What The Hell Happened To Bionic Commando?

- It’s been well over 3 whole decades since the likes of Nathan Rad Spencer came swinging into our arcades and on our Nintendo Entertainment Systems with that special brand of platforming and shooting that only a Bionic Commando game could’ve given us. The game was a huge hit at the time in the arcades for it’s unique grappling mechanic that would send you swinging and flying over gaps. As such, an NES port was made.
While this version upped the level count, the important thing was that the game’s concept and fun-factor carried over to the console space effortlessly and the franchise would grow in popularity steadily for the next couple of decades. Despite that, where do we see the franchise at now?
It’s more-or-less in relative obscurity at this point. I'm sure there are people out there who know what Bionic Commando is and are loosely familiar with it, but obviously it's nothing compared to what it used to be at least in terms of its popularity. But why did this happen? Why would a franchisee that was so popular that justified several sequels and even a remake now find itself relegated to the ashbin of gaming history as it is? I remember buying Bionic commando while I was in Japan, then I came home and played it and thought it was so fun. Still have some amazing memories swinging around that destroyed metropolitan.
Yeah no game gives me the feeling of swinging and shooting like this game did
How about the wiretap jump-scares? Walking into the room, no music playing, selecting wire tap, then loud siren goes off and enemies pour into the com room - scared the hell out of me almost every time!
Im currently playing this game ... loving it ..it must get a sequel..
I really liked playing the 2009 game, it had a learning curve that made you feel like a badass after a while. Taking down multiple big robot enemies without ever touching the ground was a good feeling. And also that I had never heard of or seen anything about the old games made me enjoy it more I guess.
Same, it was hard to learn the mechanics but when you finally mastered the swing it was awesome how fast you could travel
Agreed. This is actually probably my favorite game of that generation, just due to how much fun the gameplay mechanics were. I don't really ever put stock in video game stories in the event that they don't interest me, and good gameplay means I can enjoy it regardless. I certainly wouldn't play BC *for* the narrative, but it certainly didn't deter me because I was having so much fun. I play through it like one a year just because I have such a great time swinging around and throwing people like a mile into the air. It's a blast. :D
I agree completely. This game was and is still awesome! The gameplay required skill and felt so satisfying when you got good at it. Yeah the game has some flaws like the radiation not being implemented well and sure the story isn't great but the game is just so much fun that it makes up for it.
I can remember the exact moment when the controls clicked for me, it was roughly 1/3 of the way through, and my opinion instantly changed from "this is a disappointing time waster", to "this is the best game I've played in years!"
I think this was the main problem with why it got bad scores. Now because of the laziness, and short attention span of gamers, we'll most likely either never get another game, or have to wait 20 more years to get one. Such a shame.
Yeah it really was cool once you get familiar to the swinging mechanic . I also liked some of the actions he did . If you press the punch button near a sniper who is near an edge , you would kick him off while saying something badass!
That "twist" at the end of the 2009 game still gives me a good laugh to this day.

Still, I hoped that a Bionic Commando 2 would come out to explain that plot "twist" in more detail.
I loved this game. Multiplayer was so much fun.
I played the original as a kid and the 2009 game religiously. The freedom being able to grapple and swing was always so fun. I hope they revisit it someday.
Bionic commando rearmed was amazing. That had some of the best couch co-op gameplay ever made

Maybe we'll never see a BC sequel but I really wanted a third game in the spin off Bionic Commando Rearmed, it was one of the best yet underrated forgotten platforming gem that nobody talks about. I hope Capcom will acknowledge it someday.
Same here. I have gone as far as make up my own storyline and setting for a BCR3.
What I would really like is if Capcom re released BCR1 and 2 physically for the Switch, and maybe Strider 2014 while they are at it so that these games can remain playable in the future should they be discontinued in digital stores. BCR1 is already difficult to play on Steam and it never was made backwards compatible on Xbox One online store.

Bionic commando 2009 is one of my favorite games of all time the gameplay is incredible and when online mode was actually kicking it was insanely fun
I feel like insomniac could reboot this franchise. Apply the Spider-Man web slinging and a good story with some cartoon cell shaded graphics.
I always loved dying to radiation that popped in as a blue cloud half past after you were dead. Turning Spencer into some dude with the personality of a cinderblock. And the twist ending, I’m genuinely afraid if they got to do a sequel he would have had a cybernetic leg and the twist was that it was once his cat.
Bionic Commando 2009 was a solid but flawed foundation for next gen Bionic Commando. I was confused as to why they didn't improve on its foundation. Cashcom annoys me.
The game honestly looks fun but maybe add some more close quarters combat. I also think that having that same feel that western games had at the time just doesn’t fit the tone this series should have.
Bionic commando was the best third person game ever

This is the first I have heard of Bionic Commando Rearmed 2. How have I missed this? I used to love playing the NES Bionic Commando at a friends house and I believe I still have the Gameboy version. I bought the first Rearmed as soon as it came out. I would love to see the Bionic Commando franchise continue, as a side scroller.

I grew up playing the nes game. When I heard about the 2009 version I was super excited, and for the most part it did not disappoint. It was a lot of fun with all kinds of nostalgia thrown in.
There were a few things along the way that I wasn't crazy about, amd the whole wife plot twist was... um... yeah...
To this day, I still don't know how I feel about the way the story went with Joe.
So yeah, I liked the game and wanted to see what happened next. Oh well.
One of the top 5 best games I've ever played. One of them is Prototype and Company of heroes.
I own Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 digitally on Xbox, and i just bought Bionic Commando 2009 Xbox 360 off Ebay. I wanted to check the game out and also to add to my collection. I have a brand new X360 to play it on aswell. I collect gaming consoles. Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 is a fun game also
Capcom decided to pull the plug, and decided not to trust the western developers that's what happened
This did look good when it was first shown. Only issue was that redesign.
it was fun but trust they needed to introduce stealth modes, like stealth takedowns or stuff. it was all shooting and it would probably make it better for people like prototype 2

It was! I was addicted to that game. Got all trophies two times, played the story about 10 times and spend hundreds of hours in multiplayer.
It's really not that great. Mediocre at best.

Same. Had first on the leaderboard almost the whole time. ElGrenado was what I played on back then. I remember tons of people that were way better than most. Bigwebdave, pyroclasticflow were always ones to watch out for. 40 to 50 kills a game from a handful of us is what killed online play. New people came in and got spanked sooo hard by the more experienced, and couldn't get the hang of it fast enough before frustration set in.
This had several flaws. Pistol is so weak that it doesn't have infinite ammo to compensate for the lack of rare ammo for any other weapons which you rarely get to keep. The robot arm is ridiculously huge and the game has a lot of instant death areas if you fall anywhere. Checkpoints are also terrible.
You cannot save your world from being ravished by Nathan Spencer.

I remember the GameOVerthinker complaining about the version from the later 2000's.
I have fond memories of the NES game, though it was so hard I never managed to beat it. When Capcom announced the 2009 game I was so excited and actually is not a bad game but it has 2 and big flaws: 1) so linear. Why I can´t explore the environment and stages? and 2) the story. Looks like Capcom tried to make the franchise more "obscure" or darker with the settings and character but the story and plot twist felt so weird, not mention some aesthetics look very good but don´t fit in this game, for instance the character of Joseph Gibson a.k.a. Super Joe; what the hell they did with him? The remake of the NES game got everything right and the designs by Shinkiro nailed it: the new design of the characters look goofy but at the same time so awesome and badass, keeping the spirit of the original game. However in the sequels the designs changed drastically that they looked from a different game and Joe looks more a Revolver Ocelot clone than the character of the remake and I haven´t talk about Rad Spencer. Also why the need to go deeper with the lore? The original NES game never had such a lore or world background, it was just fights a bunch of nazis and that´s all. BC 2009 was a serious miss to revive the IP and that´s very sad.

They did Justice to Resident Evil and even Devil May Cry... they literally forgot about this one big time.

BCR1 is a pretty faithful modernization and still a decent modern day 2D game. Give it a try.

I miss the franchise! I loved the 3D game so much I played it more than most games. I want a new 3D game for the new console generation! Please don't give Spencer that stupid look and reboot the story though. I don't want a dead wife bionic arm.

You missed the worst and most criticized part of the reboot/sequel/thing: The story. Seriously, we as gamers can forgive a lot of minor issues if the story is rock solid....
