I'm starting flight school next year and just started learning VFR and GA ops via the sim after flying airliners for years, could not be better timing! You always have some of the best tutorials out there.
I am so glad to see you back, I learned almost everything I know about flight simming from your early videos. I, along with a lot of other people, am looking forward to many more. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video! The foremost reason I gained the proper knowledge and confidence to use vatsim was from your tutorial videos, and i still reference them. I have not made a leap onto vfr vatsim but this will definitely help me with going live. Thank you again!
1:22:20 You’re not wrong. There is a a couple freeware C172 realism mods that totally change the way it flies. It feels significantly more like flying the real thing. Both of the mods are great by themselves, but they work even better together. If you haven’t seen them, I’d highly suggest downloading them. The mods also change both the steam gauge and the G1000 versions.
Hehe thanks, it was fun to put the stuff I learned in the real world into a VATSIM video, hope it will be of use for people because VFR does deserve more attention I think!
@@AviationPro Oh yeah. I started VFR yesterday after half an year flying airliners. Wow! Started today a 2 hours flight with 4 legs in New Zealand... wow! Thanks for the tutorial and comeback, again 😄😄♥♥
In USA most VFR flying is done without Sids or Stars, not necessary to use Airways even. Just fly from uncontrolled airport to uncontrolled or Delta tower. Use pilotage and dead reckoning, wind correction etc. is where irl training starts, then gps or navaids. Good idea to follow vfr training training syllabus.
Hi! Why didn't you load flight plan into GPS? Just for help reason, for visual assistance, let's say. Of course, it is a VFR flight, but if our plane has this option than why not to use it? And same question is about autopilot HD and ALT Hold mode - why not to use it, even if it is a VFR flight? Thank you!
He probably wanted to keep it simple, GPS is fine but always in VMC. Notice that he has a Navigraph window opened up, which he uses as if it were GPS/chart.
Navigraph is very easy to use as an assistance next to your visual navigation outside, it's like using Skydemon or Foreflight in real life. Most waypoints are based on visual landmarks which makes it harder to program in the GPS (you'd have to use VOR radials and distances) or IFR waypoints. Moreover, VFR is about looking outside! iPad tools and GPS are really just an assistance, but the iPad is a better assistant with much more information than the simple GPS in a Cessna. Autopilot usage is of course up to you, but for VFR flying it's nice to make turns when you want and need, maybe lower the wing every now and then to check for a landmark, or to make some S turns to check for traffic. I never really used the autopilot in my VFR training flights in real life :)
Amazing tutorial, I’m new to vatsim and really struggled first time, this is just what I needed! Random though but I seem to be the only person who has seat height set to around 65-70 😅
Thank you for the video, always nice to see a good tutorial. only one small correction on my side, the planes on the cost line are not 10,11 o'clock, its a 1,2 o'clock traffic (based on where you looked for the traffic :) )
Great video and thanks for the very clear explanation! For fun I use the E6B (old school) calculation of wca and fuel planning 😃🛫. Do you know if I also can use EHAM for VFR flight with a Cessna or Beechcraft type of planes? Dank je en leuk je weer terug te zien!
Thank you! That's very brave haha, but a great tool! :) In the real world you probably would pay way too much for that, but sure on VATSIM you can, just park on the General Aviation platform at Schiphol East somewhere.
Thank you very much for this video! Although I don't fly on Vatsim, the procedures are almost the same. But I have a question: I use P3D v4, and performing VFR flights is difficult because not all visual references are captured in the simulator, despite having the ORBX products (vector, global, OpenLC). Therefore, navigation becomes complex to the point of having to use VOR radials (but not flying only with radio beacons, obviously) Thank you very much again!
For VFR you need startup clearance at controlled airports here, but not at uncontrolled airports. For IFR in general you contact Planner/Startup/Delivery for startup clearance and Ground for pushback
If one wanted to fill in the flight plan with heights (as you were discussing airspace height restrictions) I can see that navigraph does not have a field for this, would you suggest another tool? Does simbreif work with VFR? How about little nav map? Cheers
There are other tools like little nav map or Plan-G. I’m not entirely sure, but I think at least the latter comes with that ability. Simbrief is primarily an IFR tool, unless you somehow create custom waypoints but that can be rather cumbersome.
Hallo, another question, I hope it’s okay :-) I’ve found that not quite all airports have ways to fly the circuits (maybe it’s me who can’t find them) in this situation do I make my own or what?
There's usually a standard circuit pattern for airports, could be defined per country. In the AIP of the Netherlands you can find the standard circuit which should be used when no specific circuit is published for an airport :)
What if there isn’t airport ATC online, do I just ask Center if they’re online, for taxi, take off and landing etc? If it is normally a controlled airport
There will be a VFR flight live in the future. However, for recording a phraseology tutorial this was a better option, also to include all the frequencies which would be active during a VFR event (events which I’m not always able to join myself).
Seems Vatsim has no VFR ATC service, it's done by yourself. Why not use PilotEdge to do the VFR with real ATC, hope you can do one tutorial with PilotEgde VFR.
You sure can! Some smaller airfields may not be online on VATSIM much, but you can still fly VFR to more national airports. Also some regions may have VFR events every now and then too :)
I am sure I am too stupid. I do not get what I have to do with the QNH information. On an analogue altimeter is the QNH the left number that I have to enter? I watched several tutorials but I do not get what to do with this QNH
You have to enter the QNH value in the altimeter. In Europe they use milibars (mb) for that as measure, so you use that scale to put it in. In the US they use inches of mercury (inHg) and you will hear in an ATIS a value like 'altimeter 29.92'. Then you use that scale to put it in ;)
@@AviationPro so my understanding is that the left scale can be used for the QNH value. So that means I turn the knob until the left scale shows me the number of the given QNH. The crazy thing about this is that I set the scale to the given QNH value but the altimeter showed me that I am at a level below zero standing in the parking position. I wonder if I have to set up anything additionally in Microsoft Flight Simulator?
@@thomas_ger4098 It should work like that yes. Of course the weather needs to actually match the QNH value otherwise it doesn't make sense putting a wrong QNH in. Airports below sea level will naturally show below zero altitudes. When you put the QNH in you should see the elevation of the airport on your altimeter. The altimeter is just a barometer, that's all :)
@@AviationPro OK fine so I will do another testing this evening. And I will check if the airport Karlsruhe lies below sea level. Thank you for your support and your great tutorial videos.
but what about navigate without GPS ? is that even possible with a Cross - country flight like this with winds and stuff going on. feels like u whould be complete lost after a while :P
Absolutely, it was used here just as a reference. Without GPS you create a navigation log with waypoints you pick on your big VFR chart and then include tracks and speeds to reach those waypoints. The rest is just looking outside and recognizing landmarks
VFR flying and the CAT ratings on pilotedge is a much better approach than vatsim for wannabe real world pilots. Online atc on your schedule. I use both, off and on. Not affiliated.

So in The Netherlands, push and start is NOT at pilots command like in North America? You need specific clearance to start?

Hey how's it going, my question is ...do i need some kind of permission from msfs to post flight sim videos on youtube?... great insight btw.thnx
Not as far as I'm aware of! Otherwise all the content on TH-cam probably wouldn't be there ;)
Doing this on live vatsim would have made the video 100 times better
