For a lot of manga, if they aren’t pulling in numbers in the first 20 chapters they get axed - so that’s why they do such a hardcore straight to the point approach

Refreshing to see a story about Vikings that doesn't just portray them as weird biker gang type metalheads and leans into the domestic and ordinary sides of Norse life as well. There's an outstanding level of attention to detail historically speaking in this series

If you're looking for more incredibly well researched manga for later, Golden Kamui is great, and also incredibly weird and funny. It's about a gold and criminal hunt in Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost Island, and has so many details about the Ainu people's, history, and what life was kinda like inthe area around the 1900s, where Hokkaido was kinda like Japan's Wild West from the early 1900s

I kinda always love it when a manga writer does insane amounts of research for their stories, there's a manga writer named Mori Kaoru who actually has made a name for herself with her absolutely beautiful and extremely well researched historical fiction manga like Emma and The Bride Stories (Victorian England and 1800s Central Asia respectively)

Manga usually debut with one long hook chapter (others have already pointed out some stuff regarding the industry) and the first chapter is the entirety of episode 7 whereas the rest of this volume (which is around 15 chapters i believe) takes up the first 4 episodes of the anime. So yeah when you have confirmation that the entire 24 episodes are produced regardless, you don't necessarily need that hook anymore

Vinland saga one of those manga that recieved such a MASTERFUL anime adaptation that I actually even prefer that.
The cinematography, epic and emotional score, voice acting, consistent and somewhat more realistic character designs.
    Impressions given correctly.
For example; While it seems in the manga Thors tightly grabs thorfinn's shoulders and attempts to assert adult views on him
In the anime, it's him gently laying his hands on his shoulders and gently telling him that in the world, no one is his enemy and no one he needs to hurt.

If I had to recommend any anime adaptation ever it would be the Vinland Saga anime. I even prefer the way they tell the story over how the manga does in the first couple of volumes. There's some added scenes with the involvement of the author that really add to the story too. It's incredible, from art, to animation, to the goddamn MUSIC, to the voice acting, it's fucking incredible. 10/10 anime adaptation.

Im pretty sure the part about that guy in the begining being his uncle is a translation issue. In Japanese the word for uncle can also mean much older friend or acquaintance. It's an informal and somewhat rude way of addressing someone so it fits with Askelad's charactarisation. Big brother can also mean the same thing, again an older friend or acquaintance but not so much older as to call them uncle. I havent read the manga in a while so i could be wrong but im pretty sure the two of them are not related. It's not a big deal but i thought i should leave the comment becasue there's a chance you might run into something simmilar in other manga as well. Anyway i look forward to more videos on the series and enjoy the rest of the story.

  • @MacScarfield
    @MacScarfield 2 ปีที่แล้ว

(Espen) Askeladd/«(Espen) The Ash Lad» is not a historical character but the hero of multiple Norwegian Folk Tales. Usually in a rivalry with his two older siblings (Per and Pål/Paul), he is «the runt trickster» who is kind to those he meets that have fallen on bad times (where his brothers are rude/lazy/hostile), but still outsmarts his much powerful opponents (his brothers, trolls and the King), often due to the things and people he has gathered along his journeys that other view as “worthless”, to win gold, the hand of the Princess and/or half the Kingdom. As Norway was often ruled by Denmark and Sweden historically, but has since grown to become a wealthy nation, it is not hard to see Askeladd as an embodiment of «scarpy but cleaver» Norway: Henrik Ibsen’s much more notorious hustler protagonist Peer Gynt (from his eponymous play, made famous alongside the Music Edvard Grieg made for it, such as “In the Hall of the Mountain King” & “Morning Mood”) has some notable similarities with Askeladd, especially the lesser savory (mayby even irredeemable?) parts that can be read into Askeladd/Norwegian Culture. Without spoiling the Manga/Anime to much, the Askeladd of “Vinland Saga” is more in tune with Peer Gynt…
One of the reasons I think this manga/anime works so well, is that its creator uses the transformation of the Norse Culture from a Honor Society with Raiding Vikings and Blood Feuds to the Rule of Law under Christian Kings, to comment on how Japan’s own honor society lead to a militarized Empire and the catastrophic WW2, and the post-war pacifism of Japan.

I love this series for taking a piece of history(Thorfinn Karlsefni and his expedition to North America) that we really don't know much about(I believe the only proof of this event that we have is his personal logs) and re-invented it into this epic tale about revenge and what it does to someone, personally I feel like Vinland Saga is a gold standard for fictionalized historical accounts

  • @VeritasVitae619

The historical accuracy of vinland goes beyond the world even. For example Thorfinn himself, Lief Erikson ( the old man with the pipe and head dress ) and a number of other characters throughout the manga were real people in this time of history.

You'll be excited to know that at some point in the near future of your reading the manga changes from weekly to monthly releases and the quality of the art improves drastically. I wouldn't hesitate to put the imporved art on par with Berserk, but not quite at the level of Vagabond.

28:42 all the exagerations like those are there because just like in the viking sagas, the main characters in them were almost super human and they always did great feats like that one, because they were almost like greek myths in the way they were written, and the mangaka tried to put that aspect in the manga

Vinland Saga was published on Weekly Shonen Magazine, but Chainsaw Man (at least part one) was published on Weekly Shonen Jump.
They're under the same company, but they're different entity, of course their style of making manga books aren't the same: I don't think Chainsaw Man has hardcover? Or its hardcover might be much shorter than Vinland Saga.
The page counts between each paperback aren't that different, but I'm not sure about hardcover page counts.

The manga industry, from what little I understand, is very competitive.
Unlike an author of a book, mangakas have to kind of prove themselves with each new chapter that they deserve to be a part of the Maganize they are being published by, which is why I think subtlelty doesn't work as well as bluntness for the beggining of the story, because you have to hook as many people as possible in the smallest number of chapters. Theyhave to tell the reades: "Hey, this is what's all about!"
There are so many series with great potential that end up cut and finished in haste because they couldn't keep readers interested enough, and so their time on the magazine comes to an end and the story is just... finished. Sad as ****.

I have to say that I personally think Thorfinn has one of the greatest character arcs in fiction, not manga, not anime, not fantasy, fiction!

Hoenstly "Askeland" is on the better end of the spectrum of people trying to pronounce his name.
And the art will improve the further into the story you get. For the first few volumes VS was publsihed weekly (or bi-weekly I don´t remember). It eventually moved to monthly publication, and it allowed Yukimura to spend more time on each chapter. You have not yet seen the god-tier artist that he is.

Daniel, you should now know how much The Northman borrowed inspiration from Vinland.

Fortunately for this series you don’t have to worry about the abrupt ending because of health issues since the creator is around the final arc of the whole series

it's pronounced Ash-e-lad - his character in folklore is the archetypal Ash Lad, or male Cinderella, so it's pronounced like that

Just to make sure, you get all the nomenclature right...
    - Thors "the Troll" is the father of Thorfinn (not Jom)
    - Jom is the place the special Viking Squad that Thors came from
    - Askelad is pronounced Ass-Ke-Lad, like the Lad of Ashes
and the old man telling storries is canonically Leif Erikson
Edit: Well, just saw the secong half of the video... so, cheers, mate!

My dad does NOT like anime
    Except for two:
Cowboy Bebop, because it reminds him of Firefly
And Vinland Saga's anime adaptation, where years later he still asks "When's season 2 coming?" (2023 get hyyyyyyype)

24:16 I'm not sure if you knew this before, but Vinland Saga already HAS an anime adaptation. And it's amazing.
I would normally suggest checking that out first (even the author for the manga has said that anime adaptation was superior), but since you've already started manga, it's better to stick with it I guess.
