The GOAT Persona game. Also you should check out the extended Persona 4 media. They make Narukami(The MC) an actual established character, and the best written Atlus character imo. Persona Arena 1, 2 & Persona 4 Dancing are direct sequels. And the Persona 4 anime & Persona Q really shined in making him his own person Oddly enough out of the three main protags Yu is easily the most fleshed out and explored character. Makoto & Joker aren't given much personalities in their anime adaptions or spinoffs
idk about makoto, haven’t really consumed much p3 media but i think akiren has a personality! he’s like a silly theater kid, which definitely makes sense. he’s definitely a little overdramatic.
Makoto's character arc in the movie is really, really good. A lot of people kinda minimize him to his initial moments of "I don't care", but he starts to grow past that in the first movie alone. He starts to allow himself to truly care, to start forming bonds, only for his hesitation to lead to the death of a friend. From there, he is able to move on, undo his regression, and make the ultimate sacrifice for the friends he truly came to care about. The movies really do expand on the arc he goes through in the game, give them a watch (or another watch) and I think those things will become more noticeable :)
whenever I play persona 4, I felt more and more closer to accepting myself, which makes me feel a little better. I have always loathed myself due to being bullied to the point where I ended up experiencing SA from my classmates in middle school and them spreading rumors telling people falsehoods about what occurred when I remember everything that occurred and cant remember the worse parts of it. I had points where I would blame myself because I thought I was a incredibly flawed person that deserved the hatred everyone was giving me at that time and didnt deserve being loved cause of it. Somepoint, I got the point where I was finally given love but I still deny it as I was confused as to why I was being treated nicely and not as I was being treated for years. In a way, Persona made me become a little more open about that side of myself rather than hide it and realize that Im valid for feeling confused and I do deserve being loved. I think the character that I understood the most is Rise because of that. I am sorry for spilling all of this though but I love when a video game can address topics like this. This is a great video btw!
I’m still playing the game and I can say that Persona 4 is doing so much for me, and honestly I’ve never felt so connected to a game before since Yakuza. And Narukami? After watching the anime he’s become a favourite of mine, the most human of the protagonists imo. Amazing vid Jason 💛
What I really like about the protagonist in this game is that the anime and manga takes on him made him a very lonely character which fits the game as well always being cold and isolated until he awakens his Persona then chooses to become closer to others to not only give him a reason to fight but also makes sure no one goes through the same thing he does and when what he cares about most is almost taken away from him he realizes that he's not lonely anymore and never will be which leads into his 2nd awakening at the end of the game.
I just finished this game for the first time 6 days ago. It’s my first persona game where the story actually grabbed me! I tried p5 and p3 but only made it about ten hours into each. I definitely plan on playing p4 again, if only to see the investigation squad again and finish the social links I neglected (sorry chie, you didn’t deserve to be the only party member that wasn’t maxed)
thank you for activly going through what kanji and naoto went through as well as what their shadows actually represented. not to get into to much detail, i went through a similar journey as these two and came to the same conclusions as them. But even now, it feels like the entire world is putting pressure on me because i didnt make the same decision. even my best friend who made a different decision, any time the topic gets brought up and i try to talk it feels like at every turn my own voice gets turned down because i didnt make the same choice as them, and as such am not going through the same struggle as them. kanji and naotos decision never mattered to me, what matters is being able to face yourself and make the decision, acknowledging as many sides of you as possible, and moving on rather than lock away and force yourself to do things you dont really want just to avoid a certain image
@@AliasAnimates I’m so glad my explanation worked for you. I was really worried people would take it the wrong way, but I was just trying to objectively look at it from a narrative perspective.
For a long time, i didn’t like Rise that much because of her attention seeking moments, but what you said kinda put things into perspective. Maybe me and her are more alike than id like to admit. (She still a bit too *freaky* though)
I love the way Persona 4 focuses on the more subtle inner issues with the self. Its a very grounded experience that just feels *real*. To say something about Rise: not enough people really talk about her depth as a character. She's obviously so much more than her light, playful flirting, and even that is because of the context of the protagonist being the first person to really see her for who she is (barring her grandmother ofc). And while you say that she isn't very relatable, I do think that her broad arc is actually pretty relatable! Her shadow struggle and her subsequent social link arc focuses on her struggle to deal with the multiple sides of herself she has (one could almost even say, the different personas she puts on!) and that in itself is something i think can be very relatable! I've gone (and continue to go) through those feelings and i would be surprised if no one else ever felt that way. I really do love the connection between her arc and personas as a general concept though.
@@_ace_defective_ I think Rise is very relatable in terms of her actual struggles now that I think about it. Obviously it’s not going to be to the scale of being an idol. But a lot of people certainly can relate to
@@JacobCruise yeah, obviously I don't think that is exactly a relatable thing LMAO but the general concept is so good and honestly her social link really does a lot to make her character even deeper. it's one of my fav links in the whole game :)
If you want to learn more about the protagonist, I suggest watching the anime of persona 4! I think the characterization of him there was really well done and worth looking into if you have the chance to check it out.
there is one more thing that im not sure that anyone else has seemed to point out for the main character. And that might be the fact that he is able to use multiple personas which i think could link to the fact he has to move each time for their parents line of work meaning that he has to put up a front for each new person kind of linking to him having the wild card ability as one of those factors. Though thats my slight spin on it, any thoughts?

No offense, but I get bad vibes from the phrase "gender confusion" as it implies that a person's feelings of gender dysphoria is based on an incorrect understanding of their gender. 😬

@@RetroCollects1 persona 4 really changed the way I thought about life in general

@iheartericcartman Not much. The P5 anime didn't really dive into Joker as a character like P4 did for Narukami
And the spin-offs didn't help either since he's back to being silent protag for the most part
