I think an important tip that you missed is teaching someone else to fly your drone, whether it be a little kid, a friend, a sibling, or even your parents. The moment is always so wholesome and gets me up and flying again. Its very motivating!

I feel like this. I have a dji mini 3. I used to take it abroad and record mountain shots, but now so many restrictions it's become overwhelming. I do feel guilty that it's sat in my cupboard for months. Another factor is that so many idiots have made it difficult for the rest of us.

Great video Russ! I would like to add an additional tip:
Rather than randomly putting the drone in the air, try to create projects of varying scope. This will ensure purpose. These could be something like for example:
-Perfecting a long complex waypoints mission around several POI:s.
-Creating a transition between different flights of the same area.
-Shooting and editing a 1 minute showreel for your town, your property, an event.
Basically, setting targets for yourself, little and big challenges (not unsurmountable ones).
I find with this structured "project" approach, flying feels more purposeful and never just random.
Hey, it works for me anyway. YMMV.
    Take care Russ! 🌷

Using Google Maps is a good tip. Personally, I use the 3D view on Maps and Earth to scout locations. If it looks cool on Goolge, it will look even better with a drone. I use it to plan shots. My problem is what to do with the video and pictures. No one wants to watch an hour of raw video, flying around, setting up shots. The time it takes to edit down to something watchable brings me down.

I am burning through the RC hobby. I started on helicopters in 2013 before realizing that I'd be broke and tired of fixing rotorheads before I would ever be good enough to fly anything more interesting than a fixed pitch. I went to FPV in 2017-18 but mostly flew around slow in angle mode and tons of collecting dust. I actually had more fun getting it setup as it was a PNP kit. I bought a Mavic Air 2 a couple years later and spent the entire year exploring and getting some amazing shots. This put me back into FPV with vengeance and I have a fleet of freestyle, cinewhoops and even a long range rig with DJI O3. Here in 2024 I am bored again and bought a Arrma Vorteks 4x4 3S and I am a surface guy for the moment but I know I will go back to FPV....Mavic still resting in box though I do pull it out make sure it still boots and the batteries are still healthy around 50-75% charge.

Another way can be to sit down on a railroad hub and fly for recording trains. One day not much, the other day trains are swarming like flies....

If I'm on the road, I have one packed. A DJI if I know the area or an Autel if I don't. My experience with DJI's geofencing is that it sometimes is overly aggressive - imposing limits well below what is permissible in the location I'm flying from. Autel doesn't do that. This may require a bit more work on my part to verify what I can and cannot do in a specific location, but I'm OK with that.
And I also have the sub 250 gram versions for travel to locations where that's a necessity.

Another way to keep from getting bored is to dig out that old drone that you have not flown in a while and get some air time. I started out with a Phantom. Now I do 99% of my flying with the Air 2S with a Mini as my backup. Regretfully my Phantom spends a great deal of time without seeing the sunshine. Dig out that old drone and see just how much you have forgotten about how fun it was to fly with another platform and another app. Charge that bad boy up and get it in the sky.

Always at least one drone in the car, but I've had the same challenges and found a few of these really helped, especially flying with others. But the biggest thing for me is now starting to capture video. I bought the drone as a stills photographer, and that's still my big motivator, but I'm forcing myself to capture at least ten clips or moves from each location and starting to build videos of the outings. Last night this worked out well because I only had time to get to a local place I've photographed hundreds of times, but I did not have any video footage at sunset, so I spent almost an hour getting footage and will try to edit it this weekend. The video editing skills have been very exciting for me. I appreciate you introducing me to CapCut!

I’m recently retired now and plan to do a LOT more flying, since the park will be mostly empty of people. I have the DJI FPV, and just bought an Avata. Couldn’t agree with you more about the feeling of flight that you really don’t get from watching the view on a phone or tablet screen !

I use my drones for searching for lost pets. People can’t seem to be able to keep their pets secure in my area so there are always new searches daily.

Great video Russ. I'm in that boat that I just think I've filmed everything there is to film in PR and lost interest in flying. Maybe trying one of the "smart modes" like doing a hyperlapse will get me going again!😊

Winter in MO is when I get bored with flying. When its brown and ugly. If there was some snow then it might be more interesting.

Great information, however I will pass on the FPV and goggles. I tried the expensive first goggles DJI produced and I didn't like them. I got dizzy using them and they were too expensive to try later versions. You should let everyone know that if you "use your drone for good," you still have to have a Part 107 as it is considered a business use, money changing hands or not... I live near Memphis, and there is little of interest here, maybe the Mississippi River or the Bass Pro Pyramid, but I have to travel a long way to enjoy flying. I enjoy getting others interested in drones, and the best way to do that is to hand the controller to them so they can see how easy it is to learn.
I have done a couple real estate and other videos for people, but don't accept money because I don't want to get into that much detail or tax implications.

another ideas: get into building your own. Try different type (for example get a wing/airplane drone). Train other, less skilled drone owners.

Pull it apart and put the parts on a plane. It is a bit tricky but can be done..

I was tired of if flying away and crashing, Yes, it is my fault, I want to go into the foothills of Colorado since I only life a few miles away but every time I tried it would crash until my DJI magic Pro took off and I could not find it, that was a thousand dollar lost, and more so I said screw it. Now with all the rules not worth it. I still have the DJI Mavic and if I want to take it up a few feet I might try it. I never did have fun it was a pain from day one

Here is an example of why you want to have a drone with you at ALL TIMES. A particular route that I drive, but not often - say once every moth or 2 has a field, semi-open, usually with tall grass, and occasionally several horses. Last year, when I did NOT have my drone with me, I passed the spot. The sun was just rising, barely peeping over the horizon. This field, due to the dew point (due to the dew) was awash in wispy threads of mist. It was a PERFECT SETTING. And I was perfectly unprepared. Swearing never to get caught short that way again, fast forward to a few weeks back. I captured one of the singular best clips, just under 3 minutes. That sounds short, but so were every #1 Beatle hit in the early to mid 60's.

I have a question about using your drone for non profit organizations. Do you need a part 107 license to provide those types of organizations with drone footage? Like your example of the youth camp or maybe like a church camp or function? Thank you for the great videos.

Gray area. Technically a non-profit is not a “business” because they aren’t in existence to make money. I would reach out and email your local FSBO to inquire. But if someone challenges you on it, they just aren’t a good human. 😁

I have a q5004K drone and loved flying it around my own property, but not so fun these days with all the restrictions and rules, tests and Real ID requirements, just afraid to even take it out in my own yard for 15 minutes as a hobby. I have been flying drones since they first came out and was one of the first to get the drone registration when they first required it. I used to have a commercial helicopter license and flew a Cessna 150 airplane back in the 70s, and did not have so many rules as they have on these small plastic toys. I just want to fly as a hobby flyer, the battery only lasts about 15 minutes, it is not like I am going to be flying cross country with it. Well I am 76 years old and seems every time I find something fun to do as a hobby, Uncle Sam comes along and regulates out of reach . So many regulations, on that really gets me is if you hover your drone, oh say 6 feet off the ground and take a picture, you have to have a commercial drone license to sell that picture, but if you put that same camera on a tripod and take the very same picture, you can do whatever you want with it. I use to use my drone on rough ground as a tripod, the Q500 4K is very stable when hovering, but now that is against the law.

My issue is I live in North Virginia and am a father to little kids. So there is restricted places I can fly and the times I can drive somewhere to fly is few and far between. Not sure what to do!
