a dedicated HyperV server which is minimalistic so as it should be, it is and remains the worst Hypervisor on the market.

    • @Xyos212
      @Xyos212 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Toxicity1987 That's silly in todays modern world, where servers have from 128gb of RAM to 1 terabyte of ram, with CPU's in servers with dozens of cores spread over multiple CPU's....

    The hidden treasure of this video, which ironically Linus forgets to mention, is the fact that you can actually run AAA games within a Linux ecosystem. Yes, it needs a Windows VM but this is, for now, an acceptable workaround to being required to run Windows natively in order to play some of my favorite current games (those I want are always the ones that will likely never have native Linux compatibility). You don't have to set it up in a "one computer/two gamers" type of way and this is possible with more than just Lime-O. For those interested, look into PCI passthrough via VT-d and IOMMU. There have been several handy guides published in the last few months.

  • @Tucagodofmusic
    @Tucagodofmusic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    you and whoever you share this PC with could potentially split
    the price by going halves in the CPU, PSU, ram, MOBO, case, etc.
    meaning that you only pay full price for your individual graphics cards.
    that means you can get top of the range everything!
    or make a dual family computer setup.
    great idea budget-wise!!!

      +Wolfstorm33 Keep in mind that he's using an 3 - 3.5 ghz 8 core cpu that costs almost 3 times as much as a 4 - 4.2 ghz 4 core 6700k. I'm not sure you would actually end up saving much.
      Also, the VM that he benchmarked at the end was only using 3 cores. He didn't say why but I would guess it would be due to assigning one to run the VM software. I'm not sure if you could even plug in a USB device without assigning it to 1 of the VMs.
      It's an interesting idea but I have my doubts about whether it would ever be worth doing.

  • @readyrepairs
    @readyrepairs 8 ปีที่แล้ว +159

    couldnt this be done without the unraid? just enable all the virtualization features - and run a second OS in in virtual box etc etc - give it half the resources... cores... ram... etc - dedicate one gpu to it... and make it run full screen on the second monitor? give it the correct USB devices and be done? yes. the answer is yes. and then you dont have to buy some useless (for this situation) copy of some linux garbage.

    • @readyrepairs
      @readyrepairs 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      +readyrepairs also you wouldnt need to wait for unraid... and you wouldnt have to boot both machines if you didnt want to... and you wouldnt be relying on a USB drive that could be corrupted or pulled/knocked out by a child/pet... this is stupid Linus. You know this is stupid. Did Unraid pay you or something? I expect so much more of you.

    • @J0nDaFr3aK
      @J0nDaFr3aK 8 ปีที่แล้ว +84

      +readyrepairs i don't know if that would work. a software based vm would be much slower and you'd need pci passthrough drivers to get the most out of a discrete gpu and said drivers are not that stable. not to say that your vm would have to share resources with your hosting os. virtual box uses as many cores as you want it to, but not exclusively, which means your os would still use them and make your vm slower.. in spite of its cost, this solution is closer to the machine's hardware and will get better results

    this is so much better than split-screen! LAN gaming with a single motherboard cuts out the most expensive components (case+PSU+CPU+RAM) and only requires you buying 2 GPUs and 2 monitors (I already have 2 monitors) so this could actually be hella awesome for having a friend over to play games! Dang, I might do this with my old tower when I upgrade since it already has 2 GTX 760s in SLI... yeah, this is definitely a fun thing I hope I can do!

    Just wondering how this does with games with built in anti-cheat? A lot of blizzard games running warden will flag clients running on virtualized machines as bots. does anyone know if warden still functions in this way? Will a setup like this still be flagged?

      +Saelaniify Not really, since the OS is virtualized on a much lower level unlike VMWare. We use a similar setup for work here and there's no problems with games that has Anti-Virtualization tech.

    • @TheColumna1
      @TheColumna1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Ryzen does support them, they just have different names, I believe the name for PCI passthrough is AMD-Vi and the virtualization is AMD-V or AMD-VTx or something. Although different motherboards put these options in different places, and some don't even support it.

    I'm running a 3-headed linux machine at home for light gaming (Warcraft III, Minecraft, Crysis, etc.). Many linux distributions have multiseat support built in, and it really works! 90% of the time. But it's also a headache. I get seats that won't wake up from sleep, seats that lock randomly and can only be unlocked from terminal, and some games that take a lot of tinkering to allow multiple users to run them at the same time. I'm thinking about transitioning to something like this virtualized setup in the video, but I'm torn because I hate the idea of installing and running multiple instances of the OS, especially multiple Windows instances. I'm already maxxing out the 16GB RAM right now!

  • @rajeshSimpleton

    For anyone who is thinking of doing this in an existing Host - The host + VMM combination needs PCI-E , more specifically, Physical GPU passthrough support.
    Windows host + Oracle VBox - No
    Windows host + VMPlayer - No
    Windows Client OS + Hyper-v - No
    From the little online reading I did, only Windows Server editions seem to support this, with Hyper-V.
    Haven't done any testing / checks on other non-Windows OS variants though

    There are a lot of comments, and obviously I didn't read any single one of them, but, surprisingly, among the ones I've read, everyone's talking about "performance per dollar" (AMD v NVidia, basically) and nobody's talking about performance PER WATT... an AMD set (FX + 2x Radeon) would skyrocket the power needs, and you'll basically need a bigger power supply.
    According to eXtreme Power Supply calculator, these are the numbers:
    i7-4790k + 2x 8GB DDR3 + 2x GTX970 + 2x SSD + 2x DVD-RW + 2 USB devices + 2x mouse + 2x keyboard + 1x Corsair H110i GTX = 612W
    AMD FX 9590 + 2x 8GB DDR3 + 2x R9-290 + 2x SSD + 2x DVD-RW + 2 USB devices + 2x mouse + 2x keyboard + 1x Corsair H110i GTX = 937W
    So with Intel+NVidia you're basically tight with a 650W 80+ power supply, but with AMD you'd be tight with a 1000W power supply. What you save in processor and graphics card, you'd invest in power supply and electric bill xD

    • @Matlockization
      @Matlockization 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay did a review on the most expensive component vs the cheapest with the highest power draw and it turned out the higher power draw was cheaper to run in the end because you pay a lot more the expensive component. Why not use a RX 460, 470 or 480 ?

    • @Seijakukun
      @Seijakukun 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's a matter of "how much money will it cost me to run my rig all year", but "am I saving by buying more expensive and better performance components instead of buying a 1000w power supply, a cooler for dissipating all that heat and a case to fit all that?".
      That's basically what I meant. Intel wins this generation (I'm talking about since the Core2's) because it offers same performance in exchange of less power requirements and less heat, thus, smaller (and cheaper?) cases, fans and power supplies.
      Am I clear now? I'm not very good at explaining the concepts in my head haha
