  • SOUTH WEST COASTAL 300 E10: My road trip continues along Scotland’s south coast visiting the towns of Kirkcudbright, Gatehouse of Fleet and a historical viaduct at the Big Water of Fleet in Dumfries & Galloway. ➡️ See all of my SWC300 Road Trip in Scotland here → bit.ly/mwt_swc300
Today I drove from Creetown close to Newton Stewart along to Sandyhills Beach just south of Dumfries - enjoying some delightful Scottish countryside along the way. I was following the South West Coastal route that traces the south coast of Scotland which passes through some pleasant towns, rolling countryside and gorgeous coastline.
I started the day by exploring the Big Water of Fleet Viaduct, a massive 20 arch 900ft long viaduct originally built in 1861. After taking a stroll across it and admiring the views I drove to my first town of the day - Gatehouse of Fleet where I found an old cotton mill, a peaceful park and a historical high street serving as the centre of town. Lovely place and well worth stopping by.
I continued driving east stopping at Carrick Beach overlooking the Islands of Fleet for some lunch - there wasn’t very much about so it was lucky I came prepared with a packed lunch. I drove down some narrow single-track coastal roads and eventually arrived in Kirkcudbright by mid afternoon. There I took a self guided tour along the harbour, down close to the marina, past the 16th century MacLellan's Castle ending up at Kirkcudbright Tolbooth which is now an art gallery.
Once I’d learnt about the history of Kirkcudbright I pressed on towards Sandyhills Beach which would be the final part of the vlog. Along the way I visited Orchardton Tower, Dhoon Beach and the ruins of Dundrennan Abbey all whilst enjoying yet more stunning scenery on the south coast of Scotland.

Haha, I was just thinking what a way to start the vlog with that viaduct, then you took the words right out of my mouth! Love that you could walk up onto the bridge as it reminds me a little of the one in Glenfinnan, but obviously walking on that is prohibited! The Mil by the river in Fleet with its waterwheel and other buildings were so quaint. Really reminds me of the National Trust's Morden Hall Park in South London. Well done on the pronunciation of Kirkcudbright, I know for sure I'd have pronounced it incorrectly and there'd be a few comments pointing this out! 🤦‍♀ it was a stunning little town, really appreciated the pretty architecture and the harbour too.

Yes pronouncing places can be tough, I've researched towns and villages in Europe before and still got it wrong! I got a bit of stick in my Romania videos for butchering some of the places I visited so I know what you mean. Glad you liked the video, I always think it's best to start with an explosion and work up from there! Another fun day in Scotland!!

Really nice mill wheel! Internationally we saw a lot of shepherds but none of them were on ATVs. That was funny. FANTA! 🧙‍♀️🪄 Guess noone was home! 😂😂

Love waterfalls! The SW300 is on my bucket list. I keep coming back to Europe instead of going to other contingent.

Hi Matt, your videos is everything I love about Britain - the country side, the history and the quaintness everywhere! Last summer, we visited Kirkcudbright bright too, when we went on holiday to the Forest of Galloway, we even went into a swimming pool in the town for a bit of exercise. The town is so pretty!

Thanks very much, Olga! Glad you like the video and what a coincidence you visited these places last year! Kirkcudbright sure is a lovely town, and the Galloway Forest Park is such a beautiful area - wonderful place for a holiday I'm sure! Thanks for watching 👍

Great videos Matt. I always watch these before travelling to the area with my drone. You show the paths and ways that are great for getting excellent footage together with the lesser known landmarks. Brilliant.

@@MattWhitingsEurope Mostly the DJI Air 2S. I also have the Phantom 4 and the Mavic Mini 2. I will probably get the Mavic 3 in a few months time. What's your drone?

Good video. Coincidentally we were at a few of the places you visited about a month ago. The viaduct is brilliant and it's in a huge nature reserve. We went on from Gatehouse to Creetown, then round Wigtown Bay to Mossyard Beach which is great. We stayed near Kirkcudbright. Its a lovely town and so colourful and on Thursdays in summer they hold a Scottish night in the square with piping and dancing.Great part of the world and a favourite of ours as its not too touristy.

Thanks for watching, glad you liked the video and it brought back a few memories! Completely agree that it's a lovely and often overlooked part of Scotland, I wish I had of spent a bit more time in the area. The Scottish night in the square sounds tremendous, I bet the atmosphere is full of energy and soul - would have loved to experience it.

Sorry about that. I had the mic set up incorrectly so it amplified my already loud voice. Hopefully I've learnt from it.
