- This is a free flowing discussion of my relationship adapting to solitude while living off grid. The rainy season has begun and I've been spending a substantial amount of time inside. It's the first video I've done in english for a while. It is a much slower paced video than I usually do, but I think it parallels well with the tranquility of the rainy season. Sé que este es mi primer video en inglés en mucho tiempo. Quería hacer un video para mis amigos de habla inglesa. Tendré más videos en español próximamente. I love your willingness to open up and be vulnerable. I can't speak for others, but I'd certainly be interested in seeing more honest and introspective videos like this one.
I've spent a fair amount of time in solitude too, and your experience echoes mine in many ways. Something I've struggled with at times is adjusting back to socialising again after a long period of being alone. I have found that the calm and introspective way of being that develops in solitude is the antithesis of the fast paced and superficial modern world. The longer I spend in solitude, the less connected I feel to that modern way of life. So, when I inevitably need to engage with society again, I feel at odds with it and this can create some anxiety and unease within me. However, I feel like this is something I need to work on within myself. I want to develop the ability to be equanimous in any situation. On the other side of the coin though, I am a much more peaceful and present person now. I'm way less reactive and I have way more control over my emotions. I attribute this to meditation too, but solitude and meditation kind of go hand in hand I think.
Also, on the topic of subtitles. There is some software that can automatically translate and align the subtitles for you. I can't remember which one I used before, but it was actually really impressive. It still takes a bit of massaging to get them perfect, but it gets you 95% of the way there right from the start. It might be worth looking into if you haven't already done so. I'll try to find the one I used before and write it another comment here if I can.
I really appreciate your input. Luckily I do get a decent blend of socializing when I choose to engage. It is very rare I go more than a few days without any human interaction. But I don't receive the shock from transitioning to face paced modern life. That isn't a reality for any of the locals that live here. Everything is much slower paced. Farming, collecting fire wood, taking care of livestock, managing a small tienda.. etc. It's a beautiful life. Luckily it is looking like I won't have to return to the hustle and bustle anytime soon.. If ever if I can swing it.
I'm also beginning to work closely with a friend doing some intensive self work and reflection. It entails a lot of reading, writing and self examination. This is the perfect situation to make some hopefully lasting improvements. Sitting alone in a cabin alone by itself doesn't produce a whole lot without some guidance. Trust me I know :)
I'll look into the subtitles some more. Thank you again for your support and input. I knew that the vast majority of my subs only speak Spanish, but it feels better speaking on deeper things in my native tongue. That video would have been completely different and probably misinterpreted/misspoken had I tried in Spanish.

I live in Oaxaca de Juarez. You and I are kindred souls. I am now retired and also cherish my solitude even in this busy, lively city. I came from the medical industry and spent my days surrounded by a crush of humanity so now I can truely appreciate my current life. I really love the Sierra Nortes and will probably move there some day. I suggest that you acquire a cat. They are the perfect creatures to share solitude with. I have a big orange one named Bernie.
I love that! It sounds purrrrfect haha I actually have a friend nearby whose cat just had 4 kittens. Black with long hair. I want one! Do you think it would be happy inside a small cabin during the rain?

I live in the mountains in Michoacán, found a puppy someone threw away in their garbage can, and then finally got a cat a year later. It's way harder to acclimate these two now that they're older. Get er done now when you've got the opportunity. Cats scare off the rats and mice too.

I love this type of life and would give the world to be where you are and not here in this invisible jail where no one seems to be happy.
I am glad you treasure tranquility down there. Trust me tons of millions of people are jealous. We all want to actually live and your spot is a perfect place to truly live man.
Keep up with the positive mindset and hope every time more and more humans switch to that type of living. There’s nothing fun about living the type of living we get in the city. Our system sucks and it isn’t easy to go against the flow but honestly joining the crowd would make me all empty, superficial and senseless.
I would rather choose the way you live life than following the crowd. Just remember, no one dies a virgin, life fucks us all so we better start living before dying like we hadn’t ever lived.

@@Gringooax You’re welcome 🤗, aww you’re so sweet🥰. For asmr there’s no such thing as being too long, there’s some TH-cam rain videos that are hours and hours long but you don’t need to make yours that long you can start with a 20 or 30 minute to test it out and see how ppl like it. Yes just film the rain in the forest. I love watching and listening to the rain and thunder and the smell of rain aaahh even better. We don’t get much rain here in the Nevada desert 🏜️.

@Gringooax hahaha, I was born in a rural area in Guatemala, I still have memories about the rain, the sound even the lightning. My mom's house had galvanized roof. that was amazing back in the 80s. I watch all your videos.

Hey Collin, loved this English video. Doing both languages will def be good for your channel, and yes I agree, describing these intimate self-feelings might not be accurate enough in Spanish.
From your comments it seems that many Mexicans are trying to pump you up because they're saying things like, keep your spirits up, don't be bored etc.
My interpretation of your emotions in this video was exactly the opposite. You seemed totally at peace with where you are and what you're doing. You seem so content to continue appreciating your lifestyle, and at such a young age, being able to totally see the "Slavedom" that most people spend their entire lives.
Having worked super hard in Canada for 40 years in a really stressful profession, after 13 years post secondary, one might think it's easy for me to see just how great my early retirement life is... But still, I can get suckered into romaniticizing my previous lifestyle and comparing it to my off grid Mexican Highlands life.
You're doing so amazing and it certainly shows.
Only one piece of advice.
Do some research into veggie oils... They're really do similar to plastic and they make us sick slowly.
Use the manteca from the carnicerias or Coconut oil if you can find it. Manteca is so much cheaper though.
Although you still need to venture away from the super carb heavy tortillas
Just trying to help in the long term.

I've been reading, writing, cooking, cleaning, video editing etc. I like the idea of wood carving! When I was a kid I knew a guy who could carve a chain out of a piece of wood. I thought he was the coolest adult haha
