  • Join us for an incredible journey as we tell the story of the Bingley Five Rise Locks on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, viewed from narrowboat and drone, as we explore Britain by Narrowboat.
We begin our day on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at the Bingley Five Rise Locks, looking at the history of this amazing canal attraction, described by IWA co-founder, Robert Aikman, as one of the Seven Wonders of the Waterways. After getting our engine bay flooded, Colin takes a look at it's smaller sibling, the Three Rise Locks and how the canal was moved to make way for improvements to Bingley's roads.
From Bingley we make our way to the historical, architectural wonder that is Saltaire, built by Titus Salt in the 1800s, the famous Salts Mill is an amazing sight to see from the canal.
Many thanks to the Canal and River Trust for allowing us to use the photographs of Barry Whitelock and the Five-Rise locks. You can get more information on the Bingley Five and Three Rise Locks here: canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-....

My late Mum, who lived in Shipley, worked in Saltaire Mill until she met my father, who was a boatman working for the Leeds & Liverpool Canal Company. He lived in Lathom, Nr. Ormskirk and it was on his trips to Leeds that he met my Mum. They married at Shipley register office in December, 1935 and I was born at Ring O' Bells in Septemer, 1936, so your videos have a special place in my family history. Thanks for the memories!

Wow when the construction of these locks was underway our country New Zealand had just been sighted by Captain James Cook of the British Navy in 1769 he made 3 trips his last in 1779 he went on to map both islands, however he was not the first European to discover New Zealand Dutch explorer Able Janszoon Tasman first sighted the West coast of the South Island in December 1642 however he missed the North Island due too bad weather and headed NW he called the place Zeeland. Yet another great narrow boat journey boys awesome video.

Oh this brings back memories. When I was 16, in 1981, I went up and down the Bingley five rise. The lock keeper was quite young and extremely handsome, and he wore a uniform. The family I travelled with had two teenage girls and we were all doing our best to attract his attention. I was showing off winding the gate paddle up really fast and then swung the lock key around, but it flew up and went into the lock. They cost a fiver back then, and I was put on brew-making duties for the rest of the trip.

Great vlog again, chaps. Beautiful scenery, via drone and a lovely history lesson, for the uninitiated.
Titus Salt built a school; medical centre; library; church; a social hall and houses for his workforce. The working day was shorter and he paid his workers more money and he STILL made more money than other mill owners. He knew it was the workers who were important, when running a business.
Unfortunately, the Titus Salts of this world are few and far between, these days. x

Isn't it amazing looking at those locks built 245 years ago. Do you think for 1 second that those workers thought about us admiring there labor all these years later. I can't imagine how honored they'd be if they new. I could spend hours just looking at all the individual stones trying to imagine what it must have been like. I could use some of that long underwear, it was only 111 degrees here in Scottsdale Arizona today. Another great blog from two awesome people. Love you guys. Dean

I had two, two!!! bacon and cheese sandwiches while watching this video. The cheese was melty cheese slices, the brand is hillview or something like that and the bacon is short cut rindless (people from the USA call it "Canadian Bacon"). And the bread was toasted. It was very satisfying and filling. So I was both filled and satisfied while watching your video! :)

Greetings from India! Your vlog came up into my feed probably because I have been following David Johns and his marvellous vlog about living on a Narrowboat for a while now and I am glad it did. The Bingley Five Rise locks were really interesting, the history too. Good to know about Barry Whitelock, the lock keeper who got a MBE for his service. The drone camera work gave a different perspective to the locks and the countryside along the canal. Wish you all the best for your future endeavours.

When we have structures submerged in water lasting 200 years + that have the ability to work and operate for industrial use thru to holiday boating, without major issues, it ceases to amaze me... Architecture now just isn't architecture anymore, it's a costing exercise with thought over longevity disregarded. Such a joy to see these canals we're well thought-out and built by tradesmen who took real joy in there job, and produced the amazing structures we cherish today!! Real do love all your videos! Highly regarded! Well done guys!!

Foxes Afloat the bottom lock when it emptied left the boat stuck on the bottom as I entered because it was so shallow. So my husband Ivan shut the back gates and opened the paddles on the bottom gate of the middle lock to raise the water level! I wasn’t very keen when the water was cascading down into the lock towards the boat but thankfully we only had a 50 boat so there was loads of space at the front. It was an interesting day because on the 5 rise the lock keeper said he was bringing a boat up as we descended and that we would pass in the middle lock, as I pulled in they pulled out. The only problem was we were both on the same side and because my boat was shorter they decided I should move across, even though I had hardly any experience! Obviously it was a perfect manoeuvre and there was no contact with the other boat. To make matters worse I’d invited friends that live in Halifax over for the day so they could also experience the five rise too. So no pressure! 😁 It was a great day and everyone loved it. We’re back to hiring now as we sold our boat in February. The plan was to buy something longer but as we haven’t seen anything we really like (apart from brand new) and because we are just leisure boaters, we think we’ll go back to hiring. Goodness this is a long message! Anyway what I wanted to say is we’re hiring from Andersen in Middlewich so we can do the Anderton boat lift. Let s hope we don’t get stuck in there! I love Saltaire too and there are some great shops. I got a 1930s brooch which is made of tin and is two Scottie dogs with wobbly heads. Well Ivan treated me 😁. Did you make it to Granary Wharf? Thanks again.

I used to commute by bike from Thackley to Crossflatts along the canal and the five rise was a challenge! The tow path up the side is split into sections with lines of cobbles and I started by reaching the first line, then the second until I was fit enough to peddle up the complete section without stopping. I probably took as long on my bike as using the locks! The Bingley bypass meant the loss of Treacle Cock alley, a pathway that went under the railway. Sir Titas Salt was a teetotaler and there were no pubs in Saltaire so it was a bit of a issue when a pub chain called one of their establishments in Bradford after him!

Great video as always entertaining and informative. Saltaire canal side looks fantastic a place I've always wanted to visit. Isn't the Barbara Hepworth Museum near by. I've seen so often the canal, railway and road all using the easyest route, shame one of trains passing was the much derided Pacer.
Nice to see Dillon appears to have fully recovered from his dentistry and to see he's not the only canine companion to have kept you company on your travels on the canal network.

Another cracking video guys - thanks very much. Sadly when we were on the L&L way back in 1981 we didn't have time to descend the Bingley Five Rise as we'd have needed to turn round straight away & go back up in order to return our hire boat to Skipton in time. We felt it would have been wrong to use up all that water !!
Very interested to hear about all the other staircase locks too.

I get that locks lower and raise water levels, but how they do it completely baffles me. What does the windy thing actually open or close? Why does a cill even exist if its so dangerous. How do you know when to stop filling or emptying a lock? Why do some of the lock gates seem to be more like my colander? You may possibly have guessed I've never stepped foot on a narrowboat!
Anyway, love the vlogs, always look forward to them. Take care both xx

    • @FoxesAfloat
      @FoxesAfloat  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Christopher! 👋
      1. The windlass opens gates on the lock that let water in/out.
2.The cill is what the lock gate post is attached to.
      3. The lock stops filling automatically when the levels on each side are equal.
      4. Locks get leaky. It's a sad fact.
      Hope that helps 😉

I found it a bit concerning that the bilge pump didn’t take care of the water in the engine bay. Perhaps that should be something to have looked at in a boat yard. I loved all the Drone shots of the country sides you went through, they were amazing! It was good to see Dylan lookin happy wagging his tail! Loved the commentary on this VLOG, I learned a lot!
