- Follow alcohol on its journey through the body to find out how it causes drunkenness and why it affects people differently.
--
Ethanol: this molecule, made of little more than a few carbon atoms, is responsible for drunkenness. Often simply referred to as alcohol, ethanol is the active ingredient in alcoholic beverages. So how exactly does it cause drunkenness, and why does it have dramatically different effects on different people? Judy Grisel explores alcohol's journey through the body.

Ethanol is usually found in solution with water. The most common concentrations are 40% by volume or less, making water the solvent and ethanol the solute.

One family member, who gave up tobacco after using it for over a decade, said his mouth still waters decades later whenever someone mentions chewing tobacco. Another friend, who has been in recovery for a few years after using harder stuff, said she has to force herself not to go back to that life on a daily basis.

I am an Indian, and I have never really drunk. When I went to Europe, I was surprised to see that people simply do not socialise without alcohol.
Exactly! they cannot function without it! Such a shame they do not know how to enjoy the beauty of life.
Obviously you are not from Kerala or Goa.
same my friend! I didn't go to Europe but have watched Hollywood movies.
Here it is part of the culture, although you say we're alcoholics. A bottle of wine with dinner is not a crime!!! Neither the second bottle after dinner :D. Wine and beer are not considered as alcohol pretty much here, and that's why you can see even underaged teens drinking them on dinner with their parents. Yup, it is completely common and even in some countries absolutely legal. They are considered part of the meal, just like water is. It is what it is. Also for Europeans is pretty common to have better genes for drinking than other races, and simply just hold way more. Scientists tend to say that a bottle of vodka would definitely kill you, but watching the Balkan nations, as well as the Scandinavians, speaking first hand I can say that this is completely up to the person. An Asian could possible die, but a Scandinavian for example, he won't even puke.
@@avexcas Indians can compete quite well in this area - visit states like Goa or Kerala. They consider meal a part of the drink.

Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Never addictive. Thank you for sharing this point

unless another neurone catch your attention, link together and form memories
@@niconilo97 🤣🤣Never thought of that !
@@niconilo97 Not exactly how it works. When you receive sensory input (hear something, see something, smell something, touch something, taste something, or even think about something (which is what makes humans unique, the ability to conceptualize abstract concepts and learn from them)), it's first embedded in your sensory memory, which is where all sensory information gets located, then it enters the working memory if you supplement the sensory information with attention, and finally it's either encoded into short- or long-term memory, or it's forgotten. The difference between long-term memory, short-term memory, sensory memory, and working memory, is the strength of the connection between the neurons, and what part of the brain the firing pattern (the distinct "roads" that different neurons send electrochemical signals along, each pattern associated with a different memory) goes through. For example, you'll find that memories that go through the amygdala, the emotion regulation center of the brain, tend to be easier to remember, and tend to be long-term memories. That being said, memories in the working memory are still memories which by definition means that they've got an associated firing pattern aka a connection of neurons. You cannot have a conscious thought that isn't a memory, it's not only made into a memory once it becomes a long-term memory.
Once the memory is encoded, if it becomes a short-term memory it can be further strengthened into a long-term memory through the process of repetition, or if it becomes a long-term memory it technically remains in the brain indefinitely but it can still be "disturbed" by overwriting information or missing retrieval cues.
Basically, it's considered a "memory" even before you become aware of it. What you perceive as a "memory" is actually a "long-term memory," and what he described is referred to as "short-term memory."
Do you remember

Does anyone have an opinion on the effects of alcohol to autism or ADHD?
This explains why I’m not a fond of alcohol. My endorphins are almost not sensitive, I derive no pleasure from drinking
Yes we'r all different. I'm usually really sensitive to the gaba effect, alcohol make me sleepy, and desinhibate. But i never experience pure euphoria, it is just socially helpful, so never wanted to drink more than needed or to drink alone
Same here, it gives me no pleasure at all, no sensations, no high, no relaxation. So for years I could never understand the fuss about drinks until I realized not all people's bodies process them the same. I am also lucky to have been able to drink little without developing any addiction or habit, there are other people who get addicted after trying just once.

I don't have a lot of experience with alcohol so can someone explain something to me? I hear a lot about the behavioral changes caused by alcohol and I'd like some clarification on it. There are expressions like "what soberness conceals, drunkenness reveals" and other variations indicating that the behavioral changes from alcohol aren't really changes at all, but rather just your true self coming through as inhibitions loosen. Is this accurate?
One of the main reasons I'm curious is because on the two occasions when I've been intoxicated (the room was spinning and I couldn't quite walk straight so presumably not insignificantly so) I was with my boyfriend at the time. I was puzzled about the fact that physically I most definitely seemed to be drunk but mentally I felt no different whatsoever, like I wouldn't make any choices that I wouldn't have made when sober etc. My then-boyfriend said that he thought it was because I'm already my "true self" when sober, so even lowering my inhibitions with alcohol doesn't change anything because I genuinely was not restricting myself when sober. Does this sound like it could be true?
@@KreeZafi I believe you generally are the same but due to a decreased amount of fear and anxiety you often make choices that normally you would see as "too risky" or "embarrassing".
