Good Pokemon That Are Almost Terrible (ft. @rozepanter007)

  • Some Pokemon are one trait away from being terrible, or at least much worse. Whether Garchomp's 102 base speed, or Ditto gaining the ability Imposter, without a single small trait, some Pokemon would loose all competitive relevancy.
    Also, Dugtrio's ability Arena Trap would eventually get banned in generation 4, but before the ban, Dugtrio was quite good in Gen 4 OU.

    Power creep is a thing. Zapdos has been fortunate enough to have stood the test of time due to its typing largely and being an early Gen legendary, it has the well-rounded stats and a stat it excels in which happens to suit it well enough. The weather wars of Gen 5 OU were pretty hostile for it. Weather boosted moves got past its bulk and it was offensively outclassed by Thundurus with its superior base speed, arguably better type coverage and ability to boost with Nasty Plot. And even as a supporter, Thundurus had Prankster.

    • @mnm1273
      @mnm1273 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      70%of power creep is the fact that when the number of Pokemon increase of course most Pokemone in OU aren't going to be from Gen 1, nowadays Gen 1 is a tiny share of the pokemon count.

    • @AndrewFullerton
      @AndrewFullerton 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mnm1273The average base stat total in Gen 1 is ~407. In Gen 4 it's over 450. Power creep isn't just a matter of older pokemon having more competition, it's a common problem that a lot of games face where the new and exciting thing always has to be mechanically better to keep the fans coming back.

    there are a lots of pokemon not mentined in the video that are one change away from being bad like:
    -clefable did not become viable until it received magic guard(The fairy typying helped even more, but it the magic guard ability is what trully carries it).
    -grimsnarl would be almost useless without prankster
    -gallade was almost useless until it finally received sharpness in gen 9.
    -pelliper and torkoal were useless until they received drizzle and drought.
    -crawdaunt is carried by the adaptability ability
    -pretty much all walls would be either useless or barely usable if they didn't have a reliable recovery.

    the best example is how toxic limited distribution turned top tier and must have in your team picks like Landorus-T, Tornadus-T and Heatran into secondary options and outclassed in a lot of scenarios unless your team structure benefits from them, when it used to be the other way around, you didn't lose anything when putting them on your team when they have toxic

      @@royalgelly8948 Tusk does the bulky ground type role better in most scenarios and have way more sets, the offensive sets are super good too so I got not idea why do you say that it is pasive. Lando requires to be on certain structures to actually do something without being outclassed, while Tusk can be used on almost every team (sun is a big one or even some sucessful high ladder stall teams have made use of Tusk). What I'm saying is that Tusk is what lando used to be with being the safest pick and the variety of sets it has allow it to always do something in every team, Lando now struggles because without toxic or knock off lacks of a safe move to click and make progress while you pray the last move you pick is actually going to be useful in the match up

    Im Kinda confused how zapdos is considered "almost terrible" when its been an very common ou threat in every gen except 5, yes it good due tonits typing but thats not the only thing it has, it hits very hard especially in rain, its very bulky which is great in comjunction with roost and static, in earlier gens it got defog to deal with traps and even after loosing it it got heavy dooty boots to make up for it, it has alot going honestly

    • @blip_exists
      @blip_exists  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Zapdos likely wouldn't be terrible if it had a different typing (similar to Garchomp not being terrible if its speed was 2 points lower), but its fantastic typing certainly does help. Beyond that, it doesn't really have one single super great trait, just a lot of solid ones.

      @reggilad_9043 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @pettermiranda4651 ok but the reason that is isn't because zapdos was bad and got power creeped or anything, it's because they nerfed it into the ground In That game, it lost its best stab coverage (thunder and hurricane) as well as weather ball, roost and defogger without getting anything to make up for it, it's basically what happened to weville and tyranitar in sv, when you steak the best moves from any top teir pokemon there gonna immediately become bad

    I think this is a really nuanced and interesting subject. I would have to agree with what people are saying in that the a lot of pokemon are only one small nerf away from being unviable.
    The Zapdos example is really interesting, because it's typing not it's only selling point. There is another Electric/Flying legend with two forms that Zapdos is locking out of OU, by simply being a better option. If Zapdos had a different type would Thunderus take it's place? Rotom-Fan certainly didn't take it's place in pre-home OU, despite having the same typing and very similar movepool, and the same stats as Rotom-Wash who is OU.
    Speaking of Electrics in OU. Sandy Shocks manages to eek out a place in OU with a different typing from Zapdos, but also has very similar stats. If this pokemon, with such similar stats to Zapdos can thrive in OU, who's to say Zapdos still couldn't make it even with a different type?

    Hmmmm I don't know about calling Annihilape "terrible" without Rage Fist. Thing has solid bulk, pretty good Atk stat, pretty important speed tier, and one of the best typings in the game. Even if it has to rely on Shadow Claw, I'd find it hard to say it would be on par with Non-Imposter Ditto or Houndstone.
    Also keep in mind that Primape gets Rage Fist and is NU, so there definitely is more to Annihilape and just Rage Fist.

    • @blip_exists
      @blip_exists  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      without rage fist, Annihlape is best decribed as lackluster, 90 speed is fine, but below the very important base 100, and even down in RU, most physical attackers are faster, stronger, or bulkier.
      I don't think it would be on par with ditto or houndstone (ditto would be bad in literally any tier that isn't the 6 weakest pokemon in the game), but it wouldn't be great IMO.

    Zapdos is almost bad as well for another reason, a problem many electric types (as well as Zapdos' bird bretheren) had/have, coverage. Thankfully, online simultors bless them in Gens 1-7 with a Hidden Power of choice. Zapdos later gained Heat Wave but you had to get it from a specific game for some time.

      Yeahhh, the topic for this video was mainly to mirror the video for Rozepanter's channel, which was a much better topic. However, I do have to disagree that any pokemon could be seen as "almost terrible" take for example Blissey, who even with a small stat change, or an ability change, would still likely be a decent pokemon at the least. Some pokemon rely evenly on all of their traits, and for this one, Rozepanter and I tried to choose pokemon that relied on one trait much more than others.
