Had to ship my Dad's ashes back to Scotland about 2.5 years ago. Dealt with a customs broker in Scotland - no problem. Dealt with Air Canada via their toll-free freight number, no problem, they confirmed what I had to do with packaging and addressing the box to the broker in Scotland - essentially what I already knew. But the Air Canada staff in Penticton, BC, were idiots. I had to take time off work to get the box on the morning flight, and it was refused. They pulled BS about how they needed authorization from some rectal interface in another city, so we missed that flight (and yes, even for a box of ashes, it was important to make that first flight so that it could make all the connecting flights). After work I called the AC freight people and the guy there was more than patient with my anger (it wasn't his fault) and walked me through all the steps again.. Gave me a new confirmation number and I took time off work the next morning to drop Dad off at the airport. Now I'm showing up before the first AC flight of the day, so the airport is deserted, and I'm not in anyone's way and everything should be simple. Wrong. The people working there are used to making puppies as it's a small airport with few flights and they're making good wages for doing squat. And they're the kings and queens of their little hill. Package refused again for a bogus reason and at this time I'm getting testy, but that's a bad thing to do in an airport where the only people around are Air Canada dog fuckers and and armed security guard. So i go to work, late again, with Dad in the trunk of my car. I call the Air Canada freight number the next morning (about 4 am my time) and start to explain when the guy cuts me off. "You're the guy with the ashes, aren't you." i say yes, and he tells me that they've been talking about it, and to hold on. Another guy comes on and goes ballistic when I told him the package with my Dad's ashes had been refused again. I told him what the dipshits in Penticton had told me. He essentially told me that he was sorry but that he was angry with me. He told me that he was in the process of sending an order to Penticton and if they gave me any trouble to tell them to refer to their "scratch sheet". I walked in as soon as the airport opened (again making me late for work) with the box, glared at the security guard on my way past, banged the box on the counter and waited about five minutes for the two idjits to come out of the back. By now I should have been on a first name basis with all of them. They could tell I was mad, and tried to go through their slow motion "we have to check everything" bullshit when I just told them to shut up and check their "scratch sheet". They waddled back to where their other computer was, and I don't know what it said, but the transaction was completed in a damned hurry when they got back. No apologies from them for my lost work time over three mornings, no apologies for the anguish this was causing my mother and I, just pay here and get out.
So even with the support I got from the Air Canada freight guys over the phone (thanks guys) based on the service I got from senior local Air Canada assholes in Penticton, BC in a trying and emotional time - fuck Air Canada. The only one in our family who didn't care was Dad - and he was scattered in a favourite trout river in Scotland.

Got the video of Dad's youngest brother scattering the ashes in the river (where he and Mum courted) and pics of the remaining few family and friends in Scotland having a tea after. I must say that the wake we had in Canada with the Legion group my Dad was a part of was appropriately raucous, with his children, grandchildren and all his buddies in attendance. Too much beer (we were told we were close to the record), many laughs and though everyone felt the loss (more his friends, i think), no tears. That was the true send off. But still, fuck Air Canada. I hate Air Canada. I was flying from Toronto to Florida, (or trying.) My plane was sitting on the runway about to takeoff, but then it lost power. After about 2 minutes it came back on. This happened 2 more times before the flight was canceled. We were told that the plane was dangerous to fly and were assured that another plane would be prepared immediately for us to transfer to. We were told that we wouldn’t even need to touch our bags, we would only need to just walk to another gate and get on a different plane. It didn’t go down like that. We got off the plane and went to a different gate. About 200 of us sat there for about an hour and a half before people started to ask questions. It was only after waiting for a new plane for 2 hours were we told that the new plane actually didn’t exist and wasn’t coming. We were sent to them get our bags at the carrousel. If you aren’t familiar with the Toronto airport, it literally takes ages to get your baggage. I’m a world traveller and nowhere does the baggage take longer to come than in the airport in my own city. Also, another flight’s baggage was being unloaded before ours so we’d need to wait twice as long. We sat for another 3 hours just waiting for our bags. By the time the people like Robert decided to unload our bags, it had started raining heavily so all of our things were completely soaked. We then wanted to immediately book another flight so we went to where you did that with about 200 other people from the same flight and there was already a massive line. We asked if we could get priority and move to the front as we were all promised another flight and had been in the airport for 7 hours at this point but they said no and ignored us. It was only 2 hours later when I got to the front of the line that I was politely told that there were absolutely no available seats on any flights to Florida for the next 2 days unless I wanted a double stop-over that would turn my 3 hour journey into a 10 hour one. I declined. After getting home exhausted from the 9 hour affair, I of course hopped on the phone and explained this whole disaster to Air Canada. The cancellation, the fake promise, the rude employees, and how it had wasted my whole day and ruined my planned visit with my parents that I can only do twice a year. The asshole on the phone obviously didn’t care and I when I expected a free flight coupon or something, he told me that I wouldn’t even get my money back for my first class ticket! I pleaded for him to just give me back my money so I wouldn’t have just spent it on a frustrating day but said that he couldn’t as the flight was canceled for my own safety or some bullshit. Yes I’m happy that the plane didn’t lose power in the air but that shouldn’t be grounds for not refunding paying customers! It’s like if you bought a new car but it was then recalled for not having brakes before you even got to drive it. The car was then taken back, but you weren’t given a new one after the company had promised you one, and they wouldn’t refund you either. That was what this was like. That is one of many reasons why I hate Air Canada.
    Edit: #fuckaircanada

Mat S that’s a good idea in theory, but they rarely if ever give you back money and I’m sure that people have tried suing before. I have flown with Air Canada once. It only took 10 years of therapy to get over.
I am an Englishman, and we always think of Canadians as awfully nice people, so assume everything they do will be nice. I was living in Mexico City, back in 2007, and wanted to go to Buenos Aires, to meet a girl that I had spent years chatting to online. Most of the tickets were over 800usd. Air Canada was 580usd. Bargain I thought.
Until I got to the baggage check. I had 2 bags at 30 kg allowance. Neither of my cases was over 25 and I had a camera bag and a suit bag with 3 suits in it. They charged me 150 USD for that bag. Lufthansa has never charged me for excess baggage.
So the story goes on. The plane was practically empty yet I had to sit in the allocated seat even though there were many empty seats. So the guy next to me and I got into conversation. He was being sent to work in Mexico City by his company, and had been getting to know the city.
I was flying to Buenos Aires, so you might think the quickest route would be south from Mexico, but my this flight was going to Toronto, my connecting flight was to la paz.
Less than an hour into the flight the attendant brought us a sandwich and a soda. She then asked for 8 dollars. I only had USD Mexican pesos and Argentinian peso on me. None of which was acceptable. I said to the attendant that I had never been charged for a meal on an international flight.
"This is a domestic flight". She said.
"But we are crossing 2 international borders". I pointed out.
"Yeah, but Air Canada considers this a domestic flight.
The guy next to me gave me the 8 Canadian dollars. I gave him 200 pesos and said that he could treat himself and his wife to a steak dinner in Mexico City for that.
After a while the attendant brought out a trolly from which she was selling duty free goods. I pointed out that duty free goods cannot be sold on domestic flights, to which she retorted that we were crossing two international borders. Never let it be said that Canadians don't understand irony.
The fun continues when I get to Pearson. I had a 5 hour wait for my connecting flight to La Paz. 5 hours became 6 then 7 finally after 8.5 hours the flight was called. We arrived at La Paz about 30 minutes before our connecting flight was due to take off, with suggestions to run to the departure gate. We did and all had a great view of the runway as our plane took off. We were assured that they would get us on the next flight.
2 hours later we were on our way.... To Montevideo. Yeah I know it's not in Argentina, but in aviation terms it is pretty close.
In those days Montevideo airport was a rather tired looking 1940s terminal. With some equally out dated equipment. The pilot told us we needed to refuel. We were parked a long way from any buildings. The refuelling rig arrived. To my surprise a guy arrived with a small bowser towed by what looked like a golf buggy. He then hand pumped the contents into the plane. When it was empty, he went away to refill it and came back to resume fueling the plane. This took 2 hours and at least 5 different pump guys. At least on this leg of the journey we did get a hot meal which was not charged for.
I finally got to Buenos Aires airport 5 hours late. I was unable to tell the girl that I would be delayed. I was amazed that she was waiting there for me. So I did have a happy ending, no thanks to Air Canada.

    An Air Canada story:
A few years ago, I was traveling back home to visit a friend who ultimately died of cancer. Around every six weeks, I would fly from Nassau to Thunder Bay on various airlines on lowest price tickets for a visit.
Six weeks before she died, I was in Thunder Bay and was scheduled for a Sunday morning flight back south. Sunday morning, I was at the Air Canada counter trying to make a decision on whether to stay a few more hours for another visit. The agent said that there were lots of seat availability that day and I could go standby later. The agent overheard my conversation with my ride, she then gave me a seat on an afternoon flight, no standby, and took my luggage. When I arrived in Toronto, my luggage was at the bottom of the escalator- it arrived on an earlier flight. Am unforgettable great experience with Air Canada.

As a Canadian, let me tell you, you're not alone in that hate for Air Canada... first time flying to Europe, I had a connection before my flight from Toronto to Warsaw, and they lost my luggage, before my connection. I made my flight to Warsaw (with Lot - no complaints about them), but my luggage didn't. My luggage went to Montreal, but it did eventually catch up with me. Only 3 days washing the clothes I wore on the flight every evening, and letting them dry overnight so they could be worn again the next day.

@sshortguy1 c Overbooked our flight as part of our world trip for our honeymoon, the AA flight was a part of a connecting flight (all booked with their partner airline). I was assigned a seat and my wife was told that she was the unlucky one, along with an 18 year old girl) who were going to miss the flight. After a chaotic couple of hours of stressing like crazy and running between (un)help desks she was assigned a seat at the last second as someone agreed to get off the flight, but the abuse we copped from staff while waiting to find out that decision was a bloody joke. Then once we got on the plane the attitude from the attendants was a joke, sat on their phone for most of the flight, rolled their eyes in disgust if we asked for a glass of water etc. Joke of an airline. The 18 year old girl that missed the flight was bawling her eyes out, clearly scared and upset, and missed her 18th birthday celebrations as a result, but the staff didn't give the slightest shit. You never heard of people being screwed over due to overbooked flights in Australia etc because the airlines tend not to run like complete pricks.
