As a retired health director, I can't stress enough how important it is to get outside and expose yourself to these minor bugs. A long time without exposure could create an infection that is more severe, since they have had enough time to replicate and mutate.
I think thats a double edged sword. By going out and getting yourself willingly infected, you are risking infecting those who are incapable of surviving it and you are helping the virus spread by being yet another vector, thus helping it “replicate and mutate”
This is generally okay for the normal population, but those high-risk (e.g. immunocompromised, Elderly, etc.) should get the available vaccine in the market. Well, nothing is harmful if we all vaccinate ourselves.

A great great *remedy* that I have learned from my days with common cold is taking frequent naps. During nap, body gets time to recover, combined with healthy food, chances of recovering even faster becomes better. Of course and only when this remedy seems failing, I go by taking medicines.
Everything you just noted does absolutely nothing to prevent you from becoming infected in the first place. Ergo they are "treating the symptoms" after the fact as opposed to proactively trying to inhibit your catching the illness. If however you socially distance around anyone who appears sick + wash your hands regularly + and mask during times of the year when these infectious illnesses are prevalent = your chances of getting sick will be significantly reduced and hence you will not need "remedies" which really only treat symptoms rather than affect resolution. 🤔
@@varyolla435 Yes, you need remedies when you have already got infected and the preventable measures you've mentioned works to some extent, all facts laid, I'm only bothered about the "necessary" exposure they often recommend as crutial that may "train" the immune system somehow for future infections.
@@ahmermirza In other words you do not understand and that lends you to incredulity-based rationalizations. So one more time. Treating symptoms is not a "remedy" as it does not help facilitate your immune system eliminate the organism in question. All you are doing is masking the symptoms - not unlike taking ibuprofen for a muscle ache. The muscle inflammation is still there waiting for your body to repair whatever the damage is = you simply dulled the pain for a time. As to exposure = that is how your immune system works. It is simple exposure -------> reaction. Your body defeats microorganisms by generating specific antibodies against them. For that to happen = you must first be exposed so that your B-Cells have a "blueprint" to create those IgG antibodies which matchup to the morphology of the organism. Moral of the story: it's simple really. If you catch the illness you are exposed to the full-strength organism which means you risk the most serious side effects. If however you peremptorily expose yourself via vaccination - you still generate antibodies the same as if you caught the illness except = because the vaccine is weaker your potential side effects are exponentially less. So which is the better route of exposure then as you are "at risk" no matter what?? Ponder that. 🤔
I have a horrific cold right now. It feels like I’m dying (not to be dramatic). I catch between 2-3 a year and it’s always the WORSE!! I can’t do anything but lay here and suffer till it’s over. 🙄🙄🙄 my nose is going through it.
One time back during my Junior High School(years ago), I had the common cold for 2 months. It just wouldn't go away, it was the weirdest thing ever. My doctor gave me an antiviral drug, and immediately it went away, but after the second dose, it came back. It lasted about 3 days after taking the drugs, and finally I was all better again. I just could get better, I don't know what the heck happened.
First is antivirals are not used for common colds - and colds don't last 2 months. So you had something else going on for. Next is it takes longer for any medication to work than 24 hrs. Infections do not simply "go away" for a day or two to pop back up. Typically it takes several days for any medication to have a real impact. So it sounds like you had more than a typical cold and your body was already trying to clear it but either was unable - or you developed a "secondary infection" as can happen. The immune system being consumed with fighting one organism sometimes sees others cause subsequent infections. So any medicine you took may have begun to make an impact after a day or so but did not fully begin to work until several days later as is typical.
Well there are medicines and remedies that claim to boost immunity only problem is a hyperactive immune system which is faster is more likely target it's own host cells I. E. Our's one way is to grow or create an extra thymus but human body has no space for it
@@avirajsinghmehta1857 I don’t know where you’re getting your info from but getting a second thymus isn’t going to somehow magically solve all your problems. The thymus’ main functionality consists of the selection and tolerance induction of T-lymphocytes. However, it doesn’t actually _produce_ any immune cells on its own, that’s more the bone marrow’s job. Besides, hyperplasia of the thymus is also markedly found in autoimmune diseases (most strikingly in myasthenia gravis) making any notion of just randomly giving someone a second thymus a pretty horrible idea. Cellular and humoral immunity is a very complex and delicate system consisting of many layers of interlocking checks and controls and “improving” a system that has evolved to maximize fitness for eons already artificially is bound to be a very difficult task. Even disregarding whether the body has space for extra organs (which, mind you, it has plenty of that we use when (auto-)transplanting organs such as kidneys, endocrine organs etc.)), just randomly inserting exogenous tissue is a surefire way to end common colds along with the life of the patient. She told me to get myself a D3 bloodtest to find the level in the blood. I did and it turned out it was only at about 1/3 of what it was supposed to be. I was advised to take 20.000 units for 4 weeks to increase the level. I did and after said weeks the next test came in at the correct level. I now take 5000 units along with K2 daily during the dark time of the year to keep the bloodlevel at a sufficient level.

@@toxicdino8676 nope. I’ve obviously sneeze and cough occasionally like everyone who isn’t sick, and I get a mildly stuffy nose in the fall from allergies, but no, not alot or consistently though.
Don't forget, there are risks and side effects to any drug you introduce to your body. You have to weigh the risk of the drug vs no drug or a different drug. Something might kill your cold but also your kidneys, for example.
Currently on day 4 of cold and its has not been showing sign of getting better . I got fever and chills from time to time . The cough is worse at day and dont get me started on the stuffy nose and headache😢
Hi @Professor, I am an actual professor and I am currently with a cold. I do not want to miss a day from school because mid-term test is coming and my students need their classes. Tell me your secret!
🥱 Another one with absolutely zero understanding here. How sad. Moral of the story: absolutely nothing you consume will protect you from = an *INFECTIOUS* pathogenic organism. Ergo the solution then is not to wait to be exposed/infected and "hope" your immune system can cope. The solution is = to *NOT* be exposed in the first place. So vaccines help to peremptorily elicit "herd immunity" ----------> which acts to help reduce "morbidity" -------> which reduces your chances of being exposed in the first place. See how easy that was. Rather than *REACTING* to being infected = act proactively to prevent the same. As an aside. Once you are infected the damage is already done. Even if you are lucky enough to get through it unscathed you have given the organism yet another chance to mutate itself as well as potentially infecting others - thus keeping the chain of infection going. 🤔
(On Pfizer and Moderna, I don’t know much about j&j) yes, the first 2 doses are only effective towards the first strain, and are decreasingly effective towards the newer ones. The boosters, however, are effective against the newer strains and the most recent booster is supposedly effective against all strains. Thankfully, the fatality rate of the new strains is significantly lower, essentially making COVID on par with the common cold.
I don’t recall Covid ever having a high fatality rate, I mean I guess there was that one time a dude died of Covid moments after getting into a vehicle crash.
common cold is very light for me just a stuffy-sneezy/light runny nose & headache for a day or two , no medicines required although i have a combo pill of levocetirizine, phenylephrine & paracetamol for quick relief, but the flu results heavy fever, no energy , completely put to the bed for a week & a visit to the doctor, i had covid delta variant before vaccination even that was tolerable but flu put me on bed rest for a week.
Many people catch Colds via = contact....... So taking a bath regardless of water temperature alone can help reduce your chances of being infected - just as washing your hands frequently can. As to drinking milk..... - Pffft!
@@varyolla435 I'm a good hand washer.. always.. so I don't think less cold with me is cause of higiene but something to do with blood circulation or body temperature or something. Btw thanks for your comment
@@thehuman2861 No = it doesn't...... Perhaps you should first learn the science and forgo all the assumptions - just saying. p.s. - viruses and bacteria evolved as we did on a planet that is = mostly water + which is subject to changes in temperatures. So can you honestly believe that variations in how hot or cold your bath in matters..... A pathogen which can infect and colonize you can withstand both water + temperatures which you can. When you wash your hands etc. you are "mechanically removing" organisms from your skin. The temp of the water and even the soap do not so much as kill the microorganisms as help you scrub them off. Your problem therefore is = contact + inhalation around others - as is you are exposing yourself to be infected and/or you may simply be colonized already.

As a child I spent a lot of time outside. I hardly ever get a cold. If I do it only lasts for an hour or two .
If we didn't catch cold how would we bunk school ? Thanks rhinovirus for making our childhood awesome.
Lol, my childhood memories are now a lot more pleasant!!
You got to stay home just for a cold? It would've taken a high fever or vomiting to get me out of school.
Brilliant animation. The vaccines, viruses, bacteria, medicines, etc. have better expressions than some Bollywood actors.
As a human right now who's got common cold I appreciate this
Ted ed has taught me many things!😊
so we all got colds rn 😭 ted-ed truly timed this perfectly
Never gotten a cold in my life somehow
You never got a stuffy and runny nose, cough, sneezing?
@@toxicdino8676 nope. I’ve obviously sneeze and cough occasionally like everyone who isn’t sick, and I get a mildly stuffy nose in the fall from allergies, but no, not alot or consistently though.
@@flargarbason1740 wow, how old are you may I ask.

Holy smokes! I'm suffering from cough&cold rn and TH-cam has recommended me this.
😮
Me: I wish I got the cold so I could stay home.
Me a month later sick as a dog: What on earth what was I thinking?!
As a middle school whose got a cold student right now, I appreciate this
Man I have a cold right now it feels awful man. I am so upset that we don't have a cure for it yet!
Pity it wasn't covid. In spite of over 50 years of failure with the common cold, They got lucky and created a vaccine for covid straight away.
Most underrated skill is the animation in these videos
As a teenager who has a mom stuck with a cold, I appreciate this.
I honestly just deal with it until I feel better, which usually takes two to three days.
Don't forget, there are risks and side effects to any drug you introduce to your body. You have to weigh the risk of the drug vs no drug or a different drug. Something might kill your cold but also your kidneys, for example.
At least you are thinking.
Currently on day 4 of cold and its has not been showing sign of getting better . I got fever and chills from time to time . The cough is worse at day and dont get me started on the stuffy nose and headache😢
Dang I just got over a cold, this is cool to see.
loved the communciation via creative art
I love the videos you make about biology 🌼🇮🇳
The colds are getting worse, years ago they lasted a few days now they last weeks.
Loved you video's. ❤
But who animated this you didn't mention his name in credits.
I got cold yesterday and now, I got this recommend today.
As a virologist, and travelled to 75 countries in my career, I have had 54 vaccines of one type or another!
I love the animations in these videos.
The cartoon is a bit missleading because CRISP is an editing system for DNA and not a substance we can use.
Still, I think the message gets across.
I have beaten it last week it took me six days he was a med diff in my opinion 🎉🎉❤
ever since i wear mask everyday i never get a cold, that's almost 2 years now!
You've been lucky, masks don't do a thing to offer protection from viruses. Have a look at the research that proves it.
What a beautiful and fun animation!
Who else has a horrid cold more than a "mild inconvenience"?
As a university student having common cold with an exam tommorow, I see this as a knowledge I don't need for my tommorow's bio exam
As a coldologist myself, i can confirm this is true.
Watching this as a college student living at hostel missing family
I have controlled my intense cold problem. It is not the drug only that will help... My cold is now a history. Wow that is a great relief!😊
How? Please tell me i have the same problem , save my life bro 😅
Hi @Professor, I am an actual professor and I am currently with a cold. I do not want to miss a day from school because mid-term test is coming and my students need their classes. Tell me your secret!
Cold showers to strengthen your immune system
@@MafiosoARM not during the cold though
Scam incoming! Be wary! This guy lies don’t fall for their “secret” and don’t contact them
3 options, not just 2, the 3rd is the immune system itself, supporting it with good foods/ nutrients
Isnt the covid vaccine like not really effective except for the first strain or 2? Like 40% effective for the newer one?
(On Pfizer and Moderna, I don’t know much about j&j) yes, the first 2 doses are only effective towards the first strain, and are decreasingly effective towards the newer ones. The boosters, however, are effective against the newer strains and the most recent booster is supposedly effective against all strains. Thankfully, the fatality rate of the new strains is significantly lower, essentially making COVID on par with the common cold.
@@philswift7872 Haiti and Dominican Republic, a tale of two countries
It was a computer made vaccine. Gene therapy, not vaccine.
I don’t recall Covid ever having a high fatality rate, I mean I guess there was that one time a dude died of Covid moments after getting into a vehicle crash.
@@zooning-6843 didn't you know car cash is like a pre existing medical condition bro?
common cold is very light for me just a stuffy-sneezy/light runny nose & headache for a day or two , no medicines required although i have a combo pill of levocetirizine, phenylephrine & paracetamol for quick relief, but the flu results heavy fever, no energy , completely put to the bed for a week & a visit to the doctor, i had covid delta variant before vaccination even that was tolerable but flu put me on bed rest for a week.
I very rarely get common cold, and when I do, it’s very mild. Idk why.
great video ! keep on keeping on !!
So nice animation !
Kudos to whoever made this animation. Informative and funny 😁
Watching this while having a cold 😂
This was a great video!
Isn’t it weird I got a notification of this video while I have cold?
I used to get 4-5 colds each winter but I started cold bath in winters too and its frequency decreased to 1
Also turmeric milk helps a lot
Who else has an obnoxious cold and opened youtube to find this?
🙋♀️
Guilty! Had it for a few days now.
Everyone commenting here that they're having a cold is a testimony to this video.
I would prefer one day fever over colds, it's that irritating.
I love how #TedEd made a reference to Pac-Man at the end, who is the iconic video game character that made his debut in arcade games in 1980. Maybe they should include more video game characters.
"...out of 169 subtypes..."
Nice.
