What I love about Larry is how some trainers can only dream of becoming a gym leader, let alone a member of the E4 and yet Larry's like: "Yeah, unfortunately I have to do both."

i mean the e4 dont always get too much to do, beyond battling among themselves and probably paperwork i assume, but being a gym leader - the normal-type specialist, at that, meaning that hes more likely to get wave after wave of fresh faces while say grusha gets the luxury of a hint of peace every now and then from trainers getting demoralized and giving up well before the hardest gym in the region - i doubt he gets much rest
I love how even Larry's name is like extremely generic, like everyone has a cool made-up name and he's just Larry

Thing is, his lines are even better in the Japanese version. He said he uses Komala, a Pokemon that is always asleep, because that "what all salarymen truly desires".
And his signature move Facade, in Japanese is からげんき which means bravado, as in pretending you are okay even though you are not. When his Staraptor uses it, he said "allow me to show you the signature move of all working men."
It's the realest and funniest line in a Pokemon game ever.

Fun thing: The devs most likely made Larry a flying specialist in the E4 because Normal/Flying is the most common dual type in the series.

@@valarmis I thought I was being clever putting my Tauros up front, thinking he’d send in a normal type like before. Imagine my surprise when he threw that curveball at me and told me he’d be using flying types for the e4 challenge. Because of that mix up, I lost to Hassel because I had next to zero momentum when fighting Larry.

I absolutely appreciate how Larry is such an average person that he blends in with the NPCs around him so seemlessly. That's an incredibly clever detail that I'm glad was incorporated in the gym test.

His E4 team is a reference to how badly he needs a vacation, I love it. A blue sky with white clouds, palm trees, and exotic birds to watch as they fly by. It's bunch of colorful, tropical Pokémon reflecting the desire to just get away from it all and relax on an island beach somewhere.

Another aspect of Larry’s design I haven’t seen anyone acknowledge is his tie. It’s sky blue with cloud patterns on it, which foreshadows his secondary type and Elite Four position without having to compromise his average salaryman look. Such an excellent character design.
Another thing: he switches his shirt from gray to blue when he's in the E4

Larry spouts some surprisingly deep dialogue in his gym leader rematch, saying that whole people glorify shock value and excitement not many people recognize the value and fulfillment of an everyday life. Almost feels like him saying his piece against people who deride him for being plain (in universe or otherwise). It could honestly be commentary on a lot of things but either way I think it adds a lot of depth to an already enjoyable character
Yeah, you really can't beat the feeling of going home after a vacation. Cuz at the end of the day, simplicity, your normal, is the best.

I felt like it was a kind if general critique on modern life. With everyone posting their best side on instagram and wanting to prove themselves a lot of western/modernized youth has forgotten the value of hard work and living a normal life. I adored his normality and was so excited for that. I earned a law degree in my home country by hard work and dedication and I know exactly how Larry feels .. because I wasn‘t able to buy myself a new car like my high school friends who started to work other things/try to gain popularity. But I feel like now I am in a very strong mental place because of my achievements and security that comes with it :)
Sorry for the long comment - I just wage his ideology a lot and think that this is what lacks modern society.

Like my girlfriends I lived with were always so impressed and found it attractive how I basically functioned like a boomer :D the alarm goes off, I don‘t think about staying in bed, I get out, do my duties and stay focused. It was such a nice experience when my 5 year older ex gf just one day said that she feels younger and not as adult as me and knowing women that‘s probably strong haha
Larry is just a dude, and I love him for it. His community loves him, loves watching him, and you can tell he was a fucking *showman* when he was younger and had more energy. Not even the artist got this much of a crowd reaction.

As for other Gym leaders, I actually kind of like Grusha a lot more than I thought I would after seeing he had like, 5 lines?
Dude actually has a lot of personality baked into his super short appearance. He's clearly a proud, hardworking man who carries a deep passion for the mountains and for his sport. But he's struggling hard with the fact he can't really perform his sport any more because of his injury. Also he's an absolute dork who's trying to act cool for a 10 year old.
It's just too bad we don't get to see more of them. I hope they have plans for animation like how pokemon twilight ended up fleshing out a lot of sword/shield's characters.
I like Grusha because he knows he’s one of the last gym leaders to overcomes, kicks ass and that’s why he shows off to you in your gym battle, he’s so cocky but cute lol

Still struggling to decide who is my favorite gym leader between Larry and Iono. Funny as their personalities are total opposite.

For my money, the real highlight is what he says next, because it ties that gimmick into a solid philosophical point:

Fun Fact: Norman of the Hoenn League and Larry share the same placements in their respective Leagues and uses Normal Types and have Facade as the TM they give to the player.
Larry's literally the only Gym leader whose name and city I could remember when reach the Pokemon league. For a second I almost thought me choosing him during the Champion Interview is what made him an Elite Four member.

That would have been a really cool mechanic in the game. You say who gave you the most trouble and that gym leader is flagged as 3rd in the E4. It would also be a statement that each gym leader is skilled enough to be in the E4. I mean, it would make sense that for the Pokémon League to recognize you as a gym leader you would need to prove yourself to the league, and what better way than being a Champion ranked trainer?

We love Larry because almost anyone can relate to Larry.
The stress, the tiredness, that feeling of just not being outstanding, it's something most of us have felt before.
That, but also, no matter how tired and worn out you get, there's always Pokemon to lift your spirits. Larry loves Pokemon so much he's putting in double shifts just to do it.
Especially the devs and animators of this game...
Larry honestly feels like he has symbology with his pokemon, that each one represents something to him or about him. Komala represents a desire to rest, while Staraptor represents a desire to be seen as strong and cool, even if that's rather common. Tropius can represent a desire to go take a tropical vacation, while Cheerleader Oricorio could represent a desire to be adored and cheered on. But Flamigo and Dudunsparce are the two best fits for Larry out of all his pokemon. Flamigo is an odd duck out, metaphorically speaking, because it's a balloon animal or a plastic lawn flamingo. Something a bit strange in nature, but commonplace and ordinary. Like an overworked businessman as a gym leader or Elite 4 member. Meanwhile, Dudunsparce has every excuse to be special (strange appearance, yokai origin, digs in the ground...) but isn't. It's normal-type. Just like how all the other gym leaders have eccentric appearances and personalities, and Larry... isn't. Frankly, it feels like Dudunsparce should be Larry's ace in the gym.
That's a nice theory! It even lines up with Larry saying that he thinks he has a lot in common with them
Starraptor makes more sense as a Normal pokemon that is both normal/flying and you can catch at the very beginning of your journey.
But becomes a really powerful Pokémon with great potential, but overlooked by many with other cooler Pokémon or different types as people abandon Normal types in their team and forget how powerful they are.
And even switching to Flying types, which is like the 2nd type that is the most Normal as it's just birds. Is just -chef kiss-
Dude is just so relatable in the most boring and mundane way possible. Everyone feels like a Larry once in their life. But Larry shows there's nothing wrong being average.
In my eyes, the gym leaders in Scarlet and Violet have both a partner Pokémon that is new (Iono's Bellibolt, Grusha's Cetitan and Larry's Dundunsparce) and an ace Pokémon that isn't but Terrastalizes (Iono's Mismagius, Grusha's Altaria and Larry's Staraptor)
Fun fact: Cheer Leader Oricoro in the Violet Dex mentions how it is the most popular with children but is extremely rare to find.
So maybe the Oricorio represents Larry's desire to re-expirence his childhood? Or maybe he had that pokemon since childhood and as such doesn't see why its so important. Like a child owning a pure breed Yorkie. Its expensive, very rare, and very much sought after. But to the child, its just thier friend Rex.
@R. Knight the Sensu Fan forn is preferred by adults but also very rare. So I am going to guess that is same logic as cheerleader. But then, why is the pink one common?
I love how is ace being staraptor in his gym battle is used as hint to him being also a flying specialist as an elite 4 member made for a neat surprise when i realized it.
he's less of a specialist in flying types and more that he's just a good enough trainer that when his boss tells him to use flying types he can just make it work.

Larry specializing in both types is likely a reference to how the Normal Flying type combination is the most common type combination overall so the Flying type also suits him well.
He is my favorite gym leader because he is just so relatable like he doesn’t get paid enough for this type of vibe and his dialogue when he hands you the hm facade
Has no one else has noticed that Larry also uses facade as his main normal move and right before he uses he says 'in life its not always about being true to yourself' almost like he's putting up a facade

Ah, and here I thought "Facade deals double damage when you have a negative status condition, which is a metaphor for not eing true to yourself", why did I take such a complicated turn of logic, when the name is obvious?

Honestly, considering his signature move is specifically the one about putting up a strong facade under a negative status condition and being an officer worker is such a stereotypically boring, soulless, unfulfilling job, it sure is something that the Gym Leader whose whole thing is being an aggressively normal, everyday guy is the one who feels like he basically tells you “I have depression but I still have to drag myself out of bed everyday and go to work”.
Theirs a pain in his eyes most adults understand. He’s burnt out, tired but still keeps working because he needs to and even the act of smiling is hard because you just want to collapse and stop working for a little bit.
I love how his cloud tie and ace staraptor elude to his flying type team for the elite four. Also his ace is an extremely common typing for bird pokemon making it more normal

Notice how he’s one of the few trainers in the game who can use terrastilization with just 1 hand easily.

One thing that can easily be missed. Larry is also the regular at the diner who gives you the answer to one of the clues. And he's just so ordinary and fits in so well, you might not even realize the same guy who helped you is the Gym Leader.
Larry makes me feel that he has a great hidden strength that he doesn't want to use, like the guy can totally sweep all the paldea champions (including you) if his boss offer him a bonus for that, and you have to thank Arceus everyday for thats not the case 😅
Why do you think Geeta doesn't give him a bonus... else she loses her position to Larry.
Imagine they do dlc for SV where the gym leaders get control of legendaries/mythicals and Larry just ends up with both an arceus and a regigigas (without slow start) just to show that the truly is the best
@@diamondsam arceus is too much, but regigas would be fine. Slow start would represent how Larry seems tired and not very strong at first, but once he gets going he's a beast

I love that so many people love Larry. I think he actually adds a lot of depth to the Pokemon League as a business entity.
I love that he works for the Pokemon League, as he mentions La Primera as his boss. I love the idea that the previous Medali gym leader left/moved on to something else, and that space was vacant. I love the idea that he was assigned to cover that gym, presumably so the Pokemon League can find another, more permanent leader. I love the very "overworked, underpaid millennial/gen X pulling double duty" and "no it's fine, whatever" vibe to him, it's very relatable.
omg I always thought Geeta had Larry covering for an E4 but still at a Gym Leader salary, I never thought of the case where Larry actually was just a regular office worker and asked to cover both a vacant gym and E4 (probably at entry level salary still) which makes him even more Millennial
Larry is genuinely one of my favorite gym leaders ever, definitely a surprise favorite in this game. I feel for the guy, especially with the implication that he's putting on a façade. Makes me wonder if he used to be more passionate with battling but ended up squashing down his excitement in favor of making it his job when he grew up. Growing up to do what you love, but getting burnt out now that it's a job and not your hobby.
I don't think that's entirely true as he says his boss is concerned with his overtime and asked him to work less.
Larry still has passion for what he does to the point of over doing it. Which makes me feel like if he could afford it he'd be a full time Pokemon gym leader.
At the end where Geeta asks questions about the Gym Evaluation, I was dying laughing because I chose Larry for 75% of the questions
Larry is new favorite gym leader of all time! I love how normal he is.
Also, the fact that Larry’s Tera ace stands out by having the same primary typing as his other Pokémon (the other Gym Leaders have aces of entirely different regular types, to showcase the Terastal Phenomenon).
So his Normal/Flying-type Staraptor Terastallises into… a Normal-type Staraptor. It pretty much loses its secondary typing instead of becoming a completely different one, something none of the other aces do.
In a weird way, the whole thing is kinda reminiscent of a flight being grounded, which I’m sure Mr. Business Class has almost certainly experienced in his life…

It just dawned on me that his tera mon is the same type as the rest of his team. The grounded flight idea is nice subtle detail as well, even if it’s not intentional.

My favorite part about Larry is definitely how nobody talks about him, he just... is there.
You know the rest of the elite 4 beforehand even tho most of them have little reason to go out of their way to introduce themselves to you, yet you fight Larry in the Normal Gym and he never says anything about being in the Elite 4 - the ones you're gonna end up fighting later at some point since you're there collecting gym badges.
Like you said, nobody actually comments anything about who the Gym leader is or what he's like while you're doing the gym challenge either. You even talk to him and he just acts like he's got nothing to do with it, then acts all "well, damn, guess I gotta work now" when he gets called to battle you cause you got the order right.
I kinda like Grusha's forced retirement attitude too. He's like a gym teacher that is only a teacher cause something happened to their career as an athlete. Makes sure everyone knows all the time he wouldn't be doing this job if it wasn't for *the incident* and how nice you youngsters have it and take for granted. Definitely not what I expected when they revealed his concept art lol
Larry is by far my favorite normal type gym leader. Him being just an ordinary guy is so perfect.

They did a good job with the gym leaders this time around, I think. Most of them don't get to do much, but there's references to them sprinkled around the game and there's a few times we get to see them outside of their gym challenge, like Brassius showing up in one of the art lessons and of course Larry's appearance in the Elite Four. Larry and Iono are both great and both seem pretty appreciated, but I want to give a shout-out to Katy. She's a sweetheart and Bug is one of my favorite types. I liked the character development she got in her rematch where she laments having to use a weak team to help newbies get their first badge, so she decides she's going to start cranking up the difficulty of her gym so they have it less easy. Go get em, Katy.
I feel it fits the idea of gym leaders this generation being average people. Larry being the most average of them. I really like the idea they went with for the gym leaders this gen.

When you get asked about who your hardest gym leader was and then Larry appears in the Elite four I thought that was some sort of mechanic based on your decision. Turn out GF just knew he was the boss.
I legit jumped with joy when I saw Larry in the elite four. The moment was also exemplified since I chose him as the leader who was the most challenging so when he showed up I legit thought the league nabbed him last moment to specifically counter me and even though that wasn’t the case it was still a blast

My favorite scene with Larry is in the last Nemona fight at the end of the victory road story where you can see him pass by "unintentionally" he's there to enjoy a good battle like the rest and I love how he's trying to be nonchalant

My headcanon for Larry is that Geeta had insufficient number of people to fill all the gyms and elite four spaces, so she just went down to the league’s sales and marketing department and requested that the most skilled employee available will become both a gym leader and an elite four member.
I also like the subtle implication that Poppy got to become an elite four member because her art teacher grandpa Hassel asked Geeta to make it happen
Alternately, Larry was originally just made to fill the gym leader role when Geeta couldn't find anyone else suitable. But Larry ended up being better at the job than anticipated, so when an E4 vacancy had to be filled in time for the upcoming treasure hunt at the academy, he got saddled with the E4 role too.

Is Poppy confirmed to actually be Hassel's grandaughter? I just thought she called him grandpa because she's barely older than a toddler and he is a far older man that she interacts with frequently. If anything I thought she and Rika might have been sorta related given how Rika seems to be her minder.
@@rotciv557 not confirmed, I just assume that Poppy and Hassel are related because Poppy hasn’t called anyone else grandpa or grandma, and I haven’t seen anything strictly deconfirming any connection between the two. But it does look like Poppy got to be an elite four member due to a relative of hers convincing Geeta to add Poppy to the elite four
I wonder why she didn’t just ask Tyme (Ryme’ sister) to be an Elite Four member instead considering that she was once a gym leader before her sister Ryme took over for some reason.
He was the one I said I liked the most at the E4 test, so when he showed up I thought they just bring whoever you answered... Also the dialogue after the rematch gives him a greater push as a character!

@@ValunarTonix I said Iono as well because while I didn’t struggle against her, it took longer to defeat her once her Mismagius Teras because she doesn’t use psychic type moves with it.
They absolutely nailed the gym leaders this generation! I love all of them-they’re so human and unique and visually just so well designed. I hope gym leaders having personal lives and relationships with their towns and communities is a new trend that’s here to stay 🤞🏻

I feel the same way since while I really love how bubbly and adorable Iono is at the same time I enjoy Larry as well considering how well normal of a guy he is and the fact that he is the first character in the series to specialize in two different types simultaneously due to having a spot as both a Gym Leader and Elite Four member.

The characters are so good in S/V! They're all so well-designed and have fun, interesting personalities--I feel like the writers and designers produced some amazing stuff against all odds. Glad to see some creators not just harping on the graphical / technical issues and acknowledging the truly solid aspects of this game!
Yeah not gonna lie, when the first couple of trailers came out, I was disappointed with the designs because I was fond of sword/shield's flashy, stylized designs but now that I've played the game myself, I quite like the ideas behind scarlet/violet.
I was genuinely stocked to see him again in the Elite Four. He was already my fav Gym with a gym test that was actually interesting.

I love Larry and Iono for effectively opposite reasons, but they are easily my favorites of the Paldean gym leaders. Gotta say, I'm really happy with the characters of Scarlet and Violet.
I also love his philosophy that as much as you want an exciting adventure, in the end you want to go home and enjoy the normal things of everyday.
Iono and Larry are my favourite because both rapresents extremes on their own way making themselves the most memorable gym leaders, Larry being an EXTREMELY normal person who just does what he does without a complain, just a plain old fellow, and Iono being EXTREMELY energetic and excited that seems to ACTUALLY be into what she does, while on the other end Larry enjoys himself but a the same time wears a facade.
Both are unique in their way and actually stand out for a reason or another
Plus they are both in for the money, so that's a connecting feature👌
Not to mention Iono is adorable and a total cutie as well.
I love Larry despite him being the most.... Normal out of the gym leaders of his region, hell even in his speciality he's very normal.
Also the way he gives you Facade is probably the best line any gym leader dropped in this gen hands down

I absolutely love Larry, I always liked the overworked pessamistic type of character and I was excited for Larry ever since learning his name on the map because I immediately knew what I was getting myself into and even that exceeded my expectations. Might even be my new favourite gym leader in the series.

they stand out so perfectly for me in this generation, so many people like them
Iono as a streamer/TH-camr as she is, her personality perfectly delivered as a cheerful content creator, she dance cutely as her idle animation, heck even there is some superchat giving her 5000 yen donation during her livestream
giving her design to resemble a Vtuber, I was also having fun looking at Vtubers such as Pekora who act like they were in fact doing collab with her (and some of their superchats ironically supported Iono instead, lol)
Grusha gives me some kind of pity feeling towards him, we are skiing toward some slope during gym challenge, that give me some kind of feeling that he might be a really good snow boarder, but turns out he was getting accident before hence why he stopped snowboarding and there aren’t anything else for us during his gym challenge, not even a single Gym Trainer at all, his gym isn’t even located in town, but rather on a slope in snowy mountains
his entrance and battle theme are not stand out that much, even his gym was occupied by Cetoddle beforehand, but turns out his team was pretty strong, he also has a trap kind of design, despite being a man, he looks so pretty regardless, even Touyarokii loves him so much

I remember seeing Larry when I first went into the restaurant and thought he looked sorta important, then when I realized he was the gym leader, he immediately beat Iono as my favorite gym leader.
I feel like a point that is missed a lot is that, while Staraptor can be listed as a "normal" Pokémon, it's entire personality completely contradicts that of Larry's and is one of few Pokémon whose playstyle/moveset is a clear example of its personality. Staraptor is reckless to the extreme and will do anything to achieve it's way, in both its moveset (*brave* bird, double edge, close combat lowering defenses, final gambit, take down, endeavor) and (hidden) ability. This is a complete contrast of Larry, who is simply just normal. Staraptor, while being normal (fitting Larry), is also a complete contrast from Larry, thus allowing it to fit on either an extreme team (his elite 4 team) or a "normal" team (gym leader team)
I don't know Larry could be the selfdestructive type. All in to the point of burn-out. Flying high and crashing back to reality.
I really didn't think that deep of it due to how the other gym leaders used pokemon that seemed out of place in their teams until they terastallized them.
@@Cellmate part of an analysis is what you make of it,so over reading is common. But at the same time, there are instances of this in Pokémon, such as Oleana and her team of mostly traditionally "beautiful" Pokémon, with the exception of her ace, a Garbodor.

Well the Staraptor line is a com mon line so it still fits him well and it also allows him to use his ace for both teams.

When you have the examination before facing elite four I answered that the toughest gym leader was Larry and was extremly surprised that he was one of the elite four. For a second I thought that third member of the E4 is picked depending on your answer.
Larry’s the best, all his dialogue along with the surprise of him made me laugh to the point that now most of screenshots on the switch are just Larry complaining about his boss/job

Something that you didn't talk about is the genius design OF the little loose hair tuffs. Yeah, they're loose because his hair is so messy from overworking, but also, the hairs are stylized to look floaty and long (almost like feathers or plumage), a very subtle foreshadowing to him being the flying type elite four. Also, his colors match his partner Staraptor (except for the red, but whatever), and I think that's cute.
I too thought that he truly enjoys pokemon battles to such a great extent that he's not only a gym leader, but a member of the Elite 4 as well. His words and personality might not show much, but his actions tell differently.

Brassius was also a pretty refreshing take on a grass type leader, him and Larry being my two favorites this gen. Iono is both scary and cringe to me tho. I think it's the shark teeth
I remember someone saying how Larry having flying types as his second team is quite poetic. His flying team is like his freedom from his bland, boring self/job and one of the few ways he can truly express himself and escape (fly away) from his everyday self. I thought it was sweet.

The only missed opportunity with Larry is that he didn't also use Staraptor as his ace in the Elite Four. It would have been a cute hint/nod to the fact that his favorite restaurant also makes sandwiches that can change a Pokemon's tera type.
Also if you notice the way he throws the pokeballs is like he's playing baseball. Which is a nod to the trope of an office worker being on the company baseball team
No one's ever going to believe me on this, but during this gym challenge I wasn't paying attention so I didn't know the correct pass code. I guessed the correct answer for the gym on my first try.
I went to the restaurant immediately thinking it was a good place to start and guessed right by accident
I chose Larry during the Elite 4 test and thought that whatever you answered was what became the 4th Elite 4 member. Never actually realized he is the default regardless of choice. Definitely my favorite by far.
The 'intermission' (as I like to call it) when he's about to terastallize had be boppin! Bass guitar goes hard!

I remember battling him for the first time and being surprised at his design. He looks so normal that it just fits his type. And the best part was that when he got his staraptor out he knocked out over half my team (I was doing an only ghost type run). He still remains one of my favorite gym leaders.
