  • We recently went chasing waterfalls in Dumfries and Galloway!
Back Burn Waterfall, also known as Mares Braids Waterfall is located near Sandyhills in Dumfries & Galloway along the Southwick Coastal Reserve on the Solway Coast. You can easily drive past the entrance to this walk without even knowing where it is - as we have done!
⚠️ This walk is only accessible when the tide is out so you must check the tide times before you head out. The tides at Sandyhills can come in very quickly and people have been caught out here before ⚠️
Past Sandyhills, park on the layby at the T-junction signposted for Southwick Graveyard. The entrance to the walk is across the road.
To start with the terrain is of loose stoned path down to "Needles Eye". When walking along the coast and towards "Lot's Wife" sea stack, the terrain is very soft walking over the salt marsh that has been eroded by the tide. There are gaps in the path therefore you have to jump over these. There is the occasional larger gap and at one point I questioned whether we should be doing this walk with the kids but we managed to find a way round!
The challenge of the walk was totally worth it. The excitement and wonder on their wee faces was priceless. The sound of the water hitting the rocks below was mesmerising and made you feel alive!
    ✔️ Waterfall
    ✔️ Beautiful coastal scenery
✔️ Great for discussion with kids about coastal geology
    ✔️ Lot's Wife sea stack
    ✔️ Needles Eye rock arch
