Easy DIY Automatic Self draining Scupper Plugs
These scupper plugs work well on my FeekFree kayak. I haven't tried them on any other kayak, but think they could be adapted to others.

My FeelFree Lure 13.5. How I Use It.

This is how I have modified and set up my FeelFree Lure 13.5 for how I use it. Thanks to Dominant1 (motor bracket) and Hammer Head (pwm install) for helpful ideas.
Au Sable River Kayak, Fishing and Camping
มุมมอง 4375 ปีที่แล้ว
My son and I took our semi annual kayak trip on the Au Sable River this year. Had a great time, although we overestimated how long it would take us and ended early. I had a little mishap and flipped my kayak after getting pushed into an overhanging tree by the current. No harm done, just took a while to dry out, but I didn't get that on video.
Manistee River Hodenpyle Dam to Tippy Dam

This is a remake of my kayak, camping, and fishing trip on The Big Manistee River in Michigan with my son Ryan.
Sweet subbed....😊
Nice float
Thank you
Great idea thanks for sharing
Thanks for the video
You bet!
Very creative! Im thinking about using my kayak in the surf. Would the water accumulate and fill up the kayak until the ball drops?
I got caught on Lake Erie in some pretty hefty waves. (4-5 feet). I got swamped a couple of times and both times the water drained right out. It seems the pressure of the water trying to drain out is enough to push the balls down.
@@unclebilloutdoors136 Sweet! Can’t wait to rig up my yak. Thank you!
@@JosePerez-zm8ln Hope they work out well for you.
Great diy! Made 2 sets of these, one for my kayak and one for my son's kayak. Made 3 simple changes on mine though. First, I made my pipe piece a little longer so the ball only has maybe 1/4" of movement so it closes/seals quicker. Second, before inserting the pipe piece, I put it on my router table and chamfered the end slightly with a 30° chamfer bit. Seems to seal better when closed. Third, after inserting the chamfered pipe chamfer side down (towards the ball) into the coupling, I then put it back onto the router table and chamfered the top with a 45° chamfer bit deep enough that there's barely an edge around the top. Helps direct water down into the valve instead of getting stuck on the flat ring at the top. Hope you'll try a set with the upgrades. Great and simple diy. Thanks for the base idea. Works great.
Great ideas. I did modify mine with the chamfer on the ends of the pipe piece. Helps alot.
Hi Uncle Bill, do you still have this kayak? How did hold up in the years?
Yes I still have it. After 7 years It has held up really well. I have had no issues. No leaks, cracks or deforming. Bolts used to loosen up on the seat but I took them all out and put lock tite on them and it solved the problem.
They make a pvc coupling called a no hub slip coupling.
Brilliant!
Just excellent thank you so very much
Great video thank you very much I just bought a lure, 13.5 I’d like to see how you made those scupper. plugs, Those might be better than the original, How about where to get the power switches and pwm kit, Absolutely wonderful setup I'm watching your video you spend a lot of money for me, going to be a lot of great projects this winter, Troller motor setup is just fantastic, I live in Middle Tennessee in kayak country, here where I live in Sparta Tennessee is where they make the Jackson kayaks they live here because they said it's the best kayaking they ever seen anywhere in the United States, but after doing a lot of research I actually like the feel free that's why I bought that, I wanted a lot of room to pack stuff and have extremes stability Again thank you wonderful video lots and lots of good ideas Your buddy was right I'm glad you did make this video
I thank you sir! I have had so many enjoyable times on this kayak. Heading to the Allegheney River in Pa for a four day trip later this month. Sometimes the best times are doing mods, especially when they turn out well. The pwm and switches came from amazon. If you get a pwm, get one at least 60 amps. I burned up a 40 amp one. I also have a video on making the scupper plugs. I have had them in since I made them and never removed them. They work great. I hope you have alot of enjoyment in your kayak. I can imagine how great your area is for kayaking.
@@unclebilloutdoors136 thank you so much again bill I appreciate the quick comments probably just mostly kayak for the rest of the year during the winter I'll put it up on some horses and do my mods, I will go look for the making the scuppers like you did and probably do that great idea, all of your ideas are great ideas I'm an old retired UPS guy 68 now, bought a little cheap pelican to see if I like to kayaking and I like it very much I could see right away I wanted stability so I can move around when I saw a guy sitting sideways on the 13.5 on the edge I was like that's incredible, it's definitely a very heavy kayak but the wheel makes up for the heaviness Wish I could fish Erie like you do for those walleyes that's got to be too much fun, I grew up in Chicago land moved to Middle Tennessee left there as soon as I could, the owner of Jackson is a ham radio guy and I am too, every person in his family is a world class kayaker, they've been all over the United States and the world they said right here near Sparta Tennessee is the best kayaking there is We have it all Rivers , big lakes calm water fast water everything Thank you sir again appreciate it
very clever. My kayak (Native Watercraft Slayer Propel 10 MAX) scupper plug holes are bigger, 2 inch in diameter. I wonder if there are proper size PVC pipes for this DIY....
Could be. I am not sure the diameter of a 1" or 1 1/2" coupling. The o.d. of 1 1/2" schedule 40 pvc might be close.
Have you ever done work for other people cause I have a feel free lure 11.5 v2 and would like some of the mods you have on my kayak?
I'm sorry, I have not. But if you need information on how I did my mods, I'd be happy to help.
Why do you use the trimmer string? Why not just the PVC pipe on both sides?
I tried pvc on both ends. I also tried a piece of window screen. I found that if coarse sand or other small debris got into the scupper from the top, it would clog up and not allow the plug to work properly and I had to remove the plugs to clean them quite often. The trimmer string allows any debris to pass through easily.
Pacing
I know this comment is a bit late but do you happen to have a vid showing how you did the rigging for the trolling motor? I'd love to do this on mine but don't understand it enough to setup a new control knob like you did to control the speeds and direction.
I'm sorry Michael I do not have a video on the trolling motor. I got a lot of ideas for the set up from videos by Dominant31. He has a series of videos that detail his set up. I pretty much did the same thing, just adapted it for my kayak. I hope that helps.
Sorry Michael. The motor with the pwm set up ideas came from a guy whose channel name is Hammer Head.
I’m having such a hard time finding that hammer head channel
I'm luv'n this yak setup!
Thank you sir!
Genius! What a great solution. Much cheaper than any one way valve you can buy. I'll be sizing my scupper holes. Thanks!
Ingenuity 👌🏼
I have two lure 11.5 and was looking at more and your set up is the best cleanest most practical I have found on TH-cam.
Thank you sir!
Fantastic scupper plug idea .
Thanks.
Great video young man . I appreciate it . Im wanting the lure 13.5 v2 . Yours is set up great .
Thanks David. I have been really happy with my Lure.
Great idea!!!
And this is why when your elders speak, you remain silent, & listen!!! Appreciate the knowledge Uncle Bill !!! 👍
Bill, what Malone Microsport trailer model is it. Do you know, if it comes with a swing hitch. Please let me know. Great mod. Keep up the great work
This is the trailer I have. I ordered it from Austin Kayak (ack.com) and it came with with 2 sets of seawings. I could not find the same package on their website now though. www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Trailers-sf-Roof_Rack_on_Wheels-pm-Malone.aspx?Google%20%7C%20Search%20-%20Watersport%20Carriers&adgroupid=70511621010&campaignid=115782017&creative=359719194951&device=m&devicemodel=&feeditemid=&keyword=malone%20trailers&loc_interest_ms=&loc_physical_ms=9015293&matchtype=p&network=g&placement=&position=&gclid=CjwKCAjwg4-EBhBwEiwAzYAlsi-SAgzEv6rh2Y2ibc_hVd_R7BOHM5n13yTx7qnrG3NPH0HDm86lTBoCtQwQAvD_BwE
@@unclebilloutdoors136 Thanks, I will use this style to see who in Canada, Toronto area carries these. Thanks again
I wanted this kayak. I can’t get it on top of my car as I’ve got a lip on the tail gate and 43 kilos would crush it on the slide up. The extension bar which fits on my roof rack is only for 34 kilos, so I’ve had to go with the lure 11.5. They told me at the shop a lot of people have this problem. Damn!!!!
That's why I went with the trailer. The 11.5 is great kayak though. I'm sure you'll love it.
@@unclebilloutdoors136 I’ve now gone with the moken 12.5. It’s a ten times better kayak for the sea. The lure is for lakes.
Good choice!
Where did u get the bracket for the trolling motor.. is dominant1 a TH-cam channel??
I made the bracket from a piece of 1/8" x 4" steel. I ordered it on Amazon. It was fairly easy to do using a hack saw and a dremmel tool to cut the steel. The bends were made using a vice and a propane torch. The only thing I could not do was weld the pieces together. A local mechanic shop did that for me. The youtube channel is actually Dominant31. Sorry, He shows more detail on the bracket. I just used wider material and well nuts for mounting.
Excellent idea. I made the screen version but it plugged up the first rain that washed some debris in it. The ball I used was too big, barely enough room the move...I'll use your nerf gun ball! Just have to add the trimmer string and get a nerf ammo ball Thanks for sharing!
What a rig. I have been back and forth on which one I want, but I think this makes my mind up for sure.
I don't think you could go wrong. I haven't been in very many kayaks, but It's everything I could want.
I really like your innovative idea for the bottom of the plug. Other DIY's use a screen which eventually clogs. The String Trimmer line is ideal. Thanks for sharing!!
Why not skip the weed eater line and duplicate the holding ring you made? And just hold the rings in place with a touch of glue? Would that work or am I missing something? This will be my first time combining kayaking with fishing. Just askin'.
Although I have not tried doing what you suggest, I believe duplicating the ring on the bottom would restrict the flow of water out of the plug, much as the ball seating on the ring stops water from coming up through the svupper. I saw a video that used a piece of window screen on the bottom, but that seemed it would trap sand and debris and need to be cleaned out.
@@unclebilloutdoors136 I agree, it will prevent flow in both directions. Maybe one could dremel-grind the leading edge of a bottom ring that would create a gap for downward flow. This is all, of course, if you don't have access to trimmer line. (Mine isn't cylindrical in profile).
Great video! Super setup 👍
Thanks.
How far out into the lake will you take that? Around the islands?
I have been out around 3 miles from shore near Vermilion to 40-45 feet of water. Haven't gone out to the islands yet, but that may be coming.
Great setup man, have a 11.5 with a trolling motor as well and appreciate the engineering 👊🏽
Checked out your set up. Very nice.
@@unclebilloutdoors136 Appreciated, new supporter here 👊🏽
Briliiant idea 'Uncle Bill' Not only cheaper than normal scupper plugs but better too .. they do the same job as a self bailer on a sailing dinghy.
They seem to work well for me. One tip, Bevel the inside edge of the inner peice of pvc where the ball comes up and meets it. I found this helps keep the ball from sticking in the up position.
Mr. Bill, what trolling motor do you have?
It is a Minn Kota 30 lb thrust. I removed the head and run it through a pwm speed controller.
@@unclebilloutdoors136 happy with that size? I have the V2 and looking to add one to mine and since I am not going through the pod hole, I think the battery really is the limit. However, bigger is not always better.
@@dwaynehunt7412 I'm pretty happy with the 30 lb. I am not looking for speed too much. In calm water I can get about 3.5 mph which is fine for me. I use the motor primarily for trolling at spedds from 1.5 to 2.5 mph.
@@dwaynehunt7412 How are you planning to mount your motor?
@@unclebilloutdoors136 I plan on making a mount like you have. I have seen this type on other TH-cam videos and like that I can use my existing rudder setup on it.
with all those rod holders on the back, how to you get to your cooler and other boxes you have behind the seat..
The rod holder actually angles forward so the rods are between the back of the seat and the rear tank well. That leaves the well completely open for coolers or whatever.
@@unclebilloutdoors136 hello, great vid by the way, If the rods are behind the seat, how do you get to the cooler from the seat when you are on the water... the rods are in the way??
It makes it a little difficult if rhe rod holders are full, but I generally fish with two rods and only keep one extra in the rod holder. Not too bad to reach around to get to the cooler I can pretty much turn completely around in my seat too. Thanks.
Great idea thanks for sharing!! New subscribe!
Thank you sir. You have a new sub as well.
Awesome setup sir. How did you get all the wires inside the hull? And what size trolling motor are you using?
I had to fish the wires through the hull mainly from the cutouts for the trolling motor plug and the pwm panel. Some were a bit tough to get through. A fish tape helped a lot. For the light wires, I tied a nut to some fishing line, fed it through the hole and turned the kayak on its side to get the nut to fall through to the other side. I have a minn kota 30 lb. I can get a little over 4 mph on a calm day.
Love this! Thanks for sharing.
You bet Mark.
Uncle Bill, beautiful vessel sir.
Thank you Glitch.
Nice! Took my Lure 11.5 out on the lake today with a new trolling motor setup and water ended up in the back so these might be just what the doctor ordered. Thanks!
They definitely help keeping the hull dryer.
@@unclebilloutdoors136 I did build a set for my back cargo area on my Lure 11.5. Oddly though the couplers I purchased didn't even come close to fitting the scupper holes on the kayak and I needed a lot of electrical tape to make them fit snugly. That being said, they seem to work well. Oh, and I had those Nerf balls around the house from a Nerf pistol my son and I use so it worked out great.
That's wierd that the scupper holes are different sizes, but I have a couple in the middle of the kayak that are bigger. I used the stock feelfree plugs in those. I experimented with cutting a groove in the coupler with my table saw and adding an o ring. Turned out I didn' t need to use it that way, but might work well for larger holes.
Very nice. You were recommended by the MI Woodsman. So I came over and checked it out watch to complete your videos. So I subscribe to your Channel. May your days be long and a life full of joy. Keep Your Head on a swivel. Stay safe stay healthy. Tell next time. Gunny James

Great DIY Bill , might have to try this one on my Kayak as well ! thanks for sharing atb john PS. got the stickers thanks!
Thank you for Sharing, this is a great idea, and works so well
Thanks Bob. Works great for me.

Awesome brother glad it made there! cool spot on the yak for it , don't know how long it will last but you got a spare LOL man i love that Kayak Bill. look forward to the mail so i can put your sticker on my Danger Ranger Window LOL atb john
By far, the best kayak mods I've seen on TH-cam. Very solidly done and the colours on your yak are incredible. Bravo!
Thanks X minus 1. I try to keep things functional but simple.
Would you do a detailed video on the making of your scupper inserts?
I will try to get one done. Very simple.
@@unclebilloutdoors136 I was about to ask the same question, so Bob beat me to it. If one has been done, could you post a link to it please. UPDATE .. found it thanks !! I am thinking about buying a kayak and fancy the Feelfree Nomad. Regards from the UK
@@brianmorrison9168 You're very wecome sir! Not familiar with the Nomad, but I am very happy with the feelfree brand. Good luck to you.
Love the Kayak Bill, very nice. someday i will upgrade to one like that i like the design, great job on all the mods you made also nicely done, the ruder / trolling motor is pretty cool great idea on the scuffer plugs! i like the totes to, where did you find them at? all great setups for all kinds of fishing! nice electrical system as well! thanks for the video Bill, if your interested we are going to the Ausable river for a 3 night river Kayak camp. you are more than welcome and be nice to meet you! take care atb john
Thanks John. I think tinkering with a kayak is half the fun, getting it set up the way you want it. I got the totes at an Ace Hardware. They work out great.
