- While MediEvil’s fanbase continues to stand up for the game and its world and proclaim it’s genius, it still seems to struggle to get the type of foothold into mainstream gaming that games tend to require to be a big-time franchise with regular sequels and spin-offs. But why is that? Why would such an interesting, creative world like the one Cambridge brought to life all those years ago still find itself in the relatively same level of obscurity it has always been in? What the hell happened to MediEvil?

Glad the medievil remake came out. Bought the remake DAY ONE and if they make medievil 2 remake, I will do the same. Hopefully Medievil 3 will come.

I REALLY hope we get more Dan in the future. When I heard that MediEvil was being remade, I FLIPPED OUT! MediEvil was one of my FAVORITE PS1 games as a kid! I'm hoping we get a MediEvil 2 remake or anything MediEvil really.

I think Sony did poorly marketing the game here in the States, I did not know this game came out till about a week or two ago when a friend of mine mentioned it.

This game was on a demo disc, that Pizza Hut gave out in the 90's. Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot 3 was on there too.
@@dodovomitory3496 Definitely not into Death Stranding which isn't so much a game per se, it's more of an interactive piece of "art"... And I use the term art loosely because anything can be "art". I prefer the art of actual video games, and not some pet project of an overhyped experimental developer who never quite knows exactly what game he actually wants to create... Too bad Death Stranding wasn't Silent Hill, the theories of what the game could have been originally was a lot more interesting than what we got 😂

I never got to play the second (or the first really as I only had the demo disc of 1) so if we got #2 I’d be happy

Sure, the fantasy stuff in #1 was pretty dang charming, but I think the video forgot just how fresh the steampunk & undead London thing was for its time. Was pretty unique a setting back then in the PS1 days.

Stupid ppl buy stupid games i.e Madden each year with no changes. NBA 2k with crappy Micro-transactions in a full price game, etc etc call of Modern Battlefield Duty the list goes on an on. Niche games are that for a reason the masses never "get it" or try out new genre's. Just my thoughts.......

Good news. If you beat the remake 100% (all chalices and lost souls) you unlock the original game. I was the same way. Only had the demo but thanks to the remake and beating it 100% i got to finally play the original

I found that many reviewers were frustrated with no mid level checkpoints. Granted, I had issues with 3 levels in particular, you have to learn the lay of the land and where enemy placement is. I appreciate the challenge, bring on Medievil 2!

I agree that Sony should've called this a remaster rather than a remake. If they do I think this game will have better appreciation and sales. Though I have to admit, the revamped camera in this game really changes things for the better, much better to a point of convincing me that this is a remake lol.
I love this game so much as a kid, played it many times. Even after the sequel came out in 2000, I still prefer to play the original many times over. I really enjoyed the remake, but if you grew up during the 7th console generation (PS 3/360/Wii) and later, I can understand why this game can feel archaic.
While there are far more varieties of games nowadays than before, most game genres that manage to sell to the mainstream market since 2006 are generally the same, and Medievil happens to fit that mainstream mold, just... mechanically outdated.
It may technically qualify as a remake, but it's too close to the line IMO.
The thins that pisses me off is that Sony doesn't realize it's their fault this game didn't do as good as it could have. Their whole approach with this franchise is extremely poor.
C'mon stop complaining about the future of MediEvil when the remake just came out last year. Feel lucky that it was even remade.

I wasn't complaining. Just pointing out it's mediocre reception among reviewers and low sales is not a reflection on my actual opinions. I personally love the game, but that has nothing to do with how much of a commercial success it was.
what is your basis for Resurrection selling poorly? It did get a Platinum version as well.
I would love to see an openworld RPG taking place in Gallowmere. either alongside the game or during the time of the war with Zerok. Perhaps even a combination of the two could be good fun
Medievil is awesome but I think the games just don’t sell that well. Even the new remake I don’t think sold that good, I rarely hear people talking about it.

I got this with the extra stuff. I grew up with the first two MediEvil games. Of course, I wanted to play this for nostalgia. Honestly, I do enjoy the PS4 version a lot.

A certain degree, yes. But it went two decades with nothing. The point of the video is to expand on why.
I disagree with the people that say this game needs to play like a modern game. What exactly do they mean by modern? Check points in levels that don't need any, and you have life bottles which are essentially lives? Or what a more cinematic mess to pretend its like Metal Gear? Auto Aim? Lock On? Or maybe you want "MICROTRANSACTIONS"?
I don't think people today understand what games are anymore. The negativity towards Medievil is undeserved.

Medievil 1 is my favourite adventure game ever. Best decision mum ever made was getting me this instead of crash bandicoot. I can die happy if and only if they release a Medievil 3

You can't blame the PS2 "fanfare" of the late 90s and early 2000s... because the highlight of PS2 was hardware BC and as such it was the lack of repeat mentions of the game that get overshadowed by a lot of noise from multiple games also coming out then.

Medievil was one of the best games on the Playstation. Yes, the gameplay could be tedious at times, but that was part of its charm. Medievil 2 might not have been as good as the first game, but it was still a worthy sequel. I will defend the PS4 remake to the death because it's easily the best remake of a PS1 game to date. Now, if we could only get a remake of Medievil 2, or better yet, a long overdue Medievil 3, that would be smashing

It might not benefit much from being multiplat. If it barely sold on PS4, which is the best selling console, what’s the point on putting it on consoles which way less people own? All that work making a new version just for a handful of sales.

nothing happened. the Remake played exactly like the original. the problem is that it didn't play great in the beginning. they should have tightened up the combat. if they make another, hopefully they will.
This game made my childhood in Australia absolutely loved it and went down there to the shop with my son and got the remake passing on a great game
I fucking love Medievil. The sequel is good too, though I always preferred the original. The music in both games is absolutely gorgeous, and I really hope we finally get a continuation at some point.
yeah I agree. The original is just the best form of it IMO. It's definitely time for a third game though. Remakes are cool but I'm ready for something new.
PlayStation fans needs to get out this mindset if a game is not exclusive to PlayStation it's not good makes no sense because a game will benefit if it's on other systems

This was my FAVORITE game as a kid. As soon as I found out that MediEvil was being remade, I preordered without ANY hesitation. I absolutely ADORE MediEvil ❤ and want MORE MORE MORE!
Oh, another favorite game of mine that I would LOVE to see come back remastered is Heart Of Darkness. I would just.. die lol!

Honestly if they wanted to make a new Medievil, or a 3rd one, I think the perfect framework to go for is breath of the wild. Big open world, in Gallowmere's style, combat that's fun and challenging but jot overly complicated, focus on exploration, some good boss fights. That sounds like a dream come true to me 👍
Bastardizing Medievil that way would ruin it by losing the short fun level design not to mention be filled with pointless objectives just to justify the open world style in an oversaturated market
Mirror's Edge was a great fun short experience thanks to its tight fun level design while Catalyst ruined that by going open world
@@bamban_garcia5562 yeah evolving a game series isn't bastardizing it. If done correctly, the whole point is to improve on what came before it. Or were you unaware that this game didn't do to hot? Yes the old 2 were great, but that doesn't mean there's not room for improvement. If the open world is designed well, and in a way that compliments medievil specific level design, it would function exactly the same way. Only instead of an over world and loading screens connecting levels, it's a little extra of the in game universe to explore.
Did I say over stuff it with pointless shit? Did I say to make the game world so huge it feels empty? Did I say to it would be better than the originals? No. If you perceived it that way I'd say, that's a you issue. I merely stated a route that *could* work if done correctly to revitalize a series that suffers, in the modern age, with game design from 25 years ago.

Open level areas or semi open levels that expand the location while still retaining the original style design those I can get behind with but not another open world title in an already oversaturated market

Again, if done correctly. Only look at something like the res4 remake. Kept in line with the original vision and improved in a number of ways. Does it ruin the original? No because it's building off of what the original did. But you probably think that's a bastsrdization too. Seeing as you love your little buzz words. An "already oversaturated market 🤓" doesn't mean that games of that style can't still be made successfly. It just means there's more of them. That means more shit too. Doesn't effect the ones that are made well 🤷♂️ And honestly it just sounds like you lack and any sort of creative vision if you can't imagine a game universe as great as medievil working in another game style.

Yeah this was my favorite game growing up and the first one I would speed run obsessively. I only have two friends who knew of the game without me telling them about it. I'm okay with Medievil not being as popular though. Didn't really like the sequel's story (gameplay was solid though) and I just wanted to kill the genie in Resurrection.

Well, the remake looks good. But unfortunately, it messed up the timings in fights and jumps. Also, the soundtrack isn't as good as the original and the voice actors are neither. They fail to capture the original atmosphere. And worse off all, the game now handholds the player, when you had to figure everything out for yourself in the original. And the game isn't as "readable" as the original. Meaning, that it doesn't give you enough feedback for player actions.
Conclusion: Europe = based.
In all seriousness though, it’s actually surprising the gothic medieval aesthetic doesn’t sell better in other regions, considering how popular dark souls and fire emblem are in both America and Japan. Even nightmare before christmas, which Medievil obviously drew inspiration from as well, is vastly more well known and loved in the US

Of all the games ever played Medieval will always be the only one I'd choose in a one or none scenario. Bring on remake M2 and M3 especially if it's the ''arrow of fate'' concept they had decades ago!

It's not for everyone, it's definitely a different type of hack and slash game, I love it personally, it's my favorite video game.

i never beat the original but i loved it as a kid. i'd love to see other games be remade like Jersey Devil and Gex (with Dana Gould doing the voice again!!!)
How well did the remake sell?
It sold well in Europe for a few weeks but outside of that not particularly well. It still turned a profit though since it was cheap to make. So who knows where that leave it as a franchise.
Classic games, medieval 3 is a must, Sony have to do this surely, also if you can do such a good job with the Doom and Wolfenstein revivals, why not Duke Nukem

Played it as a kid, was very excited about the remake, bought it, sucked at it. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but I die 🤷♂️ dunno how players get through it with no checkpoints. Would still buy a sequel.

eh, maybe. I personally enjoyed how goofy and easy it is. I think arcadey is the way to go for medievil.

I love the secrets of the game. Some secrets are inaccessible without cheats. I loved the 2 games.
I think Sony just has to listen to its fans better, for real. Dan has always held a huge place in my heart as my very first video game and my most favorite spot ever sense I was like, 4. I know that might not be long, but I do believe That a third that can follow the lines of instead of time travel or simply fighting a wizard, and not trying to “fit in” with the games nowadays like Fortnite or PUBG, but possibly bring on an even scarier theme where Daniel can go all DOOM style and bring him to hell or some shit, because back when and where this took place, Catholicism was very popular and most Catholics aren’t in depth with the whole thing Catholicism represents, and all you need to do to get into heaven is believe in God, repent, pray, and do all of that and you’re good, so he probably faced the same fate Joan of Arc would and has probably been sent to Heaven. By bringing him down to hell he can probably have a more “Angelic” take to him and give us a better idea on what he looked like when he was alive. We did get to see the stained glass and shit, but 1 That’s stained glass and 2 he was blond even though it clearly stated “hair black as raven’s wings” or some shit, OR maybe we can get a bit of a backstory of who he really was. I mean also there was some Wiki entry I read about it, but hey that’s Wikipedia and I personally don’t believe in Resurrection to be canonically real, so maybe they can SCRAP whatever the fuck they had attempted to use and make him a little more badass like the way most people see him to be (even through the goofy look). OR WE CAN GET A BACKSTORY ON WHAT THE FUCK THAT WHITE FAIRY THING IS. I WANNA SEE SOME FAIRY MAGIC LMFAOOOO
Either way I still am very happy about Medievil and how it was “remastered” last year, I got it for Christmas and it really helped me reconnect to one of the very best games of all time. I have not intended for this comment to stomp on Sony in any way, or what they plan on doing with this masterpiece but I really REALLY believe that they are wasting some serious potential.

German Expressionism? C'mon... German expressionism? That's a stretch. In what way does this game specifically evoke German expressionism? I mean, how can one really do that, today? Expressionism is marked primarily in its contrast to previous artistic movements, but I feel like this is just saying "oh well, it's dark, and German expressionism was dark, so... Chiaroscuro?" Even just saying 'expressionism' would be a stretch - while at the time, artists trying to portray dark, painful, or unpleasant themes while actively rejecting beauty and aesthetic stood out from the art that came before, from a modern perspective that's far from novel, so it's far too little too attempt to draw such a specific comparison.
