i really agree about phrase "Thinking outside of the box" limit creativity, most time people said that to me or my friend not really understand what it means, or even able to explain it, but that phrase become trademark about creativity.
Thank goodness this is becoming important again, for too long public education systems have been getting ride of classes that allow a free flow of creative energy. We need these things!
Yes, we limit our potential. Usually even not we, but the society. School, teachers, our employers. It is refreshing to see the importance of such a thing becoming a topic of conversation
I think it also about seeing that creative isn't just drawing, composing signing etc. It's whyat you love to create. I know home builders and carpenters that love what they do.
We've all got the ability to be creative, no doubt about that. Definitely would love to see such topics with more awareness so that our youth might be able to once again create freely.
Important message Daniel is giving. So many of us were raised to believe anything creative or do with the arts is a waste of time but in reality - the greatest thinkers are the most creative and we need that very much right now.
The school system is the issue, or the people that control core subjects. We drill our kids with numbers and facts and theories, and do so little to let their imaginations grow. Nothing new that helps is created, unle3ss we teach our kids to create. Good talk.
It's a relief to see that we have realised this for our pre-school age children. Through play comes creativity which does more for brain development then we actually thought
It was a very narrow scope for what was considered creative 40 years ago, and before that it was a lot wider! It's refreshing to see we are enlightening ourselves again and understanding how creativity intercepts all facets of life.
Brilliant way to think of creativity and all that it encompasses! Adored the way this way put forward, makes creativity seem like a much more welcoming place
Sometimes laziness can be a nice opportunity for opening your creativity. Sometimes if I can't find a solution I just stop trying to search for it and do nothing! After some time my brains reboots and I can find a solution that's most effective!
You make a great observation. What you're talking about is called incubation. Our subconscious continues working on the problem even though we aren't thinking about it. There's neuroscience behind it, but basically the brain is making connections with past and new experiences and knowledge until, POW, we get an answer (aka: eureka moments, lightbulb moments, or ah ha moments). Some great ways to support incubation are taking walks, taking showers, or sleeping on it. Some ways to kill incubation are spending lots of time on phones, computers, and TVs. Screen time doesn't allow the brain to access the default mode network which is where incubation takes place.
trying to will myself out of an artistic block and came across this video - what an absolute delight and definitely fuel for inspiration! Thank you Daniel.
It has only been within this last year that I have realised creativity and how we express ourselves with it is totally unique to the individual. I am working hard at not comparing myself and allowing myself just to feel through my creative process and not judge it, but instead just let it flow through me.
Remember when public schools started to act creative arts classes? Lack of funding and the like but I dare say we chopped down a lot of innovation when that happened. I think this talk is so spot on, we don't even realise but so much of what we do every day is our brains being creative as they problem solve and observe. We are all creative beings with something to offer.
We have been lead to believe that only the arts allows creativity but when it truth, every day we have to use our brains in creative ways to problem solve. As is being put forward here, not putting limits on our creativity is so important
I was so quickly hooked watching this, I've always struggled to tap into way to implement my creativity but this speech gave me some ideas! I so needed this.
Daniel has the ability to captivate audiences, provide great content, and make the information relatable. This presentation is a perfect blend of his knowledge, humor, and yes, creativity. And, if there was ever one to make mistakes, it would be me! Thank you for sharing your gifts, Daniel!
Daniel Cape is awesome! I saw this talk live and loved it! Daniel is dynamic, funny, and has a deep understanding of creativity. As Daniel says - Creativity is not magic. It's something we all have within us.
Risk, uncertainty, making mistakes, and compassion for ourselves and others -- experiential learning at its best! On behalf of the world, thanks for what you do, Dan!
I needed to see this today, not because I am not creative, but because I make up excuses not to be. I love being creative and yet I put it aside to do things I think are more important, how silly right?
I have a great book by Edward De Bono with a bunch of exercises to encourage creativity. Really just a bunch of word games but it gets the creative brain working, Though I always struggle to ‘make mistakes’ when I do it- no one is marking me or will even see it so this is all in my head. I get it when he said if you don’t make mistakes, you aren’t doing it right
I wish that we had understood the importance of creativity even 20 years ago. I think of all the children who were robbed of the opportunity to fully develop their brains and it just heartbreaking
Unfortunately the education system has ignored the research on creativity for decades. I've read reports from the 90s by the American Psychological Association about how to support student creativity and don't see any of their recommendations in schools today. Still, we've just got to keep trying to make a change. Thanks Gaia!
Great talk Daniel! I like the feather levitation trick you used in your talk. When people understand what creativity is, they will believe we are all creative.
I am so glad I finally was able to hear your thoughts in creative research. It sounds like your move has opened up the doors you wanted. I look forward to hearing more.
Creativity does not necessitate novelty or utility. Creativity is often - though not exclusively - a process that arises from the interactions between the concious an unconscious. It is a process that is opaque, (i.e. there are epistemological limits) to the conscious mind. In Hamlet there is a wonderful line: “Though bound within a nutshell, I would count myself king of infinite space - were it not for bad dreams.” The nutshell is our skull, and yet inside this physically bounded cranial nutshell I can imagine myself as God if I feel the inclination, but there are the bad dreams of chaos and what lurks beneath consciousness that limit. There is the fear of madness, and creatives and madness have a long association. The product of creativity may be the artefact of a form, or it may be just something that burbles up from the unconscious and is forgotten. It is probably ideosyncratically novel, but not novel in the sense of not being an expression of something that arises out of our common history, brain substrate and evolutionary history. It may have absolutely no practical value or utility - or it may. All of the above not withstanding, everyone whom I have encountered is creative, and creatively can be fostered through allowing oneself to be creative and spending more time playing with creativity.
Can't help but wonder with the introduction of standardized testing and lack of funding for music and art in grade school - are we purposely being robbed of our ability to think in a creative way?
Beautiful response, Laura, I agree. Betty, you ARE creative! You just need to look for examples of it in your life. Maybe you'll find a surprising solution to an everyday problem like finding your way around an unexpected detour or substituting a missing ingredient in a recipe. This is creativity! It's that simple. Everyone is creative!
Creative is as creative does!
I have had ample time to be creative but no inspiration. Thank you Daniel. Brilliant.

I love that - it's so important to give the mind a rest and allow for moments of nothingness so we might find some clarity

this is great, we have such limitless capacity when it comes to being creative and honestly it could be what saves us from ourselves.
Oh I so believe this, so much truth here. We all have it it just needs room to grow.

It's so understanding
Well, lots of time to learn to be creative locked up at home.
I have done more creative projects this last year than ever before - it has been so amazing
Think outside the box, that's what we all need.
YAHOO! This is terrific @Danielcape
Thanks Erin Cotter!
Fantastic Daniel! I love how committed you are to helping people see and tap into their own creativity. I agree with you...we are ALL creative!
Thank you, Janey!
What an absolutely wonderful discussion. Well thought out message and it sure resonates. EXCELLENT. Wonderful work you're doing, Daniel.
Than you, Chris!
Thank you for sharing your passion of creativity with us and helping us understand creativity in our own lives!
Thank you, Lance!

This seems like it should be a project class you kids in school. Teach them young and they will be creative for a lifetime?

This is me, I try and write and I look at it and think I hate it so everyone will think the same.
My fear is we are teaching computers to do creative tasks, and I think it is robbing humans of the beauty of making art in any form.
No kidding, I see those stick figure families on rear windows all over!!!
