TY! I did a little more research and a lot of people have this problem with the TH-cam app. But I did find if I turned off arc and messed with a few other settings then open the Netflix app, then went back to the TH-cam app. It kick sand. So weird.
probably the same problem with streaming apps on pc/phone, but reversed. youtube is meant to be played on pc/phone devices, as streaming apps(netflix, max(there isnt even a max app on phone or pc), apple tv+)are meant to be played on apple tv 4k or other similar streaming boxes. only way to get dolby vision+atmos and higher bitrate. use youtube on pc/phone/laptop.
I bought a Denon 517 soundbar because I have an apple TV 4K and Apple TV plus has lots of Atmos content. I needed a soundbar with two HDMI connections. The ARC connection goes to the TV ARC HDMI and the other HDMI goes direct to the Apple TV. The subwoofer is pre-connected so it just works when powered on. I waited for an Amazon price drop which I was expecting near Black Friday.
Love this! What would you recommend the setup be if I'm running an AppleTV / Soundbar / Philip Syncbox? I'm worried my current setup may hinder the video/audio somehow.
This is really useful however i hate screen blanks and i switch between youtube and use OTT which are HDR/DV, so i left the settings intact DV@60 On Both match rate and frame off because hisense e7k does this automatically… I can see the non hdr video performs well in this format ❤
Thank you. I had already adjusted ' match content' and put the output on ' 4k hdr Dolby Vision'. Though the series and movies looked great the menu looked awful. This was bothering me. So I did some resets and tried to adjust my tv settings which of course was the wrong approach. Now I know what to do LEAVE THE BOX TO SDR AND SWITCH MATCH CONTENT TO ON. Now my menu looks great again.
Also if your passing through make sure your receiver or sound bar has 2.1 input and output availability myne does but I was using 2.0 as Best Buy guy told me it didn’t matter I kept switching back and forth from atv and iOS on my g3 and noticed a very big difference in picture once I just directly hooked the atv into an open 2.1 port with a 2.0 cord
When I set my Apple TV 4K to SDR my Sony OLED doesn’t show it’s outputing Dolby Vision. When I set the Apple TV to Dolby Vision the Sony plays Dolby. Vision
The normal UI doesn't gain anything in HDR (except nicer looking screen savers). In the living room, I'm most often just running TH-cam TV in the background or TH-cam itself, none of which is HDR. No reason to drive the TV in HDR until it is needed with a movie or TV show and then it can just match format.
I was wondering the same thing but I like the screen savers so much that I want them to be the best quality they can be plus I have match content on so it doesn’t matter. I’ve seen a few content creators have SDR but if match content is switched on then I see no reason to have SDR as standard. Also, is that the reason for TH-cam to black out for two seconds when a ad drops in a video?
You can run the UI in an HDR mode, yes. You get nicer looking screen savers. I do run my ATV in HDR in the theater for generally faster syncs when playing HDR content, but I run in SDR in the living room because I more often tend to watch TH-cam TV and TH-cam there.
I have a problem with my Apple TV and Samsung soundbar . When ii turn off the sound bar the connection gets unconnected. The default says tv speakers and can not change
Hi thanks for this. I tried connecting my apple tv to my soundbar. The sound bar is connected to my Tv. But when I do this there’s no source am that shows me the Apple TV screen. What should I do. ? It’s a JBL 5.1 soundbar. When I connect the Apple TV directly to the TV I dont get the Dolby atoms setting in audio format in the settings for Apple TV.
The JBL at 5.1 maybe not indicate that it can accept an Atmos signal, hence they reason you're not getting. You might just be stuck needing to route through the TV to the soundbar then.
TH-cam videos are likely in all kinds of different resolutions and frame rates, so most likely yes. Try to turn off match rate and see if it changes. Very little TH-cam is in HDR.
I have a Samsung neo qled. [qn85d 85’’]. I find the picture quality best when I put it in 4K HDR10+ with match content and frame rate on. and chroma in 4:2:2. I find it the best on my tv cause Samsung doesn’t support Dolby vision yet, I have to put it in 4K HDR10+. I guess the settings differ from TV to TV. For ex:- UHD TVs are best when set to 4K SDR. All in all really pleased with my Apple TV 4K purchase. It’s a beast!!
@@Techthusiasm from what I understand, it is still present on the latest gen versions. Keep in mind, it is very subtle, so it may not be all that noticeable to most.
Great video! I just purchased an Apple TV 4K 3 generation, watching your video I could not find Dolby Atmos that was weird there no options. Don’t know what to do. Also, I couldn’t calibrated either using my phone. Any tips regarding this issue. Thank you.
New Apple TV user. Just plugged it into an old non smart tv. Only shows center portion of screen. I selected several options but only shows center part of screen. Do I need a new tv? Or am I missing something. It is an hd capable tv. But old.
I have a Yamaha RX-A1080 receiver ( only have 4 speakers and channel speaker) with a LG C2 OLED tv. Trying to figure out if picture quality and any other things would make it worth buying the Apple 4K newest generation.
Dolby atmos audio Works great for movies but for apple music it doesn't hit my subwoofer. I'm trying to see if there is something I can do on the receiver end to make it work.
Awesome video and hoping you can assist. Maybe just my imagination but just upgraded to this from a Roku 4K streaming stick and it seems the audio on the Apple device is subpar compared to the Roku. I have this on a Samsung QN90B and only use the tv speakers. Is there a setting I am missing?
Hmm, shouldn't be much to it, per the setting in the video. I'm not sure if the Samsung will indicate to the ATV to send the Atmos streams though like my LG does, even though you're only using the TV.
For long distances, I use RUIPRO off Amazon amzn.to/3PaRDkG. For short runs, I use Infinite cables us.infinitecables.com/search?type=product&options%5Bprefix%5D=last&options%5Bunavailable_products%5D=show&q=hdmi+2.1.
Hi. The video was very informative. Currently I have connected my Denon x580bt amp which has a 5.1 setup to my Apple Tv. In the audio section unless until unless I don’t change the ‘Change Format’ toggle to ON the 5.1 Dolby Digital tab doesn’t show below. So when I Turn On the ‘Change Format’ below I get new toggle tab which says NEW FORMAT - Dolby Digital 5.1. Please guide if I am right here. Thanks in advance
I want to have the audio in Stereo when I watch YV like You Tube but I want atmos when I watch movies. How do I set it to switch it. I guess I could have two Apple TVs.
I believe you can turn off Atmos specifically for music in the Apple Music app setting itself, but the general Atmos setting for other apps is universal.
I installed my apple 4k tv latest version into my receiver that isn’t atmos capable. It wouldn’t play back in 7.1 only 5.1. Is there something that I need to do in settings?
Ah-ha!!!! My Apple TV screen savers DID NOT work when format set to 4K SDR (it only showed the LA cityscape over and over) but ALL THEMES DO SHOW when set to 4K Dolby Vision and match range & frame rate.
Do you have a recommendation of whether WiFi or Ethernet connection is better. I have 1 Gig internet and google mesh. Would there be a benefit to relocating my internet router and connecting via Ethernet. I usually watch sports and movies in 4k.
You're probably find nowadays with our current Wi-Fi speeds and such, but I always try to wire my devices as much as possible unless I can't for some reason.
I have my picture settings always on Standard Mode (unless Gaming on my consoles) then I use the Apple TV settings to switch between 1080p and 4K SDR because the local dimming on my LG Nanocell TV sucks. This helps create more black levels when watching movies and tv shows. Otherwise using Dolby Vision or HDR will show the bad halo effect and washed out color. Great video though 👍🏽
Great video as usual. Please one answer as you are expert at apple tv.I have an old sanyo 1080p projector no arc with apple tv 4k 2022 and non atmos avr with 7.1 set up.If i buy a new avr with atmos support and still REMAIN my set up 7.1 as i cant put speaker at atmos set up and put my apple tv 4k at audio"atmos"then i will have higher bitrate audio even with 7.1 set up?Is this possible. Please let me know in order to buy a new avr.thanks and keep on!
newbie question. Setup is as follows: Ive a Sony a80K with Apple TV connected to HDMI 2 and my soundbar connected the eARC port which is one of only two ports that support Dolby. HDMI 4 port can also be set to Dolby vision. However, my PS5 is connected to HDMI 4 because it is the only port that supports VRR. My question is, are there limitations to Dolby on the Apple TV setting if the HDMI can only be set to "enhanced" and not to Dolby? I hope that makes sense. Almost confused myself haha!
I would expect all those ports should support Dolby Vision, but only 2 of those ports may be HDMI 2.1 capable. You want that for the PS5. The ATV shouldn't matter which port it is on, I suspect.
I had the same problem, it is related to full/limited dynamic range hdmi setting in combination with a specific tv (Sony tvs mostly). I was at the verge of selling my ATV (Sony AF8 screen), but after flicking the full/limited setting back and forth, the dim picture got sorted! Apple still has to fix this problem….
Thanks so much for the video very informative. One question which may have already been asked. Being in Australia does it matter if I set the 4K SDR settings to 60 Hz rather than 50Hz?
Sir, Very useful tips yr video. I am in India. I am using Apple tv 4k with 8k 2.1 hdmi cable monoprice brand with Benq w2700i projector using Denon AVR 4700h receiver. But usable to get Dolbyvision.🎉
Do you mean when playing content? If it's wider than 16:9 material you will have black bars on top and bottom naturally, but the ATV itself shouldn't be cropping or every have any reason setting to crop, IIRC.
I enjoyed your video. I hope you can help with an eARC problem and the Apple TV 4K. Just bought an Apple TV 4K 3rd generation 128 GB, a LG 65OLEDC3AUA and a Sonos Arc sound bar. Everything works great except the Apple TV. If I only have the Apple TV, LG and Sonos attached all works well but as soon as I connect another device like cable tv or Roku I only get Dolby Atmos formatted sound from the set up. Dolby 5.1 and stereo have no sound. I can switch the eARC off on the tv but I don't get the great sound. My older 2nd generation Apple TV doesn't have the same problem. Only the 3rd gen. Any ideas? Thanks.
If you're connecting devices to a TV, then video levels are generally preferred. There was suggestion from some time ago that video levels on ATV had a slight green push (per the comment from AVS), so folks there had been using RGB. I believe that was some time ago on past hardware/OS releases.
@@Techthusiasm hello, yes I have all my video devices connected directly to my LG G2 including this Apple TV. So what is the correct setting RGB High or YCbCr?
I prefer using video levels, and I'll be tinkering with the iPhone calibration capability shortly. Try video levels and see if you notice any green push vs. using RGB. If not, all good.
You can’t even use RGB high without a 2.1 cord again Apple told me bad connection I keep reading all over the internet people saying as long as it’s ultra fast 2.0 does just fine at least for me could not be further from the truth guy at Best Buy told me it didn’t matter either and I had my tv hung and everything cables behind wall of course so I have to switch my Xbox series x 2.1 cord back and forth or have the tv guy come back and pay another 200 dollars
Just hoping for some advice. My setup, AWOL projector, Denon amp, Apple TV 4k using Infuse Pro to connect to my Nas Drive. Playing MKV movie files i always experience lip sync issues, and have to change settings in my amp to offset this. Just wondering if there is anything you can suggest. Switching off match framework etc, doesn't really make a difference.
So as of 8.1.23 i just hit reset setting, & it no longer turns black not even for a sec. My current settings are 4k hdr or SDR. Match content & frame OFF(bc im letting ATV4K do its job naturally). 4.2.0 NOT 4.4.4. No more black screen & still HDR.
If you turn off the match options, you won't see any black screens because the ATV will never change its output, so the TV never has to re-sync to an new signals. I wouldn't exactly call that letting the ATV do its job "naturally" as you're letting the ATV change the signals and containers in this case from what they naturally might have been.
The New TCL QM8 is a phenomenal mini QLed panel with pretty bad upscaling.. Fortunately ATV4k 3rd gen has made all the difference with our 1080p content we love so much. Dolby Vision & HDR10+ look AMAZING on the QM8. Thanks for the help understanding the settings. Total game changer for the QM8
Do you mean in the audio? No. You generally don't want to set audio in devices to Dolby because it means the device will be lossy re-encoding any original audio on the fly. Unless you really have to use it for compatibility with your audio setup, don't use that.
I have a first gen Apple TV 4K from 2017, a Rui pro 8k cable going from the Apple TV in to an hdmi 2.2 port of my Yamaha 681, and a fiber optic 18 gbps 4:4:4 hdmi cable out to my lg 77 cx oled. I can not get Dolby Vision to work. Am I missing something?
More vids like this covering more settings options pleas … question I have a Sonos playbar hooked up and there is real bad lip sync. All fresh cables including 2.1 HDMI cable. Any ideas ?
Hi, thanks for your guidance, you're doing a grest job. I have an apple tv connected to a Marantz Cinema 60 and the audio output is really low and sounds compressed throughout but especially in the vocal tange. The audio settings are as you recommend. Will the Audio Mode setting to 16bit matter? P.S - its the older apple tv not the 2022 model.
I wouldn't think the bit setting should matter, and you really shouldn't need to change it anyway. Hard to diagnose this issue. I'd look more at the Marantz settings.
@@Techthusiasm the marantz settings are standard Audyssey settings as well as those compared with manual settings. There aren't any advanced settings available, especially those that would compress the audio output in any manner. I've read elsewhere that setting the output to just Dolby Digital instead of Atmos helps. Does this make sense to you? Is there any way to simply pass through audio from the ATV as Is? Or Is it an inherent issue with the older Atv models?
I would not want to run my Apple TV in Dolby Digital mode. You're losing quality that way. I've never done anything special with my ATVs other than plug them in and configure as described here. I think something else is at play, but I don't know what. You could try a latest Apple TV model and see, but I wouldn't think that is the culprit.
Since installing the latest Apple TV for my Control4 system I've run into a problem. When initially turning on the system I get 3 or 4 instances where the screen goes blank but the audio is unaffected. FYI - My Apple TV is remote (connected via CAT6 cabling) with all the other Control4 hardware. Once that initially happens I'm good for the rest of my time viewing programming. What is causing this?
It's not really bitstream or PCM on ATV. You'll get either depending on the app and the content being played. If you have an Atmos system, just make sure Atmos is on and don't have it change any other audio formats.
Hi, my tv is is able to set between rgb full or limited , does it mean it run on rgb colour space? So do I need to match by setting my Apple TV to rgb full or limited?
For these settings, everything needs to match up between the source device and TV. If so, you're fine. If not, it'll usually look pretty clear that something is wrong. I recommend just using YCbCr for ATV to a television because you're sourcing content that is not native RGB to a display that generally prefers YCbCr. RGB is more a PC thing. High or low specifically has to do with the color range. You wouldn't want to use RGB full unless you are connecting to a computer monitor or you specifically know your display doesn't support that.
@@Techthusiasm thanks, it’s pretty confusing, my tv got 6 color space to choose from, there is auto, native, DCI- P3, BT. 2020, Adobe RGB and sRGB,BT.709. I have tried it, for ATV, no matter if I choose YCbCr, RGB full or RGB limited, my TV always matching it with sRGB,BT.709, I know because when I choose auto for my tv , only sRGB, BT.709 is same color with auto. So my conclusion is, my TV prefer sRGB,BT709 with RGB full range when matching with ATV. What’s your opinion?
I think you may need to adjust some other settings in the TV itself. Those values shouldn't be being forced unless the TV is quite old. BT.709 means you're not getting HDR. There's a lot more to these concepts.
@@Techthusiasm sorry forgot to tell you, the TV forcing BT. 709 only when playing non HDR and Dolby vision content, the tv will auto switch to HDR or Dolby vision mode similar to ATV match dynamic range and use different color space, I forgot what color space, I will check later and let you know.
@@Techthusiasm after I tried it, the color space switch to BT. 2020 and gamma to ST. 2084 in HDR mode, it didn’t show color space in Dolby vision mode, gamma is still ST. 2084 Which Dolby vision is more suitable? Bright or dark?
Hi, great video I had a question I was wondering why when I hook up my Apple 4k tv to the TV HDMI, my receiver plays and displays the Atmosdd on programs that have Atmos but when I hook up the Apple TV 4K straight to the receiver, I get PCM display is that supposed to be or is there a way to fix this and if so, when playing and showing PCM am I getting a true Atmos sound? thanks for your help.
What video settings would you recommend for connecting to a UWQHD gaming monitor 3440x1440? Only use ATV for running Zwift a cycling app. Monitor is Ilyama GB3467. Currently have on 4K SDR chroma444 with a good HDMI cable. Is RGB high a better colour option than Yb? Thanks
So what do you set the first video option to? You said not Dolby vision…on mine I have more than one 4k sdr option…4k 50, 4k 60…etc….which one off all the options does one pick? None? Am I missing something?
@@Techthusiasm Ok…thanks for letting me know. Have to adjust me picture settings next. Right now getting better picture quality running the apps Netflix, Prime, etc installed on my Sony SmartvTv….X930e. Will match the settings and see if it looks as good or better? Is there any reason it, the Apple TV, should look better?
Just came across your video myself. Switched from a Fire Stick TV 4k Max to the newest Apple TV 4k 128gb. Mainly because It's much snappier in terms of response. I have a Samsung Q60A 43" 4k TV myself, and have been playing around with the settings, I'd noticed the menu being overly bright, screensavers look great, but if those are on, I'm either asleep or out of the room, lol. So, if I'm understanding it, setting it to 4k SDR (60Hz) and changing the matching to On, just runs the menus in SDR and things of that nature and when using something that's output in either HD or HDR it bumps itself to match that content? Question is, does TH-cam, and all those support that without issues? I'd read that some apps had issues, but was curious for someone that has used it in that setting for a while if everything was changing as it should and going into the proper modes and output that it should?
It probably has the nominal video setting as HDR/DV on. If you set that to SDR with the matches on (per the video), the home screen will dim down a bit. I've not experienced trouble with the match setting, but I'm sure at certain points, certain apps have had bugs with it.
I have a Sony x95k with The latest Apple TV 4K connected to Sonos, arc with Atmos. After the last, Apple, update, Netflix, Max are not showing up as Atmos. Netflix is now showing up with only 5.1. I’m hoping with your superior brain, you can tell me what’s going on. Maybe I have to change the settingson my television input.
That's possible or else just try to route sources through the audio gear first if you have to and that supports your needed video formats. I think Brad (Home Theater Gamer) had a video on one of those extractors.
For Techthusiasm. In your opinion, would picture quality be better with the apple tv 4k 3rd generation on apps vs the smart platform on the LG OLED C2 on apps?
To me, there is a ton of virtue in using Apple TV over the built-in apps. I do feel ATV is the best quality streamer out there. How much better though is hard to say.
I have a QN95B 4K 120hz tv. I have mine Apple TV 4K 2022 set to match content and dynamic frame rate, and format 1080p SDR, Because i want the TV to upscale the content and not the Apple Tv. Most live tv i shown in 720p anyway in my country. RBG High.
You 100 percent want to use a 2.1 HDMI cord Apple advises so on their website as I originally used a normal 2.0 ultra high speed cable and there was a significant difference to the picture once I used the hdmi 2.1
Both. It connects to the ATV via RF/BT, but it can issue learned IR commands to other devices. I have an IR receiver/transmitter under my TV that sends volume control to my audio processor downstairs.
@@TechthusiasmI wondering how one can “marry” apple tv with TV and receiver. So I am about to purchase a TV set but I have all my sound connected to receiver. So how shell I go with the connections since Apple tv has only HDMI and no digital audio output any longer. If I connect hdmi to receiver first and then from receiver hmdi out to tv hmdi in might it cause the signal problem or lost of hdr/dolby vision capability since receiver might have “low hdmi out” ? I used to run a splitter that splits video signal to projector amd audio to reciver, but want to avoid all that with new TV.
Hi buddy! With Match Frame Rate on, I notice a slight lip sync issue on Netflix on my LG C2 (using built in speakers). Do you think the Apple TV Audio calibration feature will make a difference? Annoying as the LG built in Netflix app is fine.
just FYI i set-up a pair of home Pods scroll to apps under TV I noticed Atmos was enable but lossless audio was disable of course I enable are you aware of this?
Superb video, I also got it set up like this after watching many video's, but you made it all in to one awesome package! I did find that enabling Dolby Vision makes the screen savers even better, but then you get even more black screens haha!
I did find that with some ATV streaming content I get slight lip sync issues and that turning Match Frame Rate to OFF helps to fix the issue. Not sure why it works, but my Sony TV is pretty good with frame rate and motion handling on its own.
I had this issue, you need to run the audio calibration option for the most frequently used ranges & frequencies, a time consuming pita to do but will likely sort your problem out.

Can you help me please, I have an apple tv for a long time now I think its older generation 4k, I recently bough a Samsung q900a sound bar which is atmos capable. I recently bought a Xiaomi A2 series 58” that is Dolby Vision HDR10 and HLG enabled. Are these settings the optimal for my kind of TV? Thanks Also, it also has the eARC port under HDMI 2, therefore I assume that I should be plugging in my Belkin 48GBPS 4K HDMI into that respective port. Please correct me if I am mistaken. Thanks.
I have not used that specific set, but I think, yes, these settings would be on point same as with my TV. You do not need to plug the Apple TV into the eARC port. That port is for having the TV send sound back out to an external system, like a receiver or sound bar. Do you have an audio system or are you using the TV speakers?
@@Techthusiasm Sure thanks, for the optimal picture quality I was also researching online about the HDMI 2.1 port. My TV doesn’t state about anything like that. However, I did find that if eARC is available, then that is the very same port for the HDMI 2.1 and I wanted to plug in my Apple TV in there especially for the picture quality. Any comments on that? Or do I just plug into any HDMI 1,2, or 3 regardless of whether HDMI 2.1 or not, for the top picture quality. Thanks.
Video sources like the ATV may claim support for being HDMI 2.1, but they don't really do much with it. It's really more for gaming sources. So, you probably won't even notice any difference. That said, if you just have the ATV, no other sources, and you're not using eARC, then sure, keep the ATV on a 2.1 port. No reason not to and how knows what future firmware might bring.

Check out this video. th-cam.com/video/I_lLUFTbbxs/w-d-xo.html I would still try to have the Apple TV output Atmos if possible to get the higher bit rate streams. Your receiver would just output that as 5.1; however, I'm not sure if you specifically go Apple TV into the receiver if Atmos will be available to turn on since the receiver doesn't support the format. Do you see Atmos on the Apple TV settings menu for audio?
@Techthusiasm Good informative video, Thanks for sharing. I have a question. I have the new Apple TV 4K, Sony HT A9 Atmos receiver/speakers and Sony A95K OLED TV. I see a problem with Netflix on ATV 4K. If I connect my ATV 4K directly to the Sony OLED display, then, the eARC connection to Sony HT A9 receiver, I see Dolby Atmos as audio in Netflix titles [where available]. However, if I connect my ATV 4K to Sony HT A9 receiver using the HDMI in port on A9 receiver, then the HDMI out to Sony OLED, I see only Dolby 5.1 Audio on the same title in Netflix. This problem is only with Netflix streaming app while I see Atmos audio option in other streaming apps like Apple TV+ and other regional streaming apps in my country. What/Where do you think the problem is?
Netflix doesn't always show the right tags, I have found. But either of those connections should work for Atmos. Do you have a full Atmos speaker setup?
@@Techthusiasm Yes, A9 is Atmos capable receiver/speaker package. When I connect the ATV to A9, A9 says its Dolby 5.1 audio while I connect via OLED TV, A9 says Dolby Atmos. So, I guess, Its more than just displaying the wrong tag while connecting ATV to A9.
Hello and thanks for the Information. I am using the Apple TV 4K previous gen and the video format I am using is 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos. Did I listen well when you said the Video output should be 4K SDR? My chroma is 4.2.2. I wonder if my settings are not correct? Thanks for any comment. Kind Regards Gilbert
The default video output for the menus should be 4K SDR. Then with the matching options on, the box will automatically change output to HDR/DV when the content being played uses it.
@@Techthusiasm Hello and thanks for the response. I have changed the setting to 4K SDR. The matching was already on. Looking forward for other video’s! Have a great day
Well, not every show in Netflix is in Atmos. Plus if you are looking at TV series, some seasons may be Atmos and other seasons of the same show might not be.

I have an HTG-700 soundbar and a Plex movie server and most of my movies are trueHD atmos or DTS-MA and none of this files are displaying as atmos on soundbar ( they show up as PCM-MC ), only file showing as atmos is EAC3. 5.1 format . Is my only option to enjoy the atmos experience to change from appletv to Nvidia shield?
If you have an Apple TV, Plex will not be able to bitstream out the Atmos/DTS:X audio. It will output all of it as PCM up to 7.1. This is lossless audio, but if you want the bitstream, then you will need to change devices.
I just found your channel and it’s very informative. I really enjoy your style and content overall. Question for you, have you found the Apple TV 4K Dolby Vision implementation simply too dark? I’m using a 2022 ATV 4K with a 77” LG C1 and as someone else in the comments stated, in many cases content looks better in 4K SDR even though it’s Dolby Vision content. There is much talk of no set standard for HDR10 or Dolby Vision. Maybe that’s the problem. Just wanted to get your thoughts.
The average picture level of HDR appears too dim for my viewing room. So, I stream everything in SDR. Definite improvement in brightness. I do enable match frame rate though.
@@jerryumathat’s not how it works. HDR can be quite horrible for certain TVs on a constant basis. It’s typically way too dark. It doesn’t mean worse. SHD is still literally full resolution without the color, black level changes that HDR gives. It doesn’t make it better or worse, a lot of the time it’s preferable.
@@jerryuma yes, overall it definitely is, especially if you have a decent tv. Not all tvs that have Dolby vision and HDR10 have the wide color gamut to produce true HDR which can make it look mediocre, the only issue like I mentioned with HDR is that depending on the TV it can be very dark. I only use HDR with certain things, not everything that supports it because it doesn’t always look better. Personal preference really and the quality of TV, if you have a TV with a wide color gamut then HDR will look beautiful consistently most of the time, if it doesn’t then it will make things sometimes look worse than just using SDR instead, it’s not as simple as saying HDR is purely better 100% of the time.
Hey, I have just got a trinnov and for sole reason with the Apple TV set to Dolby atmos and it doesn’t play center channel or audio proper. It sound like center channel is off. When I set the Apple TV to 5.1 it works properly. Does anyone have any thoughts on what the issue is. Maybe a source setting on the Trinnov?
Thanks for your video. I ajusted my Apple TV with your settings but I’m experiencing some troubleshooting when the format changes from Dolby vision to hdr, sdr and vice versa. The screen turns black and keeps it that way until I turn off the Apple TV or disconnect it. Is there some settings for the TV that I have to make as well? I have a hisense U8G
Hmm, I'm not sure on Hisense settings. Most TVs have certain HDMI settings though per input, so maybe you need to make sure the input setting is proper to enable the right HDMI features and/or DV.
I can't think of anything special for that.
Just realized that Apple Music app has its own sound quality setting in Apps section…would be a good tip :)
Great item for a future video in this series, thanks!
This is really useful however i hate screen blanks and i switch between youtube and use OTT which are HDR/DV, so i left the settings intact
DV@60 On
Both match rate and frame off because hisense e7k does this automatically…
I can see the non hdr video performs well in this format ❤
What about supported refresh rate and fps? Isn’t that a limitation?
Not sure how you mean limitation. I run the UI at 60 Hz in my living room with auto frame rate enabled per the video.
Glad I could help!
Vision
Thank you for the video. What is the reason why you want to keep the menus in 4K SDR?
With Apple TV now having 4k HDR10+, would you still recommend 4k SDR on my OLED TV?
So the momentary black screen that I get when I play TH-cam videos on my ATV is due to having Match Dynamic Range and Frame rate?
Nice! For sure, use the HDR10+ on the Samsung.
YCbCr introduces a slight green tint to the picture (SDR only). The best choice is actually RGB High.
I'll try that out. I thought this was an old finding which isn't the case any more.
@@Techthusiasm from what I understand, it is still present on the latest gen versions. Keep in mind, it is very subtle, so it may not be all that noticeable to most.
All calibrators I’ve worked with recommend YCbCr.
I prefer keeping signals pure and not having extra color conversions, hence sticking to YCbCr.
Thank you!! So helpful!!
The Match Frame Rate and Content "ON" makes watching the TH-cam app very frustrating, especially coming back from a add.
Is there any fix for this?
I dezactivated because of that , i turn it off too!
Great video! I just purchased an Apple TV 4K 3 generation, watching your video I could not find Dolby Atmos that was weird there no options. Don’t know what to do. Also, I couldn’t calibrated either using my phone. Any tips regarding this issue. Thank you.
It only shows up if the Apple TV determines through the HDMI link that is connected to something that can receive and decode Atmos.
New Apple TV user. Just plugged it into an old non smart tv. Only shows center portion of screen. I selected several options but only shows center part of screen. Do I need a new tv? Or am I missing something. It is an hd capable tv. But old.
Hmm, hard to say. You'd have to see what resolutions are available as shown in the ATV menu and what happens when you try different ones.
If you don’t use HDR setting then apps wont make use of HDR such as games and screensaver apps like magic fireplace
I have a Yamaha RX-A1080 receiver ( only have 4 speakers and channel speaker) with a LG C2 OLED tv. Trying to figure out if picture quality and any other things would make it worth buying the Apple 4K newest generation.
I feel that ATV is the best streamer out there. But if you already have one you like, is working, and seems all good, you're probably fine.
Dolby atmos audio Works great for movies but for apple music it doesn't hit my subwoofer. I'm trying to see if there is something I can do on the receiver end to make it work.
Found the solution. I had to go into settings of my Apple TV, Apple Music and turn off Dolby.
What brand of high speed HDMI cables do you recommend?
You don't want to use the change format. You're degrading the audio with extra, unneeded lossy compression. Just let it output native.
If the ATV is not connected to an Atmos-capable device, then it won't present or send Atmos options or signals.
I missed what the advantage of running the UI in SDR?
Depending how you use our ATV and watch the most, that has often been the most default format.
My assistant audio is defaulted on. How do I turn that off
Perhaps in the accessibility area of the settings menu.
You should not stand there to hide all settings. Why do not get the dark mode for easy watching?
I'm not a dark mode UI fan, personally. I like light modes.
Yes, that should work.
I have a Nakamichi Shockwafe with Dolby Atmos connected to my TV via eArc. When turn it on there is no sound from the soundbar when using Apple TV.
Probably a TV or soundbar setting. I would contact the soundbar support.
newbie question.
I stop using apple tv the brightness with hdr/dovi it's so dim compare to fire cube 3 and shield tv
Interesting, I don't find it to be dim.
How can u use remote to switch to Bluetooth headphones without going to setup? Thanks
Try Control Center. Press and hold Home.
Thanks so much for the video very informative. One question which may have already been asked. Being in Australia does it matter if I set the 4K SDR settings to 60 Hz rather than 50Hz?
You would choose 50/60 depending on where you live. Same thing according to your local TV standards.
@@Techthusiasm thanks for getting back to me. I switched to 50Hz. And it automatically switches to Dolby 4K when I watch Apple TV.
Sir, Very useful tips yr video. I am in India. I am using Apple tv 4k with 8k 2.1 hdmi cable monoprice brand with Benq w2700i projector using Denon AVR 4700h receiver. But usable to get Dolbyvision.🎉
Thanks!
Mine crops the picture. I have a black bar on the top and bottom. I dont have the black bars when i switch to dolby vision tho. How do i fix this?
Any ideas? Thanks.
I haven't used a Sonos, but I would suspect the issues are there. I'd start with their support, I think.
I have an LG Oled and always wondered should I be in YCBR with 444 or RagV High/Low and what is the difference?
Does not matter what display. RGB High is best for the ATV4K. This was a quote from avsforum. I use this and Video Range on TV set to Limited.
How does apple tv works with a 4k projector with DV And DA feature?
Projectors don't really support Dolby Vision, so the Apple TV will just output everything as HDR10. Works great with my JVC.
Why does my Apple TV change Dolby Digital 5.1 to LPCM 7.1? Is there a way to change that in the settings? Thanks
ATV usually wants to output PCM for non-Atmos content. No worries with it. There is no additional loss to the source codec.
I'm really curious to see how the 98" QM8 turns out. :)
So the ATV is doing the upscaling and not the TV?
Is the Apple TV 4K 3rd gen better than the previous models in picture quality??
@@Lexidezi225 Fact alone that it now does HDR10+ is reason enough. There are probably other improvements.
Thanks for the video.
One question, do you use Dolby in this mode? 🤔
I have a Bose 650. Anything special I should do?????
is setting it to 4K SDR going to affect the PQ of the dynamic screen savers?
Yes, they will be in SDR then. If you want HDR screen savers, then reverse the setting. I need to make a video on that.
More vids like this covering more settings options pleas … question I have a Sonos playbar hooked up and there is real bad lip sync. All fresh cables including 2.1 HDMI cable. Any ideas ?
For sure! I've not had a Sonos. Do they have any kind of delay or auto lip sync setting?
It's probably just syncing HDMI signals, like frame rate and HDR/SDR. That's normal.
Can you tell me if the series Harlots is available in 2160p HDR or dolby vision?
Sorry, I'm not familiar with that series.
@@Techthusiasm The series is from 2017-2019 and has three seasons.
If you can only look at the image quality if you have a subscription.
Great video, maybe I missed it, but do you recommend Bitstream or PCM for audio? I have my ATV connected directly to an atmos capable soundbar system.
Which Dolby vision is more suitable? Bright or dark?
Hi, great video I had a question I was wondering why when I hook up my Apple 4k tv to the TV HDMI, my receiver plays and displays the Atmosdd on programs that have Atmos but when I hook up the Apple TV 4K straight to the receiver, I get PCM display is that supposed to be or is there a way to fix this and if so, when playing and showing PCM am I getting a true Atmos sound? thanks for your help.
This is normal, and it is what you want it to do for best sound.
Thanks
I think you're fine with what you mentioned.
So what do you set the first video option to? You said not Dolby vision…on mine I have more than one 4k sdr option…4k 50, 4k 60…etc….which one off all the options does one pick? None? Am I missing something?
You'd generally want to run 4K SDR and 60 Hz (in the US).
First time user of any apple products and videos like these are great to help me set it up correctly, Thank you!
Happy to help!
Sorry, I'm not experienced with Sonos menus/setup.
My Apple TV App don’t have Audio… all
The other that’s working
Do you recommend trying an audio extractor like OREI 429 to try to get Atmos when tv doesn’t support earc but soundbar and Apple TV do?
Is the remote IR or RF? How do you control it if the AVR is in another room
Both. It connects to the ATV via RF/BT, but it can issue learned IR commands to other devices. I have an IR receiver/transmitter under my TV that sends volume control to my audio processor downstairs.
You have your Apple TV connected to your receiver or directly to your TV?
Mine is direct to TV. All the sources in my living room are direct. In the theater, I switch through my Anthem AVM.
Give it a try, for sure. I've thankfully not dealt with audio delay issues in my setup in a long time.
just FYI i set-up a pair of home Pods scroll to apps under TV I noticed Atmos was enable but lossless audio was disable of course I enable are you aware of this?
How do you mean lossless audio was disabled? The ATV doesn't support lossless audio.
Superb video, I also got it set up like this after watching many video's, but you made it all in to one awesome package! I did find that enabling Dolby Vision makes the screen savers even better, but then you get even more black screens haha!
Thanks!
Does selecting 444 chroma require you to set hdmi source to pc mode?
I do not run my TV input on the G2 in PC mode for Apple TV.
Thank you!
Hmm, I've had no problems with lip sync in either of my rooms with Apple TV. That's one of the most frustrating problems we have.
I recommend RGB high instead of ycbcr
why though?
Hey I have issues with my Apple TV 4K causing crackling and poping noises I'm not the only one having this problem and it's such a piss off because idk if apple will even care to fix this issue
Yikes! Report it to Apple for sure.
@@Techthusiasm it's so annoying like I should be able to use it and other people have this issue I'm shocked it hasn't happened to you knowing that you have a dolby atmos sound system
I honestly think I have a setting wrong or something idk but it's pissing me off
I can say I have not experienced any noise like this with either of my Apple TVs in either room.
@@Techthusiasm I also have a Sony tv and Sony is kwon for audio drop outs so I went in bought two ethernet cables for the Apple TV and the Sony tv. That’s supposed to fix the audio drop outs when just using regular wireless wifi.
Does wanting HDR10+ for Samsung TV's change any of these settings? Thanks.
Not really. It will just auto switch to HDR10+ when it needs to.
@@Techthusiasm Thanks. It is weird that on the Apple Movie / Show listing info that it will say movie is in ATMOS, Dolby Vision, etc. but NOT HDR10+ ----- Even though my TV says it is playing in HDR10+. Guess Apple TV is doing some conversion or something.
I just purchased a regular Samsung 4K…I HAD FOR 5 YEARS OLED SAMSUNG…very big difference…would an APPLE 4K BOX make things smoother/sharper or should I just return it and buy an OLED Samsung?
Exactly how mine is set up! Thanks for the video, great work.
Great minds think alike! :)

Olá!
Minha Apple TV chegou. Qual app que suporta menu Blu-ray?
Mrmc apresenta erro." Menu não suportado"
Realmente não há boas opções para suporte completo ao menu Blu-ray na Apple TV. Você precisa de um player de rede local mais dedicado.
@@Techthusiasm Alguém conhece algum?
How can I get the Apple TV ti run through my av receiver. It doesn’t work when I run it through earc
You can plug the the Apple TV into another HDMI port on your TV and then connect the eARC port to your receiver. Or just plug the Apple TV into the receiver and then connect the receiver to the TV.
@@Techthusiasm that’s the issue. It doesn’t play video when ran through the receiver. When it’s ran from the TV I am uncertain if I’m getting Dolby atmos
That's probably an HDMI setting issue. Make sure the HDMI ports in the receiver settings are configured for advanced or higher bandwidth.
I am going to configure them to 8K when I get home. Fingers crossed
Hello, if i have a Sony 5.1 Speaker system and shown in Audio Output but not in inmersive audio, is it a problem?
You don't want to run the output of the ATV as 5.1. It is re-encoding down again to lossy Dolby Digital. Only use PCM or Atmos.
I have a Blu Ray Player with 5.1 surround system connected to tv with hdmi arc. Apple tv plays the menu sounds in surround and 5.1 movies also. For stereo content it plays stereo. On the settings, sound format is set to auto and sound output set to tv speakers. If i go in Temporarily output setting, there is an option for receiver unit. Should i change something?@@Techthusiasm
That sounds correct. Most of that should show up as/output as multi-channel PCM.
This is raja from India
I recently purchased the Apple TV 4K 2022 model and connected with Denon 4700 AVR home theater system. In Apple TV video/audio setup, I set the Audio HDMI output as auto and I'm able to get Dolby ATMOS for the supported moved. But for Dolby ATMOS non-supported movies, I get Multi-channel PCM 5.1 instead of Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 (the actual audio code of the movies from streaming apps).Plz clarify this any reason ?
That's normal. The Apple TV decodes the Dolby and outputs it as PCM. There's no problem.
I have this same issue Raja states here. There is an audio quality difference between Dolby digital plus from any Android tv box vs Multi channel PCM or stereo PCM from ATV4K. Any fix for this?
@Techthusiasm@@sundarvela6850 I'm having the same problem - outputs from Plex and other streaming services at PCM - but from Apple TV+ app, it outputs at Atmos. This is with a new LG C3 and a JBL 9.1 sound bar. I've tried switching around inputs and HDMI cables with no luck.
Can you help me please, I have an apple tv for a long time now I think its older generation 4k, I recently bough a Samsung q900a sound bar which is atmos capable. So I have connected by apple tv to sound bar and from sound bar to tv. The problem is apple tv is showing as it is outputting atmos but on the soundbar it is not showing as atmos, just immersive audio. How can I get atmos to run on my soundbar. Thank you.
Atmos is immersive audio, but I'm not sure on the specifics of using that soundbar, sorry.
@@Techthusiasm thank you for the reply.
how can i add bose lifestyle 48 home theatre system? what output i will get 5.1 or 7.1?
I'm not 100% sure on that system, but it looks like a 5.1 setup?
I recently bought a Xiaomi A2 series 58” that is Dolby Vision HDR10 and HLG enabled. Are these settings the optimal for my kind of TV? Thanks
Also, it also has the eARC port under HDMI 2, therefore I assume that I should be plugging in my Belkin 48GBPS 4K HDMI into that respective port.
@@Techthusiasm no I don’t at the moment, however, I do plan to get couple of HomePods and set them on stereo later on down the line.
OK, then you don't need to be concerned even with eARC or not.

You might talk to Audioholics (Gene) about all this. Gene believes the SDR setting gives the most all around video joy.
I'm not sure what you mean, leave it in SDR all the time? I wouldn't want to do that at all. You want match on so you watch HDR content in HDR.
Hello, i have a 5.1 surround sound system with a yamaha rx 485 receiver. What settings should i set in order to get the best audio possible knowing that my apple tv is connected to the amp not the tv and then earc...
@@Techthusiasm i do not even have a 4k tv nor Dolby atmos. I just have a basic 5.1 surround sound system
Have a great day
Why always out of sync if atmos is on for me . Again only if atmos is ON

@@Techthusiasm I am asking did you see in Netflix Dolby atmos but not showing it’s 5.1or 7.1 format

Well, not every show in Netflix is in Atmos. Plus if you are looking at TV series, some seasons may be Atmos and other seasons of the same show might not be.

I downloaded the latest firmware. Whatever I do I cannot get a picture anymore when attached to the Anthem AVM70. If however I attach the box to my LG Oled C8 it runs fine. Have you heard this situation before?
I have not seen that. Try disconnecting and powering everything down, then reconnect and start it back up.
@@Techthusiasm Thanks. It did not do the trick but I did find the cause. The AVM has a 2.0 board. My Oled has got 2.1when I switch the Apple tv box to Dolby Vision 30HZ it runs fine. So I will run the Apple straight to the Oled and use eARC for sound 50 hz or 60 hz is no problem for the Oled. I will make a post on the Anthem forum as well.
Help please.
There are a few comments here about content being too dark. I haven't noticed that. Perhaps your display needs certain settings for DV-mode.
Definitely darker. Set it to SDR.....
The average picture level of HDR appears too dim for my viewing room. So, I stream everything in SDR. Definite improvement in brightness. I do enable match frame rate though.
A few folks are saying this. I don't notice that. It might depend on your TV and your TV's settings?
SDR is not as good as HDR so it will be worse.
@@naytewilson thank you for your input. The man at Best Buy I bought tv from told me hdr is better.
No suggestions here. I've not experienced this with my Anthem gear.
