Another great vid, thank you. Its quite amazing how many people live round here and have no clue about the river breach. There is still a lot of heavy machinery under the waters of St. Aidens.

The shot of the little channel through the grid at 4:50 is a fish pass. At that size probably for elvers (eel fry). They are usually filled with fibres like you see on a stiff brush, that's probably why it is so turbulent. They, including this one, are built on a gentler gradient than the weir to help the tiny eels which are about 2 inches long.
Any salmon and sea trout (if they return) should be able to swim up the weir which has a gentle gradient by their standards.

Great vid, me and my mates used to fish off the lemonroyd lock in the 70s and 80s , and we also used to swim in the canal between saville pit and what we knew it as 'the basin' which was like a layby for a canal i suppose, where I believe the barges had coal tipped into them from a huge old piece of machinery, this was located on 'again ' what we knew it as 'the locies' this was a holding yard for coal trucks on railway lines that came out of the colliery when they were still barging coal up and down so the river water quality was really quite bad. Keep up the good work.

Sounds fun. I know which basin you are talking about. It's filled in now and re-landscaped.

Love this vid as I live close to this area. Love the pic showing Fleet Mill and Fleet village as I was told it was called. I'm not a lover of water or bridges so I've crawled over that bridge while dog walking lol. Oh and my family call Lemon Royd marina Rosie and Jim land.

There's also a Calder branch of the Aire and Calder. I'd catorgorise the branch you're on as the Leeds branch and the other Wakefield branch which starts just upstream of Stanley Ferry. Along the Wakefield branch just above the art gallery at Chantry Bridge there's one of the most important buildings on route. It's since been transformed into flats (converted around 2010ish) it was a warehouse originally and acted as a storage for textiles that were headed for Huddersfield/Todmorden etc where a narrower boat was required to transport it than the boats that came up the A+C

I think Fleet lock was only to serve the old mills on the river which were still in operation when the navigation was built. When the mills became disused, the lock was no longer needed.
