What happens in your throat when you beatbox? | Tom Thum & Dr Matthew Broadhurst | TEDxSydney

- Beatboxer Tom Thum has a symphony in his throat, but how does he make those sounds? Armed with a microphone and camera, get up close and personal as we peer down the back of Tom Thum's throat. In this eye opening, somewhat stomach turning and frequently hilarious talk and performance, Tom Thum is joined on stage by Ear Nose & Throat Surgeon, Dr Matthew Broadhurst as they reveal what happens behind the scenes. It's wet, it's gooey, it's strange, it's amazing and possibly the first time anything like this has been attempted on stage. Beat Boxer Tom Thum appears to have not only a symphony orchestra but also a jazz band, techno DJ, 80’s synth-pop group and collection of exotic world instruments residing somewhere in his throat. Recognised worldwide for his obscure talent to manipulate his vocal chords, Tom confirms to his audience that there is no sound he can’t mimic. Propelled to Internet stardom with his 2013 TEDxSydney performance, which quickly became the highest viewed TEDx video of all time, Tom can now be seen alongside composer Gordon Hamilton, performing his own world's first, original beatbox symphony, 'Thum Prints’.
Dr Matthew Broadhurst is an Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon based in Brisbane, Australia with a special interest in caring for the professional voice patient. He completed an additional two years of specialty training and advanced techniques in laryngeal surgery and voice restoration at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA under the guidance of world renowned and innovative laryngeal surgeon Professor Steven Zeitels. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The question everyone is wondering
How TF can he handle that thing being up his nose and into his throat without gagging or being uncomfortable
It is really hard to handle it but you know i bet he tryed it ALOT of times without going on stage
He said they used some local anaesthetic at 9:30
The doctor numbed his throat
Yupp
Good question
The fact that he could do this with that thing basically in his throat was impressive on its own right!
This will probably be recommended in 2023

A few things:
1. That surgeon must have incredible stamina in his forearms/shoulder muscles to hold a scope up for that long
2. Also, to keep a relatively still image of the larynx while Tom was moving and beatboxing shows his expertise and skill
3. Tom must have a very strong will to overcome his gag reflex!
Mackie Dee the 3rd one makes him sus....
I just had that 3rd one a few weeks ago, and let me tell you, I wasn't strong-willed enough....
No gag reflex
Hmmmmm
Sounds suspicious

That was massively cool in my opinion. I always find it amazing how the body works, and the fact that this man could hold himself together and not gag as it went down his nose and down his throat was so awesome. Kudos to him, am I right?
Yea pretty crazy stuff, I couldn’t imagine pulling that off myself haha. It looked like a party in his mouth! Humans have such a massive range of abilities-and we kinda look like aliens 😂
Gabrielle Smock
Ikr! That looked incredibly painful!
I think they numbed his throat
You right
Yes, I'm an opera singer and have had this done, and it's hard enough just to sing a few notes. Also, I have a super strong gag reflex, so I could not deal with the one they put down your throat...I had to have the nasal one, and they had to anesthetize my nose so I could tolerate it. So he's really something....and then there's his actual incredible talent....what he can do vocally is simply AMAZING!
“His vocal range is so insane”

What an absolute legend, his first TEDx appearance was one of the first beatboxing videos I had seen and played a huge role in why I started. Even to this day he is still beyond creative and a next level performer, Tom Thum is next level!
Amazing and very insightful. Great to see Tom back and I hope this isn’t the last time.

I will never look at beatboxing the same way ever again. You can't unsee this anymore than you could stop the morbid curiosity to watch it in the first place. Not too mention, I SALUTE YOU SIR for performing with equipment up your nose and down your throat!! My Pharynx off to you?
