    So I built my scupper plugs after watching your video. I ended up using my daughter's crochet hook to pull the paracord through. The one thing I did different to the second set I made was to put a small washer between the knot and the golf ball just to keep the knot from trying to come back through when I pulled it tight. They work great! Thanks again.

    I used the same golf balls in the video without the strings. The person I bought the Kayaks from he showed me how to do it. Now without the strings it was a bit difficult to get those out. I ended up pushing it through all the way and get it out from the other end. So, I think adding the string is a very good idea. Thanks for sharing.

    Much appreciate these awesomw scupper plags Josh. I drove to my "Local" DICKS, 45 minute from here to find they didn't know what a scupper plug was. I ordered a set from eBay but traveling by a Slow Boat from China means I have a month to wait. I found the practice golf balls at my local Wally World. After 15 minutes work I am high and dry in my used Pelican Castaway 116 DLX for the first time. Dinner and Drinks are on me should you ever get to South Florida!!!

    Nice idea, which I gladly stole. I used a crochet hook to make the hole, then used it to pull the cord back through. Saves a step. The plugs work great.

    Thanks for the idea. If you don't have a crochet hook, i recommend using a bobby pin or a bent paper clip to get the paracord through to avoid messing up the paracord.

    Thanks for the info. I own a Ascend 10T and lost 3 plugs first time out and purchased the same plugs from Dicks and 5mins in the water my plugs started popping out and leaking. I'm on my way to purchase some foam golf balls. Thanks again and I'll fill you in on my project.

    This is great. My question is when I tried to push the paracord through with the needle, the needle just went right through it without pulling the cord through. I had to use the screwdriver to get the cord through, but made a big mess with golf ball foam everywhere and was more difficult. I’m hoping my holes aren’t too big now. We’ll see. Great idea and great video though.

    I had a very similar idea! But your complaint about those other scupper plugs as my curiosity up. Mainly because In my original angle kayak i use that exact style scupper plugs just black but hand to God mine have never backed themselves out of my kayak or even been taken out of my kayak since the day I put them in roughly about 2 years ago. Only reason I began thinking of making my own and using practice golf balls is because I just purchased a second bigger angler kayak one to upgrade and two my 12 yr old fishing buddy my daughter is now ready to come put and fish on the kayaks with me. She was a little unsure prior but she is ready now so she gets my old kayak. But yeah that's just odd I have seen other's say the same issue though I just somehow got lucky i guess idk. I just went out and pulled them out for the first time as watching your video and put them back in np so hopefully they style as reliable as they always been. If not that kayak can get the same DIY version. Oh and my new kayak also way more scupper holes so I wanted something more affordable then buying a bunch of plugs. But anyway I like the paracord idea thank you good sir

    Good idea, just made 6 for mine. They fit great! Those were the same universal plugs I was suckered into buying. Took them back for a refund. I can’t understand how and why as a retailer you wouldn’t sell the proper plugs for your kayaks. Anyway thanks for the great idea!

    Any updates? How have the foam balls held up? My concern is the foam is soft enough that the texture of the hole will damage it over time, causing it to leak.

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had to make a couple of new plugs this year. They were still holding up pretty well, but had started to allow some seepage. I haven't had to replace the entire set yet.. The ones that were leaking were the ones near the front of the kayak. Those are the ones that get constant sun while out.

    I have the same kayak . The skipper tunnels are only couple inches deep and I have quite a lot of water coming through. Bought the green plated design plugs and no good. Since you have been using these for a while would you say they keep all the water from coming through?

    Does this let the water out without letting water in like the high dollar scupper plugs or is this just a cheap plug for general use?

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This does not have a one way valve. It keeps the water out is all. Any water that finds its way in will stay until you remove the plug.

    Josh 1st thing great video, next I just bought the same kayak you have and it had these type of plugs in them. My question is I only been out once I am about 6ft 1 and 270pounds and the talon seemed very unstable. Did you notice that at first or balance just comes in time? Thought about making some stabilizers. Any thoughts ?

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. I actually have a video from the first time I took that Kayak Out. It was a little unstable, and I will tell you my method of boarding the kayak was completely wrong. For me however it seems like the more time I spend on my kayak the more stable it becomes. I know nothing is changing on the kayak oh, so it has to just be me. I think confidence and experience with how the kayak responds factors in greatly.

      Went a slightly different route.
      $2.98 Foam Golf Balls (Wal-Mart)
      $1.00 8" Zip Ties (Harbor Freight)
      8 Small Washers (Laying around)
      Made initial hole. Ran tie through washer and up through hole. Through washer on opposite end and back down through top washer. Out the bottom and through initial bottom washer. Lock zip tie and pull on loop. Cut tails off.
      Now I have a rigid finger loop. I found it easier than getting the 550 cord through.

    Wow dude and dudettts; I’m not remaking a video but I will suggest a slightly better system For all of maybe $3 or $4.
    But function is what we’re going for.
    First go to Dollar tree. In the toy department you will find a bag of 3 rubber balls; buy 2 or three bags.
    Now; you can salvage those draw strings off old hoodies or old bags with those little draw string balls and a plastic milk carton, one of those huge needles that we save but never use they are about two to three inches long with a huge eye in them.
    Get your para cord or salvage the draw string from old swim trunks, jackets or where ever.
    Use a drill to drill two holes about 1/8” drill bit in the rubber ball about 3/4” distance apart , punch two holes in the plastic milk container material you’ve cut into strips about 3/4” wide and about 2.5” long and fold them into 1.25” so it’s doubled up. ! Thread your needle with your para cord or draw string and push the needle through the drilled hole in the ball then through the plastic the back through the plastic and back through the ball and give yourself about 4.5” of string on each of the two holes your needle passed into and out of the ball. , now; put the plug into the recessed scupper from the bottom up; , attach both ends of your string through the draw string binder and put a knot in each string after taking up all the slack in the string. Now the binder can’t fall through holes and your balls wont hang down below the kayak lol when you need them simply pull up and the rubber ball will seal the hole from the underside; the direction the waves will impact the bottom. If you need to drain just release the draw string and push the ball down it won’t or can’t go anywhere and the water will drain unobstructed. That my DIYN. it requires a tad bit more brains and a little salvage work
