As a GM, Ron Hextall was a 180 degree opposite of what he was as a feisty, take risks, in your face, hack the forwards blocking his view battler of a goaltender.
There should be more context why Patrick was likely selected over Makar. Patrick was supposed to go 1st overall, but due to injury in his draft year he missed a lot of time and then Nico Hishier had a great year in Halifax and in the world juniors. Devils surprised everyone and picked Hischier. Flyers scouts likely were thinking Makar because they never thought Patrick would be available. Now the supposed best player becomes available, you're going to take him. Even Dallas passed on Makar with the next pick (granted it's Heiskanen but Makar still is better). It's so difficult to project how a 17 or 18 year old will pan out. I think this speaks more about Flyers development of prospects than it does drafting.
If you track back to what a complete mess the Flyers were in talent wise, prospect wise and cap wise when Hextall first arrived he did an incredible job re-building that team. Two years ago (a year after Hextall left) Philly had the defacto best record in the regular season with talent on the rise, picks galore and finally, a good young goalie in the system. Hextall was fired over THREE years ago and Clarke is blaming him for the current team and for not drafting Makar? Will he be blaming Hextall in 10 years too? The only reason Philly even had a shot at Makar was that they won the draft lottery (good luck) and the main reason Patrick hasn't developed is injuries (bad luck). You can't blame a GM for things beyond his control. Bobby Clarke is the perfect example of a former hockey playing blockhead who benefits from the old boys club and wouldn't be able to find work on a Junior B team had he not been a great NHL player.
I find it galling that he publicly blasted Hextall the way he has, instead of keeping their disagreements in house. But that's Clarke, I suppose. If NONE of the scouts wanted Nolan Patrick as he (Clarke) said, then why didn't Clarke intervene, sit down with everyone, and arrive at a consensus amongst the group.
Hextall looked like a genius because he got rid of some bad contracts and because he focused on a draft first mentality, which honestly, given the cap situation the Flyers where in, was the only viable option, nothing new or revolutionary about it. His draft picks, with few exceptions, where not outstanding, injuries or not. He had the guts to choose and defend a coah like Dave Hakstol, the equivalent of a draft pick nobody believed in while in a supposedly weak draft he went all in with the consensus number two in Nolan Patrick, ignoring Makar's talent. I don't want to make comparisons with previous GMs, I'm just looking at what Hexy did to shape the Flyers future and the reality is that his foundations were average at best and if the team is far from being successful that's his responsibility too.
30 teams. It's going to come down to where players want to be and cap savings such as income tax. Tampa .. the Florida . Then Tampa cups coming to a tv screen near you
While it sucked losing Schenn, Hextall got two first rounders which turned out to be really good picks with Frost and Farabee. They are both going to be stars on this team. It is tough what the kid Nolan Patrick has gone through and not being able to stay healthy but the media kept sh*tting on him when he’s still young. Of course Bobby Clarke wouldn’t know anything about that because he traded every good young prospect that came to the Flyers while Hextall was building this team in the right direction by not trading away assets. His only real bad move was getting rid of Chief. Clarke is so hell bent on the Flyers continuing the 70s tradition which is probably a big reason reason the Flyers haven’t won a Stanley Cup for so long. It’s going to be hilarious when Hextall wins a Stanley Cup for the Pens after these sh*tbags got rid of him for being patient and drafting good young players.
Being committed to the draft and assets is fine if you know what you're doing. Hextall didn't. I disagree with some articles that Hextall really wasn't a bad Talent Evaluator, he was just stubborn and didn't listen to his s Scouts. No he was both Stubborn and a bad Talent Evaluator.
Honestly, I thought Hextall did a good job. The Flyers were in cap hell and had empty cupboards. He cleared a lot of cap space, and at one of the World Juniors, Philly had a large number of prospects playing. Patrick was the consensus #1 or #2 pick. Patrick that year had injury issues, and should have spent an extra season in junior. Hextall picked Carter Hart. When he left, he gave the Flyers a lot of chips.
I thought Clarke was just a bum boy in the Flyer organization. He had the ear of former owner Ed Snider, when those Snider and Clarke would talk bout the good old days of the 70s. Really don't know what Clarke has offered to the Flyers in past 30 years. Well at least as a Flyer executive he gets to go to games free.
