Twinkie was the one giving the girls the early cues, she’s the organist the tenor. She’s the writer and the one who’s been giving her sisters their parts in the song.

I grew up in that era. I was a member of my state choir. And Dr. Mattie Moss Clark and Twinkie came to town to prepare us for our national convocation. Twinkie played the organ and Mother Clark rehearsed us. She was tough and reminded us we were singing for the glory of the Lord. And she wanted everyone to be focused on the music and lyrics. And if you were talking or chewing gum, she would take off one of her shoes and throw it at you! She did not play! She was SERIOUS about choral singing. What you hear in this song is the talent of the Clark Sisters and the guidance and discipline of their mother.

So they are all natural high sopranos and squalling is a technique you can use to help you belt out notes but these ladies can belt up to As and Bs of the 5th octave. They use squalling snd growling stylistically not because they have to.

I just recently discovered your channel and this reaction to the Clark Sisters and I am watching your other reactions to them now. I also subscribed! Great to see you react to this style of music and vocal talent. Grew up listening to them (I'm 45). As a former Baptist church musician, pianist, I appreciate your understanding, your authentic admiration and awe and your analysis. This was taken from a feature film music concert called GOSPEL. It featured Shirley Caesar, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, The Hawkins(another legendary fave) and of course, the Clark Sisters, back when Denise still sang with them. So this clip brings back memories and yes, it shows how influential they were/are and how inspired by their faith they were. Also, they were inspired by soul music, jazz, R&B and would listen to in secret (i.e. Stevie Wonder). Some of his sounds, chord structures, growling riffs and rythmic runs were often emulated. That, with the knowledge of some classical standards, traditional C.O.G.I.C. gospel, choir arrangements, etc from their mother, Mattie Moss, they had SO much informal training but also, SO much natural talent. Their sound is due to that and in part, due to the teaching, organ playing, arrangements and production of Twinkie Clark. They were ahead of their time, much like The Hawkins were as far as contemporary gospel goes. I am loving the Clark Sister reactions and hopefully you do more and even branch out into other Soul/Contemporary Gospel recordings and performances, both older and more recent. Thanks!

When they say Hallelujah they say it together but just one voice!! I know it sounds like one person that's how great they are.

Their Mom Did 3 Part Harmony In Choirs Back In The Day. They Were Their Mom’s Recorder When She Would Have A Song At Mid Night Or Early Mornings. They All Can Sing Soprano, They All Have Different Texture To Their Voice & All Can Growl.

None other than the incredible Twinkie Clark on the organ! And singing the tenor part I believe. She's also responsible for writing so many of the groups greatest songs

You have to react to them singing it in recent years. This song is still highly requested during their concerts. Just type in Clark sisters Hallelujah there's hundreds of videos.

Most of us church percussionists only use single kick pedals.

And they are all singing the hallelujah but because they are moving and twinkie who is singing the bottom note is sitting it’s easier for her to be heard
