I have to say, thank you. Ive been watching a lot of ideas for one way scuppers and this is by far the best and most affordable idea. And I'm using the same kayak too!

Thank you for the inspiration. I modified the idea just a bit on my sons Sun Dolphin Journey SS 10 kayaks. Due to the small size of the scuppers I was unable to locate a ball small enough to go inside the fittings so I used #7 corks.

I like the DIY valve ideas, especially because I can't seem to find them already made to fit my perception striker. I did cringe when I saw that rubber mallet go towards the scupper hole. The majority of leaks in sit on kayaks start at the scupper holes and are a nightmare to patch.

Does it great clogged from duck weed and mud in boat? I’m thinking of screen on top too. I love to fish in the weeds.

I went to Walmart they have The Unbreakable Weighted fishing bobber, 3 for 1.16 by Comal Tackle, perfect fit, also the rubber balls are in the party section next to cards.
So I made and installed these exactly as you showed int the video. Made sure the bouncy balls I
have float, and yet I still get a good amount of water coming in, especially in the tank well. any thought on what I did wrong ?
I'm wondering if a sinking rubber ball wouldn't be better. If there were water pressure above and below the plug, wouldn't the ball try to float up to the surface of the water above? I think a sinking ball would be pushed upward from water pressure, rather than float up. Likewise, the sinking ball would be pushed downward by water pressure from inside the kayak. I plan on experimenting with my Caribbean 12 angler.

I done this on my Perception Tribe 11.5 . Im still getting a little water in the front 4 holes around my feet. Im a larger guy so i wonder if im pushing the holes down to far in the water ? If that is the case what can i do to solve the problem ?
If you are having trouble finding balls that fit that float try Party City or a craft store like Michael's. I was able to find a variety of sizes at both. Also foam bobbers can be worked for this purpose.
I had to get smaller bushings to fit my scupper holes and am having a very difficult time finding a 5/8" to 3/4" ball to fit in them. I have found some wooden ones and some hollow plastic ones that float but I'm wondering if that would be a problem. I would think that would be fine since it would ride the water pushing up from the bottom better and still move out of the way for the draining water since the water would be coming from above. I'd think it would only be a problem if you had water coming up from below in a significant way while water was trying to drain from above. Should that work? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

That's so cool! I've heard scuppers are the weakest part of these boats. I'm a little concerned about driving in PVC with a mallet.
I didn't realize how hard it would be to find the ball for this set-up! I used to see them all the time as a kid, but I could not find them now. What I did find that may work are thill-style bobbers. They aren't perfectly round (more egg-shaped), but I found the size that should seal the PVC insert good and they should orient themselves correctly. I will have to cut the long spindle off them so they don't stick out above or below, but that shouldn't be a problem.
Try party supply stores. That's where I found a package of 12.
Try dollar tree, or kids toy vending machine.
I found the balls but where the hell do you find nylon mesh??
Nylon mesh is window screen. Just make sure you get the nylon, not metal. Home Depot or any hardware store.
I found the little yellow tennis balls that are Nerf Shooter ammo reloads work perfectly. They're small foam tennis balls.
I have a couple of bouncy balls on mine that float. Should work fine with floating balls. Not sure how well the wooden ones would work. Might get water logged. Keep us updated. Like to know how well they work.
What about duck weed and other seaweeds? Does the screen stop it ? I fish a lot kayak in the weeds.

Amazing idea, just what I was looking for. Polystyrene ball from an arts supplier might do if you can't locate the bouncy balls from a $1 shop (5 'n dime I think it equates to for our US based paddlers).

NICE .I USED : FLAPERS . NEVER WATER COME FOR THE BOTOM AND WHEN SPLASH GO . DRY DRY KAYAK ALL TIME . NEVER WET . AND FLAPERS SUPER EASY INSTALED .FOR ALL KAYAKS MODELS . (and I use gasoline and electric engines))

I got super balls to make the valves (finally)- but do the super balls you use float? Mine sink in water, so I wonder if they will seal the valve good without them floating up to seal off from the water?
Cuivre saw where you posted this on YakAngler. Mine do not float either, so I came back to the video to see if maybe he had those squishy foam/rubber balls kinda like what's on a paddle ball. But his look like the glossy solid rubber balls like I just bought and have always had growing up. So I don't know. Guess I'll just have to try it. Have all the components finally!
Mine sink. You want them to, that way they clear the way for the water to flow out easier.

@@officialWWM Late to the party but: the solid, heavy balls like DIY points out works best. They will "sink" to the bottom where they rest on the screen allowing water above to seep down and thru. When water from below tries to enter the boat there is a large pressure and density difference between the water below and the air above. The ball will move towards the lesser pressure. Turn this sideways, a tube with a ball in it, water filled on one side and air on the other side of the ball, which way do you think the ball moves?
Great idea but the draw back for me is that I use my skuppers to tie down my kayak for transport

Brilliantly simply! What's the purpose of the screen?

That is nice but unfortunatly it defeats the purpose of the scupper holes. Scupper holes are there to help lower the kayak into the water on purpose on windy days so that cross winds don't drift you kayak away from your line. When you move forward the design under the kayak draws water away from the scupper hole sucking any residual water in the scupper hole therefore draining the insides of the kayak. If you plug your scupper holes while moving forward you've emtied all the water out of the kayak and stop any from coming back in. You can pick which scupper plugs you remove to later reach over to plug them as you move. The ones under your seat could remain plugged for example if water did not make there.
With the project you've built it becomes a single use drain only function which defeats the purpose of scupper holes. Cool concept but you might as well leave the scupper plugs in if you never use them. In the event that water was splashed in from over the sides or you flipped tge kayak, you can just remove a plug while moving forward to drain it all.
Patent it, ASAP!!!

I am glad I am able to inspire a spin off version of the self draining scupper plug. My hope in doing this video was to do just that. I am going to try this version on one of my kayaks...who knows it might much better than the orginal. Thanks for sharing and keep DIYing!
I don't have a point of comparison, but I can tell you my solution works great with the floating balls.
plugs are like $2 on ebay though
this vid is a great DIY fix to the ever frustrating problem of ill fitting standard plugs that have to be removed to drain the water. After pounding PVC into the hole it's a little difficult to get it out to clean the debris out of the mesh though.
