You should watch..indiana diesel channel from yesterday..theys welding a gas tank from a old chevy pickup..they thought they had all the fumes out,but whooosh not ALL the fumes...i jumped first then laughed
I worked as a welder some years ago.I now weld as part of my hobby. I've never set anything on my bench on fire. However, I set my sleeve and socks on fire a few times. I also burnt through a few running shoes..
Looks handy! I stand by hating painting! It's on the list next to mudding drywall and pouring concrete! You might have to flip the short pieces of angle over so the shelf can't bounce off the ledge.
The 17 dislikes came from salespeople from "Delta", the maker of the JOBSITE Tool Box. You see, they sell trays to fit this box, and if everyone makes one for them self, they don't get to sell you one. Keep fabricating and fixin. We enjoy watching...even your mistakes.
More likely came form the ones watching that couldn't understand why he didn't measure from tray rest lip (inside edge) diagonally to the lip above it on the opposite site. That would have allowed the tray to be longer and fit better so it would slide forward and back better. Or the fact he tryied to put it in diagonally and force it square. Corner to corner is longer than straight across.
Each time you do something on your bench, I quickly look to see what strange thing may be on the bench and try to guess what it may be. always some surprises.
You looking good on camera is one thing. Another is that people get to see that everybody has "OOPS" moments and it's important to do 'field revisions' sometimes. Thanks for the honesty.
And that's why I don't throw stuff away. Could be used to repair, fix, or build something in the future. That tray probably is better built than a store bought one. 👍👍
I just recently got an undermount toolbox put on my E350 Flatbed. I've been mentally engineering a tray and rails to mount it on, so I can have a place to put the tow strap and ratchet straps, up out of the chains and binders.
Nice small fabrication video. It's rewarding to make something useful out of scrap pieces. 👍😁 I never understood why those job boxes can be so expensive!
I have several metal frames from Tractor Supply that the mowers are shipped in. They just throw them away. Thin metal box tubing good for lighter projects
Great vid, so real life with run-out on spraypaint and things that didn't fit the first time... Had some good laughter on your comments... :-D Thx for the vid!
Spray can tip: heat the paint before you spray. Summer time I just put the can in the sun. Winter put them on a heat register. Warm paint flows better.
"Close the lid on this project" .... oof! But I take pride at spotting the corner trim just before you mentioned it. Looks like you had fun with a light task to make other tasks easier!
A other good source of metal is the angle and tubing that is used to reinforce New Holland, Kubota, and LS tractors that are being shipped to the US. At least here in Eastern North Carolina I can get it cheap. It's not inch measurements but it will work. Metal scrapyards are good for getting metal cheap.
That was a great idea, an make a good more use able space in a big box that really needed an tray too. An putting paint on just breings the tray better. An like you I like painting too. Fact love the smell of paint.. Great job!!!!!
Very nice work. Wish I was that talented to fabricate stuff like that. I’m about to purchase a job box and was wanting a shelf which lead me to your vid. Thanks
That was a great instructional video Matt. I like to watch you build things. I don't want to put any pressure on you but speaking of building things, I'm getting anxious to see an update on that 106 bag concrete wall you and those good helpers poured there at the old abandoned church. Kind of curious about the big block too! I am being extremely patient about the 57 Autocar because I (having built a few old cars and trucks myself) know that takes quiet a lot of your spare time. As you can see, I follow your channel pretty close and it is a great source of entertainment for an old man that can't get out and do the kind of things you do anymore. I appreciate all the great footage you send our way so keep it up.😎🇺🇸ps I noticed you use the Maxwell House storage system in your shop. I used that same system.
That was slick and it works fine I made Joe's a bit wider it was a foot wide but it was a fine fit with only a half inch of slack on the ends yours turned out cool Joe's was for a lot of stone cutting and stone masonary
You may want to wear some leather gloves when using a cut off wheel because they will explode and acetone on the bare hands may not be a good idea.. Cluttered workbench? At least you do not have to work on the floor like Brian and Scott.
Just a thought you could make a hinged pivot lift up tray like those fishing tackle box trays by adding four lift braces and a low profile handle in the middle and flip the angle irons on the end over.
If you run out of room on that bench, hang your coffee pot from the ceiling. 👍 Paint the hanger almond, if you have to! Nice fit for the shelf. Are you going to add a handle to it?
Excellent work and thanks for the awesome content and if you really wanted to you could toss the tools out and use it as a portable bqq stay safe and take care
Quite the episode Matt, sparks flying, welding, fabricating, an almost fail AND we got to watch paint dry!😦😨😠😥😂 Ahhh, I like when a plan comes together. I look forward to your next episode and you and yours stay healthy and safe. Cheers from this old retired coot living in Tennessee along for the journey.💖👍😷👀🍻✌
The swing arms off those bed frame are my front end alignment measuring sticks I tie them to the wheels then measure each side up even then measure the toe side to side
When you finish painting turn the can upside down and spray until it quits then they’ll work next time you need it. 90% of the cans will stop spraying upside down cleaning it out
I store my spray can nozzles covered with paint thinner in a reused jelly jar with the original top, need a nozzle pull one out and do the spraying, turn the can upside down and clear the top of the can, drop the nozzle back in the jar.
You’re not using Master locks on that box are you? They’re garbage - as are most consumer locks, unfortunately. Check out the Lockpicking Lawyer’s channel.
Matthew Taylor 👍 that guys a wizard at picking locks, my builder mates are using gps trackers hidden in site tool boxes now and hidden trail cams with good results
I need you and Andrew Camarata to collaborate or something. You two are my favorite on TH-cam. Bed rail on the road, I think I'll make that part of my toolbox. Great channel sir
@@DieselCreek yeah I'm not surprised, he seems like a loner out in his sanctuary. Again great videos. Looking forward to watching that church come together
Nice build, but please use a blade guard for your angle grinder, those discs can sometimes explode and you wouldn't want those fragments stuck in your arm.
Hey matt you might want to put caster rollers or some 2" stock to make it t fit your bobcat forks or to lift and mov also a few loops to tie the box on your truck
I don't know about you but what we do on our job sites we do the same thing building that shelf but then we cut a hole in the side of the Box and install a power strip and have all of our batteries on the tray charging so you're never on a dead battery
I love the videos, especially where you explain what's going on and the thought process. I have been thinking about adding a sliding drawer, but sliding the other way that would require adding angle iron along the front and back and utilizing 2 pair of the 99 cent Harbor Freight roller-ball bearings to allow the drawer to glide freely. Those can be easily added to yours if you'd think it an advantage.
Apart from the fact you have to modify the box, I think it would be a better way to have them run. A 6-8" wide tray running across the short axis would take up less of the overall opening, allowing you to get bigger stuff in and out if you need to. You could make several of them to get the same overall storage capacity as the shelf Matt made in this video. And if you need to take them out for any reason, they're lighter and easier to handle than a single large tray. If you wanted you could even make one with handle(s) and use it to carry (some of) your tools around on site. Grab and go basic tool tray.
Yet another awesome build, it gets boring reading comments from self acclaimed TH-cam experts with regards to health and safety. You tend to find that those who leave those comments are in their early 20s who are obsessed with being safe. It's his workshop his working environment and his fully aware of the risks. Don't be that boring TH-cam expert and ruin the fun
Nice little project. I should make videos like that again as well. Think of a little project? Just do it and get it out there! What I learned over the course of the years, it's great to not exclusively work on big projects, with several episodes. Because people always keep asking about updates and the projects just never end :D
Form, fit, function!
Well done, Matt!

Yes I only thought of flipping them after I put it in the box 🤦🏼♂️oh well good for now
Bed frames are grrrrrr8 for building all kinds of things. Make sure you have some in stock.
Painting is the reward for the prior work.
It's nice to have a simple enjoyable project from time to time
I grab bed frames to love em' for light stuff
Nice little quick improvement.

Good work. You have a product there that is an excellent upgrade. Looks factory.
Thank you!
Great job on it. I like to watch Wes too. He's an incredible mechanic. Shelf looks good man👍
only difference in them is: wes hates stuff made in china, and diesel creek cant live without it !!
Steve Whyte oh I hate it, but I accept that far too many things are made there to think you can get away from it
Nice work...i agree with Wes, painting is for the birds. Great channel. Cheers
I pick up old bed frames too! Dude your sliding shelf is the bomb! Nice job!
Great video... Subconsciously you knew that fitting the end pieces that way would save a whole lot of cutting and re-welding...Great job!!!👍👍👍👍
im pretty sure your workbench is fine. Nobody had any fun without lighting a couple unintentional fires
I just don’t wanna burn the place down lol

I thought I was the only one reclaiming old bed frames. Good job.
I’ve seen a lot of them on the scrapper channels that’s for sure
Old exercise equipment also lots of square tubing.
I used one when i finished my shop for a sliding door. I had a hell of a time drilling it though.

I do that all the time. I put all my paint in a box and set it near a radiator all winter in my house. It's ready to go when I need it.
save old tips and clean them in acetone and replace clogged tips, repeat.
what you talking about that work bench is clean AF
people give you hard time for your work bench LOL really should see mine some times when i gotta get stuff done and dont have time to clean

Well Matt, u just saved another bed frame from going to the dump. I’m keeping the one sitting in my garage after watching this video
Good stuff! Thanks Matt.
Shop tip preheat before welding gets the molecules happy so they play nice with others ! Less cracking .
I keep a fire extinguisher at each exit. That way, if there is a fire, I can go to the exit and decide whether to fight it or flee.
