John Steinbeck is one of the most important authors of the 20th century. In this video I summarize and review three of his best short novels, The Pearl, The Moon is Down, and Cannery Row. Hope this is helpful!

We read The Pearl in public school.
Keeno could have supported big business and handed over the pearl. As a result is it now banned for being socialist?
I also read Tortilla Flat in high school, but at home. Yes it was better.

Captain Loft never engenders any sympathy, though other soldiers do. Loft is the classic Nazi robot who cares only about climbing and currying favor with the government, and even his own men want to "punch him in the nose" as Steinbeck writes. He also didn't write it as a novel but as a piece of propaganda, a letter to occupied countries in WWII. It is actually almost an instruction manual of Steinbeck's ideas to chip away in small ways at the Nazi machine. It also has great relevance today with the Ukrainian plight.

I had to read The Pear in High School. At that time I thought it was a story about a dude who finds a pearl. Now I understand that it is really about a dude who finds a pearl, and the evil capitols system creates systemic greed, one thing leads to another, and a bullet (bad) kills someone. Then, like the Blue Dimond in Titanic, the pearl gets tossed into the sea. The capitalist overlords lose the pearl. The dude loses the peal. If E-Bay existed back then, Keno would be on his boat listening to Yacht Rock.

Capitalism is human nature. Barter is the original trade, I have a fish, and you're hungry. You have a pretty rock my wife will like. Let's trade. That is capitalism.
It is true capitalism can be perverted. That is where we, as a society, demand fairness. In the legal system it is known as the covenant of good faith and fair dealing, and it is the underpinning of a just and fair society. Government's role, then, it to ensure a level playing field, to act as a referee, to umpire the game of competition. That's all.
