Just so you know for me personally the queen of vocal runs is this woman. I got 3 in terms of vocal run queens that can't be touched
    Kim Burrell
    Jazmine sullivan
    Yebba
    Avery Wilson
The craziest people to do vocal runs for me bro 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Awesome reaction! The lead singers are Kim Burrell and Tim Bowman. Tim is one of my favorite male voices ever! He can go toe to toe with almost any singer we can think of. Creative, jazzy, unparalleled scatter, wide range owner, crazy ear, not afraid of singing it all, he is dangerous by nature.
Kim Burrell is a blessing! Whitney Houston's favorite singer, Beyoncé's favorite singer, Jazmine Sullivan's favorite singer, etc. She has influenced artists such as Adele, Amy Winehouse, Justin Timberlake, Jessie J, Brandy, Yebba, Avery Wilson, Tamar Braxton, Mariah Carey, Whitney herself, Destiny Child, Jessica Simpson, Faith Evans, Celine Dion, etc. To many, she is the greatest to ever do it. Queen of riffs and runs, creative like no other, play keys, THE sickest ear from any singer, vocal RANGE, her discography is fire. Some call her the vocal bible's vocal bible (because of her influence on Brandy).
In 2020, (when they recorded most of these videos) she got Covid-19 so her voice is still recovering from that.
Ps: the most famous run on tiktok nowadays is from her first album "Everlasting Life". She's still a singers' singer.

To answer your question about how they base their runs.. growing up in church you’re basically trained unknowingly how to sing that way because you learn the basics in singing in choirs.. then say you realize you can sing sing like sing solo.. then you listen to how other solo singers in your church sing… you listen to gospel artists music etc.. and then you graduate to the Praise Team .. which is what you were just watching you’re surrounded by MORE technical singers you eventually start imitating what you hear so much you it becomes more natural to you. Then you start singing background for more better aspiring gospel artists or just some friends who can sing really good they ask you to sing background so you’re constantly learning and hearing and trying different things.

Very similar to what I’ve heard the ‘gospel drumming’ comes from. Thank you for this, what a beautiful and organic way of developing and bringing out such talent. Literally just going off of feel 🙏

Great explanation! In some ways it’s actually the musicians who are following the singer, not the other way around. The singer’s innate musicianship often requires the musicians to catch up with the singer, who does what she/he does and takes the musicians along for the ride.

Fun Fact : Jazmine Sullivan IDOLIZES Kim Burrell . She said that shes studied her since she was a kid , most of her intricate runs and riffs are from her studying Kim .
The second song " yesterday " that they sang is one of my favorite gospel songs 💜💜💜
Ps.. pink shirt & some light denim jeans would go good for the concert !!

You’ll see the drummer’s plexiglass house in even the tiniest of storefront churches. It is a must have staple!

You’re correct: there is no audience. This was live streamed during the pandemic quarantine. Kim Burrell is known for her runs. I imagine they may have practiced the arrangement before the livestream but from what I’ve seen from her and other lead gospel singers, the musicians usually follow them or risk getting blasted.

Okay so you see what I was talking about how Yebba is directly influenced by her vocal style? She doesnt sound exactly like Kim but she emulates her singing ability. Thank you for reacting to my request. I knew you were gonna have a field day analyzing this one.😏 Also to answer your question, the lead singer basically takes lead of the song and the choir director (Tim) will cue based off of where he thinks the lead will take the song or just based on how it was rehearsed. Not all gospel ensembles do this, but it is common in more modern gospel ensembles/groups. If you came up in this environment its really easy for you to hear certain musical cues and adlib accordingly without missing your part in the arrangement.

This description is perfect. I was just gonna say ‘I think they just feel it’ 🤣🤣🤣

@@chrissspencer154 lol I was gonna say that but honestly its more nuanced than just “feeling”. So for someone who isn’t familiar this is the description I give them. Its so easy to say “Oh they just feel it.” If you already churchy🤣🤣🤣🤣.

Welcome to the world of KIM BURRELL! Beyoncé, Jazmine Sullivan, YEBBA etc ALL take inspiration from her! She is the run QUEEN! I dare you to react to more of her lol….

Runs are really not something you can teach…it’s learned from growing up singing, watching and listening to others sing. Most churches that have gospel singing allow lead vocalist to try different things with their sound and minister songs by how they feel. That’s where a singers style is developed, honed, and sharpened.
What you said at the end about the kick drum was spot on and only a sharp ear would know to listen to catch that. You got a new sub with me 🔥.
