      Plex, look it up

    • @JReinhoud
      @JReinhoud 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      indeed, Plex is the most simple way to do this. Almost for any platform an client app and really easy to setup. Hardware choice is just how many streamers add once you want, but also limited by your upload speed. Keep in mind that every codec or subtitle that isnt supported by the client will result in transcoding by your server. So even if the client like a new Samsung tv is supporting the video and audio codec, if the subtitle isnt supported, it will transcode and take more resources from your server. So the best way is to use the most common codecs and subtitles in your videos. x265 safes a lot of harddisk space compared to x264 but if a client doesnt support it, it will take up almost all resources on a low end server. I use a HP microserver gen 8 G1610T for this with xpenology, but upgraded the cpu with an Intel Xeon E3-1265l v2 and memory to 16GB to get 2 smooth streams ad once. Didn't try 2 x265 streams transcoding though, but dont think it can. If you want to use x265 best way to go, is hardware in your server that supports x265 natively (cpu or gpu), that way transcoding doesnt need that much resources.

    You could have built six individual computers that could have done the job much cheaper plus one for LAN Storage. One of the things I never could convince my corporation was that buying one machine to cover all people (i.e. printers etc) means when it goes down all people go down. My corporation would buy a $1000 laser printer to cover 6 people when it could have bought 6 ea $100 dollar lasers to do the same job. The $1000 laser's workload would wear it out fast and it was down a lot, plus we all had to get up and walk over the where the printer was to get our work, many times standing in line. If all had individual printers we would not have had to get up so much and the duty cycle of the printer would have been reasonable, plus you could replace each printer individually if one was giving trouble. Plus, with printer sharing, if one went down that person could use some elses till he got theirs fixed or replaced.

    Yuup, I work in professional AV, DisplayPort is a pain. The only leg up it has over HDMI is the connector with the retention.
    HDMI works reliably up to 15m and usually takes 25m depending on the device.
    Anything beyond that is fibreoptic DVI or HDBaseT (That Graphics Card with the RJ45 ports) territory.

    • @GervasitorSpaceman67
      @GervasitorSpaceman67 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Oh shit ! This got me an idea ! I don't know about the latency, but if they used HDMI over ethernet in something like this, they could have the server running the VMs directly in the server room. This would allow them to connect directly to their NAS, and the only thing they would need is a fiber optic USB 3.0 cable for peripherals and some ethernet cables for displays.
      I mean unless the latency of HDMI over ethernet sucks, this would definitely be the next step for this project. There would be quite a lot of cables to route but if you route them through the walls you just have HDMI plugs and a USB 3 port with a powered hub at your station.
      Linus if you don't do this I'll give up on buying a car and I'll do it for you !

  • @timt7940

    Linus, love the series just because of the pure insanity (and joy) of nerdy experimentation... Can you please redo this with an Epyc 7742 or TR 3990x?
    If you were deploying this in a production environment, ideally you'd want a minimum of 3 servers for features such as quorate, HA, QoS, live migration, load distribution, & redundancy... Then you'd be well over $100K like you wanted ;) Also, you'd want everything kept locked securely inside the server room (because $30K+ servers will grow legs) and use something like HDBaseT to stream A/V and USB over CAT 6/6a to each editor at near 0 latency. Maybe if some day USB C (with alt mode) over CAT 6a/7/8 becomes a reality, a USB hub at each desk will be all that's needed.
    To improve performance, have you tried defining shared storage for temporary workspace on the Unraid server itself so that the majority of network traffic stays on the server during editing? Doing so would limit the need to go across the physical network to retrieve data. Something else you should look at is defining the VMs to be NUMA aware so that the hypervisor limits unnecessary memory allocations & vCPU assignments across NUMA boundaries.
