  • While growing up in Belize, Creole Bread was a staple part of our diet. It was made every Saturday and my grandmother's house by my Aunt Aileen. In the late 1980"s she visit us in America and showed us how to make this delicious, soft bread. The bread is not too sweet, so it can be eaten with any meat dish, cheeses or jams and jellies.

    Wow!! So glad you guys were spared 1st of all, and so happy you found me. Congrats on all the good food you guys had to weather the storm. I do remember those days when we were holed up waiting for hurricane as a child growing in Belize. We just took a trip to Utah and we took bread, bun and poda bun. It was fun and we never ran out of food.

    Thank you for the recipe. I tried this last night and it came out wonderful. However, instead of using active yeast I used instant yeast. The bread was soft and light and my family enjoyed it. Hats off to you!

      @TheBarePantryShow  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheBikerGurl Instant yeast works just as good as active dry, except you don't have to let that rise first. I'm glad yours came out great. We worked for about 8 months back in 1988 to perfect this recipe. So glad to share it with the world.

    Hi Greta. Thanks for the idea about putting the yeast in the milk. I use to to it that way when I was making the buns for sale, but I stopped after I had a few bad episodes of stale yeast and wasted not only my yeast, but milk. Back in those days I use to buy yeast by the pound though and the last batch of it would go bad. I know it's so fattening that's why I made it for the show and gave them away promptly. :)

    This bread is awesome and easy to make (I had never made bread before). Last March I spent a week in belize and fell in love with the food! I had fryjacks almost every morning, and rice and beans, stew chicken, ducunu, and fried fish several times. I had some coconut bread very similar to this from a street vendor on Caye Caulker. However, it had a stronger coconut flavor than this bread. What would be your suggestion to make the coconut taste stronger without changing the bread too much?

    Hi Fitange, lets just say I didn't do well on my diet on Sunday when I made those breads. You are right, the coconut milk is the secret to making it moist. I'll do another bread soon that even though made with yeast they only have to rise once. Some of my old customers saw the show and wanted me to go back into business. :)

  • @MJEmjay

    This recipe like all others I have seen online are all modern day version of creole bread not the traditional old school version and done only on a firehart. P.S. I don't always have access to firehart in the US but I personally will never make creole bread if not its not done with real coconut milk grated fresh. I remember very well how my Mom and grandmother made both bun and bread and were always sold out. At first we used to go out to sell as kids and we got to the point where people would be on waiting list to pick up bread and but.at our house. Traditional creole bread has a certain texture not seen in any of the online version of Belize Creole Bread. Perhaps on day I will share.

    Thanks Sweetie, would love to learn some Puerto Rican foods too. My mom is coming back from Belize tonight and I'm so excited because she says someone sent me 2 Nicaraguan recipes to try...I love all the Caribbean culture. I think European, Italian and even Soul food is represented widely on t.v and the NET, but not our Caribbean foods. So I'm gonna persist until it's mainstreamed.

    Hi Fitange, I love that bread. I normally get it from the SDA people at our local city fair once a year. Are you Belizean living abroad in Australia or are you Australian? There's another TH-camr who lives in Australia that has a very successful cooking show. I am a big fan of his show and fashion my show somewhat off of his. I simple adore him. :)

    Hi again Fitange, Silly me, I thought I told you the name of the show. It is the Onepotchefshow. I adore the host David. I just wish he'd show us more face time on camera. Thanks for the names of the others I'm looking them up and subscribing right away. I love looking at other cooking shows as much as I love making mine. In my other business (the one that feed us :) I have a famous Australian customer too. Kevin Murphy the hair care guy. We silk screen his bottles. Wonderful to have you.

    I make creole bread also but I put the yeast in the coconut milk whisk it really well and warm it in the MC and let it sit in the MC for 10 mins without opening the door. I also let my dough raise three times. I also do a few other different steps than you, but your bread looks great, I swear I could smell it from here. I don't make bread too often as I know how fattening it is. Wish there was something to take the fat out of it. Hmm? Keep making the show.
