The history in Vinland Saga is quite accurate, except for some story beats. Canute, for example, actually was in England during this time fighting in the war for his father. He was nothing like the Canute in the manga though, he spent his childhood being trained by the Jomsvikings and Thorkell!

  • @John-lo2wn

The Christian vs Norse god stuff was super accurate. The Norse believed that the gods actually helped in battle and when the Christian’s won a series of victories, a bunch converted because it proved to them the Christian god was mightier.

      @ANunes06 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@arawn1061 It can *kind of* be extrapolated from Christian Missionary Strategies in the region, which are fairly well known. Missionaries told the Christian story as a continuation of the Norse stories. Conveniently, Ragnarok ends with the dawning of a new age. A single man and a single woman emerge from the safety of Yggdrasil and repopulate the earth. Missionaries just let them continue to believe in their gods, but "explained" that "Ragnarok happened many years ago and we are already in the New Age. Here's the story of what has happened since then. This Jesus guy was pretty cool, and we have some pretty dope shit."
So it's not hard to imagine these Vikings' general belief structure. Odin was BASED but he's long dead. All the Old Gods are dead. BUT there's a new god in town.
Missionaries didn't care overmuch about ensuring pure dogmatic accuracy, as long as tribute was paid and people called themselves Christians.

It´s basicly like this: The characters were all more or less real, and the big historical events we are shown happened. But the the two don´t necessarilly belong together in real history. So Yukimura have taken characters from these famous stories of norse exploration (Vinland and Greenland Sagas and the Saga of Erik the red) and put them in a slightly different historical context in order to fit the story he want to tell with them. And it works because teh characters are essenially blank slates in the real sagas anyway.

Glad you're enjoying Vinland Saga Daniel! Just to piggyback on your "is this actual history?" question. You are correct in what you have heard, the large historical beats are accurate. King Sweyn (Sveinn, like, Sv-ei-nnn) also known as Sweyn Forkbeard in the 11cen. launched a massive invasion of England for the right to be its King (after becoming the King of both Denmark and Norway). Essentially he's Viking Napoleon, forging a massive Viking Sea Empire. Historically it has no real name, but Historians have dubbed it the NORTH SEA EMPIRE. This YEAAARS after the first invasions of Anglo-Saxon England (around 865) by THE GREAT HEATHEN ARMY, which legend says was led by the three sons of Ragnar Lothbrok (which you may know as the protag from the TV Show Vikings).

I left a question on your last video and just wanted to ask about how you interpreted a particular scene.
In reference to Thors telling Thorfinn that it's not okay to hurt people, you said it's something like 'Thors dumping his past trauma on his son' and then read the dialogue from the book and heavily emphasized words that weren't highlighted.
I just found it kind of odd. I saw it as Thors getting on his knees to be level with his son, holding him, and calmly telling him that it isn't okay to hurt others.
I don't think that's Thors dumping his trauma on his son. And it's a pretty respectable approach given that all Thors knows is that Thorfinn broke a kids arm and now he's gone into an off limits area and pulled out a knife. I think most parents would probably shout at their kid if they saw that. But not Thors.

I like your narrator voice, but your dog barking sounded like Christopher Walken. That made me very happy.

I can't add anything to the actual topic as I haven't read Vinland Saga and couldn't find a copy to read (my library is awful and doesn't have it). But I need to say I am consistently amazed by how sturdy your desk is. You stab it with at least one sword in every video basically and it still hasn't caved in.

I feel like the amount of blades Daniel pulled out here, is to compensate for teh amount of weaponry the guest host of fantasy news showed.
Anyways; great video, you got me back into vinland saga

Quite a few people in the fanbase believe Thorkell is based on the tale of 1 viking holding off 15000 British soldies on a bridge all on his own , with the British soldiers not being able to do anything to him , they had to stab him from below the floorboards .

Love that you're loving Vinland Saga! For a fun fact, since you're a big fan of Thorkell, is that he is based on a real person! He is very poorly attested in the historical records, but "Thorkell the Tall" is named in at least one document detailing the Danish conquest of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms (the idea of the English isnt really consolidated just yet and really only becomes more realized closer to 1066 in opposition to the Normans).

I hope this series will go slow enough for season 2 to release before we get to that content. If not, it'll be a nice post-season binge. Manga content brought me to the channel, Dan kept me here.

So I was one those people who wondered should I read vinland saga after where the anime stops and I finally gave it a shot. Finished the whole series up to chapter 196 in one weekend, would whole heartedly recommend to anyone on the fence! Thorfinn is now one of my all time fave protagonists :)

Great Video Daniel as both a massive Vinland Saga and Berserk fan. Its such a joy seeing these video's on your channel.. Maybe a recommendation after Berserk and Vinland Saga... I personaly would love love love, If you gave Space Brothers (Uchuu Kyoudai) a chance. Its about person how lost his job and tries become a astronaut. Goes very realistically into what it takes becomming a astronaut and also gives great life lessons about not losing hope, when you are older person.
So yeah enjoying these video's so much. And looking forward to them in the future.

I think that more than a worlbuilding "Vikings/Nords being fascinated with the Romans", this is more "Askeladd being very knowledgable of Romans" character set up.
Hell, he wears Roman armor (which is not something you just find lying around a couple centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire), has a Roman name in addition to his Nordic one, knows people with Roman names and, possibly, fights using a Roman gladius (not sure there).
On the same character, we are now at the point where we know the Askeladd willingly lives and collaborates with those he hates, living away from those he 'cares' about, all in the name of a bloody goal and willing to dirty his hands to achieve it.
The parallels with Thorfinn couldn't be any harder :)
I remember at this point thinking "Did Askeladd spare/mentor" Thorfinn because he sees himself in him? Given also that his second in command commented on him having a "weird" trust in Thorfinn during the forest-fire scheme.

Have you read the Saxon chronicles by Bernard Cornwell? It follows a Saxon who was abducted by Danes as a child and raised as a Dane, it’s set during the time of Alfred the great. They’re some of the best historical fiction I’ve ever read.

He’s doing both since they were 1 and 2 but you can definitely tell he’s not really feeling Chainsaw Man. Doesn’t want to shit on it since it’s not really his style but he’s a lot higher on Vinland and Berserk.
