actually legit excited for you to do a full review of berserk if you somehow found the time. its a different medium obviously so not sure if their is much in it for you to go out on a limb for but even for a manga it has some surprising literary merit in terms of theme, tone, and of course artwork.
I thought Daniel was going to say: I've talked a lot about the Wheel of Time on this channel and now I'm realizing I don't love it as much as I thought I did lmaoooo
I'm legitimately happy you decided to pick up Berserk again. There's still the real chance that it doesn't resonate for you, and that's perfectly ok, but hopefully you'll at least see what the hype is about. And hey, if nothing else you get to look at some gorgeous artwork along the way
Looking back I’ve always been drawn to fantasy, but since finding you and the other world hoppers I feel like I’ve developed a more complex understanding of the genre. The one thing I used to think about fantasy in general that makes me cringe a bit now: “ fantasy is all the same-it’s stagnant.” Ouch-- i hate to even type that in your comments section, lest I invite the wrath of the channel. I had a very basic idea of fantasy in general -the kind of basic idea that outsiders to the genre often have-because I hadn’t given myself a chance to see the nuances yet. I can assure you I’m over that now . I still have so much more to read ( because each of these books is like 600-800 pages, and I’m not the fastest reader out there) but I do feel like I’m “educating” myself on the nuances of the genre, and my appreciation for it is maturing. Your channel is a big part of that, so thank you-you’re making me a better book nerd, and by extension a better writer, and I deeply appreciate that .
I love it when people can own up to their mistakes! Even if I don't agree with the person it makes me respect them so much! Thanks Daniel for making this wonderful content and just being a great guy!
Bro, I'm happy you will continue with the manga. It gets much better later and stuff will get explanations. This is a good read. Hoping for an update on the review soon :D! The old Anime is 25 eps and is worth a watch to ^^ Just sad that it ended when the story starts to begin.
Yeah the first part of Berserk(Blackswordsman Arc) which you reviewed is actually in the future. Once you get to the Golden Age which is considered to be the best arc of Berserk it actually puts the first part into context. Golden Age is basically the backstory for the Guts you are reading in the first volume. Golden Age has some of the best character development and exploration of themes I've every read in any medium. It will make you understand why he is such an edgelord in the first volume. Was excited to see you picked it up tho.
It's not exactly obvious, but, with all of its tragic elements, Kingkiller seems to me like a villain origin story (it's literally a monologue). The wish-fulfillment, power fantasy elements are part of it's setup. I don't know if Rothfuss is going to do what I would do with the story, but if he does ...
I’m so glad you’re going to read more of Berserk! I also like both animated series if you have the time- though make sure to watch it with subtitles in the original language
Finally gained some respect for this dude. Thought he seemed angsty and too biased in earlier videos. He’s matured quite well, and I praise him for recognizing his previous faults. Hats off mate!
I'm so glad you are revisiting Berserk. It's one of the best fantasy manga out there and it's STILL ongoing XDD Another fantasy manga fav I'd like to recommend is Magic Knight Rayearth. It's short and sweet. Only 6 volumes (though I'm sure you can get all of them in one collected volume from Dark Horse). Great characters, great twists, great art. Love it love it love it.
>It's one of the best fantasy manga out there That's good! >and it's STILL ongoing That's bad... >But it comes with free frogurt! That's good! >The frogurt contains potassium benzoate ... :|
@@vos7619 Last year only 2 chapters were published and the final arc isn't even in sight. Kento Miura prefers to work on his other series like Duranki so Berserk will probably never end.
Kind of surprised this and the forsaken, darkest timeline review aren't on the Berserk playlist. Glad to have been here over the years to see the full journey. Also really glad the '97 anime pretty much glosses over Black Swordsman review in one episode. Speaking of the '97 anime, it introduced the world to Guts' Theme which is fantastic. :D
Happy to hear you're revisiting Berserk, from volume 4 onward it becomes quite a bit different in its tone and its later chapters give plenty of context to the first 3 volumes. Also if you'll ever decide to review any other manga, I'd highly recommend Vinland Saga. It has some amazing character development and I feel like its first chapters are tonally way more in your ballpark, with a higher chance to hook you in right off the bat.
Thank you for revisiting Berserk. Manga and comics is a weird medium to get into, because unlike books, you can see the author grow and get better in the same story they started with. The first couple volumes of berserk reflect a Muira that doesnt know where he wants to take the story yet. I look forward to your eventual thoughts on it!
Oh I really like you touched this topic of what was in the past is not necessary now. I have said a lot of things in my past videos, even loved a lot of books I now have no love for anymore but people do tend to bring it up. Like opinions change, people grow! Great video!
What a great idea for a video. I'd like to see this become a Thing. I like it's healthy for people to look back and evaluate mistakes they've made or just how they've grown and changed. Good on you for modeling that process.
The first video I ever saw of yours was the Anomander vs Geralt one, and I was like "Geralt gets his ass beat by Vilgefortz, how the hell is he beating Rake?"
Please consider reading The Broken Sword by Poul Anderson. Wonderfully dark, beautifully written and feeling like an ancient Norse tale while it actually came out the same year as The Fellowship of the Ring. A true forgotten classic.
7 -8 years ago (geez this doesn't help me feel that the time isn't passing) my roommate was reading The Way of Kings. She was dating another fellow book nerd and they'd swapped favorites. When I saw the book and she started talking about it, I said "See that is the kind of book I'll never read". Today, Stormlight is my favorite. Also YAY PIPS!
It's been really cool to see your channel evolve, grow, and get better over the past couple years - mistakes are okay, and it's even cooler to acknowledge them and go forward :)
As a Berserk fan I am so happy to welcom a fellow struggler and as a subscriber I am so happy with the amount of pride you put in your work. I've actually had a really funny time with this lol. I've been watching your content for years. I stopped for a few months, then came back and saw you watch Attack on Titan. I demanded a Berserk review having no idea you did one. Now I have seen your review and now this I am so happy. Thank you!
I like how I searched the channel and didn't find any updated Berserk thoughts, so I came back to this video to check comments (sorting by New), and it's basically ALL people asking where the Berserk review is at :p
Mine was thinking RA Salvatore was the only fantasy I'd read. Now I've read WoT, Lies of Locke, Wizard's Rule, Kings of the Wyld, and still branching out.
Thanks for giving Berserk a second shot, looking forward to hearing your opinion of one of the most beloved Arcs in Berserk (The Golden Age!). Good or bad, it'll be better than the review of the first volume, which is like you said, Hobbit compared to LOTR.
Two things. I absolutely hate when someone uses the shower and gets out wet, doesn't clean and leaves me to wet my socks ahhhh! Also I love that you're giving Berserk another chance, we couldn't force you to go passed volume 1 but it definitely was just a small glimpse of not even the good part yet.
Well my biggest fantasy regret, I thought Robert Jordan wasn't that great of a writer. I was on the slog of wheel of time and the plot just stalled to the point it took me 6 months to finish book 10 (when I can normally finish a book in a day). After finishing I very much appreciate the destination even if I didn't love the entire journey.
Same things happening to me right now. I finished book 8 five or six months ago and I have yet to start book 9. It’s getting to the point where I’ll need to read a book by book summary to remember everything before continuing
Daniel, I was like you for many years, had a passion for the Wheel of Time like nothing else, read through it like 3 or 4 times consecutively because i couldn't let go of it, have the audiobooks as well. Moved on to Brandon Sanderson cosmere stuff and couldn't stop reading it as well. Then i came across a series called Cradle from Will Wight, and I think it may be my new favourite book series, I found it so good I read it like 4 times consecutively, really great series, and would love to hear your take on that series as well.
This is literally why you're one of my two favorite youtubers: Your ability to self-reflect and acknowledge your own mere humanness and grow. 🙂🙂💜 Stay real, Daniel!
Dang, now I can look forward to you talking about Berserk! Also if that's 1Q84 I spotted in the back then you're in for quite a treat in my opinion at least.
Hey, I was listening to this video, and looking at the beautiful new wheel of time book covers behind you as you talking, and notice a weird visual effect. The focus "pulses" every few seconds, giving a wobble effect on the lovely out of focus background/lights/bokeh(?). Most of the time, I'm looking at whichever Daniel is front of shot of course, not the background, but now I've noticed it I can't unsee it,, and I'm seeing it everywhere. flickerflickerflickerflickerflicker... ;) Any chance you could put this very *very* minor criticism on your list of "very small video things to look at when there's time?". Thanks for your work, and building a great youtube community.
Just yesterday I had my regular "Correct Daniel about Berserk" conversation with myself in the shower where Daniel was one of the poor shampoo bottles. Im glad these shampoo bottles can now rest in peace.
@@ThePreciseClimber True, I mean fantasy is by far the dominating "genre" in manga, to the point it is not even discussed as such. Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball, Bleach, HxH, etc. All fantasy giants. I especially hope he one day decided to tackle One Piece. A masterpiece that I think Daniel would adore, especially because of his love for gigantic worlds, cultures, deep characters, pirates, sea and of course absurdism, which is huge in One Piece.
Other options as well: the Golden Age arc of Berserk has been adapted (relatively faithfully) in an anime and movie trilogy. Would make a good comparison/contrast when you finish Golden Age manga arc as there are some bits that are changed/improved in the different versions
Here's a pro tip for getting into manga: watch the anime first and whenever they butcher your favorite series you'll be so pissed off you'll only read manga for the rest of your life. Also, the 1997 to 1998 series, not the new stuff. Just listen to this Guts's theme for the OST: th-cam.com/video/vZa0Yh6e7dw/w-d-xo.html So touching but you'll cry your soul out.
Cool vid. It's nice to see people constantly re-evaluating their content, and what goes into it. Looking forward to new videos (as always). A potentially interesting video would be reviewing your older videos, and giving your take now. Like when you get through portions of Berserk (keeping in mind that if Manga in that style isn't your thing, that's cool) and do a re-review. As I'm sure you know, your reactions to books change as you age, learn more, etc. Could be cool.
Things I said in the past that I regret: -GRRM writes too much -I'm never gonna read Malazan. It's just not my style -Song of Achilles? Nah, probably just hype -Discworld is too silly for me
I’ve found that I couldn’t fully enjoy most ASOIAF chapters/books until I reread them. Martin has given the answers to most of his riddles well ahead of the riddles themselves. Especially book one.
One of my past mistakes didn't involve the Fantasy genre so much specifically as it did POV choices in books. I would instantly put down a book upon discovering it was in the first person because I believed it to be "lazy writing." >_> ::smacks head on desk:: UGH! @_@ What was I thinking?! There are SO MANY good books in the first person POV!! Gawd, I was a pretentious twat.
As a big berserk fan. I'm glad you are giving it another shot. It's one of if not my favorite fantasies of all time. I admit it's not for everyone. Please enjoy and keep up the great work
I used to be quite vocal about really disliking Abercrombie's writing based on a very ill-advised DNF of Best Served Cold which I started without knowing that it wasn't a standalone. So yeah. That was wrong...
Gotta say I'm super excited to see you review Berserk again, its one of my favorite stories of all time not just in manga. But I also understand its not for everyone. I think you will really like it up until the end of the Golden Age arc though Lost Children is still one of my personal favorite storylines.
hahahahahahah Geralt versus Anomander. A soletaken dragon, Son of Darkness, Lord of Moonspawn, the mane of chaos, and knight of high house dark versus Gary the mutant. LOL. I don't know why, but I really wanna see that (I imagine Jaskier/Dandelion singing an annoyingly catchy song while the fight is happening).

I also consider re-reading it once again! How about doing like a book club? Reading X amount of chapters per week and discussing it with your viewers, so we can all follow along?
Edit: you could also so it with books! Set one book per month, maybe announce it a week prior or something, and discuss it with your fans on the discord or sth 😄
The Poppy War vs The Rage of Dragons?
I'm for this
Rage
I think the main character in Rage is a bit smarter and learns more from his mistakes, but is more OP, with less reason.
Poppy War, not even a choice for me. But I'd definitely love to see that debate
The Poppy War is better, especially after The Dragon Republic.
@@coleton7048 I can feel but I don't like the main character of Poppy War, especially after she take command of the Sikh(?)
She's immature, irresponsible, stubborn and selfish, and she lacks the charisma to pull off that those characteristics in way that will still keep me on her side.
actually legit excited for you to do a full review of berserk if you somehow found the time. its a different medium obviously so not sure if their is much in it for you to go out on a limb for but even for a manga it has some surprising literary merit in terms of theme, tone, and of course artwork.
I thought Daniel was going to say: I've talked a lot about the Wheel of Time on this channel and now I'm realizing I don't love it as much as I thought I did lmaoooo
As someone who dropped Berserk early but recently read up to the Millennium Falcon Arc, I'm happy to see you give it another shot :)
When you finish Berserk and if you ever feel like doing another manga I'm suggesting Vinland Saga
100 Tiste Andii liked this video for your retraction about Anomander Rake
I’m just glad he’s getting through the golden age arc. Berserk is beautiful and is such a journey to go through, have fun!
I feel that too . And it's not like Kvothe doesn't tell us time and again that he is to blame and not the hero people think he is.
Waiting for your PROPER berserk review !!!!!!!!
I'm real glad you are going to dive a little bit deeper into Berserk that makes me happy :)
I'm so glad you are revisiting Berserk. It's one of the best fantasy manga out there and it's STILL ongoing XDD
Another fantasy manga fav I'd like to recommend is Magic Knight Rayearth. It's short and sweet. Only 6 volumes (though I'm sure you can get all of them in one collected volume from Dark Horse). Great characters, great twists, great art. Love it love it love it.
"ongoing"
>It's one of the best fantasy manga out there
That's good!
>and it's STILL ongoing
That's bad...
>But it comes with free frogurt!
That's good!
>The frogurt contains potassium benzoate
... :|
@@sebastianm7556 what?
@@ThePreciseClimber How is it bad?
@@vos7619 Last year only 2 chapters were published and the final arc isn't even in sight. Kento Miura prefers to work on his other series like Duranki so Berserk will probably never end.
Kind of surprised this and the forsaken, darkest timeline review aren't on the Berserk playlist. Glad to have been here over the years to see the full journey.
Also really glad the '97 anime pretty much glosses over Black Swordsman review in one episode.
Speaking of the '97 anime, it introduced the world to Guts' Theme which is fantastic. :D
Martin's subversions are eerily similar to Tad Williams' method in Memory Sorrow Thorn.
Recent chapters for beserk have kinda sucked tho
Thank you for revisiting Berserk. Manga and comics is a weird medium to get into, because unlike books, you can see the author grow and get better in the same story they started with. The first couple volumes of berserk reflect a Muira that doesnt know where he wants to take the story yet. I look forward to your eventual thoughts on it!
The Golden Age Arc surprised me with one of the deepest experience I had while reading manga and also a lot of books a I have read.
Hi Daniel, I'm newer and I love you too! Especially because you convinced me to read my first Sanderson. Finished Final Empire and staring on WoA!
Unfair to compare a character who appears in very few scenes of 3 books with a character who has 8 something books that focus mostly on him.
Hussain T I mean you can still compare them but regardless Anomander outclasses Vilge and Geralt
@@christopherbaker8595
Unless you think Caladan Brood and Will Parry is a fair comparison, I stand firm.
Hussain T hell yes why wouldn’t it be? As per original post youre only comparing power levels, it’s not that deep
@@t.hussain921 youd have a point if you were talking about character development but as it is you're standing firm in quicksand
Thank you!
He dropped berserk again
@@everygrillindude5317 on his channel or reddit or something 😶😶😶 where at lol
looking forward to future Daniels reviews!
Credit to you man, not easy owning up to mistakes, I hope you enjoy reading the golden age arc
Dude, I love basically everything you upload. You're super funny. Great stuff. Got me into reading King big time!
This is a great f**king video man. Glad I subscribed.
BRO I haven't watched your channel in a year and I came back to find you've become a manga stan 🥲
Stay real, Daniel!
The editing and pacing of this video were both great.
Hyped to see your berserk review :)
Most of the time, I'm looking at whichever Daniel is front of shot of course, not the background, but now I've noticed it I can't unsee it,, and I'm seeing it everywhere. flickerflickerflickerflickerflicker... ;)
Any chance you could put this very *very* minor criticism on your list of "very small video things to look at when there's time?".
Thanks for your work, and building a great youtube community.
Just yesterday I had my regular "Correct Daniel about Berserk" conversation with myself in the shower where Daniel was one of the poor shampoo bottles. Im glad these shampoo bottles can now rest in peace.
That's sad
😂😂
I wonder if this is going to open the floodgates for more manga reviews in the future. Lots of great fantasy manga out there.
@@yacomics4072 okay.
Just listen to this Guts's theme for the OST: th-cam.com/video/vZa0Yh6e7dw/w-d-xo.html
So touching but you'll cry your soul out.
So glad you’re giving manga another shot, it definitely has its own vibe, maybe after Berserk you could check out Dorohedoro?
I'm so happy you're giving berserk a chance!!! since I really love your taste in books! actually everything you recommend i end up loving!
Things I said in the past that I regret:
-GRRM writes too much
-I'm never gonna read Malazan. It's just not my style
-Song of Achilles? Nah, probably just hype
-Discworld is too silly for me
Daniel just did a hit piece against himself.
Please enjoy and keep up the great work
I’m extremely happy your giving berserk another chance
I used to be quite vocal about really disliking Abercrombie's writing based on a very ill-advised DNF of Best Served Cold which I started without knowing that it wasn't a standalone. So yeah. That was wrong...
Anomander Rake is so goddamn cool, I'm glad Malazan has gotten more love lately
Berserk story growing with the band of the hawk is one of the best.
2020, Nynaeve still the angriest healer I've ever seen.
Angry healer is my favorite trope. "How dare you get hurt and make me have to do my job!"
If you’re looking for more manga, Junji Ito is the King of horror
