Not being an "Industry Standard" doesn't mean it's lower quality or lacking features, it means it's not a part of workflow that industry is commonly using. This working pipeline was formed before Blender became this big. And this will not change until Blender will be obviously better than something in this pipeline. Even being on the same level is not enough to justify the changes.
To be fair. It's not. Not being industry standard doesn't mean it can't do incredible good looking stuff.. It only means the industry is not using it at large. The industry being, cinema or games. Which they are not. Big special effect companies are and probably will stick to Maya for most big budget movies. Games are using a lot more 3D Max and Maya than anything else.. and Zbrush for sculpting. It will be industry standard the day ILM makes Star Wars and Marvel in Blender.

I love the Gibsonesque style of your work in that your setting simply exists. There is no exposition dumps, no screeds of lore, no narrative history labyrinths for the viewer to navigate. We are simply in the same world the character is. Familiar enough to be intelligible, yet alien enough to be unsettling. Why is the city shut behind a vast wall? Why are giant crabs roving the wastelands? Why have all the plants withered and died? Who knows, this is simply the way the world is, and we as the viewer must accept that in order to participate.
This was a gorgeous and wonderful ride! It's been lovely seeing it all come together from bits and pieces you've shown through tutorials and stories. Now we just have to figure out how to make another three years pass quicker! 😬
There is paid content that doesn’t look, perform and feel as good as this. This is astonishing. Netflix, please give this man a proper budget! We need more of this work!
With the fans he has - the patreons which I am one of - he now has the $$ and therefore the freedom to do it exactly how he sees it without ANY bias from the corporate heads. This is the BEST time now - don't let greedy hands taint this. I know from experience how that can truly ruin whatever vision you might have had. Plus Ian likes having his hands ON this project - once they lure you in you lose that immediacy of creation. Big guns are good for one thing - distribution and possibly marketing. That's it.
@@FrankCappello_official a lot of the times Netflix doesn't actually tell the people what to do, they give them creative freedom.. so honestly he could flourish given a dedicated crew and budget. @@contracide There's an episode in Season 1 that's partly live-action and animation. Also, this film in particularly is mostly CGI/VFX stuff anyways except for the human elements. So, it counts.
Not only does this look amazing and alive, it's also a world with depth and story to it that becomes more and more apparent the further you watch. It keeps giving you bits of information about itself without outright telling you anything. A stellar work of CGI and storytelling.
When Hollywood knocks -- and they *will* -- take their money, but settle for nothing less than total creative autonomy. Dynamo Dream demonstrates a ferocious level of skill and tenacity. Bravo!
Unfortunately, when Hollywood knocks, they don't offer total creative autonomy. What they offer is a pile of money and a team of "producers" to help you make what the studio wants.
I probably should be pointing out the how revolutionary this is in so many levels but I just can't get over the fact that even the crab from the arena had a story arc.
This is just, whoooa! I mean it. No ILM behind, no big studios no big budget? Amazing! The only thing I can say is congratulations (and keep going on)!
I am 60 years old I have seen a lot of movies I've seen a lot of science fiction. I cannot believe how real some of this looks. It's almost like it was literally filmed in reality. I often look for things that will take me away maybe things I can go to sleep by at night not that they're not exciting it's just these are things that relax me thinks I love to watch and oh my goodness this is just incredible this is true art.
16:53 *Mech swings sword at giant crab. Crab catches and steals sword.* "Oh, uh, *ahem*... What an unfortunate turn of events for NutLad, with such a pathetic manoeuvre, umm..." Everything here is brilliant - just totally blown away.
Great work. Even the acting. She moved and interacted with the CGI world as if she not only was in it, but was comfortable in it as well. Like she's actually been living in it for some time. Little about her environment surprised or distracted her yet she was aware of it all.
Its crazy how one person can make something entire studios with millions of dollars can't. This world looks so real and vibrant! You literally built an entire world from nothing!
This reeks of passion. I can't imagine how proud you are of making something like this. YT comments sections are usually littered with compliments and enthusiasm that the nihilist in me gets really downer about. But this is truly incredible. I do not say that lightly. The dialogue was wonderful. Thank you for all of it, and to everyone who toiled to bring this alive.
And upset even more... Just look at amount of work and imagine somebody to make something as big. Such amount of work will destroy anybody from the start. And if someone will start to compare his work with that, its can make them feel even more miserable. Just other side of coin ;)
Ian, I love it! Around 3 minutes in, I forget what’s real and I’m fully emerged in the story. The acting is actually very good, I’m surprised. I never get passed bad acting, it throws me off. I enjoyed this.
The detail in the background is mindblowing. Also I love the fact that the giant crab won the duel and is on its way to terrorize the town with his opponent's sword.
This is just incredible! The direction, art design, effects, casting, and writing are all just perfect! This is better than the last 9 Star Wars movies. How has this not been picked up by Netflix yet? Hollywood spend millions churning out hot crap and an independent writer/director does something like this! Instant fan. I will be showing this to everyone.
This is feckin’ mad. Absolutely brilliant. Echoes of Bladerunner but this goes so much deeper. I’m blown away at the detail. I have to watch it in slow motion and another 100 times to really appreciate it. Each image is stunningly, beautifully rendered and thought out. TY so much for this.. What a work of art.

This looks amazing, the detail on each scene, the mix between real and CG, it looks really good. Congratulations man!
No esperaba encontrarnos por aquí camarada gaseoso
Corridor Crew sent me here. If there was such a thing as magic in this world, this is it.
There is paid content that doesn’t look, perform and feel as good as this.
This is astonishing.
Netflix, please give this man a proper budget! We need more of this work!
Why invite Netflix to ruin something this amazing?
With the fans he has - the patreons which I am one of - he now has the $$ and therefore the freedom to do it exactly how he sees it without ANY bias from the corporate heads. This is the BEST time now - don't let greedy hands taint this. I know from experience how that can truly ruin whatever vision you might have had. Plus Ian likes having his hands ON this project - once they lure you in you lose that immediacy of creation. Big guns are good for one thing - distribution and possibly marketing. That's it.
@@FrankCappello_official Yeah, aside from the fact that we're not gonna get another episode until 2024.
and he needs to hire a writer
@@FrankCappello_official a lot of the times Netflix doesn't actually tell the people what to do, they give them creative freedom.. so honestly he could flourish given a dedicated crew and budget. I'd love to see this turned into a show with multiple seasons and what not (despite the mysterious ending, I am already invested into this story/world).
It is completely out of my mind to imagine, how such great piece of short movie can be procudect. Clear, its all computer based, but still everything needs creativity to build these virtual realities piece by piece. And thats not all. There is so much atmosphere created! Wonderful !!!
This is just insane! 🤯

Incredible would be an understatement.
wow austin, film riot, clint, corridot, cgmatter, gleb alexandrov??? ian you are truly on the top of not only the cg world but indie filmmaking world....
Finally, the long awaited is here.
It's finally here!!!!
Hii
Hi guys
*nut-lad😉 (16:07)
The entire phone call to Jackie is my favorite scene. It's hilarious, it's creative, it adds intrigue, and it absolutely sounds like conversations I've heard been couples.
Holy shit, like every single shot it soo overdeliverd. Probably every single frame could be made a poster out of.
Fantastic job dude.
Yeah I was freeze framing almost every few seconds thinking the same thing.
I am 54 years old. I have not been so swept away since 1982 ! A magnificient piece of Art. A true lovechild of Bladerunner with ALL my favorite artist from Metal Hurlant /Heavy Metal magazine as parents..or Grandparents. There is so much visual legacy from Syd Mead, Moebius, Chris Foss, Jim Burns, Juan Gimenez, Enki Bilal, Serpieri and a few more I cannot recall right now...but in a very refined version. Mindblowing. Downloaded this gem and will cherish it ! There is NOTHING like retrofitting ! Organic. Decadent. And utterly realistic.
Can i second everything Mr Hansson just said?

Brilliant work!!! It's so great to see such an awesome story tie together all the amazing CG you've been teasing(and teaching)for years!

you also a good creator.
Good Luck Shutter Authority!
You know what I really hate about videos like this? That they're not longer!! I absolutely love this. Original story, original ideas, scenery and cinematics better than 99% of Hollywood trash. This is what film making should be.
Omg, what a beautifully crafted world and Episode Ian!
The work definitely payed off. I love how you blended Real Footage with the CGI so perfectly. Special Shoutout to the Lighting which is top notch.
Music was oddly different but very fitting. Can't wait for Episode 2, even if it takes another 3 years.^^
Great job!
He likes avatar AND Ian Hubert ! Elca, you're a good man :')
Did not expect Elca to be here, what a small world
Reading the comments is like watching a scene from avengers, with every TH-cam channel i like comming in to commend:P
Wow, ok this really blew me away! The visuals were stunning and love the music too! I could see this world easily be turned into a Netflix series or something 👀
:)
That's a great idea - contact Netflix. This is just the pilot.
Netflix?
Don't ruin a good thing.
@@Toleich I think this amazing work deserves to be seen by the masses. Any streaming platform will do, but Netflix is huge and reaches a lot of people.
This must turn into a netflix series actually, thats what this thing deserves.
"The market was built over the Stevenson river, named after regional mayor John River"
I'm not letting a joke like that go by unacknowledged
Also loving the "open" sign switching to "nope" at 9:16
@@theguywithevids I was just about to comment that too. That's so good
Yeah, the river joke cracked me the hell up. 🤣 Also some of the captions, like *[Ludicrous title sound]* and *[obnoxious inescapable party boat music]* were just... 😂
@@Bakamoichigei I feel like the party boat one might be anecdotal, since their studio is right near the water around Seattle and Port Orchard haha.
Timestamp? I missed it
The attention to detail, _millions_ of millions of details.
I'm 58 and not much blows my mind anymore, I am sitting here with my jaw on the ground, struggling to find words...
I guess, all I can say is, I was rooting for the crab.
Just kidding: astounding, amazing, spectacular, visually delightful, intriguing, entertaining, heart pounding, monumental and memorable.
I don't know why, but somehow i get the vibes from ghibli's world in spirited away (i know that's weird). it's more like a dystopian future version of it. I just get to enjoy every bit of what Ian is showing! SO DAMN WOAH!
Spot on! It IS a dystopian Ghibli! I live it so much!
Probably b/c of the unique creativity/liveliness of the character design?
I feel like the way the city is built resembles the bath house a lot
I think it's the attention to detail in the backgrounds ... just sayin' but crazy amount on detail even on few seconds takes.
the ferry!
My Dynamo dreams have come true.
9:16 The "OPEN" Sign changing to "NOPE" made me crack up so bad.
I was marveling if that was a mistake in my head because that scene was never finalized.
Yeah. Genius.
Hah, lol. Thanks
@@AwesomeBlackDude ? Yes, it was. End of the next scene, after the bus leaves. They give you just enough time to ponder it a bit before confirming.
Yep , I was like " why hadn't I ever seen that little turn . before or thought of it myself .

It is so beautiful to see all your past work come together like this...wow...just wow!!
"The market was built over the Stephenson River, named after the Regional Mayor, John River."
I laughed. Brilliant.
This is absolutely incredible! I am amazed by all the imagination, creativity, and thoughts you put into each of your CG films. Awesome work!
I love those scenes where you move cameras slowly and smoothly to show us a complicated and gorgeous Cyberpunk world.
This should be a Love, Death, Robot episode. Breathtaking!
But this is live action.
@@contracide There's an episode in Season 1 that's partly live-action and animation.
Also, this film in particularly is mostly CGI/VFX stuff anyways except for the human elements. So, it counts.
I was gonna say the same thing! This one is more like a clean version episode haha
9:15 Damn!! I love the OPEN > NOPE sign idea!! :D I've never seen anything like it!
Also 18:32 "PREMIERE LATIN EDUCATION: Lorem ipsum dolor..." xdd
Me too. I can't remember where, but I have seen one IRL, probably a homemade sign.
What timeline is this? In mine, crabs are only a minor nuisance in some parts of the world. We are hoping to keep it that way.
Ok
That's what flame throwers and butter are for.
Imagine the victory feast
Time is an illusion, albeit a very convincing one.
Boooooooo...!!!!!
Not only does this look amazing and alive, it's also a world with depth and story to it that becomes more and more apparent the further you watch. It keeps giving you bits of information about itself without outright telling you anything. A stellar work of CGI and storytelling.
Alternate title Episode 1 : Return of the Crab King - DYNAMO DREAM
Attack its weak spot for massive damage
When Hollywood knocks -- and they *will* -- take their money, but settle for nothing less than total creative autonomy. Dynamo Dream demonstrates a ferocious level of skill and tenacity. Bravo!
Unfortunately, when Hollywood knocks, they don't offer total creative autonomy. What they offer is a pile of money and a team of "producers" to help you make what the studio wants.
When Hollywood knocks you slam the door on their nose.
Amazing. I'd wait 3 years for you any time ❤️

Great work. Even the acting. She moved and interacted with the CGI world as if she not only was in it, but was comfortable in it as well. Like she's actually been living in it for some time. Little about her environment surprised or distracted her yet she was aware of it all.

I can't imagine how proud you are of making something like this.

Just look at amount of work and imagine somebody to make something as big. Such amount of work will destroy anybody from the start. And if someone will start to compare his work with that, its can make them feel even more miserable.
Just other side of coin ;)
Yuuuup, this is scary impressive, and slightly demotivating, hard to be proud of a few days work when this exists
