    Great diy! Made 2 sets of these, one for my kayak and one for my son's kayak. Made 3 simple changes on mine though. First, I made my pipe piece a little longer so the ball only has maybe 1/4" of movement so it closes/seals quicker. Second, before inserting the pipe piece, I put it on my router table and chamfered the end slightly with a 30° chamfer bit. Seems to seal better when closed. Third, after inserting the chamfered pipe chamfer side down (towards the ball) into the coupling, I then put it back onto the router table and chamfered the top with a 45° chamfer bit deep enough that there's barely an edge around the top. Helps direct water down into the valve instead of getting stuck on the flat ring at the top. Hope you'll try a set with the upgrades. Great and simple diy. Thanks for the base idea. Works great.

      Great ideas. I did modify mine with the chamfer on the ends of the pipe piece. Helps alot.

    I really like your innovative idea for the bottom of the plug. Other DIY's use a screen which eventually clogs. The String Trimmer line is ideal. Thanks for sharing!!

    Genius! What a great solution. Much cheaper than any one way valve you can buy. I'll be sizing my scupper holes. Thanks!

    Nice! Took my Lure 11.5 out on the lake today with a new trolling motor setup and water ended up in the back so these might be just what the doctor ordered. Thanks!

      @@unclebilloutdoors136 I did build a set for my back cargo area on my Lure 11.5. Oddly though the couplers I purchased didn't even come close to fitting the scupper holes on the kayak and I needed a lot of electrical tape to make them fit snugly. That being said, they seem to work well. Oh, and I had those Nerf balls around the house from a Nerf pistol my son and I use so it worked out great.

      That's wierd that the scupper holes are different sizes, but I have a couple in the middle of the kayak that are bigger. I used the stock feelfree plugs in those. I experimented with cutting a groove in the coupler with my table saw and adding an o ring. Turned out I didn' t need to use it that way, but might work well for larger holes.

    Briliiant idea 'Uncle Bill'
    Not only cheaper than normal scupper plugs but better too .. they do the same job as a self bailer on a sailing dinghy.

      They seem to work well for me. One tip, Bevel the inside edge of the inner peice of pvc where the ball comes up and meets it. I found this helps keep the ball from sticking in the up position.

    Excellent idea.
    I made the screen version but it plugged up the first rain that washed some debris in it.
    The ball I used was too big, barely enough room the move...I'll use your nerf gun ball!
    Just have to add the trimmer string and get a nerf ammo ball

    Very creative! Im thinking about using my kayak in the surf. Would the water accumulate and fill up the kayak until the ball drops?

    • @unclebilloutdoors136
      @unclebilloutdoors136  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got caught on Lake Erie in some pretty hefty waves. (4-5 feet). I got swamped a couple of times and both times the water drained right out. It seems the pressure of the water trying to drain out is enough to push the balls down.

    Why not skip the weed eater line and duplicate the holding ring you made? And just hold the rings in place with a touch of glue? Would that work or am I missing something? This will be my first time combining kayaking with fishing. Just askin'.

    • @unclebilloutdoors136
      @unclebilloutdoors136  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Although I have not tried doing what you suggest, I believe duplicating the ring on the bottom would restrict the flow of water out of the plug, much as the ball seating on the ring stops water from coming up through the svupper. I saw a video that used a piece of window screen on the bottom, but that seemed it would trap sand and debris and need to be cleaned out.

    • @gmosabesartor5155
      @gmosabesartor5155 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@unclebilloutdoors136 I agree, it will prevent flow in both directions. Maybe one could dremel-grind the leading edge of a bottom ring that would create a gap for downward flow. This is all, of course, if you don't have access to trimmer line. (Mine isn't cylindrical in profile).

    very clever. My kayak (Native Watercraft Slayer Propel 10 MAX) scupper plug holes are bigger, 2 inch in diameter. I wonder if there are proper size PVC pipes for this DIY....

    • @unclebilloutdoors136
      @unclebilloutdoors136  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could be. I am not sure the diameter of a 1" or 1 1/2" coupling. The o.d. of 1 1/2" schedule 40 pvc might be close.

  • @tracyvarnermusic
    @tracyvarnermusic ปีที่แล้ว

    They make a pvc coupling called a no hub slip coupling.

    Why do you use the trimmer string? Why not just the PVC pipe on both sides?

    • @unclebilloutdoors136
      @unclebilloutdoors136  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I tried pvc on both ends. I also tried a piece of window screen. I found that if coarse sand or other small debris got into the scupper from the top, it would clog up and not allow the plug to work properly and I had to remove the plugs to clean them quite often. The trimmer string allows any debris to pass through easily.
